I have a love/hate relationship with The Wicked Monk. Which is to say, I want to love this spot so badly, but my 4 or so experiences here have been mixed. Let's get honest, my dearest Yelpsters. THE GOOD: The drinks are on point. The cocktails, the beers, the selection in general--it's all great. No complaints with anything coming out of the bar. Additionally, my cohort and I have tried most of the flavors of the wings and we have always been happy with them. Great stuff in the wing zone. Food and drink aside, you just cannot deny that the aesthetic at this place is awesome. They're going for a kind of gothic sanctuary/monastery vibe inside and it is totally working for them. I get the desire to come back to the Wicked Monk partially because the building is just so damn cool, and you're doing something right when that's the case. THE BAD: We have consistently found the value and quality of the starter and entree items to be inconsistent. I'll just kick off this segment of the review with the value part. The menu is overpriced. And I know what you're thinking "we live in New York, tell me something I don't know." But no. There are some things I cannot bear and refuse to weather. I have unfortunately found some of these things on the Wicked Monk's menu. You're going to have to check out my photos for reference, though. I will use the "Reuben Spring Rolls" as exhibit A. This appetizer was $10. What we received was two, not impressively sized, spring rolls. Were they tasty? Yes, yes they were. Will I ever willingly pay $5 per spring roll again? Absolutely not. I was honestly pretty upset with that value gap. It just feels like extortion, and I hate that. Moving on, though. On another visit, I got the fish and chips. I asked for a side of cole slaw and was willing to pay for it. What I got was a (maybe) 1/2 cup serving of cole slaw in a porcelain ramekin...which was pretty much what I was expecting. What I was not expecting was to be charged $4 for that when the check came. Again, there's just a value gap here. It feels like extortion, and it makes me not want to eat at your restaurant again. Check out my photo of the fish and chips and you tell me if you think that plate is worth $17 NOT including the $4 cup of cole slaw. Would you pay $21 for the food in that picture? I hope not. I could go on, and not everything on their menu is so price-inflated, but you get the point; unfortunately, I have felt that I'm paying way too much for way too little enough times at the Wicked Monk to be put off. On to the part about the quality. I have experienced a phenomenon at the Wicked Monk several times that is always stunning, always surprising, and never welcome: The food looks great on the plate...yet tastes bad in my mouth. It is a disconnect that I have as much a hard time understanding as I do stomaching. On a specific outing, myself and 3 others all came in for dinner. We ordered Bangers and Mash, Shepherd's Pie, the Gaelic Steak, and the Steakhouse Sandwich. The steakhouse sandwich was really great (and I've ordered it again since--still good). The Bangers and Mash were ok; I wouldn't get it again, but they were alright. The Shepherd's Pie and the Gaelic Steak...were a very sad state of affairs. It's not that they tasted bad...they just didn't taste like anything! It was so bland...I just...I don't know what to say. I never understand bland food. Overseasoning? Ok sure, it's not good, you got overzealous, but at least you tried. Underseasoning? What happened back there? Again, the food looked great but it just tasted so bland it was unappetizing. My two friends who ordered the steak and the pie didn't even finish half of their food, didn't take it home with them, and we went somewhere else afterwards so they didn't have to be hungry. I'll just not say anymore about this. The steakhouse sandwich was solid though... WRAPPIN' IT UP: All in all, the Wicked Monk has only been ok for me. With the aesthetic/theme of the spot, the ambiance, and the good drinks, I can't tell you how much I want to be in love with it. Unfortunately, I'm just not. We'll probably never be back for dinner again because it's not worth the gamble with our money. For drinks and wings though? We'll definitely be back around. read more

My family and I went on two separate occasions and I can't believe we hadn't come sooner. Food was delicious. Drinks were delish and dessert was the topping on the entire meal!! Both times we went we ordered the shrimp and calamari which was perfectly fried and seasoned. We cleaned the dish both times. The chicken pot pie is to die for & if your really hungry then ordering the Shepard's pie (entree portion) is a great option, it feeds 3... I should've ordered it as an appetizer it may have a tad smaller who knows, but it was still amazing. The lamb was perfectly braised and the reduction of the sauce was perfect. The mash potatoes could have used a pinch of salt but that was the least of my worries. We know some places have off days, so on our second visit we skipped the grilled chicken sandwich; which according to my adult son, the chicken was dry and the bread was too hard to bite. Spacious!!! I love that this place has space. You can't find that very often in Manhattan or Queens. I was involved in a show here yesterday & while Bay Ridge (where this is located) is hard to get to on public transit, this place is a very easy walk & right at the intersection of 95th Street and 3rd Avenue. You can also see the view of the bridge right outside if you look to your right as your facing away from the bar. My sex on the beach here was good & they have a great stage for performance. No problems hearing the band and it wasn't overpowering. The ladies room was small but well lighted with good mirrors (particularly pertinent to our purposes). The vibe was very chill and staff I encountered was friendly. My experience here made me consider going to Bay Ridge for events more often since I didn't feel creeped out being here around 2 a.m.; seems prices would be more fair at venues (this event had a $5 cover as opposed to the $10 one I had to pay the night before to see a band) & the crowd would be far friendlier than in Manhattan or parts of Queens. read more

I've always loved this place. The food is good and it's also a fun bar - especially when there is a band playing. However, this review is mostly about the wonderful waiter that my best friend and I had about almost two weeks ago. His name is Thomas and he was super sweet, attentive, quick and so nice to talk to. We pretty much chewed his ear off that night but he remained kind and respectful the entire time. It's waiters like him that make you want to return to a place. Wicked Monk rules, when i was younger i did not like this place as much but i like it more and more as i get older. Pool table and dart boards in the back, always have good drink specials, and live rock music from local bands! Great place to knock back a few. The thing i like about Wicked Monk the most is the decor, it's just strange! You look up and you see a painted mural on the ceiling, strange masks with beret's and some gargoyle-type structures throughout the place...kickp-ass! Not a good burger. Place looks great. Nice crowd. Good service and beer. But a simple burger was NOT good. It tasted like some truffle oil or other addition was on the burger or roll and the fries also. I asked the bartender if there was anything added and he had no answer. Maybe my expectations were too high as I only came here since Pipins has just closed. Or maybe , and more likely, this is a great bar to drink at and may have tasty food ( there were a good amount of people sitting and eating ) but this place may be the type of bar you get anything other than a burger. read more

(3 1/2 stars) Loving the new location, new interior, also that they expanded the space & made it into a restaurant & not JUST a bar. Great service & nice to see live bands again. It moved from 5th ave to 3rd ave, what a great move that was! The only thing l wasn't crazy about was the beet walnut salad, my cousin & l started out with. l did't like it at all. The walnuts were burnt! The dressing didn't taste good & it was honestly just "blah". Like l've mention in my other reviews l won't send food back since l don't trust what comes back, for obvious reasons, lol. My cuz got "Crawfish tacos" since it was (lf l heard correctly) it was "New Orleans night" which was also why they had a band from New Orleans playing. l believe they were called The Bayou Boys? I hope l got that right, it was 2 men (guitarist/singer & a drummer). They were good! My cuz said she liked the tacos. The "Wild Mushroom Mac n'Cheese" was good but kind of bland, a lil'more salt & some pepper-perfect! Wicked Monk is your above average bar and grill that has a really cool ambience and decor. It looks like an old medieval abbey with the faux stained glass and the stone walls. It's really cool and worth going to at least once. When you enter, the bar is to your right and the restaurant is to your left and there's railing blocking them off from each other. TVs line both the bar areas and the restaurant. They tend to have special events like live music and other stuff a few times a week and it's definitely a popular spot with a good reputation. When you tell people you were at the Monk last night everyone seems to have a good story about them. The food itself is above average for bar food. It's nothing crazy good but it's consistently above average which is important. This would've been a four star review but the uniqueness of the decor and the great staff bump it up to 5 stars. It's definitely a place you'll want to add into your rotation if you've never been, you should definitely go one night and check it out. It's worth the trip. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but alas it what is. I have been here three times and every time I feel meh about it. The mixed drinks have been overly sweet and reminiscent of a quickly made cruise cocktail. The beers are good and there is a solid variety. The food is the crux. The buffalo mac and cheese is good but 1 out of three times it has been edible; the other two times it was over spiced. The philly cheese steak mac and cheese was good but nothing to write home about. The burger was ok but again with the selections of places around there are better burgers within walking distance. The staff is quick to get your order for food and drinks. The trick is getting a refill or a second round of drinks. The decor is awesome and I love the stain glass windows, and they even have a pulpit. The noise level is always high and if there is band playing do not even try to have a conversation. So will I go back: yes. Will I continue to be disappointed that this place is not the great Irish bar I want to be: yes. read more

I was here a few nights ago with my family. We ordered two cheeseburgers which were very good. Then my son ordered the braised short ribs and here's what I have to say.. The meal was bland and not to mention a very small portion, and extremely overpriced!!! I could eat far superior food in the city at that price and cheaper!! My husband ordered the fried buttermilk chicken and he said it tasted like a powder mix coated the chicken and it had a grainy texture. Thank God I ordered a cheeseburger along with my sons girlfriend we were very pleased with that. Been to this place many times. Decor is great. The drinks are good. The food has gotten progressively worse. Portions are small and the taste of several of their food items are awful. I met friends for dinner tonight and we sat in the garden. It was a bit chilly but overall a perfect night for eating outdoors. I had the lobster tacos. They were sooooo good!! One friend had the fish and chips, another had the Shepard's pie and the third friend the Cobb salad. We all cleaned our plates. I love love fucking love the decor, if I could separately rate that at 5 stars I would. The stained glass, carved wood, illuminated mural on the ceiling- there's something to look at everywhere. I came in around 6:30/7 and left at 9:30 on a Saturday night and the place was nearly empty. Supposedly it gets more crowded at 10, and then really crowded at midnight, but I was just dropping in for a quick drink so I couldn't stay to see that for myself. When I first sat down a woman bartender was serving me, she had a generous pour and was charging me $5 per glass of Jameson. Then her shift was over and a male bartender took over who poured me really tiny portions and charged me $7 a glass. I don't know what was up with that, it was strange for a few reasons. But bottom line: if what you're serving me in a glass can't fill a shot, you've got it wrong. The people there enjoy classic rock which was really, really nice. For once I wasn't the only one putting it on the jukebox. They have some video games, I think one was boxing themed which looks like It'd be really fun to try drunk. Clean bathrooms. I had been looking forward to my wife taking me here for Father's Day for over a month. We were treated like crap from the second we walked in the door. We were left standing in the alcove for over five minutes after being greeted. Despite the place being totally empty at 1pm on a Sunday, we were seated at a tiny little table outside the kitchen (we're large people). My wife asked the busboy if we could be seated at a larger table, he said yes, and then the snotty greeter told us larger tables were reserved for larger parties and moved us back to the crappy little table in front of the kitchen...again, the place was friggin' EMPTY! I asked if we could order off the lunch menu because I had my heart set on fish n chips and a Guinness and was told we had to wait until 3pm if I wanted that. We walked out and will never come back. Irish pubs are supposed to be all about hospitality. We have never felt less welcome in a place. I wish I had the option to give no stars, because my wife was practically in tears when we left. read more

I went here with a friend yesterday for lunch. I loved the decor, it's dark but in an inviting way. We sat at a table by the window and which was nice because we were able to see the parade going by. The host and our server were lovely, and shared the specials with us. The service was a little slow, but our server kept our drinks full. When the food arrived it was so worth the wait! We both got burgers and I don't know what they did to them but it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. The burger, the roll and the cheese were so flavorful and juicy. The onion rings it came with we're crispy and perfectly breaded, and the fries were seasoned and great! The potions were large too! I tried their honey mustard with the fries which was very unique. Thin but "sticky" consistency, more on the honey side but the mustard it's mixed with has a real kick. Very interesting and I recommend tying it you're a honey mustard fan. Honestly I can't wait to come back for another burger, and maybe try some of their other dishes. SO GOOD. read more

This is a cool restaurant/bar. When you walk in you can go either right or left. The tables are to the left and the bar is to the right. The room is split up with a small and short wall. I think the tables are all regular table and there are booths and some tables as well. I didn't try the food but they serve food on both sides and it's the same menu. There are a bunch of flat screens as well playing sports games when i was there. There is a small stage in the back of the room and they have live music here on the weekends pretty consistently i think. It was a cover band the night I went and they were pretty good. Wasn't too crowded but crowded enough. Great vibe here. The staff here is nice too. Security, bartenders, were all fast and very nice. They were on top of spills here too. If anybody spilled anything it wasn't there for more than a minute or two. Good thing to keep people from slipping. I'll be back to try the food out soon. read more

We came for the food and not the band! Don't know who even the band was. We just wanted food, God forbid! $20 just to sit down to eat?! Never again. I love this new space they moved to! It's big, there's a lot of tv's and they are kid friendly. The servers are all super nice and accommodating and the bathrooms are clean, plus! They have live music here on the weekends sometimes which is a nice change from some of the other bars around the Ridge. They have a nice selection of beer and a fairly big menu. Their sliders are really tasty and their mac and cheese is nuts! They also serve brunch now which is cool. Definitely a good spot! read more

Our first time here yesterday for lunch. Food was overall good including buffalo wings, dry rub wings, Mac and cheese, and a few sandwiches. Drinks were very good and reasonable for the area. My main issue was our waitress (a dark haired woman didn't catch her name) was not at all friendly and seemed rather impatient with the few questions / requests my table had. We took my mom and dad here one Friday during lent. They were looking forward to fish and chips, and were delighted with their lunch. There were two delicious generous pieces of cod batter dipped and expertly fried to a crisp golden brown. It wasn't greasy or fishy at all! With Bay seasoned fries on the side, it was a perfect meal. I was met with yelling and a disrespectful tone asking why I'm coming in so late expecting to be served. I'm totally polite and give everyone the benefit of the doubt having previously worked in the service industry. However, this was outrageous. My girlfriend and I met here for our first date when it a small bar on 5th Avenue, but they've since re-located to an expansive pub/restaurant location on 3rd Avenue. We're big fans of the weekend brunch specials even though service occasionally takes a bit longer than expected. Be sure to make a reservation just to be safe. We showed up without one our first time at the new location, but the staff was kind enough to seat us even though it was fairly crowded. The chicken and waffles on the weekend brunch menu seem to be hit or miss for me. When I first tried it the chicken was boneless cutlets and delicious, but recently seems to have been switched to a bone based fry, and not as good as it used to be. Also, the Bloody Marys are well recommended for that brunch fix. read more

my rating for the wicked monk would be like 3.8 i'm basing this rating off a few things. 1. the staff is super friendly that always is a plus in my book (: 2. like the ambiance good vibes ! 3. i don't really drink much but they have such a large variety of beers ! and the bar itself is huge! 4. they have like a bar menu for snacks after a certain time for a good price! 5. my only thing was the food is hit or miss. i'm not a fan of the pork chop which i saw lots of other people on yelp rave about. it's like really sweet ? and i guess it threw me off i was expecting savory since i'm eating pork chops. the dry rubbed wings are good, the bangers and mash are good (: sliders were mehhhh... but overall there's stuff on the menu i like and some things i don't. but that's anywhere right? It makes me very sad to post a not so great review of this place as it used to be my weekly go to spot literally since it opened. I've been going less & less as the quality of the food & drinks has gone way down hill. The cleanliness of the actual restaurant & bathroom weren't up to par either. Shame on who ever is managing the place now. It was never the same after Billy left. I had the worst dirty martini I think I've ever had in my life last night, it was watered down olive juice with one grey olive at the bottom that I literally spit out into my napkin. The fish & chips were inedible, I use to order this often but the batter is different now, greasy flavorless mushy mess. My sons burger was extremely salty, my husband faired better than us with his steak sandwich but still not great. The wait staff watched as my husband had to fix the unsteady table by putting a napkin under on leg, no one came over to assist, they just watched. This is an awesome bar in Bayridge with amazing drink prices for happy hour. I ordered three high end vodka & seltzers & it was only $15!! That's super unusual in Brooklyn!!! The food looked & smelled amazing!! I wish I tried something but I'm really trying to not eat anything that isn't healthy right now. The bathroom was incredibly clean & well stocked. The local patrons were friendly & helpful in allowing to get in to order a drink from the bartender. The bartender Danielle was very friendly & accommodating to the large group of people I came with from work. All in all, a great time had by all & I can definitely see us going back since it's close to work. read more
