We stopped in for lunch and enjoyed it immensely. We had been on the road and didn't want anything heavy, so we stuck to the lighter fare. I ordered a Bloody Mary and found that it was accompanied by a sidecar of blueberry beer that was great. My wife found whitefish bites on the "shareables" and paired them with a French Onion soup. I had a Caesar salad and the soup as well. The whitefish bits were wonderful, as well as the tartar with dill that accompanied it. My salad was good; however, I was disappointed that no anchovies were available. The soup could have graced the cover of a cooking magazine; however, the broth itself was somewhat bland. The best thing about our visit was our server. She was efficient, helpful, and had a smile that lit up the room. In all, we had a wonderful lunch. read more

We went on Friday night, but we didn't have a reservation so couldn't get in. Saturday we called and called, but no one picked up the phone until late afternoon and by that time the only reservation was 6:30pm. So we took it. We got there and waited 15 minutes for the table which was almost behind the bar. We sat there another 15 minutes with the server telling us twice she'd be right there- like it was an inconvenience. So my husband went to the bar to order drinks while we waited for the server. She refused to serve us and the barstools weren't even full!!! WTH???? We got up to walk out and the waitress yelled hey sorry we're busy- ok? I said we just wanted drinks while we waited- and she said well the bartender is busy too. Wow. Overrated place for sure, and we found many other great places to eat in Marquette where the staff was not rude. read more

The Vierling never disappoints and is where we take people when they come to visit us in town. A fair amount of the salad dressings are made in house and to die for. I'm a sucker for a good salad. The whitefish is locally caught. The fish fry is delectable but really the fish anyway is delicious. They have a good variety of drink options and their blueberry cosmo is really tasty, I ask for it less sweet than the original recipe and they always deliver. The French onion soup is the best in town and the whitefish chowder is right behind that. Our service has always been great, regardless of how busy they are. If the kitchen is running behind, the servers are honest and up front about it and I sincerely appreciate that. The history of the place is super cool and the view of the oredock (if seated in the back half of the restaurant) makes for a great view. read more

I'm ALWAYS intrigued by restaurants that have been around for decades because simply put, they must be good since they stay around for that long. I mean people must have loved them quite a lot, right? This place is restored and re-opened in 1985, which means it's been around for almost 40 decades (at the time of writing), but actually, its history stretched further back. They tell their history on the front of the menu. Anyway, let's get into it. The interior of the restaurant itself is very nice. Almost have a fancy feel to it, but I love how it's still considered casual dining. The ambiance is relaxed and if you get to sit at the back, you have quite a nice view of the lake. Their menu heavily consists of white fish. Being an avid seafood lover, for me, it's just another reason to love. Instead of going for the dinner menu, instead, I decided to have whitefish chowder and the appetizer menu for a meal, which is the smoked whitefish. It is served with apple, crackers, dill toast, and cream cheese. It's like having a very fun snack plate as a meal. You can create various different flavor and texture combinations for each bite and my inner child really had fun. The whitefish chowder is delicious too! Warm, creamy, savory, and comforting. The whitefish dinner came in huge portions with vegetables and one side. My friend had hers Scampi Style--onion, bell pepper, garlic butter, and white wine. I didn't try it myself but they certainly looked delicious and my friend enjoyed it. The price is reasonable and the service is good. I would recommend this place for a nice dinner to anyone visiting Marquette. If you like beer, they also have some brewery selections, which I personally did not try, but just giving a shoutout in case anyone is interested. read more

I gave this place 5 stars. I loved the casualty of the place. The decor is antiqued with many interesting items arranged around on the walls. Our waitress was prompt and very friendly. Our food was delicious. We had the parmesan encrusted whitefish and chose wild rice as our choice of side and with the green beans. The prices are reasonable. Although it was relatively busy, the noise level was not overwhelming. You could have a nice conversation with no worries about being drowned out by loud music or other conversations. I will definitely be returning here. It is on my list of restaurants to visit when l come to Marquette. read more

3.5 stars would be my official review. But I decided to be generous vs round down. The food was decent and the service was good. It wasn't one of my favorite meals of the trip but it was "fine." I had the whitefish, as did my husband. The baked potato wasn't very good that accompanied it. My daughter likes her Hawaiian pizza. The kitchen was backed up and slow but the server let us know that maybe 10 minutes after we ordered. I was thankful that she communicated. read more

Here is another case where I wish Yelp would allow a half-star. I'd prefer a 4.5 over the 4 star review I provided. The menu offers a wide range of prices and wide variety of menu choices. We ate with a large group and everyone found something to their liking. The service was good and the atmosphere was conducive to conversation among our dinner partners. I'd describe the restaurant decor as eclectic. My solid advice is to get a cup or bowl of the whitefish chowder. It was simply amazing and worthy of the upcharge. I had a full rack of the pork ribs. Fantastic; fall off the bone, goodness. Saucy with a little Cajun kick. The portion was huge. They were about $21 and came with a choice of potato. Everyone in my dining group were satisfied with their meal. The restaurant offers a good variety of beers and a full bar. Dress for the restaurant ranges from casual to dress clothes. I'd call the atmosphere appropriate for older kids. I'll try this restaurant again in the future. read more

Rack of ribs were fall-off-the-bone good. The sauce is ok, but slathered on so I needed four napkins and three wipes while eating. And I'm not that sloppy. My wife had the whitefish piccata which was dry. We've been regulars here for years and have usually found the food was good. Today it is merely acceptable. And when will they ever get rid of the canned or just thawed out green beans! But, this time when I asked our very friendly server for something to substitute, she offered a second baked potato, which I had already had one coming, so I guess this is the new policy? Take advantage of it so the owners will finally get the message and eliminate the always "seasonal" green beans. We had our must-make reservation, and waited about five minutes before being greeted, then seated. The atmosphere is always great with lots of historical paintings and sundry items around. Absolutely charming place in Upper Peninsula, MI. Classic wooden decor from late 1800s and a well maintained historical building with view of lake. Their white fish is fresh and cooked in variety of ways. This white fish is slightly different from rest of the places; it's more fishy. We tried smoked fish, white fish chowder and Piccata. Their smoked fish starter was an absolute blast. Fish chowder wasn't as impressive as chowders I have tried in east coast but still tasty. Piccata was the highlight of our dinner. Slightly crusty, tangy and flavorful. We had a wonderful experience. They also have in-house brewery with wonderful slightly sour and fruity beers. read more

We stopped in to catch up on a 40-year anniversary that we had to delay one day due to weather. We planned to visit the Pictured Rocks National Park and wanted a place to get a good meal at a reasonable price (we are celebrating of course). My wife and I each ordered steak (New York strip and a filet). I had a baked potato and salad and my wife asked for the fettuccine parmesan. The food was great and cooked as we requested, each with a side of fresh green beans. Our salads were greens (no iceberg) with green pepper slices, cherry tomato halves, and homemade dressing (they have traditional, bottled options like ranch, or 1000 Island) and they offer several homemade dressings. We each tried a homemade option (sesame and tarragon/honey) which were excellent. We finished our meal with a slice of vanilla cheesecake and blueberry topping and a slice of peanut butter cup pie. The cheesecake is either homemade or high-quality purchased. Our service was excellent and I highly recommend stopping by if you are coming to the Munising-Marquette area! read more

The inside of the place is really nice. Our server said she was pretty new. Okay, I get it. But they weren't that busy (probably because it was raining and cold at the time, mid day). Took a loooooooong time to get a couple of salmon burgers which were cooked dry and were pretty tasteless. Without the tartar sauce, it would have been indistinguishable. Their homemade cole slaw was also bland. Sorry, but really lame tasting food that took way too long is not an incentive to return.
