I went against the warnings of my fellow Yelpers and plunged right into the White Spot in broad daylight for lunch today and completely sober. Hmmm, perhaps that's why I'm only giving this place three stars. My taste buds were all in check and I was completely aware of my surroundings. You can easily tell the owner has a thing for the ladies by the amount of pictures he has of himself with them plastered all over the walls. Lovely. This really is a hole in the wall on University Ave. It's obvious that students flock here cause the food is pretty damn cheap and it's somewhat filling. I ordered the double gus burger with fries. The burger itself was good. It wasn't real huge or especially tasty, but it was good. The fried egg was a bit over cooked but it was still a nice addition. The fries were forgettable. I am sure this place has a loyal, drunk student following. I mean, how can it not being located right across the street from campus and right in the middle of all these bars? Well a Double Gus isn't going to cure your ails, it will more than likely help you purge that excess of alcohol from your system before you either do it naturally or you pull the trigger. If you show up at around 2am, expect to wait a while for your food and witness a fight or two and a bunch of undergrads pretending to know the owner like they are best friends so they look cool and get their food faster. It is without a doubt a late night place, it isn't the best burger you will have when you are sober, but when you are drunk it is the best thing you have ever consumed. I'll start with dessert: a Grills With may be the closest you can get to using heroin without doing drugs. 2 Krispy Kremes, fried on the griddle in butter til the sugar caramelizes + scoop of vanilla ice cream = ecstasy. You will feel horrible about yourself by the time you get home though. They don't serve this delicacy during peak hours, so you'll have to stop by early or on a weeknight. Everything else is standard for late night food. This is where UVA students go once they've gotten sick of eating little john's for all of first year and are ready for some real grease. Cramped atmosphere guarantees that you will become friends with the people next to you. Dmitri (the comical greek man who runs the place) is a sleazeball, and boy, does he love blondes-- just look at the pictures posted on the wall. However, that also means my girlfriend and her friends eat for free and thus I eat for free, so I can't complain. read more

White Spot is that place you go when it's really late, you're starving, and your friends aren't sober. I mean what? Wait. Actually yes. This place is a quintessential college staple after you've stumbled out of Trinity, or wherever you hailed from. We've ordered the BLT, the fries, the classic burger with egg, more fries, and onion rings, with well, a side of more fries. The BLT was exactly what you'd expect, crisp bacon, mayo, a few pieces of lettuce, and a thick cut of tomato. The fries are the "we kind of feel like we came out of the freezer bag and into the fryer but the mystery stands" kind of deal. They're crisp and they taste delicious in ketchup. I don't know what it is but my people like this place because it's salt of the earth, the servers are always good humored, and the crowd is lively after a certain hour. I've never eaten here during the day but I imagine you'll get all the same elements minus some hijinks and hilarity. read more

You know how, if you're lucky, there's a place, or places, at your college/university that remain largely the same after you graduate and become an adult? You'd expect that to be commonplace at the University of Virginia, founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson and located in one of the most pleasant and picturesque towns in the US. And it's true, especially at the Corner, a section of University Ave/Main St that's been a center of student life and activity since at least the 1960's, when I was there. The White Spot was the go-to, 24-hour Corner diner for students needing late-night eats then, and it's still the same today. A few changes have occurred over the years, some good, some not so good: The big confederate flag on the wall is gone, replaced by sports pics and wall-to-wall menus. Henry, and his huge chili dogs and greasy hamburgers, is gone, replaced by Gus and his Greek menu, Gusburger, and equally greasy hamburgers. The diner's size has doubled, having at some point expanded into the storefront next door with actual sit-down tables (the Spot's original counter and stools remain unchanged --- we old-timers still sit there, so we can catch up on the news from Henry/Gus while we're getting fed). And even though Henry is now Gus, you're still warmly greeted at the door when you come in, just like it's always been. If you visit the Spot, you'll probably have grease on your shirt after you leave. You may have heartburn for a few hours afterward. You'll definitely have some money left after you pay your bill. And you'll be caught up on all the latest news at the Corner. But, most importantly, you'll have joined the thousands of UVa students who have, over the years and at all hours of the day and night, been rejuvenated and made ready to face the next class or exam by the food and friendship found at the Spot. read more

Just to break the ice and everything, I LOOOOVE eggs. I love eggs of all shapes and sizes, I am an egg enthusiast. So if I hear about a burger with an egg on it, you know I'll be there in a heart beat. The Gus Burger is a great inexpensive meal (or even in most cases for myself, a snack). It is surely their signature dish as simple as it seems to make. However, it appears that the Gus Burger might be one of the only few things going for them. Tried the pastrami which was certainly disappointing, and the fries are underwhelming considering most of their inventory is already packaged/frozen foods. I wanna come back and say something to the owner, who looked like he didn't give a sh* about his customers. First of all, he thought I was drunk or something, because the dude ripped me off. I clearly said "2 Gus burgers and 1 Fries to-go". The total came up to be $12.30 something. Pretty expensive for 2 burgers and 1 fries but whatever. He gives me a box with 1 burger and fries. I told him, "I ordered 2 burgers", and he just goes "No". I thought he was joking, so I waited around, but he moved on to the next customer. So $12+ for burger + fries?? I was just speechless at the owner's lack of interest and care, so I gave him $5 more for another burger. To be honest I may be a bit generous. I think this is a solid 3.5 stars. White Spot is nestled amongst the campus area of UVA. The staff were friendly and the food was good. I got "One Hell of a Mess", which comprised of toast, covered in sausage gravy with 3 fried eggs on top. Also there were breakfast potatoes on the side. A lot of food for $7.95! If I were to get it again I would probably ask for french fries instead of the breakfast potatoes. As a potatoes were a little undercooked and hard. There homemade hot sauce was really good also. You fight your way to the front of the line where you shove your money into the owners hands and grab your burger. That's right, you don't even get to order. If you want something other than a Gusburger, go before midnight. You might actually get a seat at the bar. I have never had a Grill because, frankly, I think that eating a fried KrispyKreme Donut with ice cream will kill me. But I hear they are good. I'll just take their word for it. Home of the Gus Burger begs a person to try a Gus burger. It is a low on beef patty with american cheese and a fried egg. Condiments are optional but overall it is pretty tastey. I got the Spot Special which includes fries and a drink. Cups are pretty small which requires frequent refills. They also serve breakfast unfortunately it is not all day long. I would definitely come back here again. Not a place for the healthy eater as most things are full of fat, fried or both. They do offer 2 types of salads (greek or chef). read more

To be quite honest, all the time's I've been here surrounded by drunk people and although it may be advertised as a late night hangout, even alcohol can't save the integrity of the burgers here. I used to cringe at the thought of having egg on my burger but now I totally dig it. It's also not bad sober, but usually lacks the community feeling one enjoys when cramming into here at about 2 AM and seeing everyone who was out that night. Okay. White Spot is THE place for burgers and related fare in cville. The Gus is the staple - burger with fried egg - if you go for the first time get that. Sober or drunk, doesn't matter. Steak and cheese is also highly recommended. Breakfast at White Spot is equal in its glory. If making your heart stop is a high priority, order 'One hell of a mess,' it's two fried eggs, hashbrowns, toast, all topped with sausage gravy. Crazy good. The white spot's food is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's really good then other times not so much. Whenever you ask for extra ketchup or extra mayo they NEVER give it to you which is kind of annoying when you get delivery. They charge you an extra $2 almost $3 if you want bacon on your hotdog but only give you 2 pieces of bacon. well this has been on my cville food bucket list, that is as much as i can say i ordered ahead and picked up, i got the gyro with fries the food was very unremarkable, i didnt really like the fries, they were too dry and stiff service from the guy at the counter was fine i didnt eat in, and i think that is a good idea, this is a typical greasy spoon diner place, which is great if youre nostalgic for that kind of thing, im not a few comments (dare i say most?) will say come here when you are totally inebriated. i never get the appeal of that. its like seeing an unattractive chick with beer goggles on and then saying shes really hot. or a shallow hal experience ? anyone ? anyone??? i didnt try the gus burger, as i dont like fried eggs on top of a burger anyways , i AM glad i came here for the time i spend here in cville, but there are other places in town which would be better, at least for my taste buds read more

This is a local dive joint that I'm sure college students stumble into after a long night of drinking to eat something greasy to soak up all the alcohol. Eating it for dinner at 8pm wasn't the best meal ever but I can appreciate it for what it was. For $4.25 you get a single juicy patty topped with whatever you want and a fried egg (Gus burger). There are various other diner foods you can order for a cheap price as well. My bf ordered a Gus combo and I got a Gus burger. I ate half and couldn't finish it because I was already full. Alright so we know that it must have been a good night if I ended up here... My two girlfriends sat with me as I ate my first Gusburger, and it was actually tasty. But it is INSANE that it costs $5 --that is way too much for a fastfood burger that is not even that big. The bun is obviously packaged and looks like its been on the shelf for a long time.
