This is a perfect local joint to eat at while in town. We were given this recommendation from a local and are happy we were. When you walk in, the menu is above your head. This is an order at the counter, find a table, then they bring your food to your table kind of place. We started with fried Brussel sprouts. They were good, but to be fair, they were frozen and not fresh Brussel sprouts. The fried pickles were also a hit in our family. We had a burger. It was awesome! We also had parmesan fries. They were fresh and cooked perfectly. We ordered the special pumpkin butternut squash soup. It was a bit too seasoned for my taste buds. This is a family friendly restaurant. Was in the area, heard good things about this restaurant, decided to give it s try. Breakfast is the easiest mean to prepare, how can they mess it up 1) Coffee was absolutely vile 2) A cook should know the difference between Over easy and eggs overcooked so dry they're Inedible 3) Almost $4 for 3 pathetically thin slices of bacon 4) Supposedly toasted English muffin was barely luke warm $28 for a sub par breakfast for 2 is a disgrace. Place wasn't what I'd call busy and there were a fair number of people working -- it's basically a burger/ice cream place so why almost an HOUR wait to get food? It always surprises me, as I pass by, the amount of cars in the parking lot. I have been here once, with my daughter. The food was ok, I didn't find anything really special about it. The thing I won't forget, though was the rude older lady who brought our food, tossing it on the table, and then barked at us to remember to clear our table. I've passed this joint several times during my work travels and finally took the time to stop....and I'm glad I did! It was a late summer/ early fall afternoon, perfect for eating outside, so I ordered from the outside window. Selected the grilled chicken sandwich, chips, and tea. Total came to just under $10...not bad. Chips are standard cod chips, tea was tea, but the sandwich was pretty stinkin good! Real good bun, fresh lettuce and tomato, avocado, and i think chipotle sauce....the chicken could have been bigger, but all in all...Dynomite! Simple, rustic, great food! I had the Cobb Salad...amazing and fresh. Decorated in Americana, including wagon wheel light fixtures and a different set of salt shakers on each table. I've been a few times now when traveling down Route 2...it's a quintessential stop along the way that harkens back to yesteryear. Always busy, but always prompt. Eat inside, outside or take out. 1st time here. Our girls live in Greenfield. We're from So California. This place was just what I expected. Excellent American'50s cafe style food. So good. I had a turkey, bacon, cheese, tomato on toasted bread. Husband had burger with cheese, bacon and egg. Girls had Garden hot dog and blat. Got sides of fried broccoli, onion rings and fries. After dinner in Turners Falls we decided that we wanted some homemade ice cream so we stopped in at the Wagon Wheel. This little country diner has an amazing amount of home cooked meal items as well as pretty great ice cream. The last time that we came here was for breakfast and we have to say that we were not disappointed! The staff here is always pleasant and the low key atmosphere is really great. During Christmas they have really great decorations which makes it festive for the holiday. Overall, this is a place to try out if you're looking for some home cooked food. read more

My boyfriend and I were traveling through town and were actually on our way to another restaurant when we spotted the wagon wheel. I squealed for joy because it was just so damn cute. I am a sucker for country style places with gardens and outdoor seating... This place had it. You order your food at the window and wait for your number to be called. It was delicious (I had a burger and he had the pulled pork sandwich which he raved about). Love the family, country feel. Inside looked adorable too! I went here with a group of 8 the other day, on a day trip to MassMoCA. We came for breakfast, and had a variety of dishes - all impressed. The Wagon Wheel pancakes were particularly impressive, along with the hash scramble. We also stopped by on our way back for dinner - I had the special chicken pot pie, which was excellent, but the table also shared chili cheese fries and garlic parmesan fries, both of which were outstanding. The BEST vegetarian burger around. Including at my previous all-time fave, Cafe Flore in San Francisco. This one is made of black beans, corn, spice, and love, and served with avocados and on a bun with lettuce and a really delicious creamy dressing. AMAZING. It's my latest love. And, just as an update, even though they only take cash, the Wagon Wheel has an ATM machine (with $2 charge), for those emergencies when you just MUST have a delicious black bean burger, or a waffle with strawberries (during breakfast -- until 11:00 each day), and don't have any cash. It's the most bang for your buck, with the freshest and most creative food. Really awesome kitschy atmosphere, too. But, then I covered that in my previous review. You can get a Grass Fed Free Range Hamburger here! WOW! This restaurant is very casual, even a bit rustic, but the menu has upscale "fast" food. I had a delicious grilled chicken sandwich with avocado and chipolte dressing. The fries came from a potato, not a factory. My husband had a Mediterranean Paninni. Everything was delicious, but the fries were a tiny-bit greasy, and my bun was a cheap mcdonald's type --- it didn't match the quality of the rest of the sandwich. When you walk in, you look at the chalk-board-menu above the counter. You order, pay, and then find a table. The very intelligent, upscale and friendly staff bring your food to your table. There was nothing specifically labeled organic on the menu other than the grass-fed free-range beef mentioned above, however I was told that much on the menu was local (see below for more on this). Good for localvores. The restaurant had a good vibe and seemed gay-friendly. We will go back again and try their breakfast! There are lots of picnic tables outside, so it looks like going in warm weather would provide a nice outdoor dining experience. NOTE: CASH ONLY Update: Two days after the above review, we went back for breakfast, which was delicious. I asked the friendly person who took our order about their local food. Immediately she listed off a list of local farms and cooperatives. She said that they buy local produce, eggs and meats whenever possible, and that many of their local sources provide organic vegetables. She said that their main supplier was about half organic and 100% local, and that their supplemental suppliers "in season" were all local. Driving by, one might assume that the Wagon Wheel only serves your typical, roadside grub ... but you would be very wrong! This Is a prime example of a comfortably casual Country Drive-In where you can get great food made with local ingredients whether you are a meat-eater or vegetarian, and whether you're there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack. Since all the food is made to order (no microwaved food here - they don't even have one!), you may have to wait a bit if they're really busy, but it's a great place to relax and read the paper or chat with folks inside or outside at one of the picnic tables. The specials board changes regularly and includes such things as soups, seasonal salads, special burgers, entrees, and breakfast specials. I'm a coffee snob, but have pretty much stopped making my own at home since their locally roasted coffee is so good! If you're in a hurry, match up your coffee-to-go with one of their muffins, scones, breakfast breads, or on weekends, homemade donuts! As well as plain, sugared or glazed, they also have specials like maple-bacon, or lemon-glazed topped with strawberries - oh, yum! Oh! and make sure you save room for some homemade ice cream or sorbet!! They offer about a dozen amazing flavors each day that change on a regular basis -- a few of the recent mouth-watering choices include strawberry-rhubarb, lemon custard, frozen pudding (!), butter cashew, mocha heath bar, honey pistachio, and strawberry-kiwi sorbet. (I'm feeling a bit like Pavlov's dog as I'm watching my mental movie of the view into their ice cream freezer!) I could go on and on about things that make the Wagon Wheel worth going to (can you tell that I've been there more than a couple times?!), but suffice it to say that it's a friendly, home-y destination with lots of yummy homemade options to choose from. I'm a big fan of this place... the food is fabulous for what it is, and the ice cream and popsicles par none. But... Expect to wait an hour for your food in the summer. If the place is more than half full, the staff and kitchen seem overwhelmed, the food gets sloppy and the service goes to hell. This has happened regularly over several visits over several years. Hopefully it's a problem they can fix, but given that it's been a problem for several years, with a manager saying (on Memorial Day weekend) "Sorry, but we didn't expect the rush", I'm not optimistic. Until then, in spite of my love for the food and the folks that run the business, they only get 2 stars because they need to figure out their timing and linkages. read more

Lucked into this place on a way back from a hike in Western Mass. Could not have been happier! There were 5 of us and we were desperate for a non-chain food option. We all got different things: my grass-fed burger was tasty and cooked medium (their default, for a welcome change). Not a big patty, but tender and flavorful--no super punch of grass-fed flavor, but it's hard to get that in just a burger. Great fries; I got roundly mocked for saying to my friends that they tasted like potato...but well, they did. I loved, loved, loved their excellent use of local ingredients, including local beer--hurrah, Steel Rail! Their homemade ice cream, as other reviewers have noted, is also outstanding. We tried apple pie (real crust! omg!) and pumpkin (nicely spiced, very creamy). But the thing that has stuck in my mind since my visit a couple weeks back, to be honest, is the decor. It's full of retro kitsch that could be self-conscious and hipster-annoying, but is really just sweet because you can tell that whoever picks these things out does so with love. Our favorites were the unique salt and pepper shakers on each table: tiny jukeboxes, Mr. & Mrs. Claus, cacti, you name it. The counter service was friendly and casual; this is a seat-yourself place. It would be nice to go in the winter when they've got the wood stove in the main dining room going. Any time I'm out this way on Route 2 I'll be stopping by for sure. Nice breakfast easy off I-91 on the way to Vermont The Wagon Wheel was a nice choice! I loved all of the vintage paint by number paintings on the walls. We ate in the first room you walk into. The breakfast was good and huge. I had the big breakfast which consisted of 2 eggs, potatoes,toast, a meat choice and 2 large pancakes. I shared the pancakes with my partner. The coffee was good too. My partner had the breakfast burrito and he enjoyed it very much. This is an easy stop off on the way up to VT off of I-91. read more

The place is very cute and the guy working there was really nice. The burgers were so bland though (grass-fed cows and all). Why? And the fries! They looked yummy, but they were all greasy and limp. Several years ago, I took off on my very first long motorcycle ride from Boston, with no particular destination in mind. I thought I might like to see Lake Champlain, so I headed west on Rt 2. It was about 40 degrees in Boston, but I hadn't bothered to check the weather out west. By the time I got to Millers Falls, I was so cold that I couldn't feel my feet and was shivering so violently that I had a hard time getting the words out of my mouth when I asked the guy at the bowling alley where I could get some eggs and coffee. He told me to head down to the Wagon Wheel. When I got inside, I sat shivering for about 10 minutes drinking coffee, which was the most delicious I think I ever had. Then I demolished a huge omelette and potatoes. I think its within the realm of possibility to claim that the Wagon Wheel Restaurant saved my life. I don't know if it was the coffee or the omelette, but I think I should have been dead from hypothermia. Also they were very nice. I'd forgotten the name of the place, until I heard an author mention it while discussing his new book on the radio. The name rang a bell, and I was delighted to find it here, so that I can leave the 5 star review that the Wagon Wheel deserves belatedly. I've since invested in an electrically heated jacket, but I would definitely stop and eat there again even if I wasn't freezing my ass off. read more

This is the place to stop on the way from Boston to MassMoCA. Conveniently located right on Route 2, super affordable, and vegetarian friendly. They even have veggie hot dogs. I pulled up late at night and didn't realize they had just closed. The server was so sweet and actually let us order some hot dogs much to the chagrin of the cook. I felt bad but they gained a regular customer from that one simple act. Haven't tried their ice cream yet, but with flavored like Honey Lavender, Chocolate Cupcake and Sea Salt Caramel, I just might be tempted next time. read more
