This place is close to the heart of many locals. Whenever friends or family from out of town come out to the area, we always take them to The Walpack Inn. It's in a beautiful valley full of nature and wildlife, and the building makes you feel like you've been invited to your Uncle's hunting lodge, as it's decorated with taxidermy and has wood all around. Most of the seating is under luscious plants in a sunroom-esque area, from where you have an excellent view of the meadows and ridge. As for the food, it's very good (by the area's standards, at least). The menu is complete with classic American fare -- steak, lamb, surf and turf combos, etc. -- and they're well-regraded for their prime rib special and oysters. They have a decked out salad bar that comes with most menu items, and they bake a delicious bread onsite that's very, very good too. In my opinion, you come to the Walpack Inn for the experience -- or a nice evening at the bar -- but the food hits the spot and never disappoints either. Woo hoo indeed! 2 drinks, 2 pieces of homemade honey wheat bread with butter, 2 foxes and 2 Canadian geese later I am absolutely in love with this place. We visited on a lazy Sunday around 4 PM and there were still tables around the windows. The place is a mix of ... log cabin meets grandmas home cooking and fireplace meets country chick. Yes, that good! We got seated promptly, by the window, drinks were brought up in a timely fashion and service was friendly and somewhere in the middle ... not too slow, not too fast. We didn't mind, considering that the view is gorgeous! Open lawns with tall grasses edge towards the forest where all kinds of magical wildlife resides. At dusk the animals will come out to feed on the corn the staff has promptly put out for them. A true experience. The place is nestled amidst the national park and it is a solid 45 minutes to an hour from any highway. Absolutely remote and lovely. And then... FOOD! It needs to be capitalized, this is no mere "bite to eat and run". Did I mention the complimentary bread? Well, I will mention it again mostly because you can also buy a loaf to take home on the way out. A small one will run you $5 and $14 for the big one. Nom, nom, nom... We had seafood selection (I think... ) and NY Strip. A diner entree will run you $20-35 depending on your choice but you also get unlimited salad bar with a descent selection and a side dish - potatoes, garlic mash, sweet potato or rice. Dessert menu wasn't anything impressive - Juniors cheesecakes, pies and coffee... We were beyond full with dinner, didn't even bother too much to look. All in all, recommended! We really enjoy Walpack! It's a bit of a wild wood trek for us but once you're there it's so cozy and warm in a cabin like atmosphere. The huge hearth with roaring fire is toasty and welcome with temps in the 20's now. Happy hour is bar only on Saturday's from 3-4p and then dinner starts. And let me tell you, it gets BUSY! They have a nice variety of fresh oysters, if you're inclined. I love their brown bread served warm once you sit down. Followed by a nice Salad bar with every entree. We're been coming here for decades. We celebrate birthdays and Valentine's Day here every year as well as other random visits. We've traveled a lot domestically and internationally and been to many Michelin starred restaurants, but none compare for overall experience. The staff is always outstanding. We've never had a single issue with any staff. The food is always perfectly prepared with long-standing always-on-the-menu items and new offerings. The decor is rustic yet sophisticated. The locale is breathtaking and can been seen through the massive glass walls from every seat. The cozy fireplace and bar area is a perfect waiting spot when seating may be a while due to their popularity. We decided to try a new restaurant on our 38th wedding anniversary. The Walpack Inn was it., what a mistake.! My wife ordered the Stuffed Shrimp and I ordered the Classic New York Strip Steak. Her dinner was so salty that it was impossible to eat. My Steak must of been frozen and thawed out in the microwave before grilling. I can tell because I couldn't cut it, even with a steak knife. I left the whole steak on the plate and asked for the check. Very disappointing! One positive note. They have very good homemade bread. Been here SO many times but last night was the highlight. i had a surprise party for my son's 40th. So well planned from my first phone call...everyone's dinner was perfect. Scallops were perfect and everyone's entree was top notch. Our server was so wonderful and on top of things including the birthday cake that we brought with us. My son brought his girlfriend here for their first official date, his steak was undercooked....TWICE! Yet, no one seemed to blink an eye...maybe it was because they are 17 yo "kids"? Well, I can guarantee you that my son tipped as much - if not better than some adults even after his meal was inedible (and was still charged for it). I was very surprised at my recent experience. At the end of the meal they tell you on the bill that there is charge for using a credit card. It stated it nowhere on the door or the menu. This is bait and switch and not legal. I stated on the reciept that I was not authorizing the charge and they put it through anyway. Very shady. The table next to me complained about the fee and called it tacky. The $46 prime rib was bland without flavor. Worst of all both my wife and I were up all night with food provisioning. Wow, what a great place! I had heard of the Walpack Inn via TV commercials in the past, and while I wanted to go it just always seemed too far away. Imagine my surprise when, after a weekend hike to Crater Lake, we realized we were pretty close and were in need of some delicious dinner. We decided to swing by even though closing time was in an hour. They let us know that we'd have a wait, but that there would be no rush. We grabbed a drink at the bar (decent selection and great friendly bartender) and were called to our beautiful table by the window much faster than we had expected. Score! The menu is heavy on the meats, so vegans should stay away. We both had steaks which were delicious, although most of mine came home in a doggy bag since I'd filled up at the salad bar (I really tried not to, but it was just too good!). The only bummer? We didn't get to see any deer. The view was beautiful and there was plenty of feed, but some folks were out and about and the wildlife seemed to stay away. Ambience is nice - large dining area. We decided to visit since we haven't been back for about 15 years. Shrimp cocktail and scallops were delicious. Yum yum yum. Every couple of years, my family has a family reunion out on the Delaware River. And we always have one big family dinner at Walpack. It's a beautiful rustic house, with tons of seating for my huge family. The big panoramic window looks out on a beautiful landscape, and the staff scatters crumbs for the deer so that they come up and nibble in the window as you nibble on the other side of the glass. Just gorgeous scenery. The food is fantastic. They are famous for their bread - a nutty, brown bread that they bring out in abundance to your table. My mom usually buys a couple boxes of their mix, which they sell in the restaurant, and brings it home to make for ourselves! They have spectacular seafood. I usually get the lobster, which is brought out whole to the table. I then make my male cousins crack it open for me, because I don't like it when my dinner stares at me. Their lobster is cooked perfectly - melt-in-your-mouth tender with heaps of drawn butter. For dessert, they have awesome homebaked pies. I can't wait for my next dinner at Walpack. I have heard so much about it but it was a let down. Tables did'nt have enough arm room constantly bumping elbows during dinner. Prime Rib was way over priced and had more fat than meat. What can I say! This is our favorite place to go. We don't get up that way nearly enough but we try to at least 4/5 times a year. The brown bread with the sweet butter is outstanding!! Tonight we had the oysters, duck and salmon. Everything was delicious! The food is constantly good as is the service. We have gotten Blair about 3 times and we highly recommend asking for her. We had such a lovely dinner here! We came on a Sunday evening as they had live music going on with an incredible fall mountain back drop-what a vibe. They give bread for the table which is absolutely massive but warm and soft-incredible. Unfortunately they were out of the stuffed squash, but we ordered the short ribs and truffle pasta. The short ribs were delicious and super tender. The pasta was a little on the bland side for me but we added hot sauce and some of the short rib to it to make it a little more tasty. The pasta was al dente which I'm also not a big fan of. Both portions were pretty sizable-my boyfriend and I were stuffed when we left. There were a few flies flying around us and a couple managed to fly into my beer. There was a good amount of people here so I would recommend making reservations. Would definitely return! read more

I went to the Walpack Inn on a really lovely date in January. He told me it was a bit of a drive into the woods...and he was right! Wow, this restaurant is like an oasis in the middle of nowhere, and on a dark winter night, it is actually a little spooky as you drive up the winding roads to this cabin in the woods. But oh what a cabin it it! The Walpack Inn is deceptively large...from the outside when you park, it doesn't look like much more than one room, but it's been added onto a few times by the owners and is a gorgeous building. Filled with massive stuffed animal heads and with a big steak selection on the menu, this is no place for a vegetarian. But the decor is very rustic and it all ties together so well...high vaulted ceilings, a large stone fireplace by the bar, and two huge dining rooms. Windows line the entire back of the restaurant and you can watch deer graze as you dine. Seriously magical! There is even a cabin on the grounds that you can rent, which is pretty cool. The menu isn't huge, but the daily specials add a nice variety. My date and I both opted for the Seafood Special, which included filet of sole, scallops and shrimp all served in skillet sizzling with melted butter...oh wow, heaven. There are a lot of steak options, as well. All entrees come with the salad bar which was very fresh. And Walpack Inn brown bread, served warm. I really enjoyed my meal and would love to go back soon! read more

Six of us went for dinner on a Friday night at 6. We didn't have to wait at all, had a great table by the window to watch the wildlife and had a great meal. The blackened scallops and the special Peppered Tuna were our favorite! The prime rib was delicious too! The creamy garlic dressing was great-you have to like garlic for it. What a unique place! My family and I dined at the Walpack Inn this past weekend. My father used to fish in the area and it was one of his go-to places for dinner, which prompted our visit. The restaurant is secluded and after driving many miles with not much else around, it was a surprise to see a packed parking lot. The restaurant itself is huge with a few different dining rooms. Since we were a group of 7, we had reservations and were seated in a room that seemed rustic and lodge-like. Stuffed animals (deer, ducks, bear, etc.) hung on the walls and giant windows provided a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and countryside. While we ate, deer and turkeys roamed outside. The view was serene and peaceful. We all had drinks (cocktails and wine) and shared a few appetizers. The shrimp skewers were tasty, but I probably liked the baked goat cheese more. It was just the right amount and served with some flatbread crackers. For our meals, we had the stuffed shrimp and prime rib, one of their specialities. The shrimp had a small bit of crabmeat in them and were in a buttery sauce, which I thought hit the spot. Other members in the group enjoyed the prime rib. The entrees included a side dish (most of us had baked potatoes or wild rice) as well as a trip to the salad bar. A children's menu is also available for younger guests. Tables are also given some of the Walpack's famous "brown bread," which is a little sweet and delicious with some salted butter. We each bought a loaf of bread to take home because we liked it so much. We were full from our dinner and didn't have any room for dessert. It was a beautiful night so we went outside to look around and take some photos. Overall, the food was delicious, our server Angie was attentive, and the view and experience were amazing! This place is very nice for its outdoor seating.I'm not sure why they didn't do outiside seating in the first place because it is amazing.We first started out with their homemade bread and butter which tasted good but didn't have a lot of salt.They don't have their salad bar anymore but they give you salads with the options of dressing and it tasted good.Then my main entree was very good,the salmon tasted so fresh with the dill sauce and the garlic mashed potatoes were outstanding.I tried my moms plate which tasted really nice even though it was scallops I still like it and it didn't taste like rubber.Then I had my sisters pasta and it tasted so so so good...The food tasted all good...The bill was a decent amount of money but hey it was all worth it. read more
