    Nutcracker sandwich
    Jo D.

We came here after ice skating. It was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! I got the Nutcracker and it was so flavorful. I can't wait to go back and try another sandwich! It has tables set up outside of the cool shops in the building. They bring your food out and everyone is friendly!

I would look forward to eating at Twisted Fig because I LOVED their bread. Everything tasted so fresh. They have changed their bread in the last year and it just isn't the same anymore. I've tried the hoagie and sourdough and both are a little too hard for my liking. Anyways, decent sandwich, spendy, but supporting local!

Phenomenal food. The recommendations were spot on (The Gettin' Figgy Wit It and Cluckin' Good). The homemade ranch dressing has a freshness akin to fresh pesto and was delicious. The outside seating was very nice. Fun to watch the kids running around in the fountains. The main lady (perhaps owner?) was very sweet and again, gave great recommendations.

Chef here is amazing creating foods like no other. Loved the curry tomato soup and the rib eye sandwich called the Optimus Prime rib. I wished they were open later for business.

Cluck Norris and chicken & white bean chili

I found this cute sandwich shop after a Google search after the gym. I needed immediate sustenance and I wanted to try something local, unique and new to me. Every sandwich on the board reads like a love letter to a man on death row. With names like "Cluck Norris", "Pesto Perfection" and "That's My Jam", it invited me to read the description of each. The bread on my "Cluckin Good" was perfect. I'm mad I can't make crusty sourdough that comes out HALF as delicious as theirs did. Chewy inside and crust outside, it just added to the flavors of bacon, arugula, brie and a house-made vinaigrette on my sandwich. I also tried the chicken white bean chili and it, too, was perfection. Corn and proper pieces of chicken in a base that had the perfect blend of heat, youngsters may even enjoy it. Thanks a lot Twisted Fig... now I have to drive out of my way so I won't be disappointed when I purchase lunch closer to home. Honey (my little dog who was allowed inside and they even gave her a treat of greasy turkey) and I will be back soon!

Enough disappointed that our experience at this local owner operated, order at the counter and try to find a seat sandwich place (we ordered a sandwich to share and it came with chef's choice of salad of the day) was so different from glowing reviews that we likely won't go back. We did appreciate that the nice young man who came in about half way through our eating of mushy pasta salad and sandwich on less than fresh bread noting we didn't finish and had tossed half out, it is also a bus your own format, asked us on the way out how we liked the meal. FOOD: He was professional in asking and I returned my comments in the same vein of knowing one can't fix what one doesn't know is broken. His replies to my comments indicated they did know the problems that day and I very much appreciated his candor. I told him the flavors in the pasta salad and cut of the veg suggested it would have been really good for the sort of pesto flavors if fresh but it was past its' service prime for soggy veg and the penne, always a poor choice for pasta salad that needs to be held in refrigerator a while for service, was mushy and as a tip, cavatappi would be the penultimate choice for longevity. He said cavatappi is what is normally used but the chef had a catering job the evening before with this penne pasta salad used and the kitchen didn't want to waste the unused remainder so used it for lunch service on this day. That explained the poor quality issue. Also, I told him I was disappointed in the bread seemed stale, they use a good Boise baker for their bread and it is a baker I choose for my own use. He said I had a good palate because on this day it needed to be removed from the freezer and I can't recall the detail as I write my comments here but there had been some problem with the timing of the thaw that required microwave use and the bread was not up to usual par. All good to know, I told him, but it would have been better to know prior to ordering, "we are serving day old, mushy pasta salad and less than fresh bread with our sandwiches today for the same price as a first quality day". PRICE POINT: All sandwiches are served on split focaccia style bread and come with either bag of chips or salad of the day. Prices roughly $9 to $15. SERVICE: Since I have some gazillions of years old experience in this industry I understand every place can have a bad day. Which apparently was the case here at lunch service for the food and compounded by the owner / chef having the day off and while the young women in the tiny kitchen were doing their very best to try to keep up with taking and filling orders, there were a lot of seemingly local business people placing or picking up to go orders, they were 'in the weeds'. It happens. BOTTOM LINE: That all said, this little place is clearly popular with locals at lunch. And while we go out of our way to seek out and support local businesses, as in this was a destination dining choice for us on this day when we needed to be in Caldwell for other reasons, and we acknowledge poor quality things can happen to anyone on occasion, the service format and vibe aren't a fit for us to make the effort to return. (If we are looking for casual eats at lunch hour in downtown Caldwell with order at counter format again we'll mosey across Indian Creek Plaza to Flying M for coffee and bakery case options.) LOCATION / PARKING: Faces Indian Creek Plaza in downtown Caldwell. Parking is on street and entry to the eatery is on the plaza, so walk to the back of the building to find it. ACCESSIBILITY: Old building has been modified and the owner of building has ADA non-compliance issues with easily fixable 'bumps' in the entry and access to the main room that are out of compliance for height by just enough to be an impediment to wheelchair users. The ADA is clear as law and the State Building Code Access chapter mirrors it that when a building use is modified, as this one was, those entry in the door issues must be corrected. OUTDOOR SEATING: You can take your order out to eat at one of the public use tables on Indian Creek Plaza.

Not the lame video content where 2 seconds into a bite an actor says it is soooo amazing. This is the real deal. As far as Oaxacan, straight up nails the flavor profile - which only comes with multiple preparation steps, layers, and time. Thus the expense. The only authenticity deviation I can tell is that the spice level is much lower, which my wife appreciated. It has been so long since I've had a mole that didn't taste like Hershey coco powder cooked in an overly sweet base with a little pork fat. Or from a Sysco can. After having some great experiences in northern Mexico and southern CA, in the decades since I had given up on finding a good mole. Their Mole Negro was incredibly favorable and dances on the tongue for a solid 30 seconds. Braised beef short rib was perfectly cooked and fork tender. Mole - mwah! Can't recall ever having a charred sunchoke (as a side), but now it is on my radar because that was super tasty. Barbacoa de borrego... during a trip going through Quintana Roo, I shared a meal with an ethnic Mayan community where the meat was freshly slaughters, dry rubbed, wrapped in leaves, and slow pit cooked over embers in the ground. Amano's style is using agave, which I liked. From time to time I purchase Boise River lamb at the Meridian Main Street Farmers Market. It's way better than New Zealand lamb which always seems a little gamey/off to me. The broth provided just elevated each mouthful. To have local Boise River lamb prepared as an authentic barbacoa... Given the amount of meat you get, it's totally worth the $108 splurge. But wait, there's more. Scallop crudo - my wife said it reminded her of the fresh shrimp and fish ceviche we had in Playa del Carmen. I loved the pairing with jicama and slice of de-seeded jalapeno (not spicy). Only warning - the dry spice they sprinkle scallops with can be a bit strong for some. Beans, simply amazing. Rice, pretty good. 4 salsa's offered a real diversity of flavors to do different pairings. Provided tortillas seemed more like authentic maize that is well worked, not the fragile disks you can get in the grocery store. The tres leche lavender cake was enjoyable, but didn't blow me away. Everyone was very friendly. Our server was awesome and super helpful. Great menu of mescals, which was perfect for resetting the pallet. I guess they are going to start up a tasting room in the near future, which would be pretty interesting. To get that real taste without having to spend thousands on getting to where the authentic exists - simply awesome.

Our server, Ashley, was absolutely wonderful. Since it was our first visit, she thoroughly explained the menu and made excellent suggestions. She even showed me where Chef and owner Sal prepares the meats underground overnight and explained the extensive process behind them. Ashley then introduced me to Sal before giving me a peek inside the mezcal tasting room. I loved the agave goddess artwork in there! Sadly, I didn't get to meet his wife and business partner, Becca--but hopefully I will when we return! Ashley also took the time to show me the entrance to Cán Coctelería--Amano's speakeasy--from their outdoor dining patio. Now I have yet another reason to return! We started with drinks and cornbread. My Cadillac margarita was impressive! I also tried my hubby's Café de Olla--¡delicioso! I sampled their mezcal as well, and it was so tasty and warmed my heart in the best possible way! The cornbread was incredibly moist and buttery. They also serve a delicious sweet wheat bread that, in my opinion, is even better than chips and salsa! For my meal, I ordered the chilaquiles with eggs over easy and added birria. They were excellent! I love when the chips still have some texture and aren't completely soggy. These had the perfect sauce-to-chip ratio, along with a little spice--which I loved! My husband ordered the birria tacos and absolutely devoured them. The refreshing towel offered after our meal was another thoughtful touch and the perfect way to end the experience. Overall, I truly loved Amano! The food was delicious, the service was memorable, and the entire experience felt special. I'm already looking forward to returning, experiencing Cán Coctelería, and bringing our friends and relatives whenever they come to visit!
