Upon entering one first notices the atmosphere. Its very private and secluded feeling. Dimly lit with a dark woody interior. I first ordered a moscow mule. It wasnt the best. The ginger beer used is a bit too strong and overpowers the rest of it. It took a while to get my steak and shrimp but it was worth the wait. The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The shrimp was fried and breaded well. I didnt ask, but i think its beer battered. It produces somewhat of an odd smell in the back of ones nose when chewing but the tatse and texture was excellent. The fried okra was a little undercooked but was also breaded and fried very well. Overall a great place to eat and converse but perhaps a bit expensive. Too be fair i did order one of the more expensive dishes and i had my server put a double shot in my cocktail. Speaking of server the bar tender was excellent. This is one of my favorite places to eat and drink in San Angelo (along with Peasant Village). We usually like to start off at Happy Hour in the bar area and then end up eating in there. Kristen and Jason always do a fabulous job of making sure we are taken care of. Some of the best servers in town... Now for the food! Let me say that this is one of the most consistent places around. Everything from the blackened salmon/redfish to the steaks are always cooked perfectly. I've never had anything here that wasn't beyond delicious. Thursday, December 5th: Just ate at the wharf tonight. Spent $59 on Lobster and Steak. The lobster was overcooked and this made it like rubber. The steak was supposed to be a rib eye. We specifically asked for a rib eye. It was not a rib eye and was dry and not cooked to order. Poor quality beef and not marbled like a rib eye should be with good flavor. It was not seasoned. We had to add salt and pepper just to get some flavor. I asked my waitress about the steak and she acted like there was nothing that she could do about it. Spent just over $82 on the ticket. Gosh, I could have had a fair to decent rib eye at Texas Roadhouse for much less. Wife was curious about this place so we went for our 10th wedding anniversary. The outside is in need of repair in appearance and the inside is outdated, trendy, only if you remember the 1980s. They want to be known as a steak house but they serve substandard beef that is akin to an old, dried out sponge. Very, very, very disappointing... read more

4.5 Heres why.... I come here on special occasions, Dates,etc. This restaurant has been consistent and its clean. From my seat I had a clear view into not only kitchen but could see the dishwasher. The restaurant is clean and staff is attentive and friendly. The food is good the steaks may be small but they are cooked great and seasoned well. Like any other restaurants they have their ups and downs. But for me The Warf still remains a nice place to eat seafood and enjoy a good meal. Is it cheap? NO. Is it good? YES. Its rare to find a restaurant that is clean and serves good food. If you had a bad experience try again. This is one if the few places in San Angelo that TRIES and comes through with a good experience. read more

Not sure what I was expecting from a seafood place that isn't anywhere close to the water. Was hungry and needed to find a place for dinner while in San Angelo for a work trip. Nothing really stood out that sounded appetizing on the menu. When the waitress returned to the table, we asked what they were famous for and she didn't even really have an answer. Luckily it prompted her to tell us about their fresh fish specials which are not listed on the menu. The fish tasted good but nothing special. read more

So we get there with our 4 month old to find out there are no changing tables so they have me change my daughter on a box. We ordered our food and my filet was completely bland so as I waited for the server Kassidy to come back I grazed on my baked potato. Eventually we had to grab a different server to go find ours (which we had to do a total of 5 times because she'd never come back and our drinks were completely empty). We had to ask for a high chair 2x. I told our server I'd like something else they took off the steak but charge me FIVE dollars for the baked potato it was awful service, the server very clearly didn't want to be there. The wharf is Angelo's "higher end" restaurant. It was good. Not incredible. We had Calamari, peel and eat shrimp, Cajun bites. For entree we had ahi tuna and rice pilaf. Again, good but not incredible. They were busy so maybe it was just an off night. Waitress was frazzled and forgot many things over course of night. Found this place to be a little discombobulated and maybe understaffed. Again, maybe an off night. Would try again but would like to see them up their game a bit for what they are offering as premier dining. Bartender was on point though! This place is a diamond in the rough. I'm a big foodie and was fortunate enough to come across this restaurant in a smaller Texas town. For the area, this is a very good restaurant. Had fresh King Crab which is not easy to find deep in the heart of Texas (). Their fine wines cannot be matched in the area- trust me, as I am a wine collector. Don't listen to the other poor reviews and enjoy this restaurant with your friends and family. Poor reviewers are probably people that prefer chain restaurants and cheap house wine (if they can even afford it). I am an avid cook (duck confit, Sherry risotto are my personal specialties) and eat out in fine dining restaurants quite often in Houston. I have a refined pallate. Bad is still bad. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this place. I did think it was funny that another reviewer wanted to say something witty, he got half-way there, about my review only to mention he had steak. Why, when there are great steakhouses in town did he go to the Uppity and crudtastic seafood joint for his steak? Most people around here think seafood means catfish. The servers were HORRIBLE the Friday we went and their vaunted wine knowledge seemed to be a google search instead of an actual knowledgeable server. When ordering wine it felt more like buying a car and the salesman going to "ASK" his manager and did not inspire confidence. Go at your own risk. Now there are several improved choices in Angelo and hopefully we will see this cliched dinosaur go away soon. Not sure why this does not get better reviews, but my wife and I had a very enjoyable experience. Sure, the place could use a renovation, but we had no complaints about the food. The staff was very friendly, courteous, and at tentative. The appetizer, breaded oysters, was prepared just right. I had the clam chowder and my wife had a Caesar salad. Both were excellent. I had the fresh grilled salmon with asparagus, and my wife had grilled shrimp with rice pilaf. Both were prepared as you would expect them to be. Overall, a very enjoyable evening for my wife and I. For my 24 years in this little city, The Wharf has been a place where life moments have been celebrated. Birthdays, our anniversary, kids' graduations, etc. I love it for that reason. But to me, the food has been inconsistent through the years. We always start out in the little bar area . . .a favorite. And work our way to the main dining room area for dinner, as we did last night. So let's cut to the chase regarding our experience. Good bartender. Ok waiter. Fantastic house salad dressing. My husband's beer battered shrimp was good. (The shrimp, cooked any way, tends to be a safe choice always.) My tuna steak was WAY overcooked/dry despite me ordering it medium rare. I had about 5 to 6 small, overcooked stalks of asparagus as a disappointing side. It just seems like The Wharf hasn't evolved. Nothing exciting to surprise the palette. It's basically the exact same menu it was 24 years ago. The exact same interior as well. Yes,we will continue to go there a few times during the year just because . . .and as we always run into friends we haven't seen in a while. I just can't shake the feeling of it's impending doom. It was late, after 9:00 pm so we didn't know if we could get a good dinner but boy were we surprised. We checked in at The Rodeway Hotel and they recommended The Wharf which was adjacent to the hotel. It is a uniquely decorated restaurant with very friendly staff. I had the coconut shrimp, baked potato and clam chowder. My husbands had the regular fried shrimp and salad. It was all delicious and generous portions . I initially posted this back in March, but apparently didn't post it. So here it is: My birthday was on Saturday, so I thought I'd go out for dinner. I wanted to go to the Wharf because I hadn't been there in a while. First, Terry Nolan needs to remodel his restaurant, if not a total remodel, then at least an update to the lighting. It's quite dim in there, and hard to see what you're eating. I know it's supposed to be "ambiance", but ambiance only goes so far. I like to see what's on my plate. Now for the food: I ordered the Hawaiian chicken with a salad and sweet potato fries. The salad wasn't lettuce, it was field greens. In my opinion, field greens are not salad. The chicken didn't look like a fresh chicken breast, it looked like it was initially frozen. The grill marks were just too perfect. The pineapple on top tasted strange, maybe because it was topped with some kind of bell pepper mixture. Bell peppers don't go with pineapple. The chicken itself was bland and really didn't have any flavor, it wasn't seasoned at all. The sweet potato fries were good, but how do you screw up fries anyway? For dessert I had the banana fosters pie, which was excellent, pretty much the best part of my meal. Overall, it was a decent meal, but that's about it. Certainly nothing special. First things first; excellent food. I had the Hawaiian chicken breast and it was deliciously succulent with no grizzle. Asparagus was cooked just right, and the Caesar salad was just what you'd expect from a Caesar salad. They make lots of things in house, including cutting their own steaks, some salad dressings etc The atmosphere was very nice and walking in with a t shirt and shorts I felt under dressed and almost asked about a dress code ( then I remembered I was in San Angelo ). My only complaint was my waitress. She wasn't very good at her job. She gave me my salad before she got my water to me. My water was gone when she brought me my entrée, and by the time she made it back to refill it I had already finished my dinner. However I am certain that she is an exception. As I was jealous of other customers; listening to their waiters talking to their tables, being charismatic and explicating what felt like genuine feelings of actually caring about their tables. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone, and if I'm ever back in San Angelo I will assuredly come back! read more

I've been here many times. Mostly it's a good place to eat. This last time was something else. First off though I'll say our wait person Nikkie was awesome. My date ordered the Crab cakes which were really tasty. I ordered steak and shrimp. I wanted the steak cooked medium rare to the rare side and the shrimp sauteed. Neither one of these is very difficult. The steak came out well done and the shrimp were like shoe leather. I showed the steak to Nikki and she agreed it was way overdone so she took it back for another one. I ate the shrimp to avoid be "that guy". The second steak came out seared on the outside and absolutely raw on the inside. Once again, I ate it so I wouldn't be "that guy". This is supposed to be one of the Top Quality restaurants in San Angelo. I will go back at some point, but I'm not sure if I can trust them with a simple steak and shrimp anymore. The Wharf is my favorite seafood restaurant. Every meal I have had here has been excellent. I enjoy my fish blackened and they have done an excellent job whether it has been snapper, tilapia or the catch of the day. Terry and Janelle Nolan go out of their way to make your visit to their restaurant a wonderful experience. One of the highlights to The Wharf is their collection of wine. Take time to peruse the collection and you are sure to find a wine to your liking from a California Chardonnay or Cabernet to a Chilean Shiraz or Argentinian Malbec. If you are unsure of what wine goes with a particular dish, be sure to ask Terry for his recommendation. Finally, save room for dessert. All desserts are "homemade" at the restaurant and while my husband loves the chocolate cake. I prefer the creme brûlée. read more

My husband and I are fairly new to San Angelo, and we love sea food. We finally got to go, and the bar was the best part of the place! We were told up front- " We are out of prime rib and oysters on the half shell." Ok, they weren't on the menus anyway- So we ordered steak and shrimp- The steak had no flavor and was tough. The shrimp was not seasoned either. Then at the table next to ours a couple was offered oysters on the half shell and they got them. So I guess they pick and choose who gets what. "Come on knock on our door - we'll be waiting for you" Those lines are going to be rolling through your head as you enter the Wharf's bar, a Regal Beagle flashback, which isn't at all bad. The short wooden chairs, sunken bar, and matching blue Laz-y-Boy recliners all added to the unintentional kitschy yet comfortable ambiance while we waited to be seated. Drinks were good and (another plus) they didn't scrimp on the chardonnay, filling our glasses nearly to the top. Screw you wine etiquette! Once seated we ordered the coconut shrimp, jalapeno cream soup, potato, rice and some fresh trout. The soup was great. Creamy with just enough pepper flavor to make it interesting. My trout was ok although it was baked just a bit too long. Next time I'd probably ask to have the fish blackened or cooked another way. The coconut shrimp was huge and frankly could have fed the two of us. It also seemed to be cooked just a little too long (extra hot oil?). Still very appetizing, but don't know if I'd get the same dish next time. We'll be returning to the Wharf to try some of the other items and more importantly, to track down Larry during happy hour. read more

Downgrading my earlier rating by a star. Nothing has changed much here in years, but I still haven't found anything on the menu that calls to me to return. Previously I said that they have the best seafood in San Angelo in an earlier review. This may have been an overstatement but then again there really arent many options. This last visit included two disappointments. The first was the entree, shrimp scampi, which was way over-cooked. This turned the smallish shrimp to rubber. It was also flavorless. Scampi shouls be a rich, buttery, garlicy, dish with a salty paremesan crust. This version is just over-cooked shrimp drowned in a tasteless sauce that may or may not have had garlic and cheese melted in it somewhere. No taste. I ordered the baked potato with butter only. It was ok, but served with all of the toppings I didn't want. It took a while to get the order to the table so I didn't complain. This is not an outrageously over priced restaurant, but prices are a little high for the quality level of the servings. read more
