This place is great. Proof that you can't judge a book by its cover. It's cozy inside, the bar area has several TV's to watch sporting events while you drink and eat. There sea food is great and is very fresh for a restaurant that is a good distance from any ocean. The wine selection is pretty good. Try the fried oysters for a starter. The service here is atrocious. For the "fine dining experience" they advertise, the staff does a poor job of upholding the minimum standard. We frequent this restaurant for the delicious food, and it is delicious. The three star rating is all attributed to the food. One would think that being regulars would help out our experience, instead our waitress last night avoided us at all costs, didn't mention the fresh fish options (biggest money maker therefore upping your tip potential) and by the end of the evening, was straight-up rude. We came here for date night not too long ago. I'm originally from the coast of Washington, so I take my seafood pretty seriously. I don't expect much here in San Angelo, so I was pleasantly surprised by the fish they had. We both had the catfish, lightly fried. Fish and chips, essentially. While the Wharf has many great employees Kristen is one that stands above the rest . Whether you are having drinks or dinner she can handle a bar full of customers all by herself. I have been a customer for over 25 years and I have watched employees come and go but Kristen stands out above them all . Interesting place. Not much to look at on the outside, but once your in, its a quaint little place. This is a local favorite for sure, however the food was average at best. Probably the best seafood you will find in town (outside of the national chains). On an interesting note, they have fresh seafood, however you do not see it on the menu. I love The Wharf because it brings back memories of growing up in San Angelo. If you're not a local, you probably won't get it - just beware, it's dark and low key dank. I love the food and always will - the clam chowder and fried shrimp are always my go tos. I remember going here as a child on very special occasions it was called Pelican's Wharf then it was great. I went here last year for my birthday wanting something special and was not impressed. The commercials on the radio make your mouth water but the end product is so-so. In my opinion it was not worth the money that was spent. Red Lobster is better since there is not much of a selection here in SA. read more

I lived in San Angelo for four years and this was our GO TO spot for date night. The steak is delicious, the catfish is delicious, the cream of jalapeno soup is delicious, the shrimp cocktail is delicious. The salmon is of good quality but I wasn't pleased with some of the glazes and toppings they have for it- some were a little too sweet for my taste, but the salmon was cooked to perfection! The dessert there is amazing, but be careful because they are HUGE portions! It is great if you have someone to share with! I have heard some other people in their reviews mention Red Lobster- if that is the quality of food they are used to, no wonder they don't appreciate ACTUAL food! I have been to the Red Lobster and have NEVER had a good experience there or tasted anything NEAR as good as The Wharf. I have had only ONE bad experience at The Wharf in the 4 years of going there regularly, the steak was warm on the outside and cool in the center when I asked for medium- which should be a warm center. I spoke with our waitress, she immediately took it away and brought back a steak with a warm center (I am sure they just heated up the same steak) but regardless it was still delicious! My family moved to San Angelo from San Antonio and were pleasantly suprised to find The Wharf. It is a nice quiet place to go for older couples and this is one of the reasons we like it. The service has always been good, and the food is tasty. As some others have mention it needs a new carpet, but that is a mild distraction. We stopped going to Red Lobster, with it's fast food, rush you in, rush you out service with the same food you get at a RL no matter the location. The Wharf is more slow paced and there is no rush to get you out the door. If you drink wine, they have an extensive wine list to choose from. As others have noted, this is San Angelo, not San Francisco or Baltimore. I feel it is an unfair comparison to gauge the food at the Wharf with locations that obviously have an edge on a fresh catch of the day. We have many too Tex-Mex places here, this is a nice change read more

Had to correct the perception that this place is anything but delicious, friendly, and serves fresh and homemade food. I've watched them make their tall dessert pies, and know their seafood is flown in. This is a comfortable "joint", no fine china and silver. Just good food in a cozy atmosphere. Their only failure in all their years was their odd decision to suddenly start using oil lights on the tables instead of unscented candles. All you could smell was burning oil, not food, very off-putting. They came to their senses and corrected this, though, no more oil lights; all is as before. Non-iceberg lettuce salads, with unique greens, homemade croutons, and the best house dressing in west Texas. We don't order catfish here, we always order their ocean fish, which is always perfectly cooked, and generous portions. Where else in town do you have fresh swordfish, amberjack, yellowfin, etc? Plus, they were the first in town, years ago, to introduce microbrews to the Bud-drinking, closed-minded locals. Make no mistake; if you don't want frozen or microwaved junk, this is the place for you. Savor and enjoy! read more

My husband, a family friend and I went last Friday around 5 (when they open). We have gone here before and it was only so-so as in some reviews posted here. I have to say that this visit was so much better. I do not know if it was because of the time we went- was not nearly as busy as it would have been at say 7- or if it was because of our amazing waiter, but this experience blew most restaurants in San Angelo out of the water. We each had salad, mine with a raspberry dressing, and it was amazing! I am not much for anything in my salad however, as there was a bunch of cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. but I know a lot of people like that. We all ordered the same, catfish, and my husband and I shared the plate. It came with two very large filets of catfish, beautifully breaded to perfection! I can say that sharing it was a perfect choice, as our friend was stuffed. My husband and I were feeling like dessert so we ordered the mud pie. This.was.heaven!!! Layers of oreo, chocolate ice cream and whipped cream this dessert might just top the cookie monster at Cheddar's! We had a great time, great food, and wonderful service! read more

We dined here a couple nights ago and had the worst customer service that I've had in a while. All of our courses took a long time but we were out with another couple having drinks and talking so no biggie. I ordered prime rib blackened rare, they told me it would be medium rare, no problem. It comes out well done, the waitress takes it back. She brings me back my fries and asks if I'd like something else because the prime was all over cooked. Honestly my heart was set on the prime rib, I told her that I understood and that I would be fine without. When she brings the check they charged me $6 for my cup of soup and side of fries that came with the steak they overcooked. I only ate half of the soup to save room for the steak I never ate. Congrats you just lost my business forever because cheating me out of $6 was that important to you. Our tab was $45 for my wife and I without the prime rib, so we were being cheap. read more

Food was over priced for the quality. We were hoping for a nice meal with my parents and we all ordered something different and none of it was good. Rice was bland, fish was small portions for the price and was very thin and dry and bake potatoes were dry and crispy. Service was also very slow. It took 15 min to get Drinks 30 for salads and over an hour for meals. We also had our kids with us, first they had no kid meals which meant we were paying huge prices for 1/2 portions of food. We asked for their food ASAP and they brought it with the rest of the meals. So when we had our salads and soups they had nothing. Luckily our kids will eat anything and ate our soup and salads. read more
