The wine grotto has figured out its kinks since opening. Love that I have seen the evolution with food and service too. We started off with cocktails. There is a sommelier if you need a little help figuring out what to drink. The food is on point. If you look at all the pictures I have posted from the wine grotto. The flatbread a couple of years ago to now, omg... the mushroom flatbread with ground waygu is fantastic! The buttery crust plus the surprise of waygu. Can't go wrong!! The thing that I was struck by first before I was even seated, was the furniture that their designer had selected. I want to take home so many other chairs. My friend and I sat at a high top by the bar. It was very nice and private and chill. They have a nice selection of flatbreads and shareable. I'm kicking myself now for not having something to eat because I go back and look at the pictures on yelp and I'm like what was I thinking? The one selection is extensive, I guess you would expect that at a wine grow out, huh? This is a me thing, not a damn thing, but I wish there were more Chardonnay selections. Gorgeous tasting room in the basement of St. John's Resort. Extensive selection of wines by the bottle. I would like to see more wines by the glass, but the ones we had were very good. Food menu is the usual suspects of small plates - cheese, charcuterie and the like - but there is also an extensive ($40!) chocolate plate, if you are in the market for dessert. Chill ambient electronic music provides the soundtrack. Seats are a combination of club chairs, couches, a couple high top communal tables, and the bar. Serious medieval castle vibes going on with the decor. Unlike a castle, it is not at all drafty - almost oppressively toasty - so I recommend layers. read more

What a great addition to Saint John's! The Wine Grotto is a newly opened wine bar located on the lower level of Saint John's. Very cool & intimate space with European wine cellar vibes. They offer an impressive wine list with delicious small plates to share. We had a reservation and were seated right away--I'd definitely recommend making one. The Wine Grotto also hosts private parties, so it's a good idea to check ahead to ensure they're open. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive! The sommelier helped guide us toward the perfect bottle of wine. He was very educated and really listened to our wine preferences when helping us choose a bottle. It was clear he was passionate about his craft, which made the process both enjoyable and educational. For bites, we ordered the mac and cheese, charcuterie, and meatballs. The charcuterie board was outstanding, with an excellent selection of cheeses and meats to choose from. The Pork Belly Gochujang Mac N Cheese was a creative and flavorful twist that stood out. Unfortunately, the meatballs were a bit of a letdown--dry and lacking in flavor. Overall, I'd recommend visiting The Wine Grotto. Be sure to check out a night when they feature live music! read more

When it comes to chocolate, is there such a thing as overkill? I ask because on the menu at the Grotto is an incredible $36 Chocolate Charcuterie platter overflowing with chocolate-caramel bar, truffles, gourmet San Francisco chocolates, dipped strawberries, pretzels, ganache, and more. Our group of four couldn't finish it, and after we offered some to the other three couples with us, there still were a few pieces left after we paid our bill and left. The Grotto was fantastic- stunning decor, beautifully decorated, impeccably serviced, with enough excellent food and wine to make you feel like royalty. Secret gem at Saint John's. This place is so beautiful inside! Pictures won't do it justice, it's so pretty. The wine list is expectedly impressive. We tried a reasonable priced bottle that was wonderful. The food is something to write home about, which surprised me. Specifically, the poached pear salad - just wow. Shout out to Susan the hostess who was able to get us in last minute and was so nice and fun to talk to. Also, John, the GM is a class-act. What a cozy place to grab some drinks and snacks. It is tucked away in the basement of the resort, but there are easy to follow signs. And once you arrive, you easily forget that you're inside a hotel. It has a lovely velvety vault feel to it, and on a Saturday night, it was full of people. Service was excellent, big comfy chairs, great wine selection and yummy snacks. We had the whipped ricotta and it was so delicious - light and creamy with toasted pine nuts, pomegranate seeds, herbs, honey and balsamic drizzle. An excellent bite before we headed to dinner at 5ive Steakhouse upstairs. Carolyn was an excellent hostess - we were greeted very warmly, and she was smiling all evening. Beautiful space and helpful staff. I tried calling to make a reservation and it kept going to a voicemail. We had reservations at Five, the steak house upstairs. We were offered a table with no seats due to a private party. We were happy to take what we could get. We only had drinks here. They were delicious. The Inn at St. John's is a beautiful place to visit. I have been wanting to try the grotto for a while and I can say it was ok. They were out of both dishes we ordered so we settled on chips and wine. Hard to judge a place based on that but the bartenders were nice and friendly. read more

So disappointed in the Wine Grotto Bar for several reasons. Although charming, this was underneath a chapel and home to a former monastery the Grotto is something to see. The seating was very uncomfortable (chairs and sofa). We four were seated at a very tiny table which wobbled. Thankfully we were only having cocktails & wine. Can't imagine where the server would have placed food/appetizers had we ordered any. Service was slow, the blue cheese stuffed olives in my martini tasted old and I got a very upset tummy within the hour. The server tried her best, but management and bar staff need to step it up, pay attention and not over book. We booked this reservation 2 months in advance. A waste of our time and money. The ambiance was beautiful and unique. The wine and food were very good. The tables were awful and ackward! Very small tables would be fine if you were just drinking, but if you order food there's not enough room. Also, the tables were slippery and uneven and the plates were sliding off. One of our wine glasses fell and broke. Also ackward sitting on a coach and trying to eat dinner on a table. I think they should have an area for drinking and separate areas if you want to eat with chairs and a large table that is functional. The staff told us they are working on getting larger, better tables so will definitely be back in a few months to try again because otherwise it was great! read more

Very rude, unfriendly hostess. Ugh. Arrived 10 minutes early for my 5 o'clock reservation with a friend. Stood at hostess stand at bottom of the stairs. Heard 3 people laughing in a separate room A person came out a stated my time and reservation, no greeting, was escorted across the entire space to an outside space to a bench, by a luggage receptacle, given a wine menu, and told because their was a team meeting I was to wait out there. I have been to hundreds of restaurants in the world and never been treated that way. Shane on you. Get some class! read more

I took my family for an after-dinner drink around 8:30 pm. I was amazed at how rude the manager was to our party. I understand reservations are required and we were offered a small standing table. The place was about 50% full. One of the waitresses said we could sit at a 5-top and it was open. After about 10 minutes the manager (lime green dress) came over and was extremely rude and told us to get up and out of the seats. We told her the waitress said it was okay and she did not care. The reservations for the table were for 10 pm. She was so rude that I am shocked she manages such an establishment. Her tone and demeanor were unacceptable particularly when she was 20 yrs my junior. I can't help it if there is poor communication with her staff. She better get better bedside manners or more people will get turned off by this place. I don't plan on going back anytime soon. read more

The ambiance of this place is unique, and kind of cozy. Perfect for intimate dates, or quick drinks. This place is somewhat like a speakeasy for wine lovers. Although, they do have other beverage choices if wine isn't your thing. I loved the feeling of it. They have a limited menu of "small plates, and shareables." Definitely not a meal kind of place. However, if you don't mind spending $$$$ you could get a bunch of small plates and potentially get full. They have a large selection of wines, the only downfall is that only a handful of them are by the glass. The rest are priced for bottle only. They also charge a pretty hefty buck for one glass. Also, If you are interested in taking a bottle home, I would highly recommend searching if it is carried elsewhere first. They were up charging a bottle of wine for $80 that we liked, and found it at Nino Savagios for less than $40. Overall though, the place was very enjoyable, the food we got was very tasty, and service was spot on. We probably would only go maybe once a year because it is so pricy, but a cool spot to check out if ever in the area for sure! read more
