This past weekend we stopped in at The Whately Inn to ask about holding a function at this restaurant. I have to say that the service we received was incredible. We came in about 10 minutes before the restaurant opened for service on a Sunday, and the head chef took time out of his day to meet with us for a few minutes. The restaurant itself is rustic in nature and totally has a farm house feel. The food was delicious and the staff was incredible. This place is a great place to stop in for a fancy dinner or Sunday brunch. The only caveat is that it is a bit expensive, but the food is great and worth the cost. read more

Dispute an unusually slow dining experience due to a lack of staff in the "post-Covid" world, we had a sensational meal. The slower service actually let our family talk to each other a bit more, so it was, not a problem at all. It was the first time in well over a year we'd all been in the same room. My fiancé and I had dinner on a Friday night. I had eaten here about 6-7 years ago and had a wonderful experience. Service was very slow. Several of our requests were not granted or forgotten for refills and such...not a huge deal. Food was mediocre and lacking in flavor. I ordered baked stuffed shrimp for my entree. The shrimp was not fully cooked and raw. The server did not return to the floor for a significant amount of time. Long enough for my fiancé to completely finish his meal plus about 10 minutes. When I explained my concern and returned it I was offered to have it bagged so I could cook it at home. I politely refused and just asked for a dessert menu. After what seemed like a longer than normal wait the shrimp was brought back out to me in a to go box. I again refused the item and ordered a dessert. When we received our bill the shrimp was still on the bill. I spoke with the server and asked that the bill be addressed. After waiting again for a significantly long period of time she returned and we were told that they do not remove any items from a bill. They only offer a gift card for us to return again. We came here for dinner to check it out as a possible caterer for our daughters wedding. The menu seemed like a throwback to when I was young and restaurants included everything - a throwback . the rolls were.good and fresh and warm and the pickled vegetables were also from the old days. The pate with ritz crackers was kind of disappointing but the shrimp was delicious and the lobster bisque wanted some sherry in the worst way. My prime rib was huge and very tasty with a great horseradish sauce. Asked potato and squash. Then dessert, a very good chocolate and vanilla cheesecake and pretty decent coffee. We had originally booked whately Inn for our wedding. Chip was totally unprofessional and didn't give us a contract or any written agreement whatsoever, but took our $500 deposit without question. We were told that he does not do tastings and that instead we had to go there for dinner and decide on our menu. We went to eat multiple times (when I say multiple I mean 3 or 4 times). Each time we ordered something different in hopes of getting a good meal, and each time we were so disappointed. We are italian and we know good, quality food! we kept tasting an odd flavor on each of the dishes... We finally asked the waitress and she told us that he CRUSHES GOLDFISH SNACKS AND PUTS IT ON TOP OF THE MEALS. After I heard this I was completely mortified and could not even think of using him for our wedding. We talked to The Log Cabin instead, and they could not have been more professional or easy and detailed. They had the most amazing coordinators and the owner is the absolute sweetest. The food at delaney & log cabin is GOOD QUALITY FOOD. SPEND A LITTLE EXTRA AND CHOOSE DELANEY. We switched to log cabin a couple of months before the wedding, and a this point we had STILL not heard from Whately about our wedding menu. It was not until a week before the wedding that we got a call from Chip (Because he had heard that we switched to a different restaurant ) pretending to want to set up a meeting for the menu. When we told him that we had switched, he continued to yell at us saying how he knew all along that we had switched. He continuously belittled us and yelled at us to the point where we had to just hang up. Please avoid this place at all costs. Chip is totally unprofessional and the food is just plain cheap. We walked in here with high hopes. I loved the sorbet in my fruit cup. Then it got bad. I love haddock but the stuffing was breadcrumbs. So I got the seafood stuffed sole. Well it is full of breadcrumbs! If there was seafood in it I couldn't see any. We got lots of food, but to have the super expensive entree cost so much and taste so mediocre - why doesn't this place forget all the "stuff" on the side and pay attention to the entree?? Table for 11....on a holiday weekend. Not an easy feat to please everyone but please they did! My husband and I had filet mignon and you could cut it with a butter knife. Cooked perfectly and wonderfully tasty. The augratin potatoes are a must! Appetizers are included in the meal price as well as salad and dessert. Wait staff are efficient and friendly and every meal was delivered as ordered. The atmosphere is as you'd imagine for an old inn, quaint, warm and tidy. Incompetent staff. I tried to pay for my parents' anniversary dinner and called twice in the day to ensure this was possible. I left my credit card information and was told it would not be a problem. A few hours went by and I never saw a charge on my account. I called and the staff member informed me that the waiter forgot about the arrangement and gave the check to my parents. Having read good reviews, we decided to make reservations for Saturday night, which happened to also be our anniversary. We arrived early and took a seat at the bar. After a few minutes of ignoring us while fumbling with the TV, the bartender finally made eye contact and asked if we knew what we wanted. We didn't, as the bartender had yet to offer us a cocktail menu or wine list. If the surly bartender hadn't been the first indication of the night to come, the cocktail menu of sugary awfulness certainly was. Every cocktail contained some variation of Bailey's, Godiva liquor, and chocolate syrup, and these weren't even the so-called "dessert" cocktails. The wine list was uninspiring and the best they could do for beer was Sam's Oktoberfest. Okay, but not craft. We were seated quickly, and noted the large, noisy room packed with baby boomers. There were only two other millennial couples in the room which struck us as a bit odd. When we sat down, the waiter brought us hot rolls drizzled in butter and garlic, which were quite good. The menu consisted of many "baked, stuffed" items and indeed, Whately Inn must be one of the top buyers of breadcrumbs in the region. We ordered the oysters rockefeller, "Maryland" seafood cakes, French onion soup, and lobster casserole to share. The oysters were rubbery and bland and the seafood cakes a dubious concoction of mayonnaise, bread crumbs, and perhaps a tablespoon of canned "seafood." The French onion soup was possibly the only passable item we ordered; though the broth didn't taste homemade, the cheese was decent and plentiful. Then came the lobster casserole: frozen, mealy lobster tossed with cream, butter, bread crumbs, and what tasted like McCormick pizza seasoning. This disaster was served with a side of frozen corn and cheap iceberg lettuce salad with Kraft-quality dressing. Nursing homes across the nation have better offerings. At this point, we were so disappointed by what turned out to be a fairly inedible meal of bread crumbs and frozen/canned seafood that we bailed on dessert and coffee, even though they came with the entree (also suspect). read more

I can't help it; I just love this place in all its stodgy, old-world charm and glory. Set in the bottom floor of an old inn, the Whately serves stick-to-your ribs French classics from a bygone era, at a great price point. I first visited here in '98, and over the years I've returned numerous times. I'm happy to report that little has changed--not the menu, not the prices, and best of all, not the quality (wish I could say the same about the rest of my old Valley haunts). I love the decor, perhaps kitschy by some accounts, but adorable in my eyes: the exposed wooden beams, the vinyl-upholstered banquet chairs, paper placemats, old silverware from grandma's, the mini-kerosene lamps at every table. Still, it's classy in that provincial, old-world way. Even the clientele evoke a earlier era; on my last visit, it consisted of locals in their 50s or older. Visiting the Whately is a singular experience to me in that it's the only restaurant I have repeatedly visited yet continue to order always the same main dish, over and over: the breast of capon a la Gismonda--basically fried chicken with a mushroom brown gravy, served with choice of potato and veggie of the day. But it is the most amazingly tender, crispy, succulent piece of bird ever to grace my lips. (Google 'capon' to see what makes it so tender, btw.) The mains are generally served with complimentary soup du jour (usually with an option of lobster bisque), salad, choice of desert (though not made in-house) and a coffee. With my favorite dish at $17 (mains topping out at 28), you can eat very well for what you pay. But really, I can't think of a more pleasant setting for grabbing satisfying, French comfort food on a cold New England night. read more

My husband and I went to Whately Inn for Sunday lunch. The food was wonderful. I had the Delmonico steak with mashed and butternut squash. Salad and clam chowder. The rolls were to die for and they give you a wonderful cukes salad. My husband had a scallop dish he loved. Everything including coffee, tea, desert included in cost of entree. Coffee delicious. We had the best waitress I've had in years named Rosemary. She was perfect. It is pricey for a lunch, however, like I said everything was included. I will definetly return. So my friends and I decided to treat ourselves to fine dining. At my urging I suggested The Whately Inn. I've been there for special occasions and it was amazing. So we made reservations for 5:00 and we were seated promptly. Two hours later we received our food. Our server Latesha apologized countless times. Just before our dinner finally came out we asked to speak to Manager Lisa. She came to our table with a deer in headlight look on her face. We told her how upset we were. She said they had an event upstairs and down and they got behind. Meanwhile other guests who came after us were getting their food. Lisa was just plain clueless and useless. One member had to leave. They served our desert with dirty plates still on table. What a horrible experience. We spent over $150 and I felt it was wasted money. Don't business care about poor service. I felt horrible recommending this restaurant. Money doesn't come easy to us so this was suppose to be a real treat. Yet all of us left disgusted. A spur of the moment trip to Western, MA brought us to the Whately Inn restaurant. My husband had searched on yelp! for a good place to grab a nice dinner & he chose this due to the great reviews. It does seem a bit out of the way to get to but the scenery will NOT disappoint nor deter. It's a beautiful area. The place was MOBBED at 7:00PM and the parking lot in front was full. There is additional parking out back and even that was full. Luckily while circling around, the parking Gods granted us a space. I will say, I did enjoy our dinner there. The staff is very friendly & accommodating, however, I kept looking around to see if Kitty & Red Forman from "That 70's Show" would be sitting somewhere in a corner having a romantic, "European" dinner! 8) The atmosphere was definitely right out of the late 70's complete with faux brick bar & small lounge off the dining area. Me n' the hubby love what I affectionately refer to as "Blue Hair Joints" - those places where most of the patrons are 65+. Having lived with my grandparents, those older folks know where the bargains are! The Whately Inn is definitely a blue hair joint. I think there were maybe 5 tables out of 30 (?), including ours, where the diners were younger than 50. If you're in your 20's, 30's and 40's and looking for a hip, off the beaten path, quaint, New England eatery, this place isn't necessarily what I'd call "hip". By saying this, I don't mean that it was "bad" - because it wasn't! Their menu was composed of many old school (i.e. circa mid-late 1970's) "French"-style dishes. There were a couple of chicken dishes but the menu had many seafood (about 3 that were lobster) and steak/red meat options. They also had 2-3 vegetarian plates available which is always nice for those not interested in partaking of flesh-based cuisine. 8) I had one of their "house specialties" being their roasted duckling on a bed of white rice, covered in a red currant glaze, accompanied by one of their select included appetizers (i had the fruit cocktail that was topped w/ a small scoop of orange sherbet), a salad, vegetable, potato and dessert (a slice of chocolate fudge pie). I enjoyed the red currant glaze on the duck a lot since duckling glazes are typically orange. Although I "like" it, orange is not my preferred flavour. The red currant was a HUGE winner for me. It was pleasantly sweet and not "tart". My entree was $23.95. My husband had their Veal Oscar (including all of the same as above for my dish) and I must say we were a little surprised as the veal was smothered in brown gravy - as opposed to the traditional hollandaise sauce of an "Oscar" dish. Looking at the menu, it seems as if brown gravy is a trademark of the Whately Inn dishes! Almost *every* item on the menu listed it. Despite the strange brown gravy, my husband said it was pretty good. His entree was $24.95. A decent bottle of Riesling, with the 2 entrees, including a glass of milk & 2 coffees came to a total of $73.00. For all of that food, it was worth it and we were quite satisfied. We also left a sizable tip for our attentive & most accommodating waitress. If you're from the North Shore of Boston and you've ever visited the Century House on Rte. 114 in Peabody well....the Whately Inn is definitely Western MA's version. I'd go back if in a pinch for a place to grab a decent meal. On the way out the hostess gave us a long stem, pink rose. I believe that's a really nice touch to conclude a nice evening. Kudos to the staff for handling such a busy night so efficiently and politely. The staff was 90% younger "kids" (approx 19-24) and they were the most on-top-of-it young staff that I think I've ever seen work a food establishment . This is a local iconic Resturant that really caters to a much older clientele. Last night was awful. They need to learn how to set up reservations or have more help to accommodate a full resturant. We had to wait 30min for drinks and still missing some of them. Took forever to have our water glasses filled. People around us got meals after us and we ordered before them. Soups were Luke warm and scallops dish was under cooked. I only go here because my 72 year old in laws love it there. read more

Our family celebrated an important anniversary Thursday evening, August 26, 2021. Our seven were seated on the inn's beautiful new porch, where we were assigned a very competent and caring waiter. The food was uniformly attractive and delicious, and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The one change I'd suggest is to remove the word "crispy" when describing the duck on the menu. Going to the Whately Inn on Mother's Day has become somewhat of a tradition, and every year there are 8 of us that make the trek to this restaurant to share a meal. We have always had a positive experience, but this time started off with being seated 30 minutes after our reservation was set. Then a steak that was ordered medium rare came out well done. This was no issue as we made the waitress aware of it and she took it back to the kitchen to be remade. A second steak was brought out and it was so rare that it was cold in the middle. The waitress seeing this brought this steak back and returned with a third steak that was also beyond rare. At this point my sister who ordered it was so hungry that she just said it was fine and accepted the third rare steak. She was sick afterward from the steak and considering how expensive meals are at the restaurant this was unacceptable. The manager refused to come over to the table and we were charged full price for the steak. We weren't looking to have it taken off the bill, but some comments from a manager would have shown that this restaurant truly values it's customers. Clearly that is not the case. I will not be returning and will be sure to share my experience with friends I know enjoy dining here. The only redeeming part of our experience was the waitress, Ashley. She was fantastic and the management could lean a thing or two from her about what good customer service looks like. read more

This place is incredible! You get so much food, excellent service, and whatever you don't eat you're encouraged to take home. You even get a freaking rose upon leaving. We were just blown away by the Whately inn. I had the rib eye, super flavorful and ended up being 3 meals! And for those who know me, they know I love steak. I don't think I've ever had leftover steak! My husby had a shrimp dish, also fan-freaking-tastic. Everyone has raved about the scallop potato. Let me tell you it lives up to the hype. So. Much. Food. My boyfriend and I visited on Sunday evening for our anniversary dinner. It was highly recommended to us by his coworker, who enjoys a good meal :) the building is very cute and old colonial, so it wasn't very bright inside but there were small candles at every table. I initially thought the prices were pretty high on the menu, but as Megan took our orders, I realized that the meals came with an appetizer (lobster bisque, fruit cocktail, or another option), a salad, a potato (baked, mashed, or au gratin), a vegetable, the meal itself, AND dessert. I quickly cancelled my order of crab cakes and knew I still wasn't going to be able to finish the meal! The food was all delicious, but I did not finish my baked potato and wrapped up more than half of my shrimp scampi as well as the cheesecake to go. My boyfriend's prime rib was delicious (if a bit fatty), but he couldn't finish his meal either and asked for a small box to bring home the leftovers for our pup. I ate the leftover shrimp scampi the next night for dinner, and the cheesecake dessert the night after that. You DEFINITELY get your money's worth in food! Our dog was VERY happy to eat the last bits of my boyfriend's steak and hopes we'll go back again and bring home another doggie bag. read more

My family and I frequently dine at the Whatley Inn when we are looking for a traditional home cooked style meal. The atmosphere is very quaint and charming and we've always had terrific wait staff. They have a great selection of locally brewed beers and wines. The food is always delicious. The steaks are tender and topped with a delicious homemade steak sauce. First time visit to the Inn. My wife and I were there for our anniversary dinner. The waitress was attentive. The meals were well presented and delicious. I have the stuff swordfish my wife had the filet mignon both properly prepared. The au gratin potatoes were some of the best I ever had. The number of the appetizers and desserts and coffee are included in the price of the entrée and there were several choices available for each. Will definitely return. read more

My companion and I went to the Whately Inn for dinner recently on a frigid Friday evening in January. The place was packed. We had a reservation, though, and were seated promptly, cheek by jowl with other diners, in the large, noisy, fusty dining room -- not exactly the place to go for a quiet, romantic dinner, at least not on a weekend. Not much has changed at the Whately Inn in decades, and that apparently includes the menu. It features what used to be called, by your bepearled grandmother back in the '50's, "continental cuisine" -- big hunks of broiled or roasted meat, Frenchified seafood dishes, heavy sauces, and table-d'hôte-style service, which means an appetizer, salad, sides, and dessert are included in the price of the entree. After we were seated, our server, who was excellent by the way -- friendly, attentive, and accommodating -- brought us a basket of dinner rolls and a small plate of pickled cucumber and onion slices along with our drinks. The dinner rolls were very good -- crusty and warm with a salty glaze on top (salt would make frequent, less welcome appearances throughout the meal). For a starter I had "mushrooms a la Grecque" -- canned button mushrooms in, sorry to say, a slightly slimy sauce that tasted like straight-up vinegar. My companion had the soup du jour -- lobster bisque on the evening we were there -- which was better than the mushrooms even though my companion thought it was cream of tomato. The salad included with the meal was a small plate of good-quality greens with your choice from a selection of bottled dressings dumped on top. This might be a good place to mention that all of the incidental accompaniments to the main dish are served in teeny tiny portions on teeny tiny plates reminiscent of those at a little girl's tea party with her dolls. For a main course I ordered chicken parm. Big mistake. The Whately Inn is not know for Italian food. This rendition of the classic Italian-American dish was dreadful. A big plate of chicken cutlets coated with a too-salty, soggy breading atop overcooked, mushy angel hair pasta swimming in a thick, too-salty but otherwise flavorless tomato sauce. The whole depressing concoction was covered with a layer of rubbery cheese, which had congealed from having sat under a heat lamp in the kitchen for too long. A teeny-tiny bowl of plain pureed butternut squash -- sweet, not salty this time -- came with the parm. Nothing to object to there. By far a better (and more expensive) choice for an entree was what my companion ordered -- a Flintstones-size, slow roasted, rib of beef, which is only offered on weekends. If you pushed the too-salty "au jus" aside, the meat itself was meltingly tender and delicious. There was a large selection of apparently commercially prepared desserts. I had a teeny tiny slice of what could have been a Table Talk blueberry pie with a teeny tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream ($1.50 extra) -- perfectly acceptable. My companions had a similiary miniscule slice of some kind of fancy store-bought cheesecake, again perfectly okay. I think the prices here are reasonable given what a meal includes. And although the food is certainly not what would be considered Instagramable these days (if you want that, head for downtown Amherst or Northampton), the Whately Inn is a safe place to take your elderly relatives, where they'll surely feel well looked after and right at home. read more

Old, with a lot of charm and character this is indeed the place where the "Blue-Hairs" dine! My mother requested dinner at the Whately Inn to celebrate her 86th birthday so that is where 16 of us gathered to celebrate. The place is classic New England with it's old Inn charm. It's large enough to comfortably accommodate a party of 16 in it's main dining room. The food was very, very good. My wife and I have GLUTEN FREE dietary requirements and our questions were confidently answered by our server, who was attentive and got everything right. Service was prompt, servers professional. Everything was really salty; my chicken liver pate was served with ritz crackers; the $30 aged angus sirloin was cooked properly, but was over-salted and a little chewy; topping it off were the boxed mashed potatoes, and sickly sweet squash. We reached the Inn by bike at sunset because all the hotels in Northampton and Amherst were full. The food and the Inn were both a pleasant surprise. As the other review notes, the restaurant menu contains some 1970s and 80s French restaurant standards. There are also more contemporary items, a respectable wine list and wonderful fresh produce. (A dish with slices of beautiful fresh cucumber with a yogurt and dill sauce was on the table when we sat down. Fresh and terrific. I had boned duck in cherry sauce (one of those old French restaurant standards). Very flavorful duck, not overpowered by the cherry sauce. Corn chowder, a little floury but very tasty, with beautiful fresh corn and a hint of bacon. Very reasonable pricing of both dinner (appetizer, dinner, salad, dessert for $20-30) and the wine list (mostly $20-28). The inn was clean, quiet, and also inexpensive ($85 with queen bed and bath). We went from on our bikes and homeless to happy quickly. read more

I've given the owners 24 hours to respond to me before posting my review..... And they didn't. Quite possibly the worst meal I've had. Ritz Crackers served with Pate. The place exists for the percentage of Americans - and their 70 plus parents - who have truly not a clue what good food is. The prices are high and these folks thus think, "This must be good food. It costs much more than subway." For Shame Whately Inn.... Here you are in the middle of farm country with fresh produce likely growing all over the area. And you serve (poorly) processed frozen food straight out of 1975. I would rather fast with my family than return here. read more

This placeis a hoot...I have family from New England and when I enter the place is reminds me of Grandma's but not in a bad way...the decor is from New England yester year and as I get older I find nothing wrong with that....the food is good for the money and the rooms upstairs are really neat and inexpensive. To me, New England fare has never been fancy so I don't expect things to change...and I'm glad this place doesn't. We're coming back up to this inn and have our room booked. It's been 30 years since the last time I ate at the Whately Inn and I'm reporting that nothing's changed other than the white table cloths and the waitresses. Pros: my drink was yummy and had 2, meal price includes choice of appetizer, salad, potato side and dessert. All of which was mediocre at best and which would not have been noticed if my main was cooked as requested. Cons: my first cocktail was a specialty drink that had 2/3 ice in the glass and only filled 1/2 way. I made a comment to the waitress after I finished it in 4 sips so my next drink still had 2/3 ice but 3/4 libation. I was so excited to see duck in the menu. Love duck and I was very specific how I wanted it prepared. Duck arrived way over cooked almost well done. It was a travesty to sayge least. I barely ate 1/4 of it. I did tell the waitress to let the chef know but nothing came of it other than 'I'm sorry' from the waitress. I had tiramisu as my dessert. Not sure what was substituted for lady fingers but it was quite soggy with no hints if rum or espresso. The waitress did seal my 1 star yelp rating by forgetting to bring our 'reason for being there' guest his token birthday cupcake with candle and traditional happy birthday singing. I did not make a seen but after everyone went outside I expressed my disappointment about this and I got an 'oh I'm so sorry!" Ps. The rose gesture for women would be awesome if they were decent quality roses. Mine was brown and dead by morning. Delicious meal and excellent service. We came for Mother's Day and enjoyed the filet, baked stuffed lobster and scallops for our entrees. With food allergies they make my food the way it needs to be which is very refreshing. The service is fast and accurate. Remodeling has occurred recently and the restrooms look great. Hopefully they will continue to make updates. I always recommend this place to friends looking for somewhere delicious for dinner. read more

My sister-in-law & brother took me out here tonight. I had king crab stuffed sole as an entree, marinated mushrooms for appetizer, and Russian dressing on the salad . Everything was absolutely excellent, including the flour-less chocolate cake with raspberry sauce. Great pina colada, too! I would definitely recommend the Whateley Inn, but make a reservation, and be ready for a long dinner (1.5 hours to eat all 5 courses). read more

Here tonight right at opening and freezing cold in here! Three parties including us complained and they just made a face and suggested a better booth. Still freezing and no one asked if they should turn it down. So had to wait an hour for main course, cold vegetables over cooked and limp. Had a special of haddock crusted with lobster and Hallandale sauce, tasteless, lukewarm and disappointing. Love their Filet Minion so may be back, but doubtful. Service was fake and if you plan to go wear a winter jacket! read more
