This was my favorite place to take guests. Good drinks, free pool, beautiful view of Bellevue and Seattle. So sad to learn it closed.

Bar with a view! Food with a view! Happy hour with a view!! You will stop here at some point if you play here or visit here. It's the quieter part of this club. Beautiful high ceiling! Bright expansive balcony!! So many selfies and pics are taken here!! They have pool tables, a small bar and massive couches. It's a big spot with a lot of spaces. Service can be slow but you don't come here to rush. The drinks are pretty good. They'll even accommodate your crazy cappuccinos request without having a machine up here! Thanks guys :) You can get the buffet brought up here during brunch time for that quieter dining experience! I love coming here for drinks. They used to have tables outside during nice weather time. It's almost secret, but not quite, and that's a huge part of what makes it so cool. You climb forever up winding suburban roads to get here, and before you even see the buildings, you can tell why people like it up here--you can see for miles and miles and miles. There's acres of parking, and the clubhouses (or whatever they call the primary structures at golf courses) are just grand enough. Lots of advanced landscaping, nice big proscenium where you can let people out so they can stay dry while (or the valets) park the car. The kids who work here are super friendly. It wasn't until I was already opening another door that I realized one of them was trying to be nice and hold the door for me. Leave it to me to make even that simple exchange momentarily awkward. You head up the immaculate wall to wall carpet on the dark wooden stairs and down a short hallway that appear to reach nothing more than mechanical closets and the women's lockers, but it turns out that the door at the end actually leads to a cool bar. There's a little bronze plaque, smaller than, say, the face plate of a car stereo, that explains you've arrived at The Wooly Toad. And so you have. You think you're going to see mop buckets or something, but instead there's more wall to wall, overstuffed brown leather sofas, soaring ceilings, exposed beams, scattered tables and highboys, a pool table, and big windows aimed at that miles-deep view of the lake, the city, and the mountains. It's a grand setting that avoids hammering you with any undue formality. Plenty of people come in from the links in shorts and short-sleeved shirts, and they're right at home. The bar is more like a pass-through window, but you can clearly see an array of spirits bottles and whatnot. They have a short tap list for beer drinkers, some wines, cocktails, and so on. They have a selection of appetizers and pub grub, and you also have the option of ordering from the grill menu prepared downstairs. The grill stuff is pretty expensive, and the pub menu is certainly not bargain-oriented, but it's fair to say the pub menu does offer some value. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, and suchlike. The servers here seem impossibly young, but then more and more people seem impossibly young to me these days. They're friendly and they're right on point throughout the evening: waters full, orders taken, drinks replaced as soon as they empty. This isn't really a destination for anything the kitchen offers, nor for anything the bar offers. They do a rock-solid job but you've probably had a Manny's and a well-made burger before, likely in a location that's even closer to your house. But the ambiance and the view here add enough that it's worth a visit. When they built this, the club intended it to be a smoking lounge. This happened before the state passed laws about public smoking, and now nobody lights up here anymore. The balcony isn't far enough from the doors, and indoors isn't a legal option. But they built a big walk-in humidor, once upon a time, with a rolling library ladder and big oaken drawers from floor to ceiling, facing glass doors. It's a gorgeous showcase for cigars no one lights these days, though they'll still happily rent you a drawer for your sticks. There's a framed Cigar Aficionado cover with Arnold Schwarzenegger's autograph next to it. They do want to make the cigar lover feel welcome, even if he has to leave the lighter in his pocket the whole time he's here. It's a shame, really--I don't even golf, let alone live nearby, but if I could smoke on the balcony, I'd probably come in quite a bit. read more

The Calcutta Grill is doing some great things with what I consider Northwest Cuisine, but The Wooly Toad is the hidden gem that people should be talking about! This place is any guy's dream man cave. Dark stained wood, leather couches, poker table, pool table, plasma tv with sports always on, vaulted ceilings with gorgeous wood beams, and an outdoor patio with spectacular views of both courses and the highly coveted views of Seattle and Lake Washington. It's a great place to settle your bets made from your golf round over a beer. They are also serving up some great pub food! I particularly like the mac 'n cheese made with Beecher's cheese or the fish 'n chips. Even if you don't golf come in here on a sunny day and enjoy the view with some great pub food and cold brews. read more

It was one of those nights where I just didn't feel like hurrying home. I had just finished a delicious dinner at the Calcutta Grill and it was pouring rain. The manager suggested that me and my friends check out The Wooly Toad. Up a flight of steps and down a short hallway the Wooly Toad stands. We were alone. The TV showed the football game, but it was the only noise. Five minutes later the bartender appeared. He told us to sit anywhere. He suggested we play games. We ended up playing pool and watching the football game while sipping on cocktails. It was like having my own game room / bar. I was absolutely delighted! The drink was good. The service nice. I can't speak to the view since it was pouring down rain. I all sorts of love it. read more

Consistently poor service and mediocre food. The Wooly Toad is worse than the Calcutta Grill which would also rate a one Star. If you are female they won't take your order or seat you until a male joins you. If you want silverware with your meal you need to ask for it or, as I needed to do, go into the kitchen and get it. The location is fabulous but if they can't figure out service and get a better chef, this will never be the hot spot it should be. read more

Hello secret bar hidden away at the Newcastle golf club! Where have you been all my life? This was not my first time visiting the golf club so I was quite surprised to find a quaint little bar hidden away in the upstairs of the Calcutta Grill. Service was excellent and food was pretty good. I am definitely coming back for more and explore the menu a little bit more. The view would be pretty amazing. At the time of my visit the murky Seattle weather covered the entire view but I used my imagination and tried to picture the sunny scenery of Seattle and Bellevue that I would've seen on a summer's day. The layout and décor was just classy. I think I saw some pool tables but I wasn't paying too much attention. I would definitely be impressed if a date brought me here. read more

4 stars if you can find a table on the deck at happy hour. Down times are best for faster service. Menu is not vast, but sufficient but the kicker is the private club feel and climb up an inconspicuous set of stairs to this cellar. It can leave an impression on guests. read more

Okay, when it comes to secrets, this is the best one in town! Why in the world would you meet friends at a coffee shop when the Wooly Toad is open! Great place to go for desserts, happy hour specialst, even working on your laptop in a nice comfy chair next to the fireplace, pool table, and plasma screen! Better than home! read more

Did not have a chance to try the food because we left due to the bad service. Came in snd there were two tables waiting for food and two tables eating. We sat down at a table and enjoyed the view expecting to be greeted. After about ten minutes no one had even glanced our way as they passed us with food. We began to wonder if we were supposed to order up at the bar. My friend went to order a couple of iced teas and asked to look at a menu. The person behind the bar gave a heavy sigh and said, "Where are you sitting?" She told him and he said "Well give us a minute ma'am" in a really exasperated tone. She came back to the table (he didn't give her the iced teas) and we waited again. When no one came out even to acknowledge us after another 10 minutes we got up and left. What a wonderful hidden little gem! I stopped in here tonight after a last minute quick dinner at Calcutta Grill downstairs. I was just in time for the 4th of July fireworks from the balcony. What a gorgeous view! The place itself is old school but charming, has games to play, a cozy fireplace and lovely ambiance. It isn't cheap but they aren't stingy either. Talk about a heavy pour! I can't wait to come here on a winter night for a hot toddy with some friends. read more

I previously wrote about Wooly Toad's stuffy and humorless male servers. Last time I went, to my surprise, our server was funny, engaging and attentive. I also forgot how shockingly awesome the view from the patio is on a sunny day. Easily the best view on the Eastside. read more

We had stopped here to have an appetizer and a drink or two. There were three of us mid evening. There were 2 stools at a pub table, the waitress said there were no more stools. It was not by any means full in there. She offered no other help, did not ask if we wanted a drink, or any other type of conversation. I cannot judge the food as none was offered. We will not go back there, very unfriendly. It appears to be a fun place, beautiful view of the course and normally golf courses cater to a lot of different people so I find them a good choice to visit. Maybe it was just a bad night for the server, who knows but no second chance here. read more

The Wooly Toad is at the Newcastle Golf Club, upstairs from the Calcutta Grill with whom I believe they share a kitchen. It has a consciously old-fashioned country club atmosphere, with a humidor taking up one entire wall, and some of the best views in the region. The prices are high and the food is better than average, but if you come during happy hour there are some ridiculously good deals. What a fun place to eat & drink. read more

No more happy hour here anymore...just obscenely high prices to pay for the view. Food is boring and bad...avoid the calamari. Won't be going here anymore; $7 beer and $12 cocktails aren't worth it at this suburban outpost. read more

I love the ambiance here and food is great too. My husband and I were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves for most of a date night. Then the bagpipes played outside and they were beautiful. It can be crowded too, you take your chances. read more

I love to unwind in this place and do some work on Wifi while sipping a good scotch. The atmosphere here is great... comfy leather and fabric chairs, a big fireplace, free billiards, and a great view from the balcony. The staff is very friendly and attentive, making every visit a pleasure. They have a good selection of scotch and other drinks with a menu that has a lot of good choices from the restaurant on the first floor. read more
