I lived in LA for 4 years and just moved back to Charlottesville. Even though I had In-N-Out I missed the gus burger SO much. Four years of trying to order a fried egg on a burger the way they do it at White Spot has just been one disappointment after another in LA... and there are good places to eat in LA. Nothing beats a Gus Burger as the perfect late night snack after a few beers and a game of shuffleboard at Boylan. They're gyros are also really good... Prob not the most popular thing on the menu since most always its Gus Burger one after another being ordered, but I love me a good gyro and they've got a good one. A Gusburger - cheeseburger with a fried egg - is the classic. Not only is it tasty but it is also dirt cheap. This is everything you want in a cheap diner. The Grillswith is a sickeningly amazing dessert. Two Krispy Kreme donuts are fried on the grill and served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The longest lines are usually late night on the weekends. Other times, it is easy to get a seat in the spacious dining area and be served quickly. What a wonderful place. Quite casual, theres just a bar and the grill ur food right in front of you and your in and out real quick. I had to try the gus burger and it wasnt horrible to be frank. The mexican owners were a delight to have around. Very willing to help you out with any sort of request. The Chicago Cubs were on vs The miluakweee whatevers and it was intense. I'm a UVa graduate who's been to the White Spot a number of times historically. Went back yesterday morning with my wife, who happens to be pregnant. Was promptly told by the cook that pregnant women belonged at home in the kitchen when we asked for the eggs to be well cooked. I initially laughed thinking he was joking. The cook made it crystal clear that he wasn't and continued his tirade against pregnant women eating outside of the home. I realize this isn't a concern for just about every student but do strongly encourage you to take your money elsewhere. read more

Quite simply, this is the best drunk food you get after last call anywhere in Charlottesville. I can't really put in words how perfect a Gus burger tastes when you've got the drunk munchies. It's so good that it's a mob in there after bars close. Typically it goes like this: bars close, students spill out into the street. You plan to hit the White Spot (which is approximately 500 feet away) but you or someone in your group constantly sees someone else they know and have a chat. The process of getting to the White Spot takes probably 9.2 times longer than it should. Once there, you must drunkenly strategize who will go into the crazy mob of drunken Gus-burger seekers (make no mistake, it gets intense) and order 6 to 12 burgers for the lot of you. It helps to know the owner because he can get quite cranky, however, he likes pretty girls and will be sweet to them - something to keep in mind for your post 2am strategy. PAY WITH CASH. Don't even ask if they take credit cards. Unless you're pretty, that is. And even then, you are pushing it. The Gus burger itself is insanely simple (it's a burger with a fried egg on top) but there is something about the mix of all of this - the cheap bun, the condiments, the egg - that is pretty much heaven for a drunk college kid. I recommend ordering at least 2. Plus fries. Tip: do not, under any circumstances, eat a Gus burger not drunk. It is not the same. read more

The White Spot's grilled chicken Philly is fantastic! Excellent crusty sub roll with cheesy provolon, green pepper and grilled onions. They wouldn't say what the marinade was, but it was tasty. Add the fries they are hot cooked to order. For me I chose a diet coke to wash it all down. Definitely will be back! read more

it's so good but when i went in with one of my friends there were only men in there. as 16 year old girls the atmosphere was mildly scary BUT THE BURGERS WERE SO GOOD. we decided to back later for dinner the next day and it was PACKED with men. vibes were off. good ass burgers tho, but bring a chaperone if you're a woman. read more

I can say that I had the Gus Burger. Was it great? Not really. Just a standard burger with an egg on it. Can't say I could put my finger on why the burger didn't please my palate. I came here drunk and I still hated it!! i mean i usually love fried egg on a burger, but even drunk i could tell the quality was lacking. One time I ate it sober only b/c my bf had never tried it and wanted to see what the hype was all about and the bun was cheap, the beef was grade D and i had a stomachache for hours after. Wow, this was a let down. My friend who went to UVA said the Gus was a must try, but the burger tasted like a cheap imitation of McDonald's. The fries must have been sitting on a cooling rack for hours before I got to them, because they were cold and mushy on the inside. Thank God the campus tour made up for the crappy meal. read more

One of the best places to eat on the corner; perhaps the best. The staff is incredibly friendly, funny and talkative, and the food is never a disappointment. They have a variety of different, delicious breakfasts, as well as the classic Gusburger (which lives up to its hype of being a must have). Great place, the food is great but the service is the best. Last summer, I went here for lunch and when I went to pay, I realized that I had forgotten my credit card at home. I've been here a number of times and each time is great. I went a week ago and got a good serving of scrambled eggs with cheese, two slices of toast, and two slices of ham for nearly 5 dollars. I spent many happily drunken nights going into White Spot for the Gus Burger, and it was delicious. Just to make sure, I would go back during the day and make sure they tasted the same sober....they were Delicious. Terrible! Avoid at all costs. Ordered the Gyro Platter and watched the guy handle the food and condiments with dirty hands. I couldn't bring myself to eat it, I mean he had his hands all over the place throwing stuff out handling the cash register and then grabbing the onions and my food.
