Came here in search of a great music experience and we were not disappointed. The sound quality really is as great as advertised. Grammy nominated Christian Sands trio played a great show that night. We already knew we needed tickets because seating is very limited. Thankfully we read the reviews about the food and dined out prior to the show. We would come back but will never try the food. It doesn't look appealing and the prices don't match the paper plates you get it on. We also did not and will not drink here. I was cold so I did order a tea, so $4 for a cup of hot water and a tea bag along with an entire bottle of Publix brand honey. Next time I'll remember a sweater because no. $4 isn't a lot of money but it is for some water in a bathroom cup. I didn't have much hope for the alcoholic beverages after the tea so I left it alone. Not getting an over priced drink that doesn't at least taste good! So.. highly recommend for the music and experience. Just eat out beforehand and come already hydrated! read more

Fist time visiting last night. Very lovely evening and the performance was beautiful. The best acoustics I've ever heard as long as I've been going to live music concerts. The setting was much smaller than I expected so I'd describe it as intimate. At times during the performance it really did feel like I was sitting in someone's living. Very professional and attentive servers. Nice, clean bathrooms too. Can't speak on the food for this visit because the hubby and I weren't hungry. However, I will say the fact that I did not hear a single utensil clanging on a plate while people ate around me was beyond impressive. The owner was personable and quite funny too. The only thing I would like to see is perhaps an homage to the jazz greats on the walls but that's the inner interior designer in me lol. Great date night!! My husband and I decided to try this local jazz club on a random Thursday night and we can only sing their praises! Great food and drinks with some amazing artists. First off, let me just say I will go back here. But that's said with reservations as I had a train wreck of an experience. I love live music too much not to and you get the purist, most intimate sound that you'll find anywhere. So kudos to the establishment for pulling that off. I went with a group of six. Mistake. There's no way to accommodate a group of six. If you come in 4 and 8's you can pull off being only with your group, otherwise it looked like people were sharing tables with strangers. I hate that. I happened upon VIP because I think our group size was being accommodated. I know what you're thinking- special service!- stop thinking it. Every body else in the joint had their drinks and food orders in and our group was NOT being attended to. 10 minutes roll by... No one. I get up and go to the bartender and asked if he could help get someone to make their way to the front seats at the stage. All I needed was an "okay" but I got, not a smart azz but somewhat sassy, "There's really only two of us and we're making our way up there" speech. Okay fine. Someone swooped by five minutes later and dropped off menus,..he never came back. 20 MINUTES LATER...the same bartender comes by, bends down and asks, have you all been helped? Six people sitting there with not a single drink, 30 minutes after the concert started, every one else in the joint on their second drinks, eating food, just living it up and we have nothing. He did do 2 apologetic pats on my shoulder though before he took our order. Luckily the wife and I had eaten and drank before we came. Didn't know about the rest of the party though. We had decided on the desserts and wine we were going to drink but I couldn't do it. I was being a baby but didn't want to give them my money after the service fail and didn't want to have the debate with myself about the tip. So I didn't order anything. The wife got wine and was disappointed and only drank half. The next time we saw service was at the end of the performance when the bill was dropped off. I really couldn't care less about decor. I just need a place to sit, good music, good service, and good wine. I got a place to sit and good music. And it looks like everyone else got...serviced. Judgement withheld on the quality. The originators of the Velvet Note have transformed a space in a strip mall into an intimate listening room with incredible acoustics. In fact, it is not much bigger than a Subway, so the audience experience with the artist is a singular one. The community is enriched by the fact that the owners were willing to take a chance on a serious live music venue. Bravo for that! This venue provides a rich experience but I am afraid it does not quite live up to the expectations that are created by the staff. You don't have to tell me if something glitters and please trust me to discern for myself if there is anything beneath the shine. Probably due to space limitations, the menu is limited. Makes total sense. However, touting a "Cordon Bleu trained" chef does not give one license to charge $18 for Crab Cakes that, although large, were well over seasoned with dill. We also tried the fondue which was thin, lukewarm, and lacked flavor. The bourbon and beer lists are limited but contained interesting choices. They need people to spend lots of money on food and beverage. God knows that we are happy to do that but you have to give us something good! You do not want people to "catch a bite before the show" somewhere else! I did not mind the plastic plates and hardware in consideration of noise and space issues; after all, the plates are black which is the classiest color for plastic dinner service. On the other hand, I was not crazy about the skirting over the chairs because it restricts you from putting your feet underneath (a habit that I did not know I had until I visited the Velvet Note) and gives the feel of a wedding reception rather than a "living room". The light show in the ceiling was interesting but also didn't seem to fit the "living room" motif. Also, the wall lights above my table were way too bright. And, speaking of random complaints, that clunky notebook POS (P is for "point" not "piece") credit card machine where tipping is a matter of multiple choice is awkward. The acoustic sound stage "designed by a protegee of George Lucas" (made me look up the spelling of "protegee"), is actually perfect in this space. But there was a problem the night we were there that was quite irritating. We were told that the acoustics were designed to provide the best in "enhanced sound", meaning that there is no house sound system. However, the guitars and bass were electric and the vocals were miked. My assumption is that the performers did their own sound. The night we were there, no one officially seemed to notice the slight distortion in the vocals at high volume levels.. Even if the Velvet Note was not responsible for the band's soundboard, someone should have been paying enough attention to the performance to give the group a heads up to fix that. That said, this is a great venue and we hold those who bring us live music in the highest regard. Despite having room for improvement on a few things, we are optimistic and look forward to returning. Since moving to Georgia, I have had, it's sad to say, very few incredibly memorable and noteworthy nights. It's been mostly good at the best and typically mediocre. That is, until recently. You see, I have just reunited with a good friend, a reliable website called Goldstar. Thankfully since this reconnection, I have been introduced to some fantastic low budget plays and musicals in and around Atlanta. Thanks to Goldstar, I also have discovered the great music scene that is so close by. I found out about The Velvet Note, which otherwise I would have never found on my own, thanks to a posting on Goldstar. The Velvet Note is this little musical oasis in smack dab the middle of suburban Alpharetta. It's off of Old Milton Parkway, and could easily be missed with the cookie cutter chain businesses that you will pass on the main road. However it's anything but. The second you step foot inside you are transported to this intimate lounge space with tables placed close together and a stage that is low and just feet away from you. I read on the venue's website that the space was designed by musicians. After getting a chance to watch a live show there a few days ago, I can totally see that. The acoustics are incredible. So last Thursday for the insanely pocket friendly price of $6 (through Goldstar!) I had one of THE best nights in Georgia. A friend and I went to the Velvet Note to check out their Open Mic Jazz Session. I like jazz and had a feeling I was going to have a good time but I was not prepared for being blown away. The sheer talent we witnessed was overwhelming. Watching the musicians was like watching poetry transformed into a beautiful piece of dance. The range of jazz that we heard too was phenomenal. Some numbers were strictly instrumental while a few had the old school style of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Since it was open mic there were a few other types of music that also took the stage, from Blues to Opera. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING we heard, was outstanding. The Velvet Note is not just an incredible place to listen to amazing talent, but you can enjoy the music over a nice dinner too! They have a full menu and a full bar! The place is so serious about the music (and I am telling you it's a GOOD thing!) that they serve the food on plastic plates and bring out plastic utensils so to not overshadow the music you're listening to. My friend and I had a delicious chocolate mousse cake and it was so much better while eating it to some of the best local music I've ever heard. The Velvet Note is a true gem of a business and I can't express enough what you're missing if you like music and have not been to this place. Hop in your car and hit the gas! Seriously! read more

I can't honestly fully review this place because we didn't stay. We planned to attend a jazz show as a double date. My friend and I purchased tickets online. Unfortunately, their website isn't very user friendly and my friend accidentally purchased one ticket instead of two. When we arrived, we were told that we only had 3 tickets and not 4. We immediately tried I pay for our fourth ticket, but instead of being pleasant and focusing on customer service, we were told that it was a completely sold out show and given a lot of attitude, as if we had committed a crime for making a mistake. I was shocked and innocently asked, "If you can't seat us all, can we get a refund?" Things deteriorated from there and she ended up giving us our money back in cash from the bar. I was shocked and felt like we got kicked out for making a simple mistake. I'm disappointed because I was looking for a good music venue out in the burbs. I also feel for the musician who missed out on possibly gaining 4 new fans! I hope that our experience was an anomaly and that customers aren't routinely treated with malice and disrespect. read more

I purchased 2 tickets to see Frank McComb on Saturday March 16th for 20.00 each which I thought was a good deal but I will have to say I wish I had of chose a different venue to see him perform. I did not like this place at all. First off when we arrived there were several empty tables we could have sat at but was told where to sit and that really pissed me and my husband off. They were seating people from the back of the room who got there early and the late comers were seated towards the front. Totally backwards! I could even tell Frank McComb was not feeling this place either but he went on to perform a good set and once it was over I could not wait to leave. Thumbs down. read more

Don't let the strip mall location put you off - this is one cool jazz spot. We ventured out on a recent Sunday evening (like last night) to hear some great jazz from Joe Gransden and Kenny Banks. The music was terrific and the venue was a nice surprise. Located in a strip mall on Milton Parkway?, you walk into a place modeled on the Blue Note, only with even better accoustics, thanks to a 43' ceiling above the stage. The food wasn't special - avoid the pasta dishes and the Caesar salad is not "authentic" as claimed (ask them to go easy on the dressing) - but the crab cakes and key lime pie were truly delicious, and the drinks mostly reasonably priced. The service was quite attentive and the Mistress of Ceremonies is clearly a warm-hearted lover of coool jazz. Check it out - worth the drive. We'll go again. read more

I finally had the chance to return, and what a night to return. My wife and I went to see "An evening of Elton John with Ted Howe." Ted was accompanied by the great Jerry Fields on drums and Chris Riggenbach on bass. It was sublime; as good as it gets as far as a professional trio. Mr. Howe hears the complexity and musical genius of Elton John, and it translates remarkably well to a jazz idiom. If Mr. Howe and his great trio play again, I strongly urge you to attend. Ted Howe is a magnificent pianist and his shows should be widely and robustly attended; in a just world, it should all but be impossible to get a ticket to see him play, and doubly so when he is with this splendid trio. (BTW, if you want to hear a drummer who is the complete percussionist, and someone who clearly loves what he does, you must check out Jerry Fields sometime. If he doesn't have you leaning on the edge of your seat, about one drink away from making a public spectacle of yourself, dancing in the aisles, then you're probably past saving.) The room at the Velvet note helps make this possible. You will not hear a better sound-stage in Atlanta, or much of anyplace else for that matter. You must go to hear how good this room sounds. Lots of little upgrades since we first came, lighting artwork, better seating patterns, nice entryway, etc. A very warm and pleasant space. The food was good, portions a bit small on the meat/cheese assortment; definitely not a big guy platter. Service was sharp, attentive, friendly, and on their game. Both servers and the bartender worked as a team and covered the room well. The establishment now offers beer and wine. Wine with music, music with wine, wine with music. Reds were priced a bit high for the selections, but the choices were interesting and the Petite Syrah I had was quite good. Price was fair though for a music nightclub. Chairs still hurt, but I'm fat, so it's hard to say exactly who is actually responsible, the chair or my big ass. I'll sit in the fat people club chairs up front from now on. I get the plastic plates idea now, regular cutlery on porcelain plates makes a LOT of noise, it does, and listening to a performer over the clink and clank of dinner plates is not helpful to a perfect and intimate sound. Wine glasses are glass, but make no noise. Tamera is a great hostess (and owner) and she has had a string of sold out shows--justifiably, from what I heard last Saturday night. Congratulations Atlanta, you've been supporting jazz, even if it is dressed up with Elton John to lure you in. Keep up the good work; I think you're already out in front of LA for jazz club attendance. Our goal: Atlanta: the new home of jazz in the USA. Went to my first show here and was very impressed! It's not a place to go for a gourmet meal, but the jazz was superb, the atmosphere welcoming, the drinks very tasty and I even had a decent cup of coffee. There's been plenty written about the Velvet Note I won't repeat but certainly agree this is a gem of a spot, and please don't be put off by it's location. Philip and I will be going here often, which is probably about as high of a recommendation as I could give. read more

I was invited to the Velvet Note on February 15th to see the amazing Monica Spears. It was our first time there and it was impressive. It's a small, intimate space with about a dozen tables. It's run by Tamara Fuller, who greeted us at the door and we got seated. The place was set up by a protegee' of George Lucas to be acoustically sound. High ceiling and a good look. I like how Tamara focuses on both music and food. To the point of actually serving all food on plastic plates and knives and forks. This is so that you can focus on the music without clinking of silverware on plates. A good idea. So the menu was really nice, but not extensive. That didn't bother me beacuse I knew I wanted the crab cakes. I ordered them and they were really good. Good lump crab meat and not too much bread crumb. Served with red onion and arugla. Melissa got the beef tenderloin. Cooked medium rare with red potatoes and a garnish of green onion. Served with a mushroom demi-glace. .... and man, was it good. I got couple of bites. I always enjoy seeing Monica sing. She has a good grasp on the Great American Songbook, which I never tire of. Plus a few selections that the group has done some re-arranging on. All of the songs were good. I admit to shamelessly promoting Monica because she's my friend, but also because she sat at our table and flirted, which is always appreciated. read more

I'm currently teaching piano lessons in the area and chose to hold my recital at The Velvet Note back in December. It was the best choice I could have made for my students! They and their families were thrilled to perform in a "club" space, and the staff made sure that everything went off without a hitch. The piano sounds great in this space and I can see how concerts here could be popular. While I opted not to have alcohol at my event, I do know they have a fairly decent collection, and definitely some good wine! (This frazzled teacher needed a glass once everyone else had left.) read more

Went to a show on Oct 25th. I Researched the venues COVID rules, since I am immune compromised and learned through their website that they were limiting the seating to 16 people (50% capacity) so we decided to go. Got there about 20 minutes before the band went on, everyone was wearing their masks until they were seated, but since every other table was empty this was fine. We passed on the bottled water (no trap water was offered, but no biggie). We ordered wine and a charcuterie board (both delicious) and then the show began. Then more people filtered in until there were at least 10 more people, so now that 6' distance was gone and what is already a small space is fully occupied, only a few people are wearing masks (because they are eating and/or drinking) and I no longer feel safe. My t asked the waitress why there were more than the posted amount of people and she said "the band is really popular". The owner came over a little while later and said "I was told you were not happy" and I explained why, and she said "well if you decide you want to leave I will refund your money", which we did, and she did. BUT we drove from Smyrna (where my brother lives) now had blown the nights plans. My feelings on this are, if you own a business you have the right to conduct it any way you wish, if you want to pack fifty people in there go for it. But don't say 16 and then not stick to that number, because we as patrons should get accurate information to make our own choices according to our health and comfort levels. read more

Great music venue, just a tad tight. Most jazz venues are on the smaller side, so I'm use to it, but if its something that bothers you, just know that going in. It still has a great ambiance. They designed the ceiling pretty cool making it look like the night sky. The staff was prompt and friendly. I only had a drink and it was bigger and stronger than I thought it would be. So that's a plus. I also like that they give you a water bottle with a glass of ice so you are pretty much set for the performance and they don't have to walk around refilling your water and interrupting the show. Definitely coming back to hear some amazing music. read more

Smooth jazz in Alpharetta? How cool is that. My buddy, Harry, bought me a ticket to see Robert Glasper, a Grammy winning jazz pianist and composer. Along with Damion Reid on drums and a monster stand up bass player, they proceeded to thrill an intimate crowd of 40 lucky people who got tickets. Harry and I were blown away. The acoustics are wonderful in this tiny venue and as a side note, the crab cakes looked really good (although I didn't get a taste), but I was there for the music. Check this place out. Some of the old school jazz greats are booked here in the coming months. I hope the OTP crowd appreciates and supports this fine establishment. read more

This place is really, really adorable. Although on the smaller side of things, the ambiance gave a romantic and intimate vibe. I noticed that the seating arrangement was four per table, so if you are in a group of 2, be prepared to sit with another pair at your table. Luckily for me and my boyfriend, we chose to sit on the side near a small (side?) table so we didn't share our area with anyone. I think service was a bit spotty. They were really attentive at first, then kind of drifted away near the middle/end. We used our half off depot gift certificate which gave us two desserts on the house, and they nearly ran out of the dessert. We only got one piece but they made up for it by taking care of an item on our check. The band that played that night was the Dara Tucker Band. The music was uhhhh-mazing. Amazing sound. Truly. Beautifully designed acoustics. There wasn't any dress code. However, I believe great music and drinks in a cozy atmosphere call for a bit more sophistication. I would appreciate a place in Johns Creek that would require a dress code and enforce it. The particular artist that we saw was wonderful. The artist lineup seems to be diverse and sure to appeal to the taste of any music lover. The drinks could be a little stronger. I visited The Velvet Note on Saturday 8/15/20 to see Terminus Falls band, which totally rocked! I had never heard them before and discovered that I love this band. The sound quality is top quality in that venue and the intimacy between the musicians and the audience is unique and very enjoyable. This place also has the BEST FOOD and is now my FAVORITE place to eat with wonderful choices for those on diet restrictions. I had the Crispy Skin Salmon (gluten free) which is Wild-caught Keta salmon, pan-seared with the skin on, and served with creamy multi-colored cauliflower gratin, AND...I ate every bite! The salmon was crispy on outside, tender-fresh-juicy on inside. The veggies were perfectly cooked (not soggy and not crunchy). The food is fresh and is prepared by a chef who cares about quality and perfectly balanced flavor profiles!! Tamara is a brilliant chef among her other many talents!! The service there is friendly as well. I'm already craving the food and entertainment again and can't wait to go back...the best way to unplug!! read more

The musicians are front and center and every seat has a good view and excellent sound quality so you can truly experience the music. A place that is more of a "listening room" - if you want a small concert setting with wine, beer, appetizers, or light dinner - this is the place for you. The musicians are of very high quality and every time has been a very different experience. This is a place where you can talk to the musicians after, meet them, ask questions, and really learn something new. I keep going back because it inspires me and makes me more creative at my daily grind. I've been here a couple times and will be back for more. They have a great staff and the food is awesome but more importantly the Music is always awesome. When you get there the outside is a bit underwelming but once you go in and start to listen its amazing. Every show I have been to is sold out so the seating is close to the musicians and unless you come with a group of 4 you will probably be seated with other couple but that sort of fun. read more

We found The Velvet Note thanks to Groupon, and I sure am glad we did. As long-time fans of live jazz, my wife and I have been to venues large and small; everything from Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York to the Jazz Corner in Hilton Head. The Velvet Note is a strong addition to the small jazz venue list. The location is surprising, given that it's in a nondescript strip mall. But once you walk in, prepare to be amazed. For its size, the Velvet Note is remarkable. It feels intimate rather than small; the sound fills the room rather than feeling too-loud and clunky. And frankly, the intimate setting is awesome for jazz. Making a reservation in advance was simple, and we were pleasantly accommodated for a Sunday night since the Groupon was for a Wednesday night show and the venue has suspended Wednesday performances. Upon arrival we were given our choice of seats (we chose the last table in the back) and seated. Within a minute or so, we were greeted by the waiter who took our appetizer and drink orders. The deal we had was for admission and an appetizer. We chose the meat and cheese plate. It was smallish, but it sufficed just fine. We weren't there for the food anyway. The talent was top-notch; the service was terrific; and the staff were all friendly. Although we didn't dine or drink any alcohol, the limited menu was diverse enough to accommodate us if we chose to order something. We definitely will be back. I can't recommend the space more for those interested in catching a live jazz show. The Velvet Note is a gem in the northern suburbs. read more

I went to this place last night to check out the Thursday Jam session and I'm glad that I went to this local gem. The place is very cozy. I got there around 7:30 pm and was still able to get a great seat. I ordered the salmon and rice with thai curry sauce, a glass of wine, and a glass of peach tea. I am not a fan of the dish. My salmon was too salty for me. The vegetables were a little on the dry side. But, the curry sauce was really good. The saltiness from the salmon seasoning kind of killed it for me. I recommend eating somewhere else, but do order a glass of wine or other alcoholic drinks and enjoy and/or perform at this jazz club. I actually am surprised with the number of people from other states that were there to jam at this club. I'm giving this a 4-star because I had a great time watching people jamming and I want people to come and enjoy the music too. I only left off 1 star from the rating since I feel that the food can be better especially for the amount they are charging for it. read more

I attended another great show at The Velvet Note on Friday, Sept. 20. Singer Dionne Farris performed! Watching Ms. Farris and the quartet of musicians affirmed once again that the shows there are a phenomenal experience for me. I always have an epiphany as I witness each musician jam on their instrument and simultaneously reach a sacred musical space within themselves. Any regular patron of The Velvet Note is familiar with the name Ray Howard and his bands Motown Review and Earth, Wind and Fire tribute...always sold out. The gracious owner (Tamara Fuller) decided to reach into the band and pull out a husband and wife team to present a special show of their love songs to each other. This past Saturday night Ray and his wife BJ showed the patrons of the 2 sold out shows what love is...a truly heartfelt presentation. They both had a mastery of the human voice that put the audience at ease so we could enjoy the warmth of their love. Visited from out of state. The Velvet Note was the answer for "I wonder if there is a good place we can get a bite to eat and hear some good jazz?" I recommend it for a special night out or to do something a little special on a trip. The food was good, the acoustics were great. We appreciated the plasticware, understanding the music is respected and clanking dinnerware could take from that. We were looking for some good jazz, and although it was good music, it wasn't the jazz we were hoping for. Still, it was professional and a good set. Overall, we loved the whole experience. It will definitely be a place we will visit each time we are in the Atlanta area. read more

There has been such good word of mouth about this place among my friends that I had to come check it out tonight. I'm glad I did! From the outside, it just looks like any other storefront in a quiet strip mall in the Atlanta suburbs. Once you go inside, you feel like you're transported to a New York City jazz club. It's a small, intimate space with great acoustics and a decent drink menu. I came to see the Emmet Cohen Trio and they are world-class. They put on a great show! I'm looking forward to seeing future shows at this place. I would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet night out with some great live jazz music. read more
