Who doesn't want to dine with a view of one of Washington's premiere golf courses with one of the most spectacular views in the entire state? Located at the The Golf Club at Newcastle, The Calcutta Grill is an English-style pub that has both indoor and outdoor dining with a view of the pristinely manicured golf course that also has their own bagpipe player signify the sun setting every weekend day during the summer season, along the course as well, which makes for an entertaining way to enjoy a meal. I had actually visited The Golf Club at Newcastle before, just to see the sun going down and watch the sunset bagpipe player play his traditional tune and walk around just as the sun started to set. I was recently back to enjoy a hearty dinner with a colleague and as luck would have it we would get a table while out on their terrace to watch the sun set and the bagpipe player set the scene while dining. Getting to The Calcutta Room at Newcastle was the biggest challenge, as rideshare is very pricey in the Seattle region, but achievable nevertheless. Upon arrival since I was meeting my friend here, and they had already arrived, I was told to venture out to the terrace on my own and wander around and look for them instead of being guided to where they were sitting. The dinner menu at The Calcutta Grill is separated into categories including Small Plates, From the Kettle (or Soups), Starter Salads, Signature Salads, Burgers & Sandwiches, Anytime Favorites, Signature Plates, their special Chef Inspired Features, and their Beverage menu. My dining mate and I decided to both get their smaller Classic Caesar Salad to start our meal. Upon my dining mates suggestion, as he has been here many times before, he suggested we split their Calamari Fritti small plate entrée, which were calamari rings and octopus dipped in a semolina crust and buttermilk and served with lemon, fried parsley and a roasted garlic aioli dipping sauce. For our entrée, it was suggested by our server that we order their Cajun Pasta which was their penne pasta served with grilled chicken, prawns, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, spinach, and topped with their cajun cream sauce and aged parmesan. Served with grilled focaccia it was truly a hearty dish. Being able to take in the warmer weather, at least for the Seattle region, was a real treat as we waited for our food. Our calamari came out first, as they were crispy and crunchy and served with a grilled lemon and tartar sauce for dipping. The perfect way to start our meal was that when our salads came out, I was already satiated but still ready to go with the way that they stylized their version of a Caesar Salad, as it was a simple salad with shaved parmesan and no anchovies. The pasta entrée was the real star of our meal with plenty of hearty ingredients including a number of butterflied and grilled shrimp and chunks of grilled chicken, served with two toasted slices of sourdough bread complete with grill marks on it, this was a meal unto itself. Dining at The Calcutta Grill was a complete experience especially when their resident bagpipe player came to personally entertain us and take a picture with us. Our total bill was a little over 110 dollars before you consider tax and gratuity. By offering a selection of some of the Pacific Northwest's favorite foods in a relaxed, charming setting with uninterrupted panoramic views while dining on their patio, The Calcutta Grill is a special place to enjoy a nice meal. read more

Came here for brunch and had an amazing time! The waiter was really nice and recommended a great bottle of champagne for mimosas that saved us a tad bit of money over getting individual mimosas. The Benedict was great! The burgers were delicious. And so were the pancakes. But best of all is the view. Being able to see Seattle and Bellevue as you lounge over breakfast and mimosas is unbeatable hear. The only suggestion I can think of is to lean into brunch a bit more and expand the menu for breakfast a bit. Because of the negative reviews about food quality, we were skeptical after making the reservation. And let me tell you guys, I was quite pleasantly surprised. The appetizers (potato bravas and fried Brussels sprouts) were fantastic. Even my picky kiddo wiped his plate clean. For entrees I ordered the parsnip potato soup, which was very hearty and filling. For that I ordered a side of grilled focaccia but i was given regular bread toast. No big deal. Cajun pasta was super okay. It was too spicy and the flavors seemed a little off. The veggie burger was well presented and good. Garlic fries were the best. Mac and cheese was pretty alright. Good wine selections too. I got the Chloe Prosecco which went well with the meal. Loved the decor. It has a very comforting vibe to it. Very polite and sweet staff. For a restaurant of this level, the food quality could be better. Probably the issue is the lack of consistency. Our party of two arrived well in time for our open table reservation and we were promptly seated and our brunch cocktails were brought soon after we placed the order along with our brunch (food order.) An hour and 20 mins into our time at the table, no wait staff came to check if we wanted another beverage and parties seated on the patio after our party received their food orders before. This is not the same Calcutta GrIll that I enjoyed pre-pandemic and i don't feel that for the rates they charge, that the service and food offerings are on par. Seattle has been having some beautiful May weather so we visited on a 80 degree Friday evening. This place is known for the views and we were had prime patio seating reserved. Service was pleasant and attentive so we were off to a great start. 10/10 for atmosphere and service! We ordered the Garlic Parm Fries by way of the waitresses, she said it would be the fastest to come out - 5/10 the were nothing special, could have totally passed on these. Frozen fries with shredded Parmesan cheese that hardly stuck to the fries and lacked flavor. For our entrees we ordered the Pacific Cod & Chip, again lacked flavor, not even salt 5/10 but on a positive note I will save the serving size was appropriate for $29 at a golf course pub. We also ordered the Cajun Pasta which had the most flavor of all the dishes but wasn't worth taking home 6/10. Overall, I wouldn't return for the food but if you want decent drinks, great views and solid service I would give them a shot. We seen families with children playing at a smaller course below the patio, a wedding party and even people walking their dog all during our dining experience. Gorgeous place. The view is so beautiful and is the best thing about this restaurant. I decided to order the Cajun pasta and wow...it was really expensive and really bad. Did it taste alright? Yeah. But it's crazy that I can one hundred percent do better pasta than them. The sauce was really watery and thin. Chicken was dry, but it was tasty. Cajun pasta with barely any Cajun flavor. Shrimp was actually good though. It's almost like they pour water into the pasta before serving it. Service was good. Our waitress was nice and she came back to check on us a couple of times. Overall, if it wasn't for what I perceive to be a junk fee, how they calculated their recommended tip, and what I believe is a high surcharge amount for tables of 6 or more, I would give this restaurant a 4 to 5 star review. I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times and might do so in the future. The food and service is usually solid and the view is fantastic during daylight hours. My gripe has to due with what I call junk fees businesses pass through to their customers. Junk fees to me are surcharges passed through to customers that are separate from the listed prices such as resort fees, living wage fees, fuel surcharges, and in the case of this business, a kitchen service charge. This restaurant adds on a 1.6% kitchen service charge to be paid to their hourly cooks and dishwashers. I do not support this charge. I feel businesses should incorporate these into their listed prices. When they give you a receipt, it lists recommended tip amounts based on a percent of the total charge for 20%, 22%, and 24%. The total charge includes the kitchen service charge and sales tax, so their recommendation is to tip on a service charge and sales tax. I believe tips should never be based on service charges and sales tax. Sales tax is a tax and not a service. I think if anyone should be tipped for sales tax, that would be the state of Washington, and I am not tipping the state. The same for the service charge which is for specific kitchen labor; I am not tipping the server for a surcharge on someone else's services. Last, I feel the recommended tip amounts should include one for 18%. While the tip can be adjusted to a custom amount, I think their suggested tipping on sales tax and service charges may be overlooked. Last, for parties of 6 or more, they tack on a 24% auto-gratuity. 24% seems very high to me. read more

Where I gave this a one star was all thanks to Emily - our waitress. It was Mother's Day and we went for brunch. We were forgotten for almost an hour after ordering. When we asked Emily she told us all the tables wait that long but we weren't blind and where were 4 of us - seeing all the tables getting their food in less than 30 mins. In fact a big table of over 8 people sat down after us - 20 mins - got their food before us. Not sure what was the deal with lying but no apology or anything. That left a bad taste for our time and I hope the mgr read this and train their people to be honest and decent people who can live up to a mistake and just apologize vs outright lying to make it seems like it's just our problem. read more

This is an update to my much needed outdated review. I visited this restaurant today after golf and we were seated in the outdoor patio area. It was a beautiful day and the view (Seattle to the left and Downtown Bellevue to the right) here is just ...amazing. I ordered the burger again and they now use Painted Hills beef. Which I know is very good quality but I personally feel that all restaurants that use painted Hills beef for their burgers offer quite "dry" patties. Maybe grass-feed beef... is just dry. Also the patties were slightly under seasoned and the bacon had a bit too much peppery taste. But overall it was pretty decent. Fries were excellent. Our server was very pleasant and nice. No complaints there. I would give this place a 3.5 stars but Yelp doesn't allow me to do so. I rounded the rating up a half due to the amazing location and view. read more

This is a great place to chill locally with an amazing view. I also love sitting in the bar, and the patio or the dining room. Typically the food is very delicious. I recently had the king salmon BLT for almost $30 and I wouldn't say it was that great though. I used to have it several years ago and it was the best sandwich I have had and it was $17. Way more flavorful back then but most everything else is good. I've had some very good tacos, burgers, and seafood (scallops were amazing) dishes. $27 for a burger. Yikes! I've been to Calcutta multiple times in the past, but I don't recall the prices being this steep. The least expensive entree on the menu was $26 and if you want an entree salad, the price ranges from $29 to $34...for a salad. In my most recent visit, I had just finished playing a round Sunday morning with my friends and we were famished, so we grabbed a table at the bar. Shoutout to the bartender that day for working so hard because he was the only person working the bar. He took drinks, we had to order at the bar through him, and he took our payment all while the entire bar section was at full capacity. Where were the servers and his support staff? Nobody came to assist his section. He was so busy, it took 30 minutes in between for refills on our drinks and water. As for the food, that took 50+ minutes for it to arrive. We could even see our food underneath the heat lamp waiting for someone to bring it because we were able to see into the kitchen. As my burger arrived, I thought it was pretty good burger. I liked the bun they used, but the burger sat so long, it was no longer medium rare but closer to a medium to medium well. However, I didn't want to send it back because who knows how long it would take. Plus I was just insulted by the price. Was it a solid burger? Yes, but was it worth $27, definitely no and you get very little fries that came with it, which were not the crispiest. Definitely lost its structure while under the heat lamp. Overall, I'm disappointed by the lack of service and menu pricing. There needs to be more staff than the poor bartender doing everything. I hosted my sister team for our Business from out of town and we were greeted with SPECTACULAR views of the Bellevue Skyline. My coworkers were extremely impressed with the ambience. I like to golf and have an Oki Platinum card to save some $ on golf because the Newcastle courses are pretty spendy otherwise but that is a different review for another time. I had the French dip and it was pretty good. Not amazing but it's something we never have at home so it hit the spot. I wish the aus jus had a bit more pop. Other than that - perfectly fine. Granted it was Father's Day, I am not sure if they were understaffed, but they had more than 5 cooks on the kitchen the food came out hot and delicious once received, but it should not take you more that 1-1/2hrs to get you food from the time it is ordered. There were tables that came in were seated after us and finished long before us. When we finished our meal I inquired with our waitress as to why it had taken so long, I asked if she had forgotten to put in our order since other people had been seated served and had left before we even had our meal. She said it was because they had fried food, appetizers and they came up much faster. We ordered fish and chips (if not mistaken that is fried), monte cristo sandwich and fries, hangar steak and hamburger. Not sure how that takes more than 90 min to serve, without even coming by the table to check on us. The manager never even came by to apologize for the delay. For Father's Day we were comped 1 dessert for $12 by the waitress for the delay. The biggest complaint I have is a manager never came by to see how we were doing all while everyone else was receiving their meals and prompt service. The ambiance was nice several empty tables, felt like we may have been in an overflow area and not part of the regular service. Almost like 2nd class citizens. Not sure we would return, I have no problem waiting and understand when service can be slow but often the staff check in and lets you know that you are a valued guest and they are doing their best. We invited some family members to try Calcutta Grill. They had never been here, but it was my fourth time in three years. Sadly, the food was not as good as I remembered and to add to this disappointment, the prices were way too high. I think when customers dine here, it must be to enjoy the view because it's not the food. We spent $167 for four adults. No alcoholic beverages. No dessert. We noticed when we were served our pomegranate and apple salad it had no pomegranate seeds. When we asked the waiter he said the kitchen ran out. Ummmm. Not okay. Decided on this place for a special birthday dinner for my husband. Beautiful night and we sat on the deck to enjoy a leisurely dinner. The Food was fine. Nothing special. Waitress was horrible. I asked for lemon and straw, she forgot. Ok so I asked again and got it. Then we placed our order. I had a small salad which came out immediately. We also ordered an appetizer and entrees. Our entrees came out without appetizer. They did comp the appetizer when we sent the entrees back. And then they re-cooked the entrees. She knew it was a birthday and asked if we wanted dessert. "Yes" she brought then menu and came back, when I tried to order items she said they did not hav that tonight. Not "here is our dessert menu, we don't have XYZ" or "I'm so sorry after what's happened tonight here's more bad news" but just a nope don't have that. Ridiculous. I won't come back. I always stop by Calcutta since it usually has a super nice view along with good food. Located at Newcastle golf course, this restaurant overlooks the course and beyond. It has a small menu, but the food has never disappointed me (I usually go for the fish&chips or the french dip) While it is a little on the pricier side, I'd say it's definitely worth it to stop by, eat, and check out the view!
