One of the most pleasant features of Cushman Market and Cafe is that it is nestled at an important corner in northeast Amherst. You need to travel further west to get to The Mill District and not much opens there early, and there's little else I can recall in the other cardinal directions. It's a pleasant trip, with plenty of parking in front, behind, and in a strip of side road across the street. I've never been in the market, so let me keep talking about the Cafe. The atmosphere of the Cafe is wonderful, with locals, safety officers, and regulars all visiting at each meal hour from breakfast to lunch. Nestled inside what looks like an old barn, complete with doors still hanging, Cushman has memorabilia from decades of music, sports, politics, and news frozen under acrylic, different for many of their tables. The café seems to have at most 20 chairs, and the staff behind the counter will deliver it to your table, call your name, or leave other orders by a stand near the back entrance. Cushman Cafe offers a variety of meals, alongside baked goods and freshly mixed café drinks. While I'm not a fan of the switcherels, I have enjoyed their dirty Chai lattes, iced teas, fresh coffees, and free water if I recall in a pinch. They have gender neutral bathrooms--which is great if you're tired of waiting in line for one of two as they are large but single occupancy. They offer cold panini sandwiches, hot panini, all sorts of eggs, egg sandwiches, and egg breakfasts, vegan and vegetarian options, alongside a seemingly visible carnivorous focus for their new menu's default. If you had a chance to hop on a bus and travel around Amherst, or you were passing through to the highways, Cushman Cafe is worth a quick stop. I've rarely had to wait long for my meals even in busy hours, and this is because of the large and competent kitchen, who--if you'll remember--can get a delicious sandwich right any day of the week. I hope cell service returns there!

What sets this place apart from a local or fast food burger joint, however, is the love for the experience of their food that Royal Chicken & Kebab offers. Receiving your food order from them is a delight. From the way each meal is wrapped, boxed, or sealed, to the way their burgers and subs look unwrapped. I recall the days I used to enjoy a messy local Philly Cheesesteak sub at whatever local sandwich shop I would be at, where the price wasn't about the love and care specifically, as there needed to be an overwhelming level of meat--like, get yourself dirty on a date level as the wrapper was soggy and flowing with cheese. That is part of a local Philly cheese experience, and here, I felt the love for the flavors brought to a wider community, if not the whole world. Here, our local cooks and chefs still make a sub full of steak, cheese, and peppers, but just enough to fit neatly and appealingly within their foil wraps. Each bite of the slightly warm and crispy bun reveal to me how much I still love the flavors of the experience, and don't need the sub to be my only sustenance. You can get your meal with a side of fries and a drink, for example. Royal Chicken & Kebab has a welcoming atmosphere, attention to detail in the quality of their meals, and has yet to let me down in price or service. Very clean, spacious, plenty of outside light and windows. I've only ever had the bagels and coffee and have never been disappointed. I have found the staff to be friendly. They always give my kids and I a cup of water with ice in it and never charge us extra for the water. There is a little area for children to sit at, kid sized tables and a chalkboard on the wall. There is some very comfortable seating, although a few wobbly tables, so we avoid those if we have hot drinks. Bathrooms are always clean and accessible for people in wheelchairs. They have a punchcard for coffee and bagel sandwiches, so after certain amount, you get one free. They have freshly squeezed orange juice, deli sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and serve your own coffee, with a variety of different kinds of coffee. I am very picky about my coffee, and I love theirs! They also have some gluten-free muffins. Lots of natural wood in there, very comfortable place to be in. Very inviting. Much prefer this place to the other bagel place in town. read more

While there, they tried to explain to him what happened - apparently the chef had a different specials list than the specials menu that was given to customers. This does not really explain the mix-up. Plus, it was 11am on a Saturday - near the end of the breakfast period. How did they not realize sooner that the chef and the wait staff had different specials menus? This establishment is a little off the beaten path; you have to make it a destination - something I will not be doing again.
