Super chicken panini and Mac and cheese
Anushka M.

We were staying right next to the works so we decided to try it out. We got the super chicken panini and Mac and cheese, and I got an iced vanilla latte for coffee. Food was really good, especially the panini. Coffee was ok, tasted watered down and a bit artificial. Overall a good quick breakfast spot.

Chicken broccoli pesto Mac and cheese

I really enjoyed the Mac and cheese, ive never had a Mac and cheese feel healthy and truly filling. My boyfriend got the barbecue chicken melt, I took a bite and it was pretty good. The service was good, the workers seemed to get along well. The cafe itself is very quaint, students seem to go there to study and it's not the quietest for those who want a pin drop silent cafe. I personally loved it.

Bacon avocado sandwich

We were looking for outdoor seating, and this had that going for it plus a variety of foods to accommodate for different peoples taste, including a vegetarian. The sandwiches were good and the wuinoa bowls were satisfying. Service is fast and there is a lot of seating, both indoors and outdoors. This is a great café for the town of Amherst. Also it's very conveneient if you have a dog you can sit outside.

Barley soup and Southwestern BBQ grilled sandwich.

I had a great lunch here. I had a southwestern BBQ chicken sandwich and barley soup. Prices are good. Ambience is nice an cozy. Wide selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Ice coffee was great too.

sunrise breakfast burrito
Sophia A.

there are very few things that can be relied on in this world, and the sunrise breakfast burrito is one of them. it's absolutely delightful. every. single. time. a singular bite on the morning after a night on the town will make you want to kiss the chef on the lips. not actually. but like maybe? it's simply that good. (see image two with the burrito remnants.) i cannot recommend this place enough.

I don't know what happened to the order today, but it differs from what I usually get. I ordered online for pick-up ASAP (15 minutes) a cheese, scrambled egg, and sausage breakfast sandwich on dark toasted French batard. Everything was cold, and the bread was lightly toasted. Couldn't eat it because I didn't have access to a toaster or a microwave. I think all workers in each shift should be trained to prepare the food the same way. Hopefully, next time, I'll get the order right so I can continue being a loyal customer.

Ask the Community - The Works Bakery Cafe

Is the outdoor dining safely distanced so that two people can meet, eat and talk at a safe 6-foot distance?

Yes, but you'd be wasting tables doing that. There are only a few tables so it'd be courteous to sit with your party. If you're afraid of your friends perhaps FaceTime them instead.

The exterior captures the New England charm you'd expect. Parking was easy, on-street, and signage easily led us from the entrance of the inn to the restaurant. We were seated in the bar area where you could hear the bartender making conversation with everyone who sat there, while simultaneously making drinks for servers to run to their tables. Both of us felt like having steak, so when our menus were presented, we went straight for it! My nephew had the steak frites, which also came with green beans, and I had the filet mignon, accompanied by mashed potatoes and green beans. The bread basket was generous and the fresh whipped butter divine. Both steaks were cooked as ordered and the quality exceeded the pricepoint for our meals. For dessert, my nephew ordered ice cream and I opted for the affogato. Generous portions for both. Overall, this is a place to try either when looking for an evening out, a special occasion, or just because you feel like to enjoying the comfort of a New England Inn with the culinary options of city chef. Definitely recommend!

What a great place! My second time here, years after the first and finally finishing my review.read more

Before the menu change, I ordered a vegan tofu reuben with their delicious slaw, called a "Cosmos."…read more It was so good, I ordered it again, thinking it was impossible for them to get it right two times in a row. They did. So I came back a THIRD time and ordered it AGAIN, just to see if they can still keep their vegan cheese melted just right on top. It was incredible, AGAIN. Now that I've gotten this out of the way, ask where it is on their new menu as it is under revision--I don't like the tempeh version as much. Onto the rest of the atmosphere of Cushman. One of the most pleasant features of Cushman Market and Cafe is that it is nestled at an important corner in northeast Amherst. You need to travel further west to get to The Mill District and not much opens there early, and there's little else I can recall in the other cardinal directions. It's a pleasant trip, with plenty of parking in front, behind, and in a strip of side road across the street. I've never been in the market, so let me keep talking about the Cafe. The atmosphere of the Cafe is wonderful, with locals, safety officers, and regulars all visiting at each meal hour from breakfast to lunch. Nestled inside what looks like an old barn, complete with doors still hanging, Cushman has memorabilia from decades of music, sports, politics, and news frozen under acrylic, different for many of their tables. The café seems to have at most 20 chairs, and the staff behind the counter will deliver it to your table, call your name, or leave other orders by a stand near the back entrance. Cushman Cafe offers a variety of meals, alongside baked goods and freshly mixed café drinks. While I'm not a fan of the switcherels, I have enjoyed their dirty Chai lattes, iced teas, fresh coffees, and free water if I recall in a pinch. They have gender neutral bathrooms--which is great if you're tired of waiting in line for one of two as they are large but single occupancy. They offer cold panini sandwiches, hot panini, all sorts of eggs, egg sandwiches, and egg breakfasts, vegan and vegetarian options, alongside a seemingly visible carnivorous focus for their new menu's default. If you had a chance to hop on a bus and travel around Amherst, or you were passing through to the highways, Cushman Cafe is worth a quick stop. I've rarely had to wait long for my meals even in busy hours, and this is because of the large and competent kitchen, who--if you'll remember--can get a delicious sandwich right any day of the week. I hope cell service returns there!

This time we ordered a Large Blanco pizza which was great because there was plenty to take home for lunches throughout the week. I had the Tex-Mex burger for the first time. It came with a choice of house-made black bean burger, Impossible patty or Beyond patty. I chose the Beyond and I'm really happy I did because it was so good. Normally I would suggest a Cubano sandwich but they were out chick'n and waffles is great too. But today the burger really hit the spot. I had my choice of fresh greens or roasted potatoes which was a no-brainer. These potatoes are the best. I ordered a second order for my Mom to take home. She loves them. Imagine biting into a firm roasted potato skin with a velvety buttery mashed potato inside. Yeah, it's that kind of good! Today was a bonus, I accumulated enough points for a free small pizza of my choice! Heck yeah, that heats up nicely back home for lunches at work during the week. We might have loaded up on desserts... cookies, chocolate mousse, cupcakes, rice pudding, pastries. Oh yes, it's dangerous! There is seating inside and outside in nicer weather.
