Fantastic location, it's bar food so if that's what you're in the mood for, it's wonderful. They have great house cocktails, very tasty and of course good beer. Be sure to sit outside on the river if the weather is nice. Best spot in town for a casual change of pace from classic German food.

When it comes to spots on the main drag in Helen, I like this one slightly more than the rest. What really made it stand out was it's set up inside with plenty of TVs, all of which had various college sports on. We ended up seeking it out b/c we wanted to watch college football. They have solid indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is right by the river. On the indoor side you have a very small bar but plenty of TVs around the establishment. The food is fine but nothing terribly special. But they do have a fair amount of beer on tap. The overall experience is solid. We were able to watch football, eat and drink beer. I suspect I will end up back here the next time I visit Helen. I'd suggest swinging by if you get the chance.

Came in Friday Sept 20th 2025 about 9pm. We got seated promptly inside as outside had a wait time. Inside was not crowded, probably 25% occupied, if that. There were several wait staff walking around. Our server came over after about 10 minutes of waiting and took our drink order, but since we had to wait long enough we were ready to give our dinner order. I ordered an Arnold Palmer with unsweetened tea to drink and my buddy ordered a water. We got an unsweetened tea for him (again, he ordered water) and I got an unsweet tea with a tiny bit of lemonade. She went back to get my buddies water and that took another 10 minutes. We both ordered the fish and chips, which is haddock and fries and a side. I had the side of red skin mashed potatoes and seasonal rice. My buddy had the side of coleslaw and beans. The fish was horrible. It was probably microwaved frozen fish from a grocery store in Cleveland. The skin was greasy and paper like, the fish itself was bland. My potatoes were even bland, the only thing that had any flavor was the "packaged" Ken's tartar sauce that probably came from the same grocery store. My friend and I were both not just unhappy with the meal and the price we paid ($24 for just the food and almost $4 for the tea), we also felt nauseated after eating, probably from all the greasy fish. We ate most of it because we were hungry already. I could have stayed home and bought a tv dinner and been happier. The whole time we were eating the server NEVER came back to our table. We were polite, gracious and friendly so we're not sure what happened but AGAIN they were NOT busy. Overall the place was clean and at least they had some college football games on so that's why I gave an extra star for atmosphere. I've eaten here before but sat outside last time (plus it was probably 5 years ago). Seems like last time was much better. I certainly won't return and absolutely do not recommend, which is very rare for me as I usually try to give places another chance or the benefit of the doubt because every place has a bad day, and yet in this instance absolutely not. This service and food experience was horrible. Good luck.

I was walking around and saw that this place was right across the street. We (my mom and I) were able to get a seat outside by the river, which is so nice for the warm, fall weather. We were greeted pretty fast and went ahead and ordered our drinks. Their menu varies from salads, to burgers, to German food items, so basically like a tavern with a hint of German. We got a garden salad, a side of mashed potatoes with brown gravy, and a bratwurst. It was my first time trying a bratwurst, so with nothing to compare I'd say it was pretty good for my first experience. The staff was so nice, loved the vibes especially since it's Oktoberfest season.

My wife had a club and they left the bacon off.Also her margarita wasn't good.The service was good.My goblin burger was good.The beer was cold.It was raining but normally it would be great to sit on their riverfront seating.I will give it another try.But based off my wife not being happy I am giving them 3 stars from The Working Man Review.

We had lunch here on a Monday during October fest. It was hopping but we still got a table inside. There was a wait for a creek side table outside. We ordered the brat on a pretzel roll and the fish and chips. A mountain mule, Pilsner, and some pickle fries started us off. Alas I was absorbed in the company and failed to take pictures of the food but fiddle Dee Dee, don't let that stop you from coming in. We enjoyed it thoroughly. The service was friendly and prompt. We appreciated the laid back atmosphere. You will too!

Our favorite place to eat in Helen. Outside or inside, you can't go wrong! Great service, super good food and they have clean restrooms which is a rare find in Helen during the Oktoberfest. My favorite hamburger has been discontinued there and I keep hoping they will bring it back (the Billy goat)

The views at this restaurant were great especially if you sit outside but the food and service were just okay. There are better quality options in Helen for the same kind of food but I can see how their location makes eating here extra appealing. I'm glad we did it once but probably won't be returning. I will also give it to them that the portions are quite large so we left full but slightly underwhelmed.

One of the most beautiful and enjoyable diners in North Georgia with an amazing view of the Helen river and the Main Street bridge above it. Has a good selection of food and drinks as well. Food: Every time I visit Helen, I make sure to visit this place. The pretzels here are fabulous with beer cheese and spicy mustard. The fried pickles, fried cauliflower, the vegan burger is a delight. Hot chocolate and sodas are the only drinks I have tried. Plenty of vegan options and with a good taste; slightly on the bland side but that's okay. Ambience & Service: The ambience is just amazing. Always there are some amazing people around and especially if you are seated besides the river, and if it's summer, then that's you best spot. To watch all the tubing while having your food and drinks is just amazing. The service is excellent, even on the busiest day we don't get to wait for more than 10 minutes. Staffs are great and respectful. BOTTOMLINE: Good food; great views. Should be your go to place in Helen. MY PICKS FOR YOU: Fried Pickle, Pretzels

It's fine. Nothing outstanding or special. I grew up in Atl and have been to Helen roughly once every ten years or so at different ages and stages of life. And have been to this restaurant 3 separate occasions years apart. It's fine. Nothing particularly special. I will say if you are visiting during a particularly busy time (this most recent visit was the day after Christmas-something I DO NOT RECOMMEND but we had family in town who had never been and wanted to experience Helen at the holidays) this was the fastest seating option (5min for outdoor seating vs over an hour for literally everywhere else, though indoor was also over an hour here) so we ate here. I heard someone refer to it as the "sports bar of Helen" and that feels pretty accurate to me. It was loud. Bathrooms were gross. There was no soap in either dispenser which is pretty bad for a place that service a lot food that's meant to be handled by hands (like sandwiches) I told a bar tender and asked for hand sanitizer and he rolled his eyes at me. Never brought any or spoke to me. After a while passed and we had ordered I went back to try to wash my hands and there was still not soap in the ladies I told someone else and they got it taken care of immediately thank god because I'm not sure I would have been able to eat my sandwich. That may seem dramatic but the bathroom was pretty gross so to not be able to wash my hands with soap did not leave me feeling comfortable with that. Food was fine. Some better than others . I ordered a French dip sandwich and subbed fries for the chips that comes with it (an up charge if $2) the sandwich was okay. Not great-not bad just meh. I wouldn't order it again. But the fries were very good. My husband orders a Rubin which was very good. The key for both of us is making sure the bread is crispy not soggy at all and this stayed crispy until the last bite. His side of mash was also very good but had a flavor to it we couldn't place. Our table also ordered a total of 4 hot ciders (two of us ordered two each) and they were drastically different each time. From the flavor to the size. Totally different but not different pricing. They also do not come with a lid so they went from hot to cold very quickly. Also just a note there were no heat lamps in December in the patio and it was cold. We were fine because we're bundled but who doesn't have heat lamps or outdoor winter dining anymore? I also did not see if there was a ramp or elevator anywhere but there was definitely multiple stairs to get down to the entrance and up the indoor dining room/bar/bathroom. Just because I didn't see it doesn't me it wasn't there but just putting that out there. Like I said I have been here a few time over a wide span of time and there are definitely other options but this was the fastest option during my most recent visit. It's fine. I wouldn't tell someone to go here or recommend it at all but in a pinch it's fine. If you go order the Rubin as it was in fact very good and definitely sub for fries, but everything was sort of disappointing even for just a normal grill style establishment.

Service was bad, beer took forever, and pretzel was hard as a rock. Points only for the view.

Three stars for food presentation and quality. Service was terrible. Hostess was warm and welcoming when we arrived and sat us quickly. The waitress was slower than a sloth which was brutal. We ordered the pretzel with the beer cheese to start. The pretzel was fair the beer sauce was excellent. For lunch we had the French dip, the grilled cheese, trout, and a chicken salad. The trout was hands down the BEST. Cooked beautiful and had a great flavor. Music didn't add to the ambiance. The river was nice and we would have loved listening to the water more than the music that was being played.

Aptly named because it's under the bridge! If you're a fan of German fare, this is a good option in Helen. Pretzels, bratwurst, knockwurst, schnitzel, as well as things like salads and sandwiches. We all enjoyed our meals (grilled cheese with bacon, bratwurst, and roast beast) as well as the pretzel with beer cheese appetizer. Our server was attentive and friendly. Overall, a good choice for lunch!

Disappointed basically sums up our visit. Beautiful on the outside, but lacking on the inside. My wife and I were hoping for a good German style dinner since we were in Helen for Oktoberfest. The exterior and patio are beautiful. It's situated right on the river. However, on our visit we were sat inside because it was about to rain. The interior lacked any Bavarian ambiance that one would expect when visiting Helen. It's a plain looking restaurant and bar without much personality. I wish we had left at that point, but we were already there and hungry. Service was great and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, the menu was as boring as the atmosphere. Typical bar food with the addition of bratwurst and knockwurst. My Reuben was okay, but my wife said her shrimp dinner tasted like it was the same thing one could buy frozen in a bag. The Cole slaw was a little off like it had been sitting out all day. The shrimp was overpriced at $20. Afterwards, we walked around town seeing other restaurants and wishing we had eaten there. With a prime location and a gorgeous exterior, there is so much potential for this to be an amazing dining experience. Unfortunately, The Troll let us down. read more

Food was decent and fairly priced for the area which is why we went, but the service was awful. The waitress cornered us and verbally attacked us, calling us names refused to admit what she did wrong when we told her why we didn't tip and tried to blame us for her issues, and went as far as to call us "broke" and chasing after us when we tried to leave after paying our bill because in her words, " she served us in the cold and we should have tipped her anyways". We told the hostess we would be open to sitting anywhere, and she placed it outside. If the waitress really did not want to be in the court she should've told her manager instead of screaming at us for her crappy attitude and poor service. Manager didn't help much after and told us we should have asked for a manager sooner so they could try and fix this situation and maybe comp our food but we literally told her we were fine paying for the food. We just did not feel like we should tip when we got barely any service, and we did not want to involve a manager or make a scene, which is why we tried to pay and leave. Typical tavern food. I gave them a three because they honestly don't have anything special about their menu. Location is their best attribute. Right on the river. My husband and I split a Reuben with onion rings. As far as Ruebens go I've had a Reuben that I can make better at home. We stopped here mainly for the atmosphere. So if you're visiting Helen Georgia you can stop here if you just want to eat by the river. Pretty sure there's better food at other places along their Main Street. .All in all it wasn't a bad experience I just ate at a tavern along the river. read more

After seeing the reviews of this place, I wish I had taken more pictures of our food. We had a group of about 12 and they were very accommodating. Our food came in a decent amount of time. We all liked what we ordered. Our waiter was fantastic. The view was fantastic. Parking was probably the most annoying thing, but we otherwise had no complaints. There aren't a lot of eating options in Helen, but I would say this was one of the better ones. read more

We were there 9/16/23. Brought our pups but weren't allowed to have them on the outside patio. Which was ok so we got our food to go. I had the fried pork chop and mashed potatoes. Which was amazing. My husband had the cheese burger. He said was the best burger he has ever eaten. Yes we will be back!! read more

I'd give this place a 4 rating for the drinks, service and scenery on the outdoor patio but a 3 on their food and inside. We went on a Tuesday around 1pm and had a 25 minute wait for a riverside table which was worth it. The tables are close together which makes it hard when handicapped. Ali was our server and she was amazing!! She didn't make us feel rushed for wanting to relax and enjoy drinks before ordering and she was very attentive. They had a large drink selection that were priced good and strong; however, the Bloody Mary said fully loaded and only had a lime wedge. The food however was lacking. The bang bang shrimp was fairly small for the price and I'm not sure what sauce they had but it was hot like Sriracha and not the traditional creamy tai chili sauce. The fish and chips was average (tasted frozen not battered and fresh). The beer cheese soup was creamy and not very cheesy tasting. This is a good place to relax and have drinks but the food was just mediocre. read more

Overall 3/5: This experience was average. Will probably not return if I'm in Helen. Good 3/5: I had the shrimp dinner and we also got the pickle fries. The pickle fries were definitely not what I was expecting, but they just were okay. They were very thin and mostly batter than the pickle part. The shrimp dinner was also okay. Good portions, but everything just had such a weird after taste. Service 3/5: It took awhile for anyone to get to us and when they did they were just rushing us to take our orders. Everything came out super sporadically and was not timed well. Environment 3/5: Everything just felt sticky. The menus, the tables, the chairs. Just not too clean. Will probably not be back. read more

The Wurst-Combo? More like the Worst-Combo. Soggy bread, a hot dog described as a knockwurst, mashed potatoes that were more watery than the river outside, and more flies than a barn. This place is a dump. My girlfriends salmon was literally spongey. Honest to god the only good part was the croutons from her salad that I snacked on. No one should go to this place. Shut it down and replace it with real authentic German food and actual German decor instead of low resolution televisions playing American sports and sports memorabilia on the walls. The name of this place led me to believe it would be a fun, fantasy restaurant with a Troll theme but the only thing I got was trolled by the owners. -UPDATE- 6 hours later my girlfriend began to have symptoms of food poisoning that lasted all night when this was the last thing we ate. DO NOT EAT HERE. YOU. WILL. REGRET. IT! Today is my mother's 84th birthday, so my daughter and I decided to take her to this tavern for a special lunch celebration. We expected to have a lovely, German-infused lunch as a family, but we ended up leaving absolutely disgusted with upset stomachs! I love a good street taco, so I ordered the shrimp tacos as my entree. I take one bite, only to find my precious tacos filled with RAW grey & blue shrimp? I immediately flag down our waitress..."Excuse me. These tacos are not cooked!" She smirks, says nothing, and walks away. She did not even apologize for serving me practically alive fish? She did not even offer to replace my dish for the atrocity she previously served me?! Alexa did not even take the raw shrimp tacos off of our check or remove them from the table. HOW RUDE. I then chose to speak with the manager instead because I decided our waitress' bad attitude was simply not worth dealing with! The manager turns out to be JUST AS RUDE, IF NOT MORE RUDE than her co-worker. "I can assure you these tacos are cooked. They are only blue and grey because of the cabbages. I can give you a discount on the tacos, but we usually try to handle these problems during the meal not afterwards." Um, EXCUSE ME? Is the customer not ALWAYS right? Did I not JUST try to "take this up" with your waitress DURING MY MEAL? How about YOU take a bite and tell me they are cooked then? INCREDIBLEEEEEEE! The table behind us was also taken aback by the manager's unprofessionalism, and agreed that the shrimp was totally raw. (Says a lot when even strangers attempt to back up other strangers!) My family and I will not be returning to this restaurant EVER AGAIN. In fact, I may even consider reporting this tavern to health services. If they are willing to serve raw shrimp, I wonder what else they are serving to their customers!!! read more

Oh boy did we have expectations, just not the kind we got. Place was cute had good out door seating. But the food was way over priced for what u got. Burgers were dry dry dry. We order med rear so not sure why so dry. Nothing tricky about a burger ur going to pay $14. for. Ruben sandwich was like "where's the meat", again over priced for what u got. Fries were an up charge with every sandwich. I'm told the Chicken wrap was also very dry, no taste. I feel like I'm trolling the troll tavern, but come on, if ur going to have high prices at least make the food worth eating. read more

I visited Troll Tavern in early June 2023 and the place was packed. All the staff were very kind and courteous. We weren't terribly hungry but went in to get out of the heat and to have a beer and an appetizer. I wanted to try a German beer since we were in a German-inspired town, and the waitress recommended one. It was very strong but delicious (sorry, can't remember the name of it). We ordered Bavarian pretzels and fried cauliflower. Both were wonderful. Fun, open atmosphere. I took off one star because it was very warm inside and I had to fan myself with the menu to cool down. But food and staff were great. read more

I recently went to The Troll Tavern during our visit for Octoberfest. The establishment has a fantastic location on the Chattahoochee River, so you get a great view of the scenery here. I highly recommend it if you can sit outdoors or near a window! I loved the sign next to the hostess that said being short-staffed is the new pandemic and to be patient. (They aren't kidding) The food was ok, nothing crazy or out of this world, and service was prolonged, but we understood why. Overall it's a decent place for food if you're visiting Helen, GA. read more

I came here with a group of 5 friends on a Saturday afternoon/ night. When we got there we only had to wait about 15 minutes, which wasn't bad at all with how busy it was. Our server was very nice, but the wait for our food was not okay. The prices of the food was expensive for the quality and for the dishes that they served. I only had an appetizer and a Po' Boy and it ran me $40. One of my friends ordered a Tavern Burger, but was served a Roast Beef sandwich. Another friend in the group ordered a chicken bacon ranch wrap and mentioned the chicken was NOT fresh and could tell it was cooked the day or night before. Another group members' food made her sick and gave her diarrhea and gas. Overall, it wasn't a good experience. Not sure if it was an off day or short staffed in the kitchen, but it wasn't giving what it was supposed to give. read more

3 stars for the environment and location. It's Helen, so you expect semi decent German food. Well. Unless I was all wrong in my selection of the 2 brat dinner ($15). Then they are light years behind their counter parts up the street. I couldn't stop salting my plate, trying to force some flavor. Nothing worked. I ate about half of one link and gave up. I was eating but tasted nothing. For only the second time in my life, I asked to take it back. I just couldn't see paying all that money for empty calories. My husband got the same thing and also felt it was lackluster but he ate it. My son, if you read my reviews got the norm. Chicken tenders and fries. These ended up being partially my meal. Chicken was huge and great, the fries were also delicious! Bar Food A+ My MIL got a huge side salad and they let her as a senior get a kids meal. She got grilled shrimp and fries. Her total was $16 for those items. I thought the side salad price was kinda crazy ($7 or $8) it was rather large though. We definitely will go elsewhere for German fare but, If the bar prices were right, I could eat those chicken tenders again. read more

THE MASHED POTATOES ARE FROM A BOX! Not good. Sausages were bland. Sauerkraut was boring. Red cabbage was ok. Pretzels were decent. The Ruben was very skimpy on the meat. read more

I just went a few minutes ago to get a table for 4. The manager and servers were VERY VERY RUDE to us about getting a table. They had a table open and she said they didn't know how long it was going to take to clean it for us. As soon as she saw we were Hispanics her mood changed, manager is super unprofessional, it's a touristic place, you shouldn't have this type of people working here. I am a server and this treatment was the last thing I was expecting. read more

Its a fun place to sit on the river and watch the tubers float by. They have a diverse list of drinks. I tried a few of them. The names escape me, but one had a LOT of rum in it. Maybe that's why. There are relatively no locals in this town that I noticed. This place is no different. It had some feeling of the Riverwalk in San Antonio with music, lots of people drinking and eating and close proximity to the water. It is a good place to kill the afternoon in the shade on a hot day. read more

The waitress was so nice and attentive. The drinking water was not good. The food was excellent. We got the Reuben and the chicken wrap. Their ranch is delicious. 10/10 recommend! The atmosphere was nice and right on the water. They have a patio too where you can watch the river and people tubing. The prices were reasonable around $15-$20 dollars or so. read more

Honestly, I saw the lower stars and opted to go to Alpine Brew the first day and I truly regretted it. After reading some of the reviews we decided to try it the next day and it was truly the best food in the downtown Helen area. I still wouldn't say it's exceptional by any means, but much better than the mediocre meals we ate all weekend. I got the BLT and we had the beer cheese pretzel and it was quite delicious! The service was awesome even with how busy it was and the outside view along the water rounded it all up. My favorite place we went all weekend! read more

The service was not good here our server sat down right next to us and ate while I was waiting on my food to come out correctly. The grilled pork chop was very good. The red cabbage and sauerkraut was hard to get down. I wouldn't recommend coming here read more

The German food was spot on! Bratwurst, sauerkraut, potatoes and (turkey) Reuban sandwich with all the fixings. Excellent! Great lunch during a walkabout in the beautiful Swiss/german hamlet of a town. Service from the lovely hostess greeter to our excellent server is a 10+! read more

There isn't a whole lot of dinning options in Helen. So when we were looking for a quick spot for lunch we decided to come here, mainly because it has nice outside seating options and they had some open tables. Honestly after seeing the reviews I was worried. I was expecting the worse. However it was fine. Maybe because my expectations were so low. Nothing was amazing, but it was good. The service was decent, food was good, beer was cold, view was great. It was all we wanted, nothing more, nothing less. Overall a pleasant experience would have lunch here again. read more

There is beautiful outdoor seating by the river,but was a little to chilly for that this evening. Tables were well spaced inside though & servers were all wearing masks correctly. The under the bridge salad was delicious! Fried chicken breast on a bed of fresh greens with goat cheese, dried cranberries, croutons, and a strawberry vinaigrette, yum! Overpriced, bland, and kinda gross. The restaurant appeared dirty and we spent our entire meal being swarmed with flies. My boyfriend got the Wurst Combo, which practically tasted like hot dogs. I got the garden salad with grilled salmon and all of the ingredients tasted like they've been sitting out for days and the salmon was kinda murky. I feel trolled by this restaurant. Tasteless. Everything we had tasted like nothing, I think they ran out of salt? We had the pretzel and bang bang shrimp to start. The "beer cheese" that's served with the pretzel is actually beer cheese soup, and it was cold. The bang bang shrimp are just over cooked frozen pre breaded shrimp with a from-the-jar sauce served on the side. Then we had the triple platter, all 4 people at the table agreed the sausages tasted like nothing, the schnitzel was fine. Beer was cold but somehow our appetizers came out before our drinks... then the entrees took over half an hour. The pre packaged honey mustard and the mustard on the table were the best things. What a waste of prime real estate. Just an incredible location to eat out on the patio, the Chattahoochee 10-15ft from your table and the beautiful lights of downtown Helen reflecting off the water. Instant mashed potatoes? Check. Stale bun for the mediocre brat? Check. Dirty tap lines for the beer? Check. Cheese fries that are a half pound of cheese soaking grease through the burnt fries? Check. Awful cocktail? Check. Out of menu items? Check. Bad service? Check. I felt like I would've had a better night if I'd been assaulted by a man in full German garb stealing my $50 than paying for this meal...at least I would've had a good story. Instead... Meh. After waiting almost an hour, we were rushed to a table and not really told what their specials were or what was recommended. Service was slow, but place was very busy (mostly tourists like us probably). Good was a little bland. Didn't care for our server. Service was slow. We take a trip to Helen every October and always stop in to Troll Tavern to have a beer out on their patio. They hands down have some of the best chicken fingers! They pound them out nice and thin and they are super crispy. Their food is actually quite good for pub grub. My only negative input about this place is the service. The hostesses write your name down, and say they will "come find you" when your table is ready. However it is really up to you to go back and check. If you don't you might wait forever. The bartenders were also not super friendly. I ordered a glass of whitehaven wine, when my friend went to order the same thing after me they tried charging her $3 more than what they charged me. When she filed them, they said they had made a mistake charging me less...hmmmm shouldn't this be in their POS system? Anyway go for the food and ambiance, but don't expect much from the service side. read more

Troll Tavern is one of those little cutesy, touristy Bavarian style restaurants. Its located smack dab in the center of Helen right on the banks of the Chattahoochee River with an overlooking outdoor dining are. Indeed it's as close as you can get to the Chattahoochee. Though the Chattahoochee is usually too shallow and rocky for any swimming, the highlight of it for young kid tubers floating the currents, and on that count, Troll offers the best views. However, floating on inflatables here is only for the young or light of weight which became more than evident when I attempted floating it on a pink swan (pink swans are sooo me. LOL!) only to immediately bottom out and draw roars of laughter from onlookers. I can't say much for the food served here. It's OK, sort of average but without any dish I would consider as being exception or recommend. For my meal I had a special of the day schnitzel with a garlic German potato salad and red cabbage. Though the schnitzel was nicely breaded, decent enough in taste, the schnitzel was rather tough and could certainly have been pounded more thoroughly for tenderness. read more

This tavern is located downstairs from the main drag in Helen. It's easy to get to you but also easy to miss. We got a great seat by the water and once again got a chance to watch all the people going by on their rafts. It was pretty funny! The food is average bar food but the beer cheese that came with the pretzel was pretty amazing. We actually took an extra bowl of it home and eat it as soup the next day. Parking and all of Helen is a monster so be prepared to find a space and just walked the rest the day. This location was great because I had a live band next-door and we could easily hear the music but not deal with the crowd. Always go to while in Helen! read more

So sad this was the last meal in town after such a good trip otherwise.

When the server brought it back he told me to try a bite without sauce as their steaks are well seasoned. Boy was he right! The gunpowder seasoning along with the clarified butter really enhanced the flavor of the ribeye. My wife gave me a bite of her chicken Alfredo and it was well seasoned too. Nice balance of garlic. The sides are the reason for a the 4 star review, though if judged by the steak alone, it would easily be a 5 star review. I ordered the loaded mashed potatoes, and they were topped with cheese and bacon. The potatoes needed seasoning. Mostly salt, pepper, and butter. The same could be said of the Mac and cheese. Well... at least they got the name right. After the service my group experienced this weekend, I have no choice but to believe that The Troll Tavern truly is run by a group of, well, trolls. I suppose it's no coincidence that the entrance to the establishment lies under a bridge... While set in a beautiful creekside location, the idyllic setting is entirely wasted on a restaurant staffed by what can only be described as a high school clique of mean girls gone horribly astray... and trust me, it is so not fetch. My group came in past 8pm asking for a table. While we were admittedly a large group, we were excited to be told by the hostess that they did in fact have a table that could seat us, and only needed to clean it off and set it before we could be seated. After waiting over 20 minutes, we checked back in and were told to continue our wait. As soon as we turned around, one of the hostesses turned to the other and proclaimed "I'm just going to keep them waiting there." Shocked, we asked the girl to repeat herself, at which point we continued to receive a ridiculous childish attitude. When the manager - who was the same age and apparently the same degree of airheaded - came over, she brought with her all the attitude of a young Regina George, albeit with none of the redeeming wit or entertainment value. Laughing at the sheer number of other dining options available within walking distance, our group left and took our business across the river to Cafe International. As we left, the manager called after us "good luck waiting 45 minutes to find a place to eat!" Challenge accepted, backwoods Paris Hilton, challenge accepted. Never fear, intrepid readers, for this story has a positive ending. Our party was immediately sat at Cafe International, where we received amazing service the entire evening and left a generous tip on our large tab. And perhaps the best part - they sat us at a creekside table overlooking the Trollstess...erm...hostess stand across the river. To quote the penguins of Madagascar, all we did was "smile and wave, boys... smile and wave." Seriously, skip this joke of an establishment and head across the river for a MUCH better experience. Cafe International is, compared to The Troll Tavern, decidedly fetch. read more

When me and my family first visited Helen, GA; we fell in love with the food and the restaurant. We would go there three to four times in the four days we would be vacationing. However, over the last couple of years, the food has considerably declined. I went back to Helen for the fourth of July and decided to give The Troll one more chance. We got seated fairly fast and the service was friendly. But then came the food. My sister-in-law got the shrimp po boy and there was hardly any shrimp on it. My wife got the sausage platter and it tasted as if it had been microwaved right out of the freezer. My parents split the wiener schnitzel platter and I got one for myself. Instead of the nice, meaty, and a good sized portion; there were two VERY SMALL patties that had hardly any meat on them. They were tough, chewy and, again, tasted like they were microwaved right out of the freezer. The platter cost $17 but should only cost about $8. I love German food and this place has the worst German food I have ever tasted. I am sad to see this place go so far downhill. If anyone wants good food, my favorite places in Helen are: The Tavern (pizza), and Old Heidelberg (German). read more

Atmosphere is great but it's all downhill from there. We ordered a Tavern burger, grilled cheese,a club sandwich,and two pretzels for the appetizer. The pretzels came out cold and we had to send them back to get redone and they fine after that. When our lunch came the burger was fine but the grilled cheese was greasy and tasted weird. The club sandwich tasted as if the bread was molded! We sent the two back and didn't want anything else and thought the uneaten items would be taken off our bill, especially since they removed them from our table. The bill came to a grand total of $68.51 because it's their policy not to reimburse you for uneaten items. Totally unheard of and ridiculous policy. If you don't like your food and you don't eat it, you're going to pay for it anyway. Some tourist trap racket they have going on at this place. God help anyone who eats here and gets crappy food they can't eat. read more

My experience at Troll Tavern was a mixed bag. Upon arriving, we were promptly seated, but unfortunately, the service was sluggish despite our server's friendly demeanor. The food, particularly the muffaletta, was decent but not quite traditional, lacking in sufficient olive tapenade. However, the most significant letdown was the prolonged wait times, indicating possible understaffing issues. On the bright side, the ambiance by the river in the heart of town was delightful, earning a perfect score. Overall, Troll Tavern earns a middling 3/5 rating from me. I would give it another shot for sure, but hopefully quicker service. read more

this restaurant is in a cute location but let me tell you the food and service is not so cute. Apparently since I'm not 12 I can't get a drink with my kids meal and that sounds like discrimination to me. Guess what restaurant doesn't discriminate against people for kids meals. Chick-fil-A. What a prime example of quality food and quality service. The food at the troll cave was 4/10 but the sweet tea wasn't even sweet and the wifi was non-existent so Wendy's sounds like a better choice next time!! read more

Service was very very slow for a weekday, and not a lunch time visit either. Both seafood dishes were badly overcooked to the point they could not be eaten. The pretzel appetizer took 12 minutes to come out and the dinners hit the table on the heels of us finishing the appetizer. The seafood was greasy and way overcooked. Will never go back again, no way I'm gonna throw $50 at that place again. read more

Everything. You guys are awful people to your staff and to the customers. The food tastes nasty. The only thing this place has going for it is that it is on the river.
