The boyfriend and I were in the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon in Bay Ridge just strolling around. We happened to spot this place and decided in get some drinks and food before we headed home. The place is pretty big and looks pretty new. It has a gothic, church kind of feel with a bunch of dining tables, a small stage for performers and a long bar. We settle into the bar, the bartender greets us with menus and a smile. I survey the clientele at the bar and there's a few single men, an older couple making out and and younger couple deep in conversation. They all seemed like people from the neighborhood. Wasn't impressed....went here this past Wednesday for a social night out with my co workers. It was described as a bar and a restaurant place. So we get there is an Irish Pub, the interior is kinda weird. It had a Catholic church theme pulpit/podiums, weird little gothic faces on the wall interesting ceiling mural over the bar. Anyway menu looked ok, drinks were weak. Most of my co workers ordered the monk burger. I don't eat beef or pork so I played it safe and ordered the BBQ wings and sweet potatoe fries, the other popular order was the shrimp and fried calamari, Well another guy ordered the buffalo wings. Surprisingly our food came out in a timely manner the wings were ugggh...my BBQ wings were a ketchup homemade sauce...so not BBQ at all I was disappointed, the other guy who had the buffalo wings said his just tatsted weird and did not have the traditional buffalo flavor. My sweet potatoes was fresh n hot. I ordered the lamb meatballs to go. When I got home I decided to try them. They came with 3 sauces. I got more sauce than I got meatballs. Anyway dry hard lamb meatballs so I gave them to the dog who had a hard time chewing them but of course are them. Really really cool decor / atmosphere.. extensive drink menu. As for the food it looked interesting but i just ordered wings so cant really comment. I will say that the wings were not good.. the buffalo sauce was sweet and the dry rub was overcooked very dry. But that doesn't necessarily reflect on the rest of the food. The Wicked Monk rocks! I've been there 3 or 4 over the past 2 or so years. The food is always delicious. The buffalo chicken mac and cheese is fantastic; I'm glad it's a staple on their menu now. It's a huge portion and comes in a cast iron pan. They also have this yummy drink called Wake and Bake, I believe - iced coffee, Kahlua and Baileys. Also, spicy pickle backs - heck yeah. The staff and bartenders have always been pleasant and helpful. I've come with only one other person as well as with a group of 12-15 people. The decor is nice as well. There is a lot of stain glass and interesting (but not overwhelming or too in your face) religious statues. Definitely work checking out. November 2016 - I went here for brunch (11am-3pm) for the first time. It was great. It wasn't that busy, for a Sunday. They have great cheese burgers & great fries (I usually don't eat fries!) The spinach & beet salad is very good as is the potato leek soup. My hubby likes the chicken pot pie. The Mac & Cheese is very good, but very heavy. The portions are big on the Mac & cheese but this dish is not good as left overs bc M&C doesn't reheat well. I don't order this anymore. Went here for an early dinner with my wife first impression very clean and pretty unique decor. I had the spring roll filled with corn beef and cheese very delicious. My wife app was crab cakes nice flavor. For our entree we ordered Shepard pie and the special sword fish both were very good. Excellent food and service. The "mini" shepherd's pie on the prix fixe menu is a generous portion - the regular size must be gigantic. It features lovely, super tender braised lamb and roasted carrots in a savory sauce, topped with creamy pureed potatoes perfectly browned on top. My husband had the outstanding pork tenderloin. I come here often and not just because I live nearby. This is a great bar and it was even before they moved to this location. I do like it even more now because they serve food and this place is much larger. I came here to watch all the games during the hockey playoffs and I had such a good time. The food is delicious. My favorite items on the menu are the mac and cheese and turkey burgers, yum! They have a good selection of beer, and if you feel like having a mixed drink, I think they make those well too. Really nice dark wood monastery vibe that's totally unexpected from being in a small commercial strip. I love this place! The bartenders are always super friendly and inviting. You can go one of two ways here; they have a rotating list of specialty beers that is the best I've seen in this corner of Bay Ridge as well as some fantastic stalwarts like Duvel. On the other hand they have bottles of Bud and cheap shots if you choose to go that route. Either way there will be zero attitude from the welcoming staff. Their smaller bar food menu is full of well priced and well prepared dishes. The wings are great for sure. Be sure to look up if you're at the bar to check out the crazy amazing mural on the ceiling. I would give this place a 5th star but occasionally the music is a bit much for me. Please understand that this is me being a stodgy guy in his 40s as it works for everyone else. Any bar that has as equal amount of women and men at the bar is doing a lot right so maybe I'll get over myself and give 'em the 5th they deserve. read more
