I stopped into The Wheeltapper on a whim for one thing: a pint of the dark stuff. Thankfully, they know how to pour a proper Guinness. It was clean, crisp, perfectly carbonated, and served with the care that true Guinness drinkers refuse to compromise on. One thing I really enjoyed was exploring the collection of historical relics displayed throughout the pub. Many of them include small descriptive plaques, making it more than just wall décor and giving the place a personality. If you're planning to catch the World Cup or another big match, this probably wouldn't be my first choice. There are only a handful of seats with truly good views of the TVs, and my table's chairs were actually bolted to the floor, making it impossible to adjust for a better angle. read more

This little place has great energy! I was staying at Fitzpatrick Hotel next door (I think they own it - that's what my receipt says). So I'm not a regular and don't know if it's always like this but on both the day and Wednesday nights the crowd was fairly large for a small pub and noise level was high. People enjoy libations and chatter. Restaurant seemed pretty full too. I stopped in for a simple to go order to bring to my room in the hotel. It was cold so I felt like a bowl of soup. Beef stroganoff was their soup of the day so I ordered it. I wasn't overly excited about stroganoff and when I opened it even less so it was like oil and water that wouldn't mix. I literally stirred it before each spoonful. But guess what? It grew on me and WAS really good!! Beef cubes, fresh mushrooms and onions and a belly warming broth. Came here for work drinks - never been here before but stumbled upon it during my lunch break. Has the British pub feel to it - the space is actually quite large when you go all the way to the back. There is also a massive patio at the back with heaters. We didn't go to the back as there was a corporate event. The place was definitely buzzing. Great space for a small outdoor oasis in the busy city. The service was 5 stars, the food was 5 stars and the value was great. Guiness was poured right with lots of drink options available. The drinks are good, food is better than normal pub fare and served with flair. I like the private booths. This isn't a place for a big group to meet, it would be too cramped. The 3 stars come plainly because the atmosphere in this place is spot on, and they pour a nice Guinness. Been here a few times now and service has been fine. It's really a beautiful pub with amazing wooden interior and traditional nook layout. The issue is the food is meh. Ordered the french onion soup (FOS) a few times and wasn't thrilled. Came out luke warm with minimal cheese. We can't have that. The sliders also had zero flavor. Tasted like my uncles burgers growing up. No seasoning. Located at the Hotel Fitzpatrick, it has a comfortable railroad theme (grand central station is across the street) with a number of intimate tables for a feeling or privacy within a large noisy establishment. Unfortunately, years ago they had the most incredible dishes - like their shepherds pie. Used to have the creamiest mashed potatoes...today It is still very good ... but not standout special. Showed up today Sunday (6/12) evening at around 8pm as a means to grab a cold one for the day due to the intense humidity and the bar was quite empty with a few patrons (6 of them scattered) so asked the bartender if the bar seating was open and so it was. She came and took my order for 1 bud light as I went on my phone to see my work week schedule and 7 mins later, no drink still! I patiently waited thinking maybe they are refilling the beer kegs but nope. An older dutch couple showed up and they asked for their moscow mule and she immediately rang it up with not a single time to spare and served them pretty quick. Do note I am still waiting for my drink. So she goes back to the patrons in front and chit chats and forgets entirely about my drink! Never had this, never experienced this and frankly, i felt singled out. Is it because I am non-white that she felt the need to prioritize other patrons while a busy engineer sits there waiting for his drink to get nothing? Never experienced this before and I just merely walked out quite upset feeling a bit annoyed because for other patrons its like she gave them priority. Not coming back here even drunk. Honestly, I don't have very much to say about this place. I used to work near here, so some of my colleagues and I would come out after work for a couple beers. I haven't tried any of the food, so I couldn't tell you how that is. Usually after work, there's enough seating to fit the 3-6 of us who come out, but at times there's a bit of a wait. The pub is a lot bigger than you would expect it to be based on what it looks like from the outside, and it has the typical feel of a pub. The service is fine, but like I said, I've only ever been here for a couple of drinks after work. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, and I definitely wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit the Wheeltapper Pub, but if you're in the area looking for a convenient place to grab a couple beers, this is a solid place to do it. read more

The wings were decent, I didn't get a chance to try the mozzarella sticks (which may mean they were really good!), and the sliders were really dry and overcooked. This is a decent place to grab a drink after work in the GCT area. However, in the winter I don't recommend sitting in the patio area. Went here to catch up with an old colleague and the front part of this surprisingly deep place was packed, but the lady said we could sit on the heated and covered patio. This is all fine, but slowly, the place starts filling up with cigarette smoke and I realize that tons of people are smoking. Mind you, even though it's a patio, it's covered and heated and in 35 degree weather you can sit there with just a shirt on so it's not outside by any stretch. That was kind of a turn off. The final turnoff was poor Sameer. He and his bros were pounding shots at the table next to us, because, you know, they're awesome. So he takes one tequila shot and then immediately vomits. But because he's a tough dude (and he succumbs to peer pressure easily) he took another one and kept it down. Way to puke and rally, Sameer! Maybe it's just me, but when I'm having a friendly meal and beer with a friend, I'm not so much into being surrounded by vomit and cigarettes. I know I was on the East Side so I should have expected as much, but that's just not my scene, bro. Also, six beers, nachos and the quesadilla totalled $80. The food alone was $30 and would have been a value at $15. At $30, just way overpriced. If you go (and you're not a smoker or a puker) try to get a seat inside. We were staying next door and my dad somehow got 2 free drink vouchers, and gave them to us. We walked in at 9:00 on a Thursday night and it was busy. I found a table in the corner and we waited quite a while until I flagged a server for drink menus. 15 minutes later I flagged another guy to order drinks, and he did not look pleased we had vouchers. I got the Barefoot Beachcomber, made of sparkling wine, coconut vodka and pineapple juice, $14. Stephen had a Guinness on draft, $8.
