Hidden in the tiny town of New Kent, we stopped in here on a Thursday evening and what a find! We were warmly greeted at the door and quickly seated. We chose the high top tables in the bar area and so glad we did! From the minute we sat down, our waiter, Neal, was super friendly and helpful- sorely needed because their menu option was one of those square things you pull up on your tiny phone ( our ONLY criticism of this restaurant). There was a trivia game going on- nice touch if you aren't sensitive about how unknowledgeable you are about stuff!. The staff stopped by to chat and tend to us with whatever we needed. We ordered ribeye steak (cooked perfectly) and fish tacos- Our dessert was a salted caramel cheesecake that was absolutely scrumptious- even got a few to go. It was a pleasant experience to have such friendly waitstaff that wasn't rushing past you or ignoring you, yet left us to ourselves while eating. Neal was the best! We are forgiving patrons. All of us have worked in the industry benefit of the doubt a bad night just got worse. If we had a better server the experience would have been much better. There are pros and cons. 3/5 of us were very disappointed in the food. 1/5 on service. I don't know if it was understaffed but attending the bar patrons took over restaurant side. Being mid sentence trying to order and walked away from several times before we could finish was unprofessional. Appetizers hot, meals cold. My father and uncle got through about 3 bites of their meals and couldn't eat it anymore. Would recommend the fried pickles, deviled eggs and Cuban sub. read more

My wife and I both ordered the French Dip and fries, both of which were great. What made our visit special and 5+ stars was the wonderful service from Kenna. This place is so awesome! My mother and law were road tripping through and came here almost at random and it BLEW US AWAY. We had the Brussels stouts for an app and they were insanely good, like addicting. I had the blackened mahi-mahi and my MIL had the crab cake sandwich and both were just what we needed. We were excited to find something different to try. The hostess seated us outside (party of 2) at a table without an umbrella on a very warm day. We politely asked if we could be seated at a table with an umbrella which she did oblige but seemed to have an attitude. The server was prompt and polite. We both got bbq which tasted like frozen entrees from the grocery store. We both got "sour stomach" from it. We moved inside to cool off and have a drink and saw that NO patrons are being asked or required to wear masks. We remarked on our way in when we arrived that the signs requiring marks are not on the entrance doors. Patrons came and went walking about inside with no mask. Doubt we go back. Just not our thing and the lack of mask compliance bothered us not to mention bad taste after eating there. read more

While Geocaching in the area we decided to get some lunch here. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was great. I had a BLT, my sister had a chicken sandwich and my niece had a cheesesteak sandwich. We all had shoestring french fries, which were so yummy. The restaurant is big with plenty of seating. We really enjoyed our lunch and will definitely be back whenever we're in the area. read more

We came here two weeks ago, and the food was delicious! The wings with the house sauce were so good, definitely wanted more, and I definitely would recommend the buffalo chicken wrap. Shoestring fries are my absolute favorite, so it was such a wonderful surprise to see them on my plate. The service and the speed of food was definitely slow, but it's a brand new restaurant so it's very expected. The girls our front definitely seem nervous, so please be patient with them and the whole place, I can't imagine it doing anything but getting better! read more

This is one of those places that tries way too hard to be quirky and artsy with their serving, and it hurts the experience a bit. The little fryer baskets for the fries are cute until you realize that half of it is crumbs. Disappointed. I wanted to try this for the first time to be able to tell my clients where good restaurants are in New Kent. I got the buffalo chicken wrap and fries. I wasn't expecting anything more than bar food, but the wrap was practically inedible. It was soggy, falling apart, and barely had any buffalo sauce at all. The fries were just ok. I've written 14 Yelp reviews, but only 1 other was "1 star". Having personal experience of what it takes to run a business, I err on the side of the benefit of the doubt. I tried to do this with The Trojan Grill, as we support local and small businesses when possible. However, it became glaringly obvious that all my excuses for them, such as "maybe they are short-staffed today" just don't explain what we experienced. When we arrived nobody was at the front to greet us nor the other 2 groups standing there. Roughly 10 minutes elapsed before anybody showed up. The front station was littered with papers, a half finished salad, and soiled dishcloths. But again, I tried to give them a break. The wait was much longer than is normally acceptable-50 minutes for a simple lunch. When the food arrived, the salad had minimal dressing but was okay. However, my dining partner's fries were stone cold and even worse, his Buffalo chicken wrap had no chicken!! Seriously!!! He took several bites of the first half trying to find any chicken before pulling the second half apart to discover zero meat!! When the server returned and he showed her the problem, her attitude was surprising! She acted almost put out and gave a very defensive apology, saying "it was an honest mistake" and "well, you ate half!" (And this after we prefaced our comments by saying,, "we know this isn't your fault but...") Rather than bring a whole fresh wrap, several minutes elapsed before she brought out a small dish of shredded chicken to add on. I will add the server did take that entry off the bill, but at that point we made a decision to never eat there again, nor could we ever recommend it. read more

This place started off rough, but now is much better! For the area it's actually pretty good. The burgers and sandwiches are my favorite. Brunch on the weekends is also really good! They did great at taking care of customers during COVID. If you're in the area, I recommend checking them out and ordering the Boss Burger! read more

I was told about the Trojan Grill by my daughter who really liked it. So we decided to meet there for lunch. First, it's real nice inside and a very nice different. Second, Our server was NICOLE who was helpful, knowledgeable, professional, happy, attentive and made us feel welcome. We would return because of her very sweet attitude even if the food wasn't good. But the food was excellent. Therefore we decided to have the Trojan as our meeting place. Three reasons, first NICOLE, second great food and third because it's half between our homes, daughter in Richond, ours in Gloucester. Thanks NICOLE for great lunches today! read more

I probably wouldn't go back to this place. Another Yelper had a good comment: it's a really simple menu, but they haven't mastered any of it. Our server was nice, but not very knowledgeable. We asked her about a dish and she couldn't answer. She gave us her "best guess" though. The food was subpar and a bit overpriced. I got the BBQ burger and the fried onions were stale and cold. Hardly any bbq sauce. My friend's burger wasn't cooked all the way through. Why offer "pink or no pink"? The fries were so floppy and also on the cold side. We go here often to get a nice meal along with wonderful service. The fried chicken meals, sandwich or dinner plate are both top favs. The Mac and cheese is great the fried are the best. Food was basic. They were out of two of the main menu items, and the chicken tacos were nothing more than a chicken tender enclosed in a burned soft shell, and way overpriced. Also agree with a previous review that the French Fries were terrible. Had salmon on a previous visit, which was very good, so I may give this place one more try, but if they want to survive more than a few months more, they will need to adjust their prices and greatly improve the quality of the food - (and have better management by not running out of main entrees and salads). read more

We've heard mixed reviews but my husband really wanted to try it; so we did. Big mistake will not go back. My mom ordered the ribeye steak medium. It came out well done. It wasn't terrible but not what you want to pay $20 on. We can go to Longhorn and spend that for an amazing steak! My husband and I both got the fried shrimp. They presentation looked great but the shrim was chewiy and had no flavor at all. I ordered mashed potatoes as my side and they came out cold and it looked like potato salad...not mashed at all. Asked the waiter about it and he said it was mashed but they looked completely different than my moms side of mashed potatoes. My son had the fried fish cod strips. They were cold and slimy all the breading fell off and had no seasoning to them. Overall it was just blah. For the money we paid on the meals you would expect it to have flavor and taste good. Three strikes for this place. First time we went service was subpar and food was ok, but they had just opened so we gave them a pass. Second time service was still subpar, food was decent. Biggest complaint was no condiments came with the burger. Waited for the waitress to return to ask for some mayo and by that time everyone else was done eating. Third time, service was horrible. Was brought another tables food twice. Tried the chicken sandwich, which came with no condiments. Had to ask for mayo which took another 15 minutes. Also had three at the table get fries with their meals and it must have been the last of the batch. Two had decent fries while one had a plate full of fry "crumbs", mostly half an inch long. My daughter had to hunt down the waitress to ask for dessert after she walked by he table and dropped the check without asking if we needed anything else. Poor service and below average food. Such a good opportunity for a decent restaurant in this area but the execution is not there. read more

Aspen Burger Company returns!! For those who don't know what Aspen Burger Company was please let me share. It was an over priced burger joint that occupied this same building where this little gem of a place known as Trojan Grill now occupies. Well this was my first time dining here and I'm predicting they will go down the same drain of epic failure as Aspen Burger did. Here is why I say that. First, the wait time for what we received is unacceptable. I ordered the club sandwich that comes with fries. I'm pretty sure that everyone who reads this and has ever ordered a club sandwich knows it's a double decker sandwich that is cut into quarters. According to Trojan Grill it's two pieces of white bread, cut in half, with a piece of ham, turkey, microwaved bacon, absolutely no mayo, one slice of tomato, three pieces of spring mix lettuce (I counted them), a slice of provolone, and a slice of onion (menu says onion but it was missing on mine). I really wish I had taken a picture of this culinary masterpiece. They are getting $8 for something that looks like it emerged from a fourth graders lunch box. So of course when I was presented with this delicious meal I complained because asking me or anyone to pay $8 for this is crazy. I was then blessed with the presence of the manager. Well I'm assuming he is, after all he didn't introduce himself or otherwise identify himself as the manager. Although I didn't ask for it he did remove the "club" sandwich from my bill. However he seemed irritated and did not handle my complaint professionally, especially when he told me he has received about 3 complaints on the club sandwich. So how many complaints do you need before you realize there is a problem? Again, going down the same road as the burger place that was there before them. If you are looking for a bar/grill restaurant in New Kent go to Third Base Grill. Oh, and I don't know what's going on with the fries, they are very thin and limp. Looks like someone pushed a potato through some sort of grinder. I would recommend that the manager / owner learn to listen to their customers. In a small community like NK, it doesn't take long for a business such as a restaurant to fail due to word of mouth advertising. I'll never go back. read more

Went to the Trojan Grill for dinner a few Saturdays ago. I had heard that there is usually a long wait, so we got there a little earlier than we normally would've - 5:30 ish. The place is nicely decorated and seemed very clean. It was a little loud, but we didn't mind that. We didn't have to wait for a table at all. Upon seating, we were greeting by a super friendly, very knowledgeable young lady Christine I believe it was. She was great!!!!!!! My husband and I both got the bbq burgers and substituted for brussel sprouts because we had an appetizer of truffle fries. The fries were really good and a great price; however, there weren't many of them. They come in a cone shaped dish on a plate and were very tasty. I personally would like a larger portion for the appetizer (since people usually share) and would be willing to pay a little more. I believe they were $5.00. The bbq burgers were really really good. I'm not really a big burger eater, but I wanted to try it after reading reviews. It did not disappoint. It was juicy and had a great flavor. The brussel sprouts were DELICIOUS. I highly recommend them. To be fair, yes, I would recommend this restaurant, but look at the menu before you go. We didn't think there was much variety if you don't love sandwiches or salads, but, being a new restaurant, that is understandable. Also, the owner stopped by our table a few times and greeted us and even got us more drinks when the waitress was taking a large order. I appreciated that. That's good customer service and paired with the good food, we will keep coming back. read more
