This place was great! It was my first time here to see my favorite artist, SnowthaProduct. One of the smoothest venue experiences I've had when seeing her. My only complaint is how high the stage is when you're front row, but they're not alone in a stage configuration like that. Staff were great and on time. Everything was really organized and sound was perfect. Thank you UC Theatre!

This was my first time ever attending this theater, and I love the old-fashioned theatrics behind everything! It seemed rather comical to me that we were watching Wu-Tang crew in such an iconic classic turn of the century theater, but the set up was great!! Great sound system, beautiful Structure, and agree wall of famous people that have performed here! I didn't eat any food, but there were tables that people were sitting at and standing towards the back. We were on the lower floor without any tables around. They had open bars on the side, not open, but available to the customers. And drinks were well poured. The only odd thing I would say was the bathrooms were rather thrashed. It reminded me of an outdated bathroom I saw in a hole in the wall restaurant that had delicious food while in Taiwan. At least they had plumbing, but they were literally holes in the ground, holes in the wall and then random Boards, put up to cover up the holes within the woman's bathroom. About a block away there is a parking garage, other than that their street parking. We were lucky and found some street parking about two blocks away, so it wasn't too hard to walk. I wouldn't mind going back to seeing another show here again.

The UC Theatre totally surprised me, in both good and bad ways. I saw Sixpence None the Richer and Toad the Wet Sprocket here earlier this summer. I had meant to see at least two other shows here in years past, and I actually had tickets to a Steel Pulse concert that I didn't end up using because of--you know, life. Anyway. I expected an old-fashioned movie palace that had been hollowed out of most of its original playhouse velvet seats, with some once-new-but-now-old cushier seats still remaining. I also expected the back of the stage to be toward the street, for some reason. I have no idea why, but I was sure that it would be just so, and it turns out that the stage is to the right as you enter the building from University Avenue. It was an old-fashioned movie palace, but it was so old that it didn't really have the kind of tiered seating that I thought it would. When you enter, you're in the upper area. For this show, they had some seats set up up there, along with some open space. There were no seats in the lower area, where I stood. But there is this huge wall that was helpfully mostly empty when I arrived, so I staked out a place against it. I would be wildly annoyed by the horrid shenanigans of a few concertgoers in front of me, but that's not the venue's fault, so I'll drop it. The wall is at the back of the lower area, but it's still really close to the stage, making it the ideal place to be, as long as you don't mind standing the entire show. But it also just feels weird. Like why is the wall so tall, and what's with having only two levels, and why are they so far apart from each other? There's at least one bar on the upper level, and the one on the lower level is to the right as you're facing the stage. I wasn't standing too far from this bar, so I could see just how ruthlessly efficient these bartenders were, especially during the show itself. I got a drink between acts, and they sell food as well (pizza?), but I didn't try any. Since I worked only a few blocks from this venue for more than a decade, I'm glad I finally got to see a show here, but it was a little bit less exciting and definitely much less historic-feeling than I thought it would be. There are plenty of overpriced parking structures nearby, but if you're coming here at night or on the weekend, you can usually find parking in the neighborhood pretty easily, if you're willing to walk three or four blocks. Or, better yet, take BART. The Downtown Berkeley Station is very close. The sound is decent, at least from the lower level. I'm sure standing right against that wall made it even better. I wasn't upstairs for either act, so I don't know what it's like up there.

Horrible venue, horrible environment... The place is gross and overcrowded. I couldn't hear or see the musicians. I reached out to the venue and they don't seem to care. The show was just totally awful. Everyone seemed overserved and none of the staff seemed to care. Avoid this place if you are interested in performing arts.

My first visit to The UC Theatre since I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show years ago. What a magnificent space! I think the UC rivals the Fox Theater and The Paramount as an East Bay location to see music. Just a classically beautiful interior. An amazing show by Bonny Light Horseman - an American folk band who I first saw at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few years ago. If you have a chance go see this band. They rock! About the UC, everyone from security to the nice lady in the ticket both to the ushers to the awesome lady serving drinks to the audience were kind and obviously loved their jobs. The UC Theatre is a non-profit organization. Their Concert Career Pathways education program teaches young people the technical, creative and business aspects of concert and event promotion. Through hands-on workshops and paid internships they train the next generation of music industry professionals. A worthwhile cause. Matt says if you love music, go check out the UC Theatre. You will love the experience.

Went to see Oteil and Friends at the venue. The mosh pit was packed and we were constantly reminded to keep the back pathway clear. So if you end up in the pit, make sure to stand within the blue taped floor border or you will be asked to move along. There seem to be mixed reviews about the sound quality, but I found it pretty good! Been here once before for traditional Latino music and the sound was good, too Perhaps the quality depends on the type of music being played. Just taking a glance, the poor reviews seem to be directed towards heavy metal type music. I don't know. Guess your milage may vary. BTW. Love the high ceilings. Gave the place a sense of spaciousness even though it was totally packed.

I came here to see Valley in concert. A cute small venue! Very minimal amount of seating, so expect to be standing for the entire concert. There's a little bar that conveniently placed near the stage, and they provide complimentary water. The sound quality was great and the stage is quite elevated. Lighting and visuals were fun, but VERY BRIGHT lights would shine into the crowd often.

First time at the UC Theatre... employees were friendly and the venue was cool. However, I felt like the venue was oversold. It creates a lot of confusion when there are reserved tables + general admission. I understand everyone is trying to cash in these days but it created a traffic jam at this concert. Be ready for the hot dog vendors that pull up outside the venue after the show.

Attended a reggae concert here this past Friday (J Boog, The Green, Mike Love) and had an interesting experience. I mainly came for The Green, but all of the bands and musicians put on an extraordinary performance. Sound and lighting were quite impressive, allowing audience members a pleasurable music-filled evening. The music hall had beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, which worked nicely with the lighting during the show. Even the lobby had great appeal, decorated with artwork, photos, and posters of past events held at the UC Theatre. The standing room for general admission was a bit awkward and confusing in the venue (with reserved seating also an option for a higher ticket price). Luckily, we didn't have a problem finding space for enjoying a good view of the show. There were three bars inside the theater, but the drinks they served were gross. We got standard cocktails, and they were pretty much undrinkable (we took a few sips and tossed them). The venue was remarkable in many ways... too bad their drinks suck big time! At least that was our experience this past weekend. If you manage to find good drinks here, then consider yourself lucky.

Love it when metal bands and artists choose The UC Theatre as their venue! Close to downtown Berkeley Bart, beautiful venue, small and intimate with beautiful architecture and acoustics, this is a perfect concert hall to come to! I've been here twice in 2023 to see Tarja Turunen's first USA tour (Berkeley was her last stop, what an honor to have her visit here!) and Dragonforce with Amaranthe, NanowaR of Steel, and Edge of Paradise opening. Both times I've come early enough to stand close to the front, and had an absolute blast rocking out and singing along and taking in the performers' presence! What makes me love small concert halls like UC Theatre is that you get the best of both worlds of small and big venues. You get the intimacy of a small venue, with the great acoustics and performances on par with bigger venues. The UC Theatre is a winner, and I hope to come back for many more concerts.

As EVERYONE says...great for a small show. But they shoehorned Rise Against in last night (to a sold out show of course) so if you want to watch your band without standing or being in the pit...not a great venue. We literally stood in the back by the bar with tiny glimpses of the band from time to time. Almost walked out. I won't go back for anyone well known. Pluses include good sound, ample bars and staff, clean bathrooms etc. But if you want to occasionally sit and be able to enjoy the show at the same time...this ain't it.

Awesome venue! Such a cool place. The times I've gone they just had general admission so you could go wherever you want to see the show. There are three levels depending how close you want to get to the stage. They have a bar at the 2nd and 3rd level. The people who work there are what you'd expect at a concert hall. Be ware of parking! The parking garage across the street implies you can park til 2am but it's a trick, they lock the gate at 10pm and you get a parking ticket. Bad parking, great venue, no food.

Small venue with big artists! Finally got around to a show at the UC Theatre earlier this year and it was such a vibe. The show itself was incredible (I love STRFKR). The in and out of the theater was smooth. Security is standard, they do a lil padding down, check your bags, you know the drill. A quick stroll from downtown Berk bart station, plenty of street parking and there are multiple inexpensive parking garages in walking distance as well. Bathrooms are clean. Coat check is cash only. Plethora of bars on each level, keeping the lines short. Drink prices are typical: $13 dollar cocktails, $9 small brewskies. $8 white claws, if you want to keep it classy. The venue is refurbished theater, so I will say the acoustics aren't the greatest. The stage sits very low to the floor so it's not as visible as bigger venues but it's much more intimate. This space is a bit larger but feels are comparable to The Independent in city or Ace of Spades in Sac. I do not recommend if you don't like tight shows - this is probably one of the most packed pits I've been in. Very crowded and there was basically no moving once you picked a spot. I didn't explore the other levels but I heard there is seating. Best part about The UC Theatre is the minimal ticket fees!!!!!!! By the time I'm through purchasing a ticket through Ticketmaster, it feels like I've double the price with those damn fees. I think I paid maybe $12 in fees, which is very acceptable.

Great venue! Excellent sound, two or three tiers to stand or sit on, good sight lines all over the room. If you're going to see Neurosis anywhere besides the Great American Music Hall in SF, this is the place. I also REALLY appreciate that the UC does not use Ticketmaster, though the "convenience" fees on the tickets were still quite high through Ticketfly. Also, the theater is surrounded by delicious little restaurants, most notably Imm Thai. read more

Last night The California Black Expo Presents LaDy-SN3AK Live 3/12/2018 "Speak Your Truth" Showcase & Open Mic was amazing! All the artist blended together for what I can only explain as a supersonic soundtrack picture meaning that if your eyes did not see magic blossom then you were not that the UC Theater last night! Thank you UC Theater for putting on a great production you are a imaginative and talented group of individuals. read more

Could be the best venue is side of the missippi! I've seen countless shows here now, and i do say, phenomanol presentation every time. The staff is always curtious and helpful. Only thing i would change is the food, kinda limited. Anyway, I'm always looking forward to the next show to catch here. FIVE STARS!!! read more

The UC Theatre is a great place to see some pretty big acts. It's a large space, so it's not usually so packed you can't breathe or get up close. The venue appears to be well-run and professional: it's clean, nicely finished and--the big one--they start on time. I never cease to roll my eyes at venues that routinely don't start until half an hour after show time, so thank you UC for not being one of them. Security is tight at the door, but the front is run so well that the whole experience is pretty painless. One caveat for some music-lovers: this place is LOUD. This doesn't bother me, but I recognize that everyone is different. People who are sensitive to loud venues may wish to bring earplugs or hang out near the back. All in all, a great mid-sized venue for some great bands. We're lucky to have them. read more

The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall.- An expensive venue with a cheapo attention to customers. It is a mostly standing-only uncomfortable venue. People are shovel in shoulder to shoulder, with practically no seating available; no good specially on Covid times. The seats are not guaranteed. I paid $130 to see a 2 hours show standing up! No mercy. People talking and making all kinds of noises on the hallways and bad-tempered lantern carriers. Too many alcohol booths and alcohol sellers walking up and down the aisle selling booze and something that looks like microwaved pizzas. It appears that they are paid by commission: who sells more alcohol!! It really seems that patrons are the last of the priorities in The UC Theatre. We feel treated like a herd of swindled cows, who are being squeezed out of all possible money, at all costs; in a theater that boasts of being a proud institution of Berkeley? What a joke!! read more

We went and saw Get the Led Out which is a great act in itself.! Initially sat in the last tier which still was close enough and a great view of the stage. The other 2 tiers are lower, so you won't have too many heads to look through which is great. Later I moved up to the stage area which is a pit just in front of the stage. Definitely nice to have this option. Each tier had it's own bar which made it easy to get drinks too! Place has a very laid back feel. read more

Loved that it was close to Bart. Drinks were big and decent priced, Bartenders were attentive & quick. Quick and easy entrance through front security. Loved the remodel. The worst part, the security on the floor. Terribly rude. Not doing their job and watching the show instead. A group of about 5 guys people were knocking people down in the back of standing area. I went and told security and they just shrugged their shoulders and turned back to watch the show. If a concert is unsafe, people will not want to attend. Women were being knocked on the floor. Safety is a big issue when you have that many people on the floor.All they had to do was tell them to chill out... It clearly was too much for them to do their job. Hate that a easily preventable problem will stop me from coming back to this venue. read more

I had an amazing time at this venue! The sound quality is unrivaled - you can literally stand anywhere in the venue and it will not affect the quality of the show. The tiered layout made it possible for me to stand in the very back and still see and hear the show perfectly. I'm very short so this was a welcomed change of pace from other venues in the bay! The interior is also BEAUTIFUL - just looking at the details, it's clear what an amazing job was done during restoration. One aspect I really like about this venue is how intimate it feels. The high ceilings and floored tier plan make you feel like you have a lot of space but the vibe is very laid back and I would definitely recommend if you're going on a date or reconnecting with old friends. In regards to the bar - the drinks were good and I didn't have to wait in crazy lines to get served so that's always nice. :) It's also in a great location in Berkeley - so many great food places around if you want to grab a bite to eat before the show. Overall, A+! I will definitely be returning to this venue! read more

I had a chance to check out the UC Theatre when I went to see the Rides a month ago - a great show and a really cool venue! The band sounded fantastic and I was impressed with the setup at the UC Theatre now that they're really up and running. Despite a blackout in the neighborhood prior to the show, the staff didn't miss a beat and we were brought inside quickly. Grabbed a drink before start time and had a few moments to look at the theatre's renovations - a really lovely and unique spot. I'll be back! read more

I love this music venue. It is undeniably the best place in the Bay Area to see a show. The theater itself is just beautiful - polished, modern, and elegant. The ambiance is perfect, with deep red curtains draped wall to wall and dimly lit chandeliers suspended from the ceiling. Oh yes, and the sound quality is second-to-none. With a capacity of about 1400, the theater draws well-known musicians from a diversity of genres, while maintaining an intimate setting. There are fantastic local beers on tap, specialty cocktails, and in true Bay Area fashion, even some delicious New American food options. The staff is courteous and professional. I also love that the UC Theatre is a non-profit with programs to teach young adults the music business. This venue is a truly wonderful addition to the Bay Area community. And the GM has a nice butt. read more

Awesome venue with great vibes, good drinks, and lovely souls. Easily accessible from Bart. The hieroglyphics show was amazing. The vibes were high. Sound quality was great. Beer was cold and delicious. Only complaint is there is no coat check. So plan accordingly and don't bring you skate with you. aside from that it's a great venue with lots of potential for mind blowing future shows. Keep it up UC theatre! read more

Two stars for resurrecting what was my favorite movie theater, but my experience with them as a music venue was pretty unsatisfying. Recently, the Dark Star Orchestra came through, and I was determined to see them, this time. My problem, such as it is, is that I'm an old guy, with some arthritis problems that can flare up, sometimes, so I emailed the venue to ask if there was any way I could be assured of a place to sit, if I needed it. I received no response, so I decided to give the show a miss, rather than get caught in a bad situation- but the experience left a bad taste. I understand that, at 82, I don't exactly represent their main audience focus, but simply having my query ignored seemed rude; how long would it have taken for someone to answer? In any case, clearly the place is not for me, or people of my age with any kind of disabilities. I'm a little sad about that, but I get it. I had a lot of great times in that theater, and nothing lasts forever. read more

Lovely remodelled venue (formerly a movie theatre) in downtown Berkeley. Great sound system.Nice that everything is super clean - no sticky floors!! Eclectic mix of music, from Dark Star to hip hop to a talk by a member of the Russian collective Pussy Riot. I'm at a New Year's Show, can't wait for the baloons to fall! read more

Coming here is a treat. Went to They Might be Giants, and just like their music is down to earth, the venue was really down to earth, not so big that the music becomes impersonal, but just big enough to have the energy of all the people enjoying the music. My favorite part was the theater brought in a few people who were translating the songs into sign language! Now that's something I haven't ever seen at a show, and it was fantastic. When the band found out their names to thank them, the whole crowded chanted their names in appreciation. I also love downtown Berkeley, and given the theater is a stone's throw away from a ton of great restaurants and from the BART station, it really is the perfect location to watch a show. read more

This is just what Berkeley needed. Definitely seems like they are working out some early kinks on the systems end of things but the two shows I have gone to have been absolutely stellar experiences. Great Sound, Great Lights In general a fantastic renovation on an treasured Berkeley Landmark. I look forward to coming to shows here for years! read more

Terrible sight lines. Went to a seated performance and was seated on the balcony/level above the orchestra pit. The floor is about eye level with the stage. Since the floor is not raked, you cannot see the stage through the person sitting in front of you. I sat through the performance looking at the back of the head of the person sitting in front of me. What an idiotic design. Unless the venue is hosting someone you really want to see, I'd think twice about seeing a show here. The workers were nice, however. read more

Worst experience EVER. Went to the DMX concert on Easter night. UC Theatre sent out an email the day before that the artist would be on the stage by 9pm sharp. X didn't show up until more than 2 and a half hours later, and ended up playing for 40 minutes on a terrible mic where people could barely hear him. UC Theatre refused to issue refunds, though the parking garages closed at midnight. I was stuck on the streets of Berkeley until the morning. The smart people left in droves around 11pm, well before the show started. PEOPLE NEED TO DEMAND A REFUND! Dispicable. read more

What a beautiful renovation of a space that was once lost in the community! The UC Berkeley Theatre is now an awesome destination venue in the Bay Area. Sure The Greek is amazing for those long summer nights, but UCBT will be fun all year long :) The acoustics are spot on and I really enjoyed the staff who were working. Great space, great people.. I don't relate to the negative reviews on here. 10/10 from me :) read more

Went to a show at the UC Theatre tonight to see Dirtwire and Tinariwen. The staff was fantastic, friendly, professional, helpful. The venue was beautiful, classy, tasteful...like a mix of Yoshi's and the Great American Music Hall. Unfortunately, the sound was awful. The music was so loud and improperly mixed. There was so much rumbling bass and low humming that it washed out all of the other instruments and singing. What is it with the BOOM BOOM BOOM approach to mixing. Louder is not better. Overwhelming bass is not better. I was seated to the right and on the same level as the mixer. Dirtwire was talented but almost unlistenable because of the constant over-driving bass. Tinariwen was lucky because they had less low register instrumentation, so there sound was spared somewhat. Bands: make sure you know what you sound like in all parts of the venue. The sound guy or gal can MAKE or BREAK your show. Hard to recommend a show there if the sound remains that bad. Disappointed that I didn't get to hear either band at their best because of poor sound. read more

Unfortunately this venue was a great disappointment to me and my group. We attend many shows in the Bay from the Fillmore, Fox, the Independent to GAMH and found this venue to have a poor layout for GA show (Psych Furs/ The Church), fair at best acoustics, fairly expensive tickets comparatively speaking in the bay and extremely poor temperature control. During the headliner there were nearly 30 people sitting in the hallway with red faces trying to cool down. During the headliner! We left early it was so uncomfortable. There was also about a 45 min wait between opener and headline which appeared to be an attempt to increase food/drink sales as the typical indications of tech difficulties were not apparent. The location is great (so close to BART) but some definite work needs to be done. I doubt I will buy tickets again for this venue without some improvements. read more

The theatre itself is beautiful, has great sound anywhere in the room, and is just small enough for shows to feel very intimate. I will admit that I have only been here once, but the management was horrible. I was sent an email before the show I attended that detailed everything I needed to bring to pick up my will call ticket (ID & credit card used to buy ticket). Once I got to the venue, I was told that I also needed to bring a copy of the email in order to get my ticket. My phone was at 1% battery and I'm not a human printer, so I asked one of the people who worked there what I should do because the email never said I needed a copy of the purchase email with me at the venue. His response was "well, you're screwed." Thankfully, my friend's phone wasn't dead and I was able to get my email on her phone and go into the theatre. There were two lines, and I was pointed in the direction of the one farther from me. As I walked over there, the same worker that told me I was screwed came up to me and told me I wasn't supposed to be in this line and needed to move to the other line. Whatever fine, I'm getting into the show. Finally, once I was in the venue, I wanted to go buy a beer. I'm 24 and had my ID with me, but because I wasn't stamped at the door (nobody at the door said ANYTHING about a stamp or had one) the bartender refused to serve me. Not a big fan of this theater, especially as a photographer. They make it hard to photograph bands. The stage is so high up it's pretty hard to get great shots of the musicians performing. Location, pretty close to Bart so that's a positive. And the acts they draw are pretty great too. If I had to choose between The UC Theater and The Greek, I'd go with the Greek. It's more of an experience going to a show there. read more

Great addition to the Berkeley live music venue scene! The renovation was very well done and the interior has nice detailing though not so much as to distract from the performance. Despite having a rowdy crowd for the Gogol Bordello show I attended, the GA area was well staffed with security. Drinks were decent with quality options available. Finally, I don't have to schlep over to SF for a high quality music experience. read more

Incredible space in the East Bay on par with classic venues in SF, but more intimate! I saw the Psychedelic Furs here last weekend and had a wonderful time. As others have mentioned, the decor is similar to that of the Fillmore and the Warfield--dark, heavy curtains with ornate trims--works for me! There are three "tiers"/areas. I arrived just in time to catch the beginning of the Furs and was able to snag a spot right up in front in the first tier. To be honest, because it's a smaller space, I think you'd get a great view from anywhere in the venue. I'm not sure what a previous reviewer was talking about regarding seating in the first section--at the Furs it was all general admission, but perhaps that depends on the show. The staff are super friendly, and the drinks were strong enough for my taste. They even hand out posters as you're walking out. All in all a great venue and really really nice to have in the East Bay. I'll be back! read more

This week saw the Zombies perform Odessey & Oracle on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Then went back for Peter Hook and the Light performing New Order Substance for their 1st set; followed by Joy Division Substance for their 2nd set on Friday, April 28, 2017. 2 great shows! Not only a happy 1st anniversary to UC Theatre, but 2 happy evenings of great entertainment for me. About 1.5 blocks from Downtown Berkeley BART; attentive staff; excellent entertainment. One of the premiere places to see live music in the Bay Area. read more

I really want to see this place succeed and hope that someone in their management reads this. I have attended three shows there so far and hope to see many more. I enjoyed all of them but here is my advice. 1) Forget about trying to be a restaurant and focus on the shows. Face the fact that you are in Berkeley surrounded by many great places to eat. You can't compete. Ordered food last night to try it out. Not good. Expensive, hard to get service, slow, very slow, cold, soggy, difficult to eat with no table or lighting. Never again. 2) Keep the lower section table and chair free (at least for music acts). The front row for last nights show was a joke. The poor people there could see only the front of the too high stage. What were you thinking? 3) Train your staff. The bartender did not understand that food could be (or not) ordered there. 4) Forget about, or at least try to manage, a two tiered seat price system. Failure. 5) Take your staff (and MANAGEMENT) on a field trip to the Fillmore to see how a world class music venue works. Do some homework. You have great potential but need some improvement. read more

First, Toots and the Maytals performance Friday night was great. And the staff was prompt and accommodating with my request for ADA seating. Now for the bad. I'm seeing other reviewers say avoid the food at the UC Theatre and they're right, our order took 45 min. longer than promised, quality was so-so, and they ended up just giving us somebody else's order because it was exactly the same, so I hope the other couple got their food. And, I agree with others that the sightlines are awful, and I'm taller than most. But my real concern is: what are the ushers at the UC Theatre for? The two "ushers" in our area were chatting it up with the crowd that just wouldn't shut up, and everyone kept talking louder so they could be heard over the band, and the fake ushers didn't care or do a thing! When I complained about the constant chatter, one actually said "we really don't want to police anybody!" I guess that also goes for people standing on the stairways and using extremely annoying flash on their phones. So, are "ushers" just there for the free tickets, or are they all friends of the management? We've already got tix for a show in June, so we'll see how our experience is then, but that may be our last show at the UC Theatre. I can't totally blame the UC for the increasingly rude audiences and their constant chatter which is ruining shows for us, but I can fault them for doing absolutely nothing about it and even being part of the problem from the two examples I observed that night. read more

The Berkeley Music Group is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was formed to renovate and run The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall in Berkeley. Our mission is to present a vibrant and diverse range of live performances to advance the understanding and appreciation of music, culture and education in the Bay Area. The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall is a music venue serving the community. The centerpiece of the project is to operate a state of the art music venue while educating and training youth, ages 17 to 25, through our arts and concert career pathways educational programs. The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall is a 1,400 capacity, general admission, multi-tiered, all-ages music venue with a state-of-the-art Meyer Leopard sound system and a full service bar and restaurant. This new live music venue presents an exciting range of local and national artists and bands. The UC Theatre is the only general admission music venue of its size and kind in the East Bay.

The staff is friendly; parking is convenient next door in the garage; plenty of restaurants nearby. There were also a few snack items and drinks available for sale. I was bummed that perhaps customer service and management aren't completely in synch with their own policies. I had written and asked if photography would be allowed since this was a Hawaiian show. I wanted to bring in one camera with an attached lens, no flash to take photos for personal use only. I was told that the policy was no photography was allowed. On the night of the show, the last announcement before the show started, was that non-flash photography was welcome. Oh well.

Seats were first come first serve but its such an intimate setting that all seats are great in comparison to football stadium concerts. Bring some form of cushion for your butts! Saw Joy Crookes as the opener and she was great. There are a lot of food and drink options as well as portable restrooms beyond the lawn. Would recommend and come back for other events.

They also sell alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks, beverages, and food. It's just an amazing venue.

Basic stage setup, a good sound system, and large screen to the right (that's also where the restrooms are located). No actual bar, but food and drinks were sold in the back, including canned and bottled beverages and tasty bites like empanadas and pizza. It was quite warm in there, with weak or non-existent AC, just ceiling fans spinning above. Luckily when the sun went down (which is late now due to the recent daylight savings time change), the temperature became tolerable inside. The live storytelling and musical performances were entertaining as usual. The host/producer, Scott, started out the show. From there, the comical readings from the teen diaries and journals of diverse individuals continued on stage for a little over an hour. No live band for this particular program, but one of the performers played us tunes on the guitar, which she created as a youth after heartbreak. I'm a fan of Mortified, and though this venue was not one my faves of those typically used for this event, it was a decent setting for a casual night out this past weekend, filled with laughter, awkward moments, and positive vibes. Also, Ashkenaz is a historic community center and nonprofit that's been around for more than half a century, dedicated to music, dance, and culture, which I appreciate.

I hadn't been there in what seems like forever, and was pleasantly surprised to see such a cool presence of community show up. We recently attended this event and it was so fun. We ordered Cottage Pie, Homemade Chicken Strips with Fries/dipping sauces, and of course a Guinness. They had multi-color balloons to blow up, and two artists came and sang with instruments/passed out music shakers for the kiddos/and story time too. It was such a fun and interactive experience for the whole family to enjoy. Looks like they have programming everyday of the week too! It is high in price but these are super rare trees that need EXPENSIVE permits and the permitting process got lots worse and more limiting this year. The second wave of silver tips never came this year. I usually wait around on the sidelines to get them - these trees grow only at 6,000 feet and some years they get snowed in. Still, today if you want a 11+ foot tall tree that is silver tip - I think this is your only option. There is one more on Park St Alameda and another on Solano Ave in I think Albany - but they all have lower inventory of the tallest and nicest and most expensive. The best it just good enough for me when it comes to Christmas trees. This year it has become a careful chess game with the low inventory, the blizzard situations in the mountains and the new more limiting and expensive permitting process. Yes, I lurk around these tree farms and kick tires and take mental notes about what's going on. And I can guarantee if you have a hotel lobby or a beautiful home with vaulted ceilings and you want the tree to go all the way to the ceiling - this is your best bet.

Their summer fruits (cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, apriums, plouts, plumcots, etc) are phenomenal and in recent years the farm has expanded to include more fall and winter fruits (persimmons, pomegranates, citrus, etc.) They also dry their fruit so that you can still enjoy a peach or nectarine in the fall and winter (the dried persimmons they have in the winter are fantastic!) Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys fresh ripe fruits! Full Disclosure: I worked for Blossom Bluff (the Loewen family rules!) for 5 years and love love love them.

Terrible people working as security. I get with type of jobs it's always the uneducated that get hire and they act like they are god or doing something so important in this world. I'm a fire captain/ part time police officer and my son who is in a wheelchair wanted to see his favorite band The Bronx. I never felt so disrespected and treated like some criminal. After the Bronx set ( this is last night ) my son had an accident so he wears diapers so I wheeled him out to change in the car. No one told us that once you leave I guess pass the small gate filled with smokers you can't go back in. What kind of rule? I get it .. you don't want people drinking and coming back drunk. ..but that wasn't the case. We got stamped but the lady was too busy talking to someone else so we hurried out so I change him and head back to see the other band. As soon as i was done helping my son we head back to the theater and was told by the nastiest and meanest women who talked down to us was like" you two can't come in! What?! Meanwhile there's people drinking there sneaked beer in coats and smoking weed in that terrible small gated area and my son and I were denied to come in. So fucked up. We both were sober. It's like wow. Where's the compassion these days. Fuck that lady with the glasses. Get educated and learn some meditation. Your job isn't that serious and your not doing much to change the world or help people. You ruined my sons self esteem. He already has it tough already. Never coming back. Horrible experience all around. Sound was horrible...horrible! The box office, bartenders, ushers and all of the staff seemed very angry, rude and unprofessional. Whoever renovate the place didn't know what they were doing. You cannot see the stage unless you are 6'6, or if you stand by the railings. I have been here twice and it was pretty much empty on both weekends. Huge waste of space. Why would they book large acts if they can't fill the venue? I was warned by friends to never come to this place. Whoever is running it, is not doing a good job. I can see it not lasting long with all the bad reviews. I will not be coming back. Message to the owner: Hire a new manager who can sell out tickets and new employees that are respectful to your community and patrons. Restructure the floors so people in the back can see on both levels. Add more tables & chairs on the second level. Fix the sound system so people can tolerate the music. Make it comfortable, since its the community that is keeping that place open... with our donations, we all know its not the ticket sales. read more

The UC Theatre is the BEST new venue in the BAY AREA! Yeah for the folks who put this place back on the map. They took an old shut down movie house and turned it into a Fillmore style nightclub in downtown Berkeley. It's close to BART and lots of bus lines, but we drove in from CoCo county and had no problem parking. Lot's of great places to eat nearby, and the club has bar type food snacks if you want to eat at the venue. The room has really great sound and great sight lines, large room but it feels intimate. The people I interacted with (bartenders, box office, woman in the rest room) were all super helpful and polite. I don't know why the other reviewers had issues, because my whole crew thought this place was the bomb. Keep on bringing us good shows UCT, we will be back for more. Rock On! read more

So excited to have a venue of this size and caliber in the East Bay. Any excuse to not cross the Bay is good in my book, tbh. And their calendar is filling up nicely. The ideas behind the venue--their education program, youth advisory board, community programming, etc.--are incredibly community-minded and make sense of the non-profit aspect of this amazing new concert venue. Staff is passionate and professional both on the community and concert sides of things. Very excited to see where this all goes! read more

The best place in the Bay Area to see a concert! Excellent Meyer sound system, great lighting, flexible seating and many vantage points for viewing, reasonably priced drinks and good food. The set up was different for each show I saw there, but always a good time. Great vibe from the friendly staff at the bar, so I don't know what that other reviewer was up to, but I went to 3 different bars and everyone was friendly. Epic education program for youth, funded through their non profit. read more

I WISH I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE A "zero"! Operations from head of security was really unorganized and it was even worst experience from their whole security staff. I've been a long time concertgoer/ previous worker for this establishment but certainly not worth the BS that the workers put you through. Not a great experience, horrible unseasoned crowd. I recommend all the musicians, creatives, and Bay Area in general to try to protect your space & not book with them. Thanks read more

Can't wait to go back to this epic venue. Saw Steel Pulse in May 2018, the vibe was pure magic! The sound and lights were sensational, and it was fun to groove on their huge dance floor. I lost my keys and was assisted by one of the nice staff peeps to find them, thank you! If you are looking for a great place to dance and see good music, head on over to downtown Berkeley to the UC Theatre, you won't be disappointed. read more

For the UC theatre to invite Matisyahu - a racist, pro-genocide performer is an offense to Berkeley's history of fighting for civil and human rights. Free speech is one thing, but to actively call for the annihilation of an entire group of people is beyond horrific. So shocked the theatre allows these types of people on its stage. read more

Awesome staff and security. I used to help out here a few years back and they have really cleaned this place up. Great shows are on the books every week and just an inviting and fun atmosphere. Highly recommend you to check out a show there. read more
