The one star is for ambiance, otherwise, run the other way. We stopped in for breakfast on Saturday. My wife ordered the avocado toast. The avocado was gritty, chunky, and unripe / bitter. When we commented on it to the server he apologized and told the owner. The owner came out and in a bluster started the 'conversation' with 'I know, the avocado is terrible. We've tried slicing it, mashing it, blending it, and grinding it, but it is just horrible.' I suggested to him that since he knew it was terrible perhaps they should not be serving it, or the wait staff should be telling the customers at the time of order to consider something else. He responded with... 'well, it wasn't quite as bad early this morning and this is what they gave us..'. Basically, his response was that he was given bad food so that is what his customers would get. I just can't support a business that cares so little about giving their customers quality food. To add insult to injury, he made a big show of saying I'm not going to charge you for it. When we looked at the bill he had deducted $0.85. Remember, the entry was avocado toast. The avocado was terrible, and the owner new it before serving it. Once again, the owner's rude behaviour and temper are items you do not need to enjoy a meal. The price is high, value is low and the food is fair at best, but almost always cold for breakfast. Once a staple for our group is now in the past. Would suggest other places like the Track Restaurant. Don't waste your time. read more

This is everything you would want in a small town southern diner and more. Great food, friendly staff and even better prices. They have a small space to work with, but I have never waited for a table. The staff is constantly hustling and extremely attentive. As locals, my husband and I try to support local businesses. We decided to try the Villager Deli one afternoon for lunch. The special that day was quiche, so we ordered that. The quiche was underwhelming. It obviously came frozen from a commercial bakery and then heated in the microwave. No refills were offered for our tea (and that's a sin in the South). The wait staff seem bothered that we were there. The side salad was mostly small and mostly lettuce. Maybe regulars receive better treatment, but we won't be regulars so I guess I'll never know. read more

we walked by this place and it looked good. We went inside (my husband, son & myself). the atmosphere inside was not impressive. very crowded and was dated. the owner & waitress just stared at us, and kind of barked different suggestions where we could sit. after we sat- no one explained how to order, you fill out a menu yourself-sort of like they do at a sushi restaraunt. we filled it out-the owner took our order sheet and told us we needed to fill out separate sheets!! (he should have explained to us) he sat down right beside us and was sctraching out our order and seemed very annoyed with us. after taking our drink order- he brought us both waters, my husband ordered a soda. it was a very uncomfortable experience. After waiting for 40 minutes my wife, who had observed 5 tabled around her turning after receiving and eating their food , inquired of the owner if anything had happened to their order that he had originally taken. He administered a loud tong lashing, asked her if she couldn't tell that they were busy and let them know there were other people waiting. I have been eating here for years and it is always good. This time I was craving a hotdog which I rarely eat and have never gotten one from here. So I ordered one with chili and slaw. Love Love Love the pimento cheese grilled cheese! I crave their pimento cheese! I don't know what secret ingredient they put in there, but it really makes it stand out from other cheeses! A local favorite! Service may not be obsessively in your face nice, but they take good care of you and make sure your order is right....and if it's not they'll fix it. The owner is a really nice guy, its sad people infer he is arrogant at first meeting, give the guy a chance! I always get the chef salad, it's huge and delicious...fresh ingredients and always crisp and filling. It is a local favorite, so I can see why the uncertainty in filling out the menu, and not appreciating the ambiance of the historic building for the out-of-towners. The young man that waited on us was very polite and courteous. The tables were very close together so you could hear chatter from other tables near by. That wasn't the problem at all! The problem was when you hear employees complain about other employees and even about customers sitting at tables for too long and costing them tips and then smiling at them when they leave, it makes you lose your appetite and quite frankly, it makes you lose respect. We will never go back there again. It's obviously a local place to gather and have the same customers frequent it and that's how they keep their doors open. Traveling golfers and locals. My husband paid and it wax like he was being questioned. The man asked him " where are you from? What do you do there?" Maybe my husband should have told him just how he felt and said none of your business, but there were people behind him and so he politely answered the gentleman. I saw and read all the reviews on The Village deli, It got all good reviews, now I have eaten there 3 times and the was good. The service was also good. But the last time I went, I went with my family, three adults. Three normal breakfast's and coffee. I was shocked when I saw the bill for $44.00. Get this $2.49 for a cup of coffee. Really? I love their grilled cheese and tuna sandwiches, and that's really the only reason why I keep coming back. Complaints? Aplenty. Waitstaff is usually short and curt, orders I have been a part of have come back incorrect and fries are almost ALWAYS COLD. I mean, when the fries are hot, they're delish, however I find that's usually the exception. The paper slip ordering I've always found a bit novel, but I could see where that would be a turnoff, if not sometimes confusing to other patrons. Hot sandwiches have turned up cold as well from time to time, so it truly is hit or miss. Whenever I come, I just try to be as sweet as syrup and hope for the best, like I said, I have some sort of cosmic hankering for their a couple of their sammies! This place could be dynamite, but there seems to be no effort put forth and there's a palpable lack of interest in customer service within the dynamic of the establishment (in all levels). But as I've stated in previous reviews, I'm getting used to that in the service industry. I do, however, think their sandwiches are good and it's an okay place to stop if you're visiting the Village shoppes (Plus, I'd like to try out their breakfasts after perusing their breaky menu). I was torn between 2 or 3 stars. Yesterday, breakfast was good - today, not so good. Watress that we had today obviously catered to the locals. Not only did she serve them first with my entree but held off delivering my entree and my husbands which she left on the counter while she waited for the corrected order for them. This place is fantastic in every sense. Our waitress was so much fun and the owning family is wonderful. We all had delicious sandwiches with high quality breads and meats. The atmosphere is perfect. I don't see how a sandwich shop gets better than this. Unlike another reviewer, we arrived at 2.29pm (they close at 2.30pm).
