We went up there as a group, the Corvette and Camaro club.. They must've been between 12 and 15 of us.. We got seated fairly quick, but after that service was nonexistent.. After 15 minutes of being ignored, I had to go find somebody I got yelled out by the cook in the kitchen for looking for somebody.. There were never any coffee refills at all... They could care less if we were there food was good service nonexistent.. I can tell you that waitress would've made probably 150 bucks off of us. Have been here a few times in the last couple of years. We've had a great breakfast there with some outstanding biscuits and gravy. We've been chasing that good experience ever since but are getting close to giving up because we've have more disappointments. We would love to see this place succeed. It's super cozy inside and has local history. Service is always just ok. Looks like they hire inexperienced wait staff that aren't trained well. As a result, customers aren't greeted that well and you wonder if they value your business. Where the problem lies though is with the inconsistency of the food. The mac and cheese is usually recommended by the staff but we all thought it was dry and lacked any real flavor. The pot pie was really good! The brisket sandwich was way too high is smoke flavor- just overpowering and was not tender at all but tough! The fries were great - probably the best up there! The chicken sandwich was not bad in flavor but was only maybe a 1/4 chicken breast. For the price, we expected more. We wouldn't mind spending more, it's a great little place, but hopefully the owners see this and realize they have to do better so that we can continue to patronize their business. Had a delightful lunch here on a Sunday in July 2023. First time visit! Friendly greeting as we walked in the door. I like the layout of this place and would like to sit on the patio next time. Lots of great decor that includes some history of the Shaver Lake area. Focused menu that carries on the sawmill/lumberjack theme. I would have loved to try the Shavers Mac n Cheese or pot pie but chose one of the lighter options in the "No Meat for Me" section. The chili the veggie burger came with was very tasty. Very quaint and clean restaurant when we came for breakfast (9-11 a.m.). We got the "early bird special" (two eggs, meat, a choice of potatoes (hashbrown or country fried), and toast), coffee, and french toast The eggs were drenched in oil, the meat (I got bacon) was perfect, the potatos (country fried) were also perfect, the coffee was decent, and the french toast was good. Overall, a very good breakfast. The service can improve. The gal at the hostess desk did not greet me or smile, and she ended up being our server. She forgot our toast with our early bird special plate and we had to remind her about our french toast after we finished our plates. read more

While Sawmill still had its old charm, displaying some of Shaver's logging history, the food failed to impress. It sorely lacked flavor (we ordered burgers and lasagna). Sadly the service suffered, too. We understand that the servers were trying their best, but they should've had one more on their wait-staff for a busy Saturday evening. I will never go here again or trading post (their other local restaurant) again. We are locals and have never been treated so poorly at a local establishment. Love the ambiance of this place. Exactly what you are looking for in a mountain pub and restaurant. A cool "fireplace" artifact (aka the Steam Donkey) from the history of Shaver Lake is the centerpiece of the bar. Great place to warm and relax after a hike, ride, hunt or snow sport. We had great service and the whole staff was very friendly. I thought the menu was creative and simple. Lots of great comfort foods with good presentation. We had a great time. I had a side of macaroni and cheese that had no flavor and was dry. If you can screw up macaroni and cheese, you can screw up anything. Food was good but.... they're clearly short staffed. We went there for lunch on a weekend. They only have 2 servers (and 1 doubled as the bartender while the other doubled as the hostess). Ambiance was nice. It's a cool old mill building as the name suggests. Seating and lighting were vintage saloon style, appropriate for the vibe they are going for. We went around 5pm and the service was pretty good, though I think they were just opening up. I had a couple pints from Barrel House on tap but they ran out of both styles after that. No liquor here btw. My wife and I got the fried chicken and brisket meals. The Fried Chicken was well seasoned, tender and delicious! The campfire baked beans and mashed potatoes were also very good. The canned green beans were a little dressed down for the price of the plate, but they were fine. The brisket had some really good smokey flavor but it was sliced 1.5" thick at the wrong angle to the grain of the meat which made it tough and hard to eat. If they get that right ( thinner slices across the grain) there is a lot of potential for that dish. Portions we're good but the prices were a little high. Hoping they can keep it going though. Shaver needs more decent sit down spots. read more

For sure the worst meal I've had in at least 4 years. They aren't even trying to phone it in. Considering it is owned by the same people that own The Trading Post (one of my favorite restaurants in Fresno County), I thought it'd be pretty good. My mistake. Our meal of brisket really looked exactly like a meal I'd had in jr. high school cafeteria. The potatoes could be box potatoes with brown gravy on top, canned green beans, canned pinto beans, and a couple pieces of meat that were ok, and one piece of meat that was a 1/4 x 1/4 inch x 5 inch burnt piece that wasn't fit for human consumption. Oh - and beer and wine only, no real bar. I really want this place to succeed, as Shaver needs some more dining options. But I'll never be back to Sawmill. Guys, when you open The Point - please at least try. read more

We were so looking forward to returning to the Sawmill. We had enjoyed it many moons ago and was happy to see it reopen. Boy, what a disappointment. We loved our server who was wonderful. She did everything she could to make it great but it was the worst. I don't think I've ever written an awful review but I'm hoping it gets better so we can return. For starters, the menu is misleading. My husband had the "Fried Chicken Dinner". It says hand breaded so we thought that meant a few pieces of chicken (thigh, breast, win, etc.). Nope, it was a thin chicken patty that looked like it was just a frozen patty. The vegetable was canned green beans. I ordered Mac and Cheese with 3 cheeses and topped with breadcrumbs and Parmesan, according to the menu. There wasn't any cheese in it, no breadcrumbs, no Parmesan. It was just water. I really could hardly believe there was no taste, whatsoever. Our server was so apologetic and comped my Mac and cheese. She really felt bad. Hopefully, they will get a better chef and get this restaurant on track. The one star is for our server because we couldn't eat the food. It was tasteless. read more

Great service. The menu is simple and the quality high. The Burnt ends appetizer is amazing. My wife had them and the potato skin appetizer as a meal. Brisket dinner has a light smoke to perfection. Wished they had a burnt ends dinner. Our friends fried chicken dinner was crispy delicious. The steam boiler fire keeps it cozy with an old time Shaver saw mill feel. My wife saw reviews on Facebook about this restaurant and wanted to try it on our next trip to our cabin. Tonight we went and were very pleased. Service was very good and the food was very good as well. Both of us had the brisket, and it was great. The sides were of green beans, and pinto beans were great. I'm not a fan of gravy on mash potatoes but these were excellent as well. We will definitly be back. Always loved the ambiance of the sawmill in its past lives. I will preface this review with a few caveats. One, this review was from mid-January Two, the restaurant was newly opened for a couple weeks. I was excited to see that this iconic site had reopened. The Sawmill has been a landmark since my childhood and I love the history this place represents. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the expectations. We had a group of 10 of us for a late lunch. After we were begrudgingly seated, the staff seemed intent on getting us out as quickly as possible, definitely not the mountain charm I would have expected of a restaurant trying to make its mark. Had we known this would set the tone for the rest of the meal, we should have found another option. They were missing much of the basic restaurant staples required to run a business, which is surprising given the owners own two other restaurants in town. Sodas were served from 2L bottles and cans, there were no sweeteners other than sugar for tea. My wife ordered a salad, which came as only iceberg lettuce, and limited dressings (no low calorie option), and there was not an option to add any protein. I opted for the brisket sandwich with two others in our group. The meat was dry and there was no sauce provided, which required our unfriendly servers support to get some BBQ sauce. This must have been a chore since it took about 5 minutes, and I got about a tablespoon. I am hoping that this was just an anomaly, and they find a stride to keep this place going. I will not be quick to return, but will keep an eye on this place for improvements. I love the building and want to see it succeed. read more

My husband and I went here for Mothers Day a few months back. We were not intending to go here but wanted to get out to see what Shaver Lake has for breakfast. We were happily surprised when we pulled up and saw the Sawmill was open for breakfast. Our experience was great, many kinds of fresh mimosas along with friendly staff and wonderful food. Going back there this Sunday, June 24, 2024 was a whole different experience. Staff was pleasant but that's all I can say for the whole experience. The chicken fried steak was just that. No eggs, one peace of tiny toast, that we had to pay extra for and if you wanted more gravy cause it was basically watery and nonexistent there was a charge. Biscuits and gravy was cold, eggs not done and served not how we asked, cooked. One cup of coffee no offers for a refill and out of most of the fresh juice for the mimosas. We want this restaurant to get busy and stay open. We have memorable dinners there from when we first moved here over 30 years ago. We understand it's expensive all over and cost etc. But if you are going to serve only a limited menu then you should stay the course and knock it out of the park. Make it so people don't mind spending a little extra due to location and the history of the restaurant. At this time we won't be going back. We are not happy with our decision but our experience was worse and don't want to take the time or money to see if it's any better in the future. read more
