Great inn in town! We stayed here in the first week of June in '22. A very nice, old, and storied inn. Our room was on the second floor. Crazy staircase, narrow and curving. Roomy room. Very clean. Good large and clean bathroom too. Great breakfast in the common room in the morning. Oatmeal, fruit, and coffee. What more could you ask for?! We met a few really nice folks too, and had great conversation over coffee. Superb location, right in town. We rotate our week in town each year, but we'd absolutely come back to the JCH - we need to see that ghost! No negatives whatsoever. read more

I stay at this hotel frequently and I can safely say, I love it! The best part about it is the staff! Great people. Always accommodating and they treat me like family. I just say it's Mr. Dan whenever I call them and they know who I am. This is a very old building so don't expect all the fancy amenities of a brand new hotel. But do expect a fantastic atmosphere, nice rooms, great beds, soft water for the shower... (Yes there is Wi-Fi, and nice choices available for breakfast.) read more

Stayed at the Daniel Webster House We stayed here last year for New Years and had a great time. The location is really convenient and the rooms are nice. This year their was a new manager/front desk woman who was purposely difficult and made our stay uncomfortable. We checked in on a Sunday and arrived around 1:30pm. I knew the hotel already and saw the maid had just finished cleaning our room so I was happy to get our bags in the room and get checked in. The front desk woman was adamant about us waiting until 3:00pm to get our keys. This didn't make any sense to me and I asked the maid if she was finished with our room and she confirmed she was and already onto another room to clean. I had to ask the cleaning lady to let the front desk woman to release the room and she still wouldn't give us the keys. The whole transaction was very awkward and unnecessary and my wife had to basically take the keys from the desk?? For the next 3 days the front desk woman gave us attitude, made myself and my wife uncomfortable and we never asked for any services or tried to talk to her in any manner. This stay was a Christmas gift and I would never stay her again even if it was free. We had a great time on the island but it was almost ruined by the Hotel. David S read more

Very convenient location, our room 300 was very small, for the price I was expecting a nicer room. The furniture was way too big for the room which made it hard to even get to the other side of the bed. The hotel is very old and that is part of the appeal but we didn't have electric in our bathroom, kept blowing a fuse. Not so bad during the day but not great. The bikes were a nice perk but after biking to Madaket beach I was ready for the bus back. You might want to rent bikes if going for a long ride. This is a place where just for sleeping, and shower... don't expect a si.imple coffe/tea machine. Not in the room,not anywhere in the hotel. Room is VERY small, very small space by the sink. But the lobby does look nice. BUT that is not important to me though. I want a comfortable staywith minimumal convenience to make my own tea and coffee. This does not have it. Disappointed Not at all as it was presented in the pictures. We were so looking forward to the allure that was presented in the website description. An elegant, beautiful and historic inn, the first mansion on the island! With all due respect, this historic property needs a touch up and the historical commission needs to take note. Pro's: - Location and proximity to town, shops, restaurants. - Complimentary continental breakfast each morning. - Bicycles and beach towels available to guests. - Complimentary parking. This is a pro and a con since although complimentary, there are not enough spots to accommodate all guests. With respect, we recognize that since this is a historical property, surrounding real estate is limited. However, guests are instructed to "block-in" other cars and leave keys at front desk so that staff can shuffle cars as necessary. Con's: - Beautiful historic home but sadly in disrepair - No elevator - Cleanliness in question - Interior noise level high due to age of the building. - Parking: as mentioned above, there are not enough spots to accommodate all guests. Guests are instructed to "block-in" other cars and leave keys so that staff can shuffle cars as necessary. - On-site restaurant "Tap Room" was advertised as being available 7 days/week however when we were there we were advised that they would be closed M/Tu despite the on-site sign saying that they'd be open. Our experience: - Disappointing. - Window treatments in our room were wooden shutters. These shutters had no handles therefore making opening and shutting them to be a challenge. - Our east facing window had a window air conditioner unit in bottom half. This did not allow us to shut those wooden window shutters and therefore not allowing for privacy from the street nor shading from the early morning sun. - Our bathroom door was not able to close. There appeared to be some previous jury-rigging with some wooden blocks which prevented it from shutting. - While we understand COVID and it's staffing impacts, we were disappointed to see the same dirt and fragments on the carpeted interior stairs and hallways during our four day stay there. - We arrived two hours prior to the stated 3p check-in. Decided to see if our room was ready and if not, no problem. The front desk staff said that our room was not ready but being cleaned now and they would call us as soon as it was ready. We altered our plans accordingly, staying nearby since our room was being cleaned, as told. Two hours later, per the front desk, our room was still being cleaned and "being inspected now". Very frustrating. We lost coveted vacation time, after all. Overall, we were so looking forward to the elegance of staying here but the experience did not prove to this. This establishment might carry a status name but there are too many other Inns in the local area that an give the same/better experience. read more

In 1999, my hard-working and dedicated staff gifted me and my wife a $ 300 certificate for use at the Jared Coffin House. I remain humble and grateful to this day by their generous gesture. Ten staff each pitched in $ 30. Wow! Over the last twenty years we have made a fine reputation for ourselves - one for which we are most proud - and still humble. In turn, we led our staff to many successes - and without them - none would be possible. Q: What is $ 300 worth today in 2018 dollars? If $ 300 were held and invested by JCH, what is the return-to-date? It cost them NOTHING to fill out a post card and send it to me. They took in $ 300 cash from their kin. They gave nothing. Finally, we are able to "smell the roses" as they say so I reached out to JCH for accommodations in 2017. We hoped to stay on the island for three days, and would have done our share to spend much more than $ 300 at JCH and the local merchants, etc. Well, JCH would not honor the card - it states "expires three years from date of issue." As consumers, we all know the racket the gift card / certificate business is - with 15% or more never being redeemed by recipients. We don't like this. My hope is that anyone considering a stay at JCH - read this review - and thereby consider the lack of goodwill, honor, and fairness we experienced. In my opinion, a true hospitality professional knows just one word to their guests and that word is "YES". If the management is turning away people such as myself, how are they going to say "yes" to you during your visit? Presently, my understanding is Massachusetts law no longer permits gift cards / certificates with limits of time on their use. I may be wrong, but that is what I have read. We stayed at the Jared Coffin House as part of a vacation package. Check-in was easy enough. Our room was actually in the Harrison Gray House, another building across the street and behind the Jared Coffin House. The room was nice; not super fancy but comfortable. There were no curtains over the door to the patio, so it was very hard to sleep in. You don't go to Nantucket to sit in your room, anyway. Harrison Gray House has A/C so keep that in mind if that's important to you. They advertise free wi-fi, but it's super slow. I could hardly connect in the H-G House, if at all. Continental breakfast is included. Nothing special, just danishes and cereal. The location couldn't be beat. Just a short walk down to the wharf to catch the ferry, or watch the boats. All notable shops and restaurants are less than a 15 minute walk away. Because we were off the main street, it was quiet at night. If you get a vacation package that includes $25 gift certificates to the White Elephant Spa (a sister property), beware! The cheapest spa treatment is about $150 and you can't combine certificates. Kind of a joke, if you ask me. Overall, a fine stay. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, and I feel like we paid too much for what we got (even with the sweet online deal we scored), but it did the job. read more

My wife and I tried to stay at the Jared Coffin House, but the room was so uncomfortable we left. We are small people but neither of us could comfortably take a shower and we definitely couldn't both fit in the bathroom. There's no central air, which is fine, but the lightest rain on the window units was so loud we couldn't sleep. We were expecting a certain amount of coziness knowing that it's a historic building, but it was too much. We hoped the hotel would help us find a solution with an upgrade or a different room etc, but they weren't interested in being helpful. We had booked a non-refundable room, but after 1 night we were so miserable we changed hotels and just ate the loss. The one good thing was the 4pm apple cider. We ended up at another property owned by the same company and it was an entirely different experience. I would look elsewhere in Nantucket. read more

My husband and I just returned form the most wonderful vacation at the Jared Coffin House. The hotel is lovely. It is an old historic house that has been expanded and turned into a hotel. The rooms are comfortable and decorated in keeping with the historic feel of the house and Nantucket. The house is walking distance from the ferries and right in the middle of town, so it is very convenient. The desk and door staff were friendly and very helpful. The hotel was spotless. Highly recommended. Check Expedia for deals; we were able to get a room for less than half price. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here in October. It's located in "downtown" Nantucket, which is great if you don't have a car because you can walk to everything. The staff is really friendly and helpful. They provide bottle water upon request and continental breakfast from 7-10am. I went on a run one of the days we were there and I didn't know where to go, but one of the desk staff helped me plan a route and drew it on a map for me. Our room was nice. It has an area rug with wooden floors, a flat screen TV and nice, "antique" wall paper. Definitely has a homey feel. There was a window unit AC in our room. Since it was October, we didn't use it but if you come here in the summer, you will not die of heat in your room. The shower has great pressure (something that became important to me when I moved to NYC) and there's always hot water. Overall, the place is clean and historically beautiful. My wife and I stayed here to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary and were completely satisfied. The innkeeper Paula and her entire staff went out of their way to make us feel special at every turn. Their suggestions and helpful hints went a long way to making our experience a special one. We were give a free upgrade to a room with a king size bed because it was our anniversary. We were greeted with a card and delicious chocolates, just the type of small things that make a stay memorable. The room was immaculate with wonderful shampoos and lotions. Don't forget to try the robes! Breakfast was simple but complete with excellent bagels, buns, cereal and coffee. We stayed at this historic hotel for three nights, and by the end of the third night, we were very ready to leave. The rooms are small and awkward, as well as the bathrooms, (unless you pay for a ridiculously priced suite). The breakfast was a joke, little plastic wrapped, stale pastries with tubs of peanut butter and jelly??? What, at this type of Inn? Even in COVID times, it was pathetic, the last Inn we stayed in on the Cape at least had home made pastries and muffins, the Jared Coffin House has their own kitchen!! The clientele is beyond pretentious, and the poor staff seemed over it all, can't say I blame them by the way the older, entitled clientele treated them. The atmosphere was stuffy and outdated. There are so many wonderful Inns, hotels, rentals to stay in around Nantucket, I won't waste any more time, nor money here. The Tap room was okay, generic and no atmosphere. The servers were over it as well, I don't know, I'd keep looking for another Inn. Don't recommend at all. read more

PROS: Great friendly staff, the place is clean all the time, it has a very antique-looking atmosphere, the rugs, wallpapers, lightning, paints, furniture. CONS: There is no control over the room temperature, my room was uncomfortably hot most of the time, even with the window open. You can hear everything... I couldn't sleep well enough because of all the TV noises, people snoring, people walking and talking. I've just returned from a superb weekend excursion from Nantucket and I have to compliment the staff at the Jared Coffin House (our room was actually in the Gray House) for making the time we spent with them cozy to the max. Obviously when you're on the island you aren't there to sit in your room but while my boyfriend and I were there we were absolutely content. The bed was fluffy and cozy, our room was extremely spacious with a large main bedroom, a huge dressing area and an adequately sized bathroom. The decor was shabby chic and a bit quaint but each night after a long day of playing, eating, and drinking I fell into bed and slept like the dead. I'll definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends, especially since it's perfectly located to downtown and walking distance to almost everything. By the way, we didn't have any problems with the wireless. PS: Even the water at the hotel felt more luxurious than at home. My hair definitely looked better in Nantucket than in Boston ha ha ... read more

Stayed here and had a great trip. It was late December and the island was almost deserted which gave an almost surreal feeling. It snowed onto the cobblestone streets as the cool northeast winds blew in. Our room overlooked the street. Room was charming and quaint with a comfortable bed and older style timey tasteful furnishings. I would go back and would reccomend this place for sure! Front desk was awesome. read more

I've stay at the Jared Coffin many times over the past 40 years and I 'm sorry to say the public rooms have fallen from their high standards, gone are the lovely breakfasts in the designated Breakfast Room, now the restaurant "Prime" moves in from their outdoor dining venue to that space when the weather turns cold. They have also changed the decor of that particular room to something that is down right gloomy, the hotel has tried for the contemporary look but it just doesn't quite fit. They now have "breakfast" in the living room in which you are offered cold and not very fresh pastries, a cold bagel is not appealing nor are the cold croissants, they do have some plastic cups of yogurt and a bowl of canned fruit. The coffee however is so good it almost makes up for it being in a paper cup. There is no place to eat breakfast unless you are perched on the sofa, trying not to leave a coffee ring on the coffee table or crumbs on the upholstery, it no longer invites guests to linger and chat with fellow guests. The Jerad is now part of a corporation of a half dozen other accommodations on the island, the service is no longer the same, if you ask for a dining recommendation they will most likely recommend one of their own. When you reserve your room, look at the rooms online decide which you want but then call for your reservation being specific about what you want, ask about Sq. footage, or if you want a front or back room, in the Main house or the annex. I wanted the same room we had about 13 years ago while on our honeymoon it the the front corner on the second floor, this was very important because we are older seniors and climbing stairs are difficult. When I was given the key however we discovered we were on the third floor and in a room half the size, it was a blatant "bait and switch" and according to the Internet site the room was even $40.00 a night cheaper, the room was up front in the corner but it didn't have a fireplace or sofa. I went back down to the receptionist and was set to fuss a bit but other guests were starting to come in and I'm sure she didn't want them hearing what I was fussing about so she gave me the room I originally paid for (in advance, I might add), other than that our stay was enjoyable. The Jared's location at the head of Center Street puts it in the best location in town, not to mention it possesses that treasure that hardly any other inn has called a...... parking lot! read more

I made reservations via hotels.com for a single room. The reservation rules for my reservation stated that I would not be charged until I checked out. Well, the hotel charged me in full before I even arrived without my knowledge. Hotel information on hotels.com was confusing stating "Room amenities most room have AC fresh baked pastries coffee and tea cable tv wireless internet-fee." Well, when I arrived the temperature that day was well over 90 degree and my room had no REPEAT no AC!!! It was super small...no pun intended..but reminded me of a coffin!! It had a single bed no bigger than a twin and space to walk past it with a dresser. A TV mounted on the wall.. and one window that faced the building...no view...and more importantly no airculation...breeze!!! NADA!!! It was horrible. They put in a space fan that did nothing but blow hot air around and it was clogged with a ton of white dust and the oscillation function was broken. The bathroom was tiny with just a shower stall. I liked the English tolietries...but that is about it. Climb up two flights of stairs...room 409 right off staircase with bed against hallway..heard all noise from hallyway and staircase. The hotel said they were sold out so I suffered one sleepless night sweating. The next day I explained how miserable I was and they finally agreed to upgrade me to a better room for Sunday night. I was packing my bags in my room when I received a call from the front desk that essentially reneged on the upgrade and said I would have to pay extra. I said I was very unhappy and just wanted to leave. They argued with me and made me miserable finally giving me a credit for Sunday night (since they already charged me!!!) once I was throughly upset. Then the manager present said she hoped that I would return again!!! I quickly departed happy to be getting out of there. Hospitality was completely lacking. read more

The best thing about this B&B is the location, which is pretty much perfect. It's close to everything. The daily breakfast is nice too. The place is very clean and the service is excellent. However, I had to take off a lot of points because the room is exceptionally small. As well, each night the smell of food from the kitchen came into our room. I wouldn't mind staying here again if I had to but I'd rather look elsewhere. read more

Paula at the front desk was amazing, offered great suggestions for sight seeing and restaurants and is super fast at problem solving! Now for the downfalls: wi-fi was next to impossible to connect to and stay connected. No elevator, so Paula had to change around rooms for one person in our travel party. Dinner Thursday night 8/22/19 - the food was good, steak and fish to order - however the bread way ruined by excessively salty butter- as was the Halibut dish, steak fine but the evening was also ruined by the surly attitude of their waitress. Given the number of fine restaurants within 100 yards- I would not recommend - after all these years - seem the White Elephant group is still a work in progress as far as the Jared Coffin !!! read more

Stayed here with my boyfriend over New Year's Eve week for 3 cozy and relaxing nights. As it is off-season, the main house is closed, so we are staying in the Daniel Webster house. We were greeted at the small front desk when we arrived, given our key cards, and told where to find the driveway to park my car (located right behind the inn). The room is comfortable and spacious and the bed is heavenly! The building is very homey and there are lots of great Nantucket books around to peruse. Wifi is free and fast. Breakfast is modest- coffee, juice, tea, bagels, and cereal. Bottled water is available at the front desk. The inn centrally located in town, near some terrific bars and restaurants. Visited here with my wife on her birthday weekend and found it very delightful. It is centrally located and within walking distance to most everything on the island. You can walk to a variety of shops and locations and even the beaches found nearby. The staff is the very definition of the term professional and the one minor glitch we had in our room was very quickly fixed. I wasn't very impressed with the breakfast. While I find most places advertise continental breakfasts when it's not much more than a few bagels and coffees this is just not a great attribute and would advise you not to make this a deciding factor. But all in all it is a great place to visit and I strongly suggest it! read more

We go to Nantucket every year and rent a house. This was the first time staying in a hotel downtown. I have walked past this property and have dined at the restaurant several times in the past, but this was the first time going inside. The buidling is beautiful. The staff was great. Friendly, warm, accomodating and very helpful. When leaving or entering the property the staff greeted you by name each time. The room we had was quaint and cozy. The location can't be beat. The front desk reception and bellman were great. I was tired and they offered me water as soon as I got to the desk. The room was nice and clean--small but fairly priced for Nantucket in August. One chair in the room and a little noisy on ground floor of Daniel Webster House--but the staff was very accommodating. Computers in two easy to get to locations--helped me a great deal! No need to bring my laptop. Overall--for Nantucket this was a great, walk to everything in town location. Value is fair for August. The place was full. Lovely heritage and friendly staff. Continental breakfast was bagels, kashi cereal, juice and coffee. Good to have that in the place and a good bakery steps away if you choose something sweeter. Enjoyed the place, even though I balked at the price initially. After looking around it was in reason with the other hotels of similar status. read more

I wrote a review yesterday which I am leaving below since it describes my interactions with one of the managers as well as details the single rooms. However, it was only fair to update my review since the general manager Mike (as opposed to the manager I spoke with last night named Paula) did an above board job making things right. He initiated a call to me in the morning since the front desk host left a message for him about my situation. He offered me a room upgrade, which is positively delightful. The new room has three windows, one facing the harbor and two facing a side street leading to Main. Excellent for people watching and for getting a cross-breeze if one desires. The restaurant is directly beneath the window, so there is music and talking that one can hear, but it is not troublesome. So, I would recommend Jared Coffin House based on the excellent service and staff, with the caveat that the single rooms should probably be avoided if possible. ___________________________________________________________________________________ The staff at the front desk are wonderful, as are the staff I encountered in various other places around the hotel, which is the only reason this is not a one star. I am a room which is so small there is not space to open a suitcase without putting it on the bed. There is no chair. There is certainly no desk. The closet is maybe 2ft wide. There is a small window that faces a brick wall. To reach the window AC unit, one must actually climb over the bed because there is barely space between the end of the bed and the wall to shimmy around to it. The same is true for the dresser. It is possible to stand up and open the dresser drawers at the same time, but one's legs will be against the bed and it's more comfortable to do sitting on the bed. There was no indication on their website that the room was this small, nor were there pictures. I rechecked before leaving negative feedback. It is described as "intimate." I am a bit claustrophobic. I could have handled a small room, so long as it didn't face a brick wall. I could have handled seeing a brick wall if the room hadn't been both small and full of furniture. I was told I could pay an extra $350 a night to upgrade to a larger room. I asked if I could receive a refund and simply cut my vacation short. Only if they sold the other five rooms they have sitting empty would they consider a refund. So, my take away from this is that they are perfectly happy for me to actually have a panic attack sitting in a tiny room, that was not advertised as tiny before I arrived, while they have five large rooms sitting empty. If I don't like it, I can either absorb three nights of an expensive room and go home or I can pay an additional $1050 to get a room that will not send me over the edge. The front staff are wonderful. They offer complimentary water. I can't say they are hospitable, because there is nothing hospitable about their enforcement of policy regarding refunds and/or upgrades. The downstairs area, where I am spending as much time as possible since the room itself truly is anxiety producing, is lovely. As for the building itself, there is a 'servant stairway' that has paint chips and crumbled bits of wall on it that is a few feet away from the main staircase. This experience turned what had been a lovely vacation until the Jared Coffin House entered he equation on it's head. I will be in the area frequently over the next few years and was fully intending to schedule future dates to stay on upcoming trips, expecting to have a good experience. What an unpleasant surprise. Needless to say, I do not intend to book here again. read more
