Went here for an early dinner with some friends. Had one of their soups. I wish I could remember the name, but it was a broth based soup with crab meat. It was good, but felt like it was missing something. Really enjoyed their ice cream though. The waitress was also very nice.

Just up the road from the bustling shops of downtown Ephrata sits The Udder Choice, a massive structure home to club sandwiches, cheery servers, high ceilings and a wall of antique ice cream scoops whisking away patrons for a sweet trip down memory lane. It's an upbeat place, full of life and lots of personality. Gives off serious soda shop vibes, like it would make a great set for a modern-day Happy Days The menu is pretty straightforward, with the main categories being soup, sandwiches, and ice cream sundaes. That right there's a strong core, and the primary components of an idyllic lunch. Highly recommended before (or after) heading down Main Street that is the embodiment of the shop small movement.

Absolutely and "udderly" amazing! Our party of 3 all agreed it was worth the 30+ minute drive, and will visit again. Beverages consisted of: Cinnamon Latte (served slightly warm, but still very good, and a generous amount), Coke Float, and a Raspberry Tea. Soups: 1 cup and 1 bowl of Lobster bisque (hot creamy and a sweet buttery flavor), and a cup of Turkey Bowtie Vegetable (delicious and full of turkey and whole vegetables. The turkey chunks were slightly dry but still tasty.) Main dishes: Ruben sandwich (One of the best Rubens I ever had! The bread was delicious and beautifully grilled, ample meat with a perfect balance of cheese, sauerkraut and dressing), Turkey Club, sans tomatoes (again, perfect balance of ingredients with beautifully toasted bread), and a Grilled Ham and Cheese (good and well made). All the sandwiches came with crispy chips and pickles. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! Desserts: Meadow Tea ice cream with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles- a total winner! The favor was impressive and worth another future trip! Guernsey- absolutely incredible with its hot caramel and nutty flavor combination! Wow!! Our waitress was super sweet and attentive, without hovering. She was prompt, polite, and professional. The ambience is laidback and surrounds visitors with a fun and uniquely decorated atmosphere. The noise level is average and space between tables is ample enough for personal and intimate conversations within your private table. The bathrooms were super clean and even carried the theme with wooden stall doors and ice cream scoop handles. The only downside was there were no paper towels to dry your hands. I would recommend stopping by this fun and quirky restaurant/creamery. If you don't stay for some comfort food or desserts, take a pint home. You can even sit outside and enjoy a cone if you would just like to enjoy the rural air on a summer evening. Bonus- if someone you know loves cows, ice cream, or comfort food- this place is a total winner!

Atmosphere: Overall averaged noised, well spaced and lodge-like (comfortable though). Lighting was good and had lots of diverse customers (families, older couples and young couples) Service: Fast and attentive. Waitress was super kind and checked in on us frequently. Took our orders quickly after sitting you pay at the front. Food: Everything was delicious and well portioned (in our opinion). The only reason for a star removal was because we wish they had French fries for a side at the minimum instead of cheap chips but it's the Udder Choice lol I feel like they are more about their ice cream (which we made sure to get). We got two scoops of strawberry ice cream in a dish (which was really a glass mug) and asked for a waffle cone on the side. Super delicious ...their ice cream is never a disappointment! Honestly not a bad place to grab a bite to eat especially for dessert !

I love the Udder Choice. The food is good, the menu extensive and inexpensive, the ice cream options decadent and the decor charming. Normally I enjoy one of the many daily soup options but today my mom and I decided to split a corned beef on rye. The bread was fresh and the corned beef generous. It came with standard potato chips and pickles on the side. We saved room to split a traditional sundae, one ice cream flavor one topping plus whipped cream and a cherry. I neglected to get a photo we dug into it so quickly. My only comment is about their Jigger Sundae. It is based on a long ago concoction from Cox Drug store, but a true Jigger comes from the Jigger Shop in nearby Mount Gretna and there is no comparison between the two. But that was a battle to be fought in many years past when Coxs first tried to usurp the Jigger for its own. On general principles I can't order it here, even if it sounds delicious. Our total bill came to $17, including 2 ice teas. I had to over tip my server because the prices are so low how can they make anything? Love going to eat here and you probably will too.

We stopped in before heading over to the Ephrata Cloister (see separate review on this). We ordered their many sandwich options and, of course, we made sure to save room for dessert. We loved the gyro and the udder hoagie was generous! You can't go wrong with their grilled cheese with BLT and their grilled tuna sandwich. For dessert, the kids ordered their own sundaes (one scoop with one topping + whipped cream and cherry), while my husband ordered hot fudge brownie, while I was thoroughly satisfied with my coffee milkshake. The interior is cavernous and the walls plastered with old ice cream ads and Coca Cola signs. We were there from 12 - 1ish and there was a good-sized lunch crowd. That speaks well for this establishment may be a little bit out of the way.

Can't wait to go back!! I went for breakfast and the selection wasn't huge but enough variety to pick from. Everything was so fresh and high quality. Pricing is great! I need to try their ice cream next time... There is not a lot of tables so you may need to expect a wait. I got there on a Saturday morning at 8:30ish and it was backed but by 9 it was clearing out and slowing down.

So cute and a small town feel! They had a lot of ice cream choices that all sounded amazing! I decided to go with fresh peach, which had real peaches in it. Best ice cream I have had ever I think! Also, it was very cheap. $2.12 for one scoop, which was more than enough for one person! The staff was so friendly and patient while we decided which ice cream we wanted. The place was very clean. We decided to eat outside on the patio in the shade. Perfect summer treat!

A relatively short drive from our house yielded the most eclectic, fantastic place I've ever seen…read more I found this place on Yelp, but did not read any reviews on it, so wasn't sure what to expect. The parking lot was full. The decor out front was mismatched bistro tables and chairs, so I liked it already. One step in the door and I was astounded. Old cabinets, scales, canning jars on one wall, photos and old pressure cookers on another, and no two tables or chairs the same. Coffee and cold drinks are serve yourself. Pick your own cup from an assortment of mismatched cups. Even the menu had little gems hidden in the descriptions. I ordered my usual, my standard for judging a restaurant, chipped beef over potatoes, and my husband ordered a 'meat lovers' eggs Benedict. It was a bit of a wait for the food as there were only 2 people working, but I wasn't bored because there were so many things around the place to look at. One bite of my food and I knew it was a winner. Thick, rich sauce with more meat than I've ever seen in a chipped beef gravy, and onions in the potatoes. Steven's Benny had sausage instead of an English muffin, and meat gravy instead of Bearnaise. He loved his food as well. Becky's is only open weekdays. She said it was too busy on weekends, and she does just fine being open weekdays. I can believe it. When we left, the parking lot was still full. This won't be our Saturday stop, but now Steven's off on Wednesdays, we can make this one a new regular stop.

I stopped by Lettie's with my mom yesterday for a late lunch before heading up to PA to visit…read moreLongwood Gardens. I'd had Lettie's bookmarked for at least six months, and recently saw that they won Best of DE Editor's Choice for fried chicken. In light of my not-so-secret love of Southern/soul food and fried chicken in particular, I knew that I needed to check Lettie's out, esp. after seeing the tantalizing photos on Yelp. Per other Yelpers' advice, I called in my order en route 20 min. ahead of time, which worked out perfectly for us. Upon arrival, I gave them my name for the chicken, and we ordered sides of potato salad and mac and cheese, as well as freshly brewed iced tea to drink (note: they only brew unsweet iced tea). After ordering, we took a seat on the wraparound porch, and they brought the food out to us in less than 5 min. From my first bite into a drumstick, it was clear that this was the best fried chicken I'd ever put in my mouth. The skin was perfectly crisp, with the perfect amount of breading to give it a satisfying crunch, and the meat was tender and oozing with moistness. My mom told me that this chicken was the closest she'd ever had to my great grandmother's fried chicken from Arkansas, and was "real Southern fried chicken." For my part, I can say that it's better than the fried chicken I had at several well-known Southern restaurants in Atlanta, as well as any fried chicken I've had to date in Pittsburgh. As difficult as it is for me to admit, it's even better than my own fried chicken! My only minor criticism is that the breading was a bit salty for my taste--but even so, its texture was so perfect that I can overlook it. As for the sides, both of them were clearly homemade, and were very good. The mac and cheese was made with a sauce that tasted like sharp white cheddar was used, and was on the creamier side of the spectrum. I don't even really like potato salad (I find it very bland), but I tried some and thought it was decent, which is high praise from me. It had small pieces of dill pickle, celery, and hard boiled egg mixed in, giving it some nice flavor and crunch. Needless to say, my mom and I were extremely impressed at the quality of the fried chicken from Lettie's. Although the chicken is technically broasted, since it's cooked in a pressure cooker instead of deep fried, it's difficult to tell that it's not fried--the only difference is that it's slightly less greasy on the outside. My only regret is that I forgot to order dessert, since I would have loved to try the key lime pie and my mom would have liked to try the chocolate cake, both of which I'm certain must be excellent based on the quality of everything else that we tried. If you appreciate good fried chicken and home cooking, Lettie's is a must-try--you certainly won't regret discovering this hidden gem in Hockessin!
