Yes, the decor is outdated. It probably hasn't changed much since my mom ate there in high school in the 70s. (That may be an exaggeration, but not by much.) And be sure to bring a jacket in if you are cold-natured. I'm always freezing in there. That being said... I'm not a breakfast person so I can't review the breakfast items, but I like going to the Villa for the spinach calzones. They use fresh spinach, and it's really yummy... I like them a lot better than Christian's for calzones. The pizza is also good. read more

I stayed in the hotel next to the restaurant and the parking lot was full every morning. It is definitely a popular place. The staff are gems. Just the happiest bunch of people I have ever seen. The restaurant is very typical of a college town. The menu is pretty standard fare of mostly convenience foods. The store itself looks like a repurposed Pizza Hut down to the red plastic dividers between the booths. This is the place you want to go when you need a bite to eat after a long drive into town. The staff will certainly perk you up and their immersion conversations just make you feel like you are part of some inside joke. Just a great place to go to feel welcome even when you are just visiting. read more

Three strikes, yer out! We've been looking for a new pancake place since The Tavern closed. Two times we have tried to order pancakes to go from The Villa, two times they have shorted us! Tonight we tried to dine in - HUGE mistake. No wait to be seated. As many open tables as full. Took our waitress longer than necessary to take our order, but nothing awful. Now this is a diner, and 30 minutes later, no food. Nothing. Syrup was brought to our table & we were told we'd have our food "soon." 10 more minutes passed. I ask if we need to go elsewhere to eat. Told our order will be right out. 45 minutes in, people who arrived 20 minutes after us are eating & we still have NOTHING. We walked out, crying kids in tow, so that we could feed them SOMETHING before bedtime. After we left the parking lot, I called Mykonos Cafe. By they time we got there, our CORRECT order was waiting for us. The drive couldn't have taken more than 5 minutes. Seriously, The Villa, seriously? Never again! read more

This place is great. Is it a fancy, high-end restaurant? No. It's a family-friendly diner with affordable meals that are delicious. You can get breakfast served all day, awesome baked spaghetti, good salads and sandwiches and you can wash it down with brewed sweet tea. The waitstaff is friendly and competent. One of my favorite places to eat in Charlottesville. As an added bonus- if you have kids there's a clear view of the train tracks going over a bridge, and trains pass frequently. In the fall, the UVA marching band practices right across the street. read more

My family has known this diner since the 1970s. Through changing building owners and managers, the relationship with the staff and cooks has remained as friendly and as timeless as ever. I grew up in this place, and although there have been some changes here and there, I love it! Spaghetti ala Roma is the best ever! And you won't find fluffier pancakes (unless you don't like that) anywhere else! Although, you'll find the vets of the diner in the mornings. (Not to discredit the night staff, but you can't ignore the expertise and seniority of the folks who work in the daytime) Also, I see a lot of complaints about "greasy" food... to be fair, the best pizza in the US (note that I said US, not world) is in New York, and you might as well order a pizza to go with your grease up there. In other words, if you want "healthy" food, go to Jason's Deli or Whole Foods. It's a diner, not a Red Lobster. read more

Don't bother eating at this place. What a disappointment. The booths are falling apart and it is clear that the owner is putting as little money into the building as they can. The food is nothing special and the sausage links were not even edible. Maybe they can get away with the sub-par food and atmosphere because of the proximity to UVA and hung over students don't really care what they eat, but if you don't fall into that category go somewhere else. read more

My husband and I have been dining at the Villa for over 20 years. It was always one of our favorites for quick, easy, diner food. My husband (a confirmed carnivore) always stated that they had the best burgers in town (in part, I'm sure, because they would cook his burgers rare). I don't know what has happened over the past few years but the level of the food (not ever gourmet by any means, but good for what it was) has slumped significantly. Not once in the past 18+ months have they gotten our order correct and tonight, after sending it back once for not being cooked correctly, then having to wait while the microwaved the bacon that was supposed to be on it, the meat in my husband's burger actually tasted rancid. Unfortunately, after 20+ years of patronage, we will not be going back. read more

Okay, maybe my standards have been set too high by Los Angeles cuisine, but this place sucked. We came here for a late-night meal. I can't say I was expecting much based on the exterior. Let's just say the food lived up to the appearance of the restaurant. I ordered this baked spaghetti thing. Basically spaghetti with meatballs/sausage then topped with cheese and baked. So a combination of spaghetti and lasagna. There was a box around it on the menu and I asked the waitress and she said it was a specialty. The food came with a side salad and one breadstick (and about 10 little butters). The lettuce in the salad didn't taste fresh at all. The breadstick was pretty standard. The entree itself was kind of bland, there wasn't enough sauce, the italian sausage had no taste, and the sauce was probably Ragu. I've definitely had better. Meal was 9 bucks but it definitely wasn't worth the price. Some of the people I was with ordered pizza. Didn't have any, but it looked SUPER greasy. I know this place isn't supposed to be serving gourmet food, and I definitely was expecting something better than that. Thought it would be along the lines of Denny's or Friendly's but I'm pretty sure those are better... The waitress/hostess were both very courteous and attentive though, so 2 stars. We had to wait a bit, understandable on a Sunday morning. When we were seated, we had to wait about 15 min for the server to even stop by and acknowledge us. The food was ok, standard diner far,o big deal. The service was just rotten. We were made to feel that we were the least important customers there. This is a good breakfast spot. The prices & food are pretty decent. I love the Alaskan Belgian Waffle. The inside is shabby however & doesn't look like it's been dusted/cleaned/remodeled in years. The bathrooms are scary to say the least. The wait staff and new owners are friendly which makes up for it just a tad. The old owners were really rude and seemed mad at their customers all of the time (like they were a bother). My boyfriend & I went there for a quick meal before a movie & the old foreign lady yelled at us because he hugged me! Really!? We weren't groping in the corner or making out. He literally hugged me at the counter when we were paying our check. Also, I had scrambled eggs and they had shells in them. I didn't eat them & they wouldn't take them off of the bill! When I told management they said, "Well, at least you know they're not powdered." Unbelievable. So glad they got out of the customer service business! read more

A real sleeper from the curb, BUT upon entering, we were treated with true hospitality and courtesy, and in a really friendly manner. The 60's style booths can sometimes mean you have really hit on something, and after having the pan pizza (full combo) in the 10 inch size, and the eggplant parmesan with a spaghetti side (standard delivery with the eggplant), and the wonderful waitress Sarah and her partner (name unknown) and the maitre'd, we were totally impressed. Have not had such service and good food for sometime. I would take anyone there, and I have lunch and possibly dinner for tomorrow as we could not even come close to the final end with all of the fixins. Nice to know 3,000 miles from home, I could find real family, fresh cookin'. I really got a kick out of the music also. The place was great. read more

First timers at The Villa Diner today (7-26-2015) in Charlottesville, Virginia. Couldn't be more pleased with the food and the service!!! The place was packed at noon on a Sunday and we were still seated promptly and attended to superbly. The six of us had food ranging from omelettes to crepes to waffles to pancakes to salads. We are locals who had never eaten here previously, and WE WILL RETURN. Reasonably-priced comfort food served comfortably. Kudos to The Villa Diner.
