I visited The Wine House in Fairfax with a friend last night. The server was attentive, but also understood that we were moving slow and taking our time. We felt no need to rush. We both tried the Sauvignon Blanc and enjoyed it. We ordered the baguette with three dips. The bread was warm and the dips were very favorable. I didn't expect to get a whole baguette, but we did and we couldn't finish it. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits for her main and I ordered the short ribs, which came with roasted brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. There was a large group of us for dinner (about 10 people). There was some confusion at first if we had a reservation. Turns out we didn't. But they had another large group that was in the process of leaving, and after about 25 minutes we got our table. Great selection of wines from all around the world (it is called The Wine House, after all!). After settling in, I decided on the Faroe Island Salmon. Yes, wild caught salmon from the Faroe Islands. Say what? Those are remote islands to have fresh catch flown in regularly. It's also probably not the most environmentally friendly. But...it was delicious. Delicate but cooked through, and wonderful flavor and creamy sauce. I'm from the land of good salmon (the Pacific Northwest), and have been known to catch my own, but this was some of the best salmon I've ever had. Try it! read more

I enjoyed this place (that is, once I figured out how to get there). The parking garage was a bit strange. It's at the P4 level but a bit strange since when you step out out the garage, you're actually at street level. Anyway about the restaurant...the gage can extensive collection of wine which you can purchase and then drink with your meal (I think there's a cork fee). My friend and I opted to do the bottomless mimosas instead. Too bad they only had the traditional mimosas with orange juice and no other option. The menu had plenty of great sounding dishes so it took me a while to decide what to order. I ended up choosing the shrimp and grits and my friend got the organic cheeseburger. Shrimp and grits had tons of flavor and a good portion of shrimp. I liked it a lot EXCEPT for two things. One, the sausage with it was very dry and almost tough to eat. Also the dish came out not very warm at all. And since we were eating outside, it cooled off very quickly. So cold cheese grits just didn't taste right after a few minutes. My friend's burger was really good. I got a bite of it and the meat was so juicy and the brioche bun paired well with it. The fries were seasoned well and had a good crunch but soft inside. We got the dark chocolate terrine with hazelnut anglaise for dessert. The cake was a bit dense but I like the toasted hazelnuts and the sauce was good. Overall good time at this place. I personally ordered the charcuterie to start, with roasted duck and Grafton cheese, and it was absolutely delicious. The Chipotle Rubbed Ahi Tuna entree was honestly jawdropping good - fish was perfectly cooked medium, the squash compote sweet and tangy and the harissa oil adding the right amount of . To close, I got the tiramisu which was super yummy as well. For the $$, the value is incredible. Such a cute little spot in downtown Fairfax! A hidden gem for sure. Four of us grabbed wine and dinner on a Friday night and it was busy, but not overly crowded. The braised short ribs were really good. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts that came with it too. Only complaint I would have about the meal was it was a little too salty for my taste. The passionfruit creme brûlée was an interesting take on creme brûlée. I liked it but wouldn't get it over regular creme brûlée again. And of course, the wine was good! I'd definitely come back for drinks again. read more

Took my friend here for her birthday dinner and we had an enjoyable experience. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. The restaurant does not face the street directly but is right next to the bridal shop, behind the fountain. The food we had was cooked well and good portion sizes were given. I ventured in on a lark on Valentines Day and the bar wasn't too crowded so found a seat. The staff was friendly and pleasant behind the bar. was surprised the only menu option was a 99 dollar prix fare menu but that was ok it was a holiday. what was less than ok was the food. the soup was tepid at best and the fish dry... the gnocchi was drowned in cream much like the soup. reliance on so much cream is frequently an attribute of cuisine trying to look rich but having no idea how to balance flavors. I was disheartened that my entree was brought out and left before I was even done my appetizer with not even an offer to keep it warm or wait ... at a restaurant charging these prices? should never happen. especially at the cost of food/service these days. the bread pudding was fine but not epic. again... overreliance on cream and I like cream! but it's smashes what should be the moisturizing richness of the pudding. then the ultimate insult. upon paying with my card they charged a 3 percent credit card fee. absurd and embarrassing. a restaurant at the price point of 40 dollar entrees and 16 dollar glasses of wine should not need to charge for using a card especially since i assume few customers are paying those bills in cash. underwhelming. the place wouldn't last 2 weeks in the District and as a longtime VA suburb resident there are far better choices read more

It was hard to beat this great combination of food, wine and atmosphere. Two friends and I had never been but felt like exploring someplace new, and the very name "The Wine House" kinda sold itself. Outdoor space is first-come-first-serve but we were fortunate to get a table outside. Our waitress was very attentive and was happy to give recommendations. We started with a cheese plate with a bottle of Sancerre. Then we had our own meals with an Italian red. Had a great Restaurant Week brunch today. Our server was very sweet and attentive, and helped us have a great experience. The three of us each had our own charcuterie appetizer. They all came with grapes, walnuts, sliced apples, cherry jam, bread and crackers. I enjoyed the pate and Camembert combo. My main choice was chipotle rubbed ahi tuna with mango salsa and asparagus. I thought it was excellent. Found the harissa oil that rimmed the plate a little two spicy, so I avoided it. My daughter loved her burger and frites (especially the aioli), and my husband enjoyed his crab cake eggs Benedict. For dessert, 2 of us had the light and tasty tiramisu. Went for Fairfax Restaurant Week and this place looked appealing with their restaurant week menu! Very cozy atmosphere and kind staff. Started off with the Frozen Rose wine - pretty good, just had to make it melt a little in order to drink it! Stronger than what it seems. I got the Gazpacho for the appetizer, it was delicious! It was very flavourful and tasty, although I wish the parmesan crostini was a little bigger so I could eat more of it with the Gazpacho. Probably my favourite part of the three course meal. I got the Duck Confit as the entrée, which came with potatoes and beans. I thought the potatoes and beans were pretty good even though I don't typically eat those sides with duck. The duck itself was good, although leaning more towards a standard cooked duck for me personally. I ended my meal with the Tiramisu, which was also standard but also great - nice and fluffy; not too sweet either. It's a nice place I'd recommend to others! read more

This small restaurant filled with wine bottles has great delicious food. We got the short rib with asparagus. The asparagus was perfectly done with a crush, but soft and there is a light garlic taste to it to give it a delicious flavor. The best asparagus I have had compared to many restaurants. The short rib was soft and juicy and had a great flavor. We also got the crab cakes which is a decent size and it came with string beans which were also cooked perfectly and with a tasty light flavor. We have just had the prefix menu for restaurant week and ordered the pork belly with mashed potatoes and that was delicious. The pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and also very delicious. The crab cake with potatoes were delicious with some garlic seasoning. The crab takes had very little filler and was deliciously browned. Absolutely love the ambiance of this spot! Nestled in the corner of the Old Town Plaza in Fairfax. There's a large selection of wines available for retail purchase lined along the interior wall as soon as you enter the restaurant. My party started off with two of the charcuterie offerings, which provided plenty as a starter for the five of us. Our server Ashleigh was amazing! Such a welcoming presence, great smile, and provided wonderful suggestions for anybody torn between choosing different entrees. The table also shared a bottle of the Cafayate Malbec (Argentina) I, myself, had the Hapuka, which was on the Father's Day menu. Hapuka is a New Zealand Sea Bass. This was paired with pearl couscous and mixed vegetables. It was delicious! I definitely recommend this place for small groups, date night, or even just a wine tasting. read more

Went today for restaurant week lunch set menu with a group of co-workers. The food was ok, but not good enough that I'd go back again to eat. One person ordered a burger medium rare, it came out well done. He ate it and didn't complain, so obviously it wasn't able to be corrected by staff. Co workers seemed to like their food well enough and lunch was $25 for the set price menu which is fine. There was an auto gratuity of 20%, which we knew about beforehand. This was a 3 course lunch, and the restaurant was about 60% full. Each time food arrived to the table, brought mostly by the host, she would stand next to where I was sitting and say "I've got a xxxx" then I would proceed to tell them who ordered it and either she walked around the table to deliver it, or we'd slide it around to the right person. This occurred over three courses, times seven people. I found myself wondering if anybody who worked there was even trying to keep track of who ordered what, and why am I the one directing everybody around, and what is this 20% gratuity for? The server was very nice, but she was not around much, assuming working other tables. Maybe I'm grouchy but the service was on par with what you get at a fast food place when they have to take a little extra time to make your hot fries and then bring it out to you. Anyway, I might go back for some wine, but the service was lacking and food not memorable. read more

I would've probably still tried it (because of the flattery) but would've thought twice. Came here on a Friday evening with a party of three. Weather was perfect 70ish so we sat outside. Service was great and the noise level was low. This is a wine house with awesome food. This is what we got: Blue cheese, duck, prosciutto, cow cheese, brussel sprouts and mussels in blue cheese sauce. Everything tasted great and nothing was too salty. We also selected a wine from a wall full of wines. We selected the Revelry. Can you slave away cooking food that taste the same? Probably. Difference is when we get the check we see $10 charge for each dessert! Asked the waitress about it, said rising costs caused them to make it a 2 course menu. Then why put it on the menu at all?? Because they are counting on you to order it! I never would have ordered dessert at all, especially the tiny little ramekin of crème brûlée that should have been under $5. The hostess was rude and accused us of lying when we had a request and she stated that she "would have never let things slide like that" we have literally been coming here since this restaurant has opened. We have friends who like this restaurant for weekend brunch and meet them there occasionally. The weekend brunch includes several fixed price items in addition to a regular menu. The fixed price choices consist of a starter, entree, and dessert. Diners can pick an item from each of the three sets of available selections. I had the beet salad starter, shrimp and grits entree, and creme caramel dessert. All were very good. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside although it was hot, and the sun was bearing down. The tables have umbrellas but don't completely block the moving sun. Two of the diners seated at the next table were smokers. Their table bordered on the fence that marked the outdoor area. Although they technically went out of the designated area, they stood by their table. Their smoke blew into our area. But with all of this going for it, what made me want to write this review was to call out the amazing service from Theresa. She was warm and friendly but very quickly realized the first date scenario and privately offered me a code word in case I needed it. She also offered me a small sample to occupy me while I waited for my date to arrive.
