I came across the Walpack Inn while staying at l an Airbnb in Dingman's Ferry . Yelp brought me here. Lol everything about this place is magical. Was not expecting how the lay out was from the outside, but if you've been to an antique shop and they sell those enormous tables, you'll find them here too. As you go in further to the restaurant, various plants are hung up from the ceiling which our server said the owner waters and takes care of them and it takes her a good one to two hours. Honestly just check out this place. You'll get a 16oz steak for $44 (teriyaki ribeye) which not only comes with an open salad bar but also with freshly baked bread. Sunday lunch! We arrived at 12:30 for cocktails and appetizers at the bar. What a nice place! Sitting at the bar while we waited for our table reminded me of going to a supper club in Wisconsin. This is high praise, I LOVE Wisconsin supper clubs. The food was great. French dip was amazing and the burger was excellent, great char flavor. Salad bar was awesome, great fresh ingredients. The magic was in the surroundings. The view was great, but also the building itself was beautiful, and there is so much history throughout. My wife and I went to Walpack for our 52nd anniversary. We thought it would a special treat. The prime rib was ok but did not have the marbling they claim on their site so it was just ok. The $30 lobster tail was good but very small. My wife's penne al la vodka was bland and dry. That was the good part. 9:30 that night we received notice from American Express that there was a charge on our card by the restaurant for over $1,400! So much for the special evening. We cancelled the card and Amex said they would investigate the matter. The following day the business manager called in response to my texts and email to say the server used the check number instead of the $25 tip amount we applied to our $125 check amount. The check number was the $1,400+ amount. She said she was sorry and she would talk to the owner to see what else they would do. We have not heard any more from Walpack. We assume the charge will be removed but this was a very bad experience and a mediocre meal. read more

We have been coming to the Walpack since we moved to Sussex County in 1975. Forty Eight years of consistently great food, service, staff and a warm atmosphere. This family ( Heigis) and spouses and now the children really know how to run a consistent & excellent restaurant business. Just did a family Mothers day here with my wife, 2 daughters, 2 son in law's and 4 grandchildren and everyone enjoyed themselves. I have driven here through Tuttle Road, Struble Road, Hardwick Road, Millbrook Road, Old Mine Road and thru Fiddler Elbow (when it was open) and would not describe any one of them as scary. Come visit Tillman Ravine, Buttermilk Falls and avail yourselves of the local hiking trails and top that off with dinner at the Inn. read more

I recently rented the cabin on the premises and have to say it is one of the best getaways. Im very picky when it comes to where I sleep. The beds were more comfortable than mine T home. The house and linens smells of downy fresh. Fresh flowers were displayed which left a beautiful aroma. The cabin is fully equipped. The atmosphere is peaceful. I enjoyed reading on the porch and even staying indoors as the windows shared all the beauty of nature surrounding the cabin. The restuarant and service was outstanding. Saturday nights are very busy so be sure to make a reservation in advance. Mostly, i enjoyed meeting the entire family. Very lovely people. Its a must have experience !!!!!! Beautiful Mother's Day lunch! The workers were super friendly and productive. The food was delicious. I had an espresso martini which was great and the grilled salmon was outstanding. To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. I wanted to take my significant other somewhere special for his Birthday dinner. Based on various reviews and recommendations from friends, I was so excited to experience it for myself as well as provide a memorable birthday experience. It was a 2 hour round trip drive only to end up being underwhelmed, embarrassed and extremely disappointed. I reserved a table near the fireplace, which was my 1st regret. Directly next to us and in direct view was a rack with bins full of dirty dishes being periodically filled by servers as they cleared tables. I was mortified that this was going to be our view for, what I had hoped to be, a lovely evening. We were immediately greeted by our server who was extremely pleasant. We had just sat down and wanted a minute to select a cocktail. She said she'd be right back. After waiting somewhat patiently for almost 30 minutes, without so much as a glass of water, we had to get the attention of another server for help. When our waitress returned, we were brought bread (which was delicious) ordered drinks and appetizers and told to help ourselves to the salad bar. The appetizers came out SO fast that we hadn't even started eating our salads and now had the appetizers sitting on the table and getting cold. The Baked Goat cheese appetizer was delicious and I can only imagine how much better it would have been, had I eaten it warm. That being said, the timing was awful and felt rushed. We waited to place our entree orders out of fear of it coming out too fast. Bottom line...The venue was beautiful and the food was good. However, for the price tag, sitting next to dirty dishes, waiting 30 minutes for a cocktail and then feeling rushed to dine... it was not the birthday experience I was hoping to provide. Absolutely atrocious!! Where do I begin?! It was my husband's birthday and thought the Walpack Inn would be a great place for a birthday dinner. We hadn't been here in about 2-3 years and we remember it being great. We arrived at 4pm upon opening. Light crowd, got a nice seat by a window. Beautiful interior dining room. A little chilly, but it was 20 degrees out. Still cozy. We started with ordering our kids their meals and getting a bottle of wine. My daughter's Mac n cheese off the kids menu was so gross. It was more like Mac n cheese soup. It tasted like Stouffers from the supermarket! How do you screw up a kid's meal?! Not like we remember it from a few years ago. She wouldn't eat it and we ordered her chicken fingers. I hope this wasn't a sign...unfortunately it was. The bread came and nearly crumbled in my hand. Tasted ok, but nothing special. I don't understand the fuss over their "famous" bread. My husband ordered the teriyaki ribeye. Should have been called just a ribeye. It was served on a tiny plate with green beans. The beans would fall off his plate when he cut into his steak. Crappy presentation. The steak was flavorless. The waitress swore up and down it was marinated. IT WAS NOT! Clearly it missed the bowl of marinade. Awful. Was overcooked as well. I got an end cut prime rib. I was told it would be little more done inside. I was ok with that. What they didn't tell me is I would need superior arm strength to cut through it - dry as the Sahara. The worst I've had in my life. I found it odd that you got a choice of mashed potatoes OR green beans. I've never been to a place that offers a starch or vegetable. It's always both! Some sort of weird cost saving measure I'm sure. The appetizer special of cherry peppers with smoked mozzarella was also terrible. Low grade smoked mozzarella which was not the fresh kind. It was the salty dry processed garbage kind. We couldn't even finish it. The salad bar was just ok. The lettuce leaves were not cut for a salad. Huge pieces of lettuce that were meant for rabbits, not human consumption. I shouldn't need a knife and fork to eat a salad. We complained to the manager. She offered us a dessert on the house. We got the flourless chocolate cake.....it was served on a bread plate nearly falling off it it. Then I took my fork to eat a piece and the fork wouldn't even go through the cake. At this point I thought cameras would appear and find out we were on candid camera! Not kidding. The cake was still frozen. I left to go to the car with my kids. My husband asked to speak to the manager - to make a long story short, we got the meal for free. While I appreciate that, we won't be back. read more

Beautiful restaurant at least for me, chandeliers are made of Deer antlers, there's gorgeous family style tables with live edge wood... But I digress, getting to the food. It was very American style, they start you off with choice of salad and fresh baked bread, which is btw UH-Mazing! Especially if you are coming from long day of apple picking. We all ordered steaks which were cooked perfectly. I ordered the seafood combo and I was a little disappointed. The salmon was basically tasteless, very bland, the scallops and the shrimp were also poorly seasoned. Another piece of criticism would be to spruce up their side dishes. All you get with your steak is small scoop of mash and some boiled baby carrots... Not the type of sides you give a 5 star review for. All the steak/seafood dishes come with those mediocre sides so I can't say it's only for my order. If they fix that then I would give them 5 stars for sure! The bread is as good as you've heard. They've made it the same way since the 40's. My wife and I started at the bar, had some bread, and the grilled garlic shrimp. The shrimp were good and a nice accompaniment to our beer and wine. For dinner, she had the onion soup and the salad bar. I have the fresh broiled seafood. The soup was delicious! Seafood was good. Scallops were the best. Shrimp also very good. Cod tasted fresh and was cooked well. The salad bar is solid - fresh lettuce, broccoli, onions, croutons, beats, bacon, olives, peppers, radishes, assorted dressings, sunflower seeds, and more. We will definitely be back. Had dinner with friends at a restaurant I've been going to for over 30 years. Worked in restaurants and hotels over 40 years. My dinner in December was the worst experience I've had in years. What happened to this place? When a horrible meal eas presented to our server, she threw it in a buss pan and said that happens. A $57.00 rib eye totally inedible. My wife asked that I not bring it to the kitchen. You couldn't pay me to go back. I spent literally thousands of dollars there including rehearsal dinners and anniversary parties. First time visitors yesterday. View is as gorgeous as the website photos suggest. Staff is absolutely lovely and do not rush patrons through their meals which was such a nice change especially on a holiday (Mother's Day.) Bartender mixes a nice strong cocktail. Prime rib was humongous and their homemade bread is worthy of its stellar reputation. My only feedback is that I wish the prime rib was a bit more seasoned/tasty and my fruit pie a touch sweeter. First I would like to say I have been coming to this restaurant for over 40yrs! I celebrated my 60th Birthday with my daughter and it was a disaster! Hostesses was not accommodating when it came to seating with a reservation with a window which I called for hours earlier! In addition our sides were decided for me? A large group of us stopped here for lunch on a Sunday - it opens at 1. Log cabin feel with some cool, stuffed hunted animals all around. Place is really big. Menu is limited to lots of meat and a little pricey. It's kid friendly and the server we had was great. It was really hot out and we were seated in the glass house sort of area (which seems like it would be awesome in the fall but not so much in the summer). It was very warm and the AC could not keep up with the heat. The food was pretty darn good - burgers weren't cooked a requested however they were very flavorful. They don't have fries (really?) and their baked potato's were a subpar alternative. The salad bar was weak. $10 for wilted lettuce and some veggies which looked really sorry. Check before you add it on. If you are expecting a reasonable lunch (only day of the week they serve it and there is no special lunch menu), expect to pay dinner prices... Not rushing to go back, although during the fall the view must be nice. read more

"We Feed the Deer... and the People Too." Yesterday, May 29th, 2022, my family and I went to Walpack Inn for a birthday dinner. This has been the norm for us for over 20 years. The Walpack Inn has been one of our main go-to restaurants for special occasions or just a night out. We went there for the delicious food, reasonable prices, the capable and kind service, the tranquil atmosphere, the animals inside the restaurant and, of course, the animals outside the restaurant that would come and join you for dinner or lunch. Over the years, my family and I have collected many pictures of bears and deer that have wandered up to the inn while we ate. And when there were no animals to admire, we would gaze at the breathtaking view of the open fields and tall mountains through the wall of windows that stretch the full length of the restaurant. Those who now manage the inn have made changes to fit their image instead of maintaining the signature rustic ambience that made it so extraordinarily special. The uniqueness that attracts both people and animals has been washed away and replaced with loud concerts and dining tables out back where the animals used to dine; a serene painting-like landscape meant to be peacefully enjoyed and not to be rudely interrupted by loud music and the chatter of people. The disappointing and overpriced food, generic service and the shell of a once-great restaurant is now all that remains. When someone takes over a restaurant, it is understandable they should want to make it their own, but taking the core characteristics that people have loved so much for so many decades and destroy them is something I cannot comprehend. The inn is a place that sings of local history and rural, woodsy charm. Replacing that with contemporary ideas does not work. Walpack Inn is a restaurant in the middle of the forest, off the beaten path that people happily journeyed to because of the things that are now gone. There is nothing special remaining. There is now a 2 hour time limit enforced on every table regardless of party size or busyness. You will receive a text encouraging you to turn your phone on airplane mode. A $15-20 burger or sandwich with no side is now what you get on a Sunday afternoon... unless you add on the salad bar for a modest $12 per person. And don't go there thirsty because you have to pay full price for each drink refill you request. I can understand the current inflation crisis, but this is a bit extreme. In all the years I have been going to the inn, I have never seen the place less than full. I don't know if it is because it was so early or because it was Memorial Day weekend, but I did take notice that more than 50% of the tables were open and no lines waiting for seating. I hope that one day soon, those in charge will realize the error they have made and will return the Walpack Inn to its former glory. There was nothing to fix because it was not broken. read more

The Walpak Inn. I had heard a lot about this place and was excited to give it a try, but unfortunately was disappointed. They had a sign on the entrance that anyone entering must be vaccinated, but no one was checking. The place was very busy with little chance to social distance, so any unvaccinated person could infect many people. Now the food. They specialize in oysters. I had 6 assorted. They were well prepared and delicious. Both our house salads were very good, but my wife's pasta was tasteless. (They refunded us the cost of this meal). My prime rib of beef was just ok, but not up to par with other places that specialize in quality meat and a good 25% of the serving was a huge chunk of fat. I think of the advertised 14 oz. steak, what was edible was maybe 8 oz. They had a very marginal choice of wine by the glass. Pretty much only one vineyard per type of wine. Quite disappointing. Lastly, it was so dark inside that my wife had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu. read more

Walpack Inn is a true hidden gem - hidden to some but not to many who have come back to this weekend only (Fri Sat Sun) place. Huge log cabin with rustic interior, fireplace, nice bar and greenhouse dining room. Excellent prime rib and many other things. Special house bread which is a food class in itself, very nice service and reasonable prices for the quality and quantity. The blueberry pie can't be missed. Nor should the walk out back in many many acres of wilderness bordered area just west of the Kittatiny mountain range. And only an hour and a bit more from NY. Very remote location hard to believe you're in NJ and close to Stokes State Forest and Dingmans Falls in Pennsylvania. Highly recommended. read more
