Sometimes it's true that you have to wait a minute for drinks..but the new ownership is great and is elevating The Van Reed to new levels. I don't care about your local bar or pizza shop, if you have not been here and tried their wings, you cannot honestly say that your local place is the best! They do have other food that is good, or so I have been told by my wife and friends, I just always get the wings! This is a small place, mainly used to be known as a biker bar years ago. I use to love this place. I could always go there knowing I would get good food and great service at a reasonable price. Since the change of ownership they have turn the place into a mini casino more than anything else. They must have let go most of their staff, cause you will be there all night waiting for someone to take your order. And the best for last, they jacked their prices up! You get wings, pay extra for blue cheese and ranch, pay extra for celery, and pay extra for sauces that differ from typical flavors. All this and you only get 10 wings now. WOWZA! Some of the absolute best wings I've ever had hands down. They smoke their chicken wings and chicken in other dishes which gives it such a great flavor. Their menu is extensive but offers plenty of variety. We also got the fresh cut fries - YUM! Our server was so nice and super helpful. The drinks and food came out in a timely manner. My buddy and I stopped in on a Monday night. We sat at the bar and the bartender took our drink order right away. I ordered a chicken cheesesteak because the description said it was smoked chicken. I couldn't really taste any smoke but the sandwich was very good. The french fries here are fresh cut and they really were some of the best fries I have had in a very long time. They were so good I didn't even have to put ketchup on them. My buddy got the Chesapeake wings. I thought they were also very good. They're advertised as being smoked also and I could taste a little bit of smokiness in them. Delicious. My buddy got Coney Island hot dogs and he said they were great. I'm not sure if there was another waitress for people who decide to sit at a table. It wasn't very full but then again it was Monday night. I figured 3rd time would be a charm. First time to wanted to try this restaurant they were closed. Second time I tried the kitchen was closed for some reason. I figured today was my lucky day to finally try this place. After sitting at the bar for 5 min we finally asked the bartender if we could order a couple of beers. He mouthed off about being busy and we were free to leave if we didn't like it. Perhaps it would be smarter of the owner to properly staff the restaurant for proper customer service! Was hungry for wings and asked my step son "Where you get good wings". He stated Van Reed Inn. Stated he might of only had "bad" wings from there twice. So, after running around I made my way to this establishment. The road this place sits off of is very busy so be mindful. Had to use the bar entrance (no big deal) and found our way back to where you place take out orders. The two lady's there were very friendly in taking our order and when ready tell me so. The food - ended up getting three different types of burgers for the family and two dozen wings. The burgers - at least mine was slamming. Very tasty and filling. Only complaint would be the bread was a little wet from the burger. Very minor. Not a big fan on the fries -sorry Wings - yes I would get these again. Very large, lots of different flavors to choose from, definitely up with the best wings around if not the best. Last, and again not a show stopper. So we decided to try The Van Reed Inn since we heard good things about the place. WELL that definitely wasn't the case. Pickles were supposed to come with our meals but didn't. My daughter and I ordered cheesesteaks and they forgot the sauce and forgot the onions on mine. We asked for American cheese and they put cheddar cheese on and there was hardly and meat in it. When my husband told her about it all she said was, " I can give you the pickles to go and maybe he's just having a bad day." Uhhhh no he came out from the back laughing having a good ol' time. Ordered online for curbside pick up. Upon arriving I called (like I have done previously to let them know I arrived). Then I am told they don't do curbside pickup any more! I had kids in my car and couldn't go in! Almost cancelled my order because of this. They need to change their web site to show they aren't doing curbside anymore. Received a reply stating they never did curbside pickup. However, I need to state that they did have curbside pickup and if you Google them it even stated curbside pickup was available. They had curbside pickup when customers where not allowed to dine inside and continued the service for quite some time. If they changed their methods of pickup they need to remove the feature from their profile. This is the second business that I have visited that show's curbside pickup then when you arrive they decide they don't want to do it anymore since customer are allowed to be inside. Great way to loose business, advertise and not deliver on it. Oh, BTW, I asked for American Cheese on my cheesesteaks not cheddar like was applied. Not sure if I will be back or not. read more

After a day of hiking at Hawk Mountain and a quick stop at Yuengling, my husband and I wanted to grab some dinner before we got on the highway. The Van Reed Inn was close to the highway entrance and I think the website said casual, so we decided to try it. We are SO GLAD we did! We were seated right away and our server was friendly and quick to take our drink orders. We decided to split a garden salad. We expected some iceberg and a few veggies. What we got was a large delicious assortment of greens and colorful veggies. Even the croutons were delicious and I'm not a crouton fan. Impressive salad. Could our entrees be as good? YES! I chose the French Dip sandwich. When it arrived, my husband thought it was strange that the beef was so thick...but that's because it was brisket and it was DELICIOUS! Days later I am still thinking about it. And I think it would be worth a drive back there because it was that good. This will be a short review, as I can't even speak for the food...because we never even got there. My wife and I sat down at the bar on a Saturday afternoon. After the bartender got done chatting for 5 minutes with another patron who already had a drink in front of her, she mosied her way down to us, and with a most unfriendly voice and a look of utter disdain on her face she muttered "whataya havin'?". We asked for a couple of sodas and menus as we were quite hungry. We looked at them briefly, had our choices in mind and closed our menus eagerly waiting to place our food order. She then walked right past us to go to a party of 8, who came in AFTER us, and weren't even all at their table, and starts taking their food order before ours!!! At that point, I threw down a couple of dollars and we made for the exit. Absolutely horrible customer service! We will never go there again. read more

Great food, Great service. After a crappy day at the office, I asked one of the locals where is a good place for wings. I was told Van Reed Inn. Ok, I will give it a try on the way back to hotel. I was out of town, as usual. I was promptly greeted by Val when I arrived. She made me a wonderful bourbon and coke. Even came back to ask how my drink was. Finally a good part of my day was happening. Val gave me a menu, gave me some time to select some items from the menu. Val told me she was going to check out, and Sheila would be taking care of me for the rest of the evening. The food items were promptly brought to me. The wings were very good, smoked and then deep fried. Sheila's service and drinks were just as good as Val's. Both were friendly and professional. I will be going back if I come back to the area. I recommend having Shelia or Val as your bartender. Very nice establishment. I travel for my work. I sometimes eat out 18 times a week, 42 weeks a year, for over 33 years. That is 403 months. I know good service and bad service. This place had great service. read more

This past Saturday, we dined at the Van Reed Inn, which is only a mile from my home. We previously enjoyed good food and service. We sat at a table and the waitress came over in a timely manner. She took our drink order and brought us menus. Then, we waited for over 20 minutes for our drinks. My friend, who is a bartender went to the bar and asked where our drinks were. The female bartender, was too busy talking to a male employee behind the bar, never made our simple drinks. So finally, the waitress went to the bar, got the drinks and served them to us. Meanwhile, three other people came in and sat at the table next to us and it took over 20 minutes for their drink order to arrive. The waitress took our order and the food was excellent except my dates mac&cheese was lukewarm at best. The rest of the meal was good but, the bar service, not so much. I would give the food 4 stars. The waitress, 3 stars and the bar service 1 star. After all, she showed up for her shift. Also, the place was not busy when we arrived. Watch you bank account! Was at the Van Reed Inn on 11/17 and the bartender was not pleasant at all. Then to top it all off, she charged my credit card 3 times. Once was my actual tab, the other one was a duplicate charge for my tab and then at VERY LARGE tab that was not even mine. To this day, 11/22 - that money still has not been returned. When I called the establishment, I made it clear I would not revisit them. BUT she still did nothing to offer any assistance with my loss. For me to wait this long for a return that THEY MESSED up is not right. I equally blame my bank for holding this return up, but it should never have happened to begin with. I had the pleasure of running across this place on my way traveling home from a business trip in Philadelphia returning to Pittsburgh. From the outside, you wouldn't think much because it is an older building on a busy street. The lot is spacious and the owners have obviously done a fantastic job maintaining the exterior. It even appears they added outdoor seating and speakers when the weather is a bit warmer. But, the inside is completely modernized and remodeled. I'm glad that the large marquee outside caught my eye because the food was unbelievably good. You will often hear bars, restaurants, or their patrons state their favorite joint has the best wings around. Often it is because they boast a million different, unique sauces or they are cheap. I travel approximately 6-7 months out of the year to varying parts of the country for business and I can honestly say this place is in the top 3 "wingeries" I have ever eaten. Unique, flavorful sauces? Check. Fair price for the quality? Check. The best part? The wings are smoked and then flash fried to come out extra crispy. Fall off the bone tender, juicy, and delicious? Triple check. I'm not kidding--run to this place specifically for the wings as they are THAT good. Our table ordered a dozen wings (two flavors) and I had the brisket tacos. The brisket was smoked, as well, and just as moist and tender as you could imagine. The shell was perfect with a great, (assuming) homemade sauce lightly coating the meat, black beans, and spring mix. This place is honestly a diamond in the rough. I challenge anyone to go here, try the wings, and tell me you're not in love. Any trip through Eastern PA will now include a lunch or dinner stop at the Van Reed Inn. read more

i was there on 10/13/16 with my wife and daughter. First thing we noticed was how loud it was in the building. The music was too loud, and there were people at the bar, who appeared to be very intoxicated. they were very loud, cursing, singing so that the entire place could hear them. on the positive side, our server was nice, and the food was good. But, due to the atmosphere, it would have to change before i come back again. i would recommend if you have young children, this is not a family dinner kind of place. read more

Just moved to the area and stopped in before to grab sixers to go (which they have a fair selection of micros and the typical popular brands). We decided to try lunch there this weekend. Our server/bartender was super friendly and attentive. The decor was casual and clean and looked like it had been updated. The atmosphere included several large tvs, blues, soul and classic rock music playing, pool table, nice selection on tap and by the bottle. We got the Parmesan peppercorn wings to start and they were really nicely seasoned and were cooked perfectly. The fish tacos were good but my husband said he wouldn't order them again. I got the Brisket Reuben and it knocked my socks off! They do their own brisket and it was fantastic! Their fresh cut fries were reminiscent of those on the boardwalk.
