When I called to schedule an appointment for my sick dog they told me they had no appointments that week but if I needed to be seen sooner I could pay to be on a priority list, which I had to do. When the vet examined my dog she said she would need to run a few tests. They decided to do a senior profile test on her and when I got my bill I was shocked that the senior test cost $366.58! I never asked for it, I was never told the cost and after a quick appointment my bill was $700.71 The staff was friendly and professional but there was nothing they could do at this point. This weekend I had another urgent matter with my dog and forgetting her meds while leaving town. The experience I had with the girls on the phone was night and day to prior experiences last year. Although they couldn't solve my situation, they bent over backwards to calm me down and offer alternative solutions. This is all I was looking for in the past. Who knows, maybe the staff member I was working with last year was having a bad day/month and I took it personally. Regardless, Dr. Tim Is kind and does put the animals first and very much cares about their outcome. And the front desk the ladies were nothing but sweet. I am so disgusted by the blatant money grabbing and unacceptably rude behavior of Dr. Tim that I've decided to write this review. Dr. Tim insisted on an unnecessary visit and an unnecessary test for heartworm (despite my dog being continually on heartworm meds for the last six years, never missing a dose, he wanted to do a test - which came back clear in 15 minutes - of course it did). His defense of the unnecessary visit and test was that he didn't want to get sued. I told him that I wasn't happy that he was racking up bills unnecessarily, and he said, "I don't care if you are happy, that is not my concern." Verbatim quote. $439 vet bill and an invitation to come back for a root canal and removal of a chipped tooth - with the lost trust, I am now questioning it that is even necessary. He is so transparently padding his wallet, rude to his patients and concerned only about himself. He is greedy and arrogant and not someone I want to do business with. read more

I LOVE Theater View Vet clinic! I moved all of my pet care to Theater View in 2022 following the abrupt closure of Montclair Vet in Oakland, and I couldn't be more happy with the care and attention I've received since. The front desk staff are some of the kindest, most responsive, and caring front desk staff I have ever interacted with at a vet's office. They are always polite and helpful -- I have never once felt I was being rushed or hurried, nor have I been spoken to rudely. I never have trouble getting prescriptions filled for medications or food, and the staff are always helpful when I want to order or refill through Chewy instead of directly at the practice. I've even needed a prescription refilled a few days before the annual visit that was needed to continue prescribing it, though it was a bit out of policy the team was able to get me enough medication to make it to the visit. My 6yo dog is healthy and has not required much care beyond his annual visit, but since we moved to Theater View he has needed two dental cleanings due to cracked teeth, one of which led to a complex extraction. Both of these procedures went smoothly, and I felt well-informed by Dr. Tim of what how he was doing during and after the procedure. Dental cleanings for dogs are not cheap, but I did not feel the costs were out of line with costs I had previously incurred for similar procedures that require anesthesia (e.g., foxtail searches) at other vets in the area. My two 17yo cats have required much more care since we moved to Theater View. Both have some sort of chronic intestinal disease, and while Dr. Tim and Dr. Amelia both independently offered to do biopsies and testing to determine a specific treatment plan for inflammatory bowel vs cancer, when I explained my bias against chemo for cats of this age, I did not feel at all pressured to do more testing or treatment than I was comfortable with. When one of these cats began showing symptoms I felt were impairing her quality of life, I was prepared for compassionate euthanasia -- Dr. Tim calmly walked me through alternative treatment options that were affordable and manageable, explained why he thought her quality of life was OK. So I gave his plan a month, and that month has so far turned into seven months of life I did not think she would have, with relatively little additional treatment. Both cats are doing great, despite advanced age and symptomatic intestinal disease. During 2020 and 2021, I didn't have a primary vet and because of COVID was unable to be seen except by emergency clinics -- during that time I had experience trying to get one of the pets seen at nearly every major clinic or vet in the Oakland/Berkeley area. I never experienced the kindness, compassion and care that I've received at Theater View. At other clinics asking for day-of or week-of appointments for a sick animal seemed to be a massive burden for the staff, the request would be met with rudeness and condescending explanations of how busy the vets are -- at Theater View, the staff kindly explain their process and what options are available. Really you could not ask for a better vet clinic. If you treat the staff with respect, they will return that in-kind. The doctors are top-notch. You will not find better treatment in the area, I'm sure! read more

We took our dog here for a concerning growth after becoming disillusioned with our prior vet in Oakland. Apparently many vet practices in the area have been taken over by VCA. Once that happens, the prices go up and the service declines. Unlike our prior vet clinic, Theater View offers highly personalized and caring service. They are super/ responsive to our questions and concerns. Dr Langford took excellent care of our dog, communicated with us along the way, and involved us appropriately in decision-making. I'm with Community Concern for Cats and we have been their client for years. I always recommend them as they are wonderful! I can't believe all the "bad" reviews that mostly seem like nonsense to me. Everything is great about them, including their prices. Since Covid happened, vet hospitals have been overwhelmed with probably hundreds of new pets that were acquired during Covid. Most vets reserve two spots for same day appointments. Right, it didn't used to be that way all the time but it is now because of the higher need. And many vets won't accept new patients because of the increased need. So IF you are already a client and call at 8:00 a.m. with a need for a sick animal, you will likely get one of those appointments. Or, if there happens to be a cancellation, you may score and get one those appointments. Be a good patient, appreciative, and vets will work hard to help you. But they can only do so much. read more

However, I did call Theater View when I was in a bind getting prescription dog food for our puppy with food allergies because my own vet, as well as all the typical online dog food carriers, were out of said food. I called Theater View to see if they had any in stock and they did. However, when I explained my situation and that I was not a patient but I could get a prescription from our vet to show the need for the dog food, they declined to sell it to me. The staff acknowledged and recognized the shortage and told me to that they wouldn't sell it to me even though they had it in stock. I obviously called them because I was in a bind and I think it was poor form that they wouldn't sell me the food. Obviously, my pet needs it and it would just be a nice gesture to sell it to help the animal. Even with me offering to have them talk to my vet and get a prescription, they weren't willing to help out. I mean they were still going to sell a bag of food and make money off of it? We have been taking our dogs here for several years and have been so happy. The staff is very kind and accommodating to our dog that is afraid of going to the vet. Our dogs have received excellent care. The vets are always willing to take plenty of time to explain the dogs' issues and all of their options. They are busy and routine visits need to be scheduled quite a bit in advance but they always make time when an urgent issue arises. We feel lucky to have our dogs in their care. It pains me to write this review.... We have been a long time client of Theater view vet clinic for both my dogs and a cat seeing Dr Laurie mainly. Came in on a Wednesday with my 11 year old dog who vomited the day before and had diarrhea that morning. He was in good health and spirits and did not have any prior issues. The tech took him in while I sat in the car. Dr Laurie ran a full blood panel, stool sample and did an X-ray and everything came back normal except the stool showed some coccidia which she said was not a big deal in adult dogs and was not sure if that was the cause of his stomach upset. $900 later she sent us home with two meds Flagyl and Ponazuril. I asked if they were safe to give together and she assured me they were totally safe. On Friday afternoon my dog had a massive grand mall seizure for the first time and it was so scary. I called Dr Laurie immediately, but they were closing so she told me to stop the meds and go to the emergency vet if he had anymore seizures. Well he had another massive one Saturday afternoon and we raced him to Pacific Vet Hospital in Lafayette. They told us the wait was 5+ hours and we had to wait in the car, but to come knock on the door if he had any more seizure. 4 hours later he did have another massive seizure and they picked him up while seizing and ran him inside. He had many more seizure while there over the next 3 days and they ran blood work and his liver count was now way off. They told us that he NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRESCRIBED BOTH OF THOSE MEDS TO BE TAKEN TOGETHER! Taking those meds together damaged his liver and his liver counts were completely fine on weds when theater view ran the blood work before the meds were given. His seizures never stopped with the anti seizure meds they gave him and all the seizures completely fried his brain causing brain damage. It's was SO awful to watch him suffer and we had to make the painful decision to put him to sleep. And spent another $3,000 trying to make him better. I called Dr Laurie on Monday morning and asked to talk with her ASAP and that our dog was at the emergency vet all weekend. She finally called me back Monday afternoon, just after we put our dog to sleep. I told her what the emergency vet had said about the two meds causing the liver damage and seizures and all she said was that she was so sorry. PLEASE learn from our horrible story and ALWAYS question any medications a vet (or doctor) prescribes and how those meds are processed in the body. Do your own research rather than putting all your trust in what we thought was the expert. I feel so awful that I naively trusted Dr Laurie and my dog suffered unnecessarily because of it. My family is truly heartbroken and traumatized from our experience. read more

We have been faithful patients of Dr Laurie BEFORE she founded Theater View Vet - back when she was with Dr Gerry. When I called last week at 8:30 am about my mature cat who COULD NOT WALK I was told by the receptionist that there were no available same day appointments, and I was appalled. I asked her to talk to Dr Laurie given 11 year history... and never heard back. In the intervening time, I contacted another well-established vet in the area who had NEVER seen any of my 3 cats but who was willing to see my 11 year old cat who suddenly could not walk. It seems my kitty had been attacked by a raccoon or other animal and had a raging MRSA/Cellulitus infection that could have easily killed her. Thank goodness ALAMO ANIMAL HOSPITAL was able to see Cinnamon, expertly diagnose her and save her life. After this experience, I have asked that all 3 of my cat's records be transferred to Alamo Animal Hospital. This is the second or third time that Dr Laurie's office could not schedule a same day appointment. Time to get back to basics!!! They wasted no time providing our information to Contra Costa County Animal Service department so that they could send us a bill to license our dog. In fact, we got the bill from animal services before we had our two phone calls returned from the vet with lab results. I think we spent about $700 on various labs etc, only to find out the issues they suspected, weren't issues at all. So, if you want your personal information shared by them and you have a bunch of extra $ to test theories, then you found your vet. And yes, licensing your pet is required and the OWNERS responsibility to do when they move, which we did, even without the helicopter vet! read more

Theater View has taken care of my dogs for many years. They have always taken great care of them. One of my dogs had a very itchy ear. She scratched it like crazy. She even rubbed it on the carpet. I was very concerned that a fox tail had worked its way into the canal. I immediately called Theater View to schedule an appointment. They actually fit me in that morning! I can't tell you how happy I was to get her looked at. As it turned out she was suffering from an ear infection. The vet applied a medication into the ear. Within 1/2 hour my dog was no longer scratching. What a relief for her and for me! I am so thankful that Theater View could fit her in. They quickly assessed the problem and promptly treated it. I'll admit, I fall pretty hard really fast for Veternarians. I think it's because I haven't had to take my kitty in to very many of them so, when I find a new one who is on point, I instantly fall for them and feel like "this is it..no other Vet shall ever touch my cat again". Like that last place I used to go in Alameda, fell hard and the vet I fell for ended up leavin..now that place is dead to me. By way of a recommendation by a pal, enter Dr. Laurie. Her place is tucked away in Orinda off the freeway, in a secret lil cave off the side. It's a trippy location but, it's the perfect setting. Here's something that didn't happen at the last Vet office.. The receptionist chick.. was NICE. Yea.. crazy huh? You'd think more places would opt for a friendly front office person huh? No, not always. But, here.. she was cool and what a fuckin relief! No more evil front desk chick.. ahh such a relief. By the time it was Beetle's turn to go in for her exam, she had peed her crate in fear. Ugh..gross. Dr. Laurie was great with her..she made my kitty feel comfy and did a thorough exam of her fluffy lil bod. Then she took her in the back and I heard OWWW..as she withdrew blood from my cat's body. I was in the lobby about to cry on my boyfriend's shoulder at this point. I don't know how moms of little humans can go thru this shit, because let me assure you, I was a ball of anxiety and worry. Only issue I had, and it's really not a huge one but, it was an issue.. when the vet tech came out with my kitty, I realized in the car that she had not taken the time to clean out my cat's pee pee crate. Totally gross...and that's the first time that's ever happened, as most techs just clean that shit up. 5 stars for Dr. Laurie's awesomeness and 3 for the lazy tech. Also, her prices are super reasonable, that I really do feel I have found the best Vet for Beetle for the rest of her natural born kitty life. My cat suffers from acne and anxiety.. she licks her butt too much and she just might have irritable bowel syndrome. She ain't perfect by any means but, I love her and hope she lives to see at least 20 years on this earth. read more

We were referred to this practice by Community Concern For Cats (Walnut Creek) where we adopted our two kittens, Fred and George. Both boys had their snip-snip procedure at Theater View and my fiancé and I were at complete ease knowing that our babies were being taken care of. We've since then needed to bring one of the boys in for a bout with conjunctivitis - I brought both kittens in for good measure and they only charged me for the one, which I thought was very generous! The staff is warm and friendly and Vet Laurie is completely professional and always in a good mood. The location in Orinda is beautiful, easy to get to, and has plenty of parking. The office is clean and a welcoming environment for pets and their owners.They send out a newsletter with great information and updates. We love Dr. Laurie and the whole staff! As a first time "dog parent", I am still learning the ropes of normal/not normal dog health. So I am consistently emailing her questions about everything from cracked paws to flea medicine brands. She is so helpful answering my questions. Before I had my dogs, I briefly was caring for my parents/family's cat. Who turned out to be diabetic! Dr. Laurie diagnosed him, showed me how to give his insulin, helped me learn to use a glucomonitor. And answered all my questions. On top of their wonderful care, and really nice office environment, they are much less expensive than other vets! They really cut out a lot of the unnecessary costs. They give you the rx/medicine at cost. So they aren't marking anything up. And they call around to find you the least expensive alternatives to prices! Without a doubt, 5 + stars! We have known "Auntie Laurie" for 11 years. Before she opened this practice, our beloved Bear would only want her, at the office she formerly practiced in (unfortunate experience with the other doctor in that clinic). We were so happy to locate Dr Laurie's new clinic. Bear was happy to see her once again, after a year. Auntie Laurie loved Bear (as did her amazing staff). She continued to treat Bear through an unfortunate disease, Vistibular. Bear declined rapidly and was suffering. Laurie helped him through to his next life, last year and made the experience as humane, loving and kind as possible. We can never forget her warmth, compassion and medical expertise. We have a new pack member now, Elton. He's a Norfolk Terrier. After flying back East to bring him home to Orinda, Auntie Laurie was his first contact. We've had him over 3 months now and he's been to Theater View twice. It goes without saying, he loves her and her staff! We will never go anywhere else for our furry family members. We have been seeing Dr. Laurie for almost 10 years. She has such an easy way with our pets and an amazing skill level. Where other vets would cast aside a pet she was able to find ways to ease suffering and increase well being. She even came to our home when our cat was suffering and needed to be put to sleep. I have been utilizing the services of a veterinarian for many years. Both large and small animal. It has been "hit & miss" when it come to a Vet - typically most of us are seeing a vet due to a pet becoming acutely ill and in the need of immediate veterinary care. Recently our kitten became very sick. I had previously used a Vet in WC, but I was not happy with the care and unnecessary test etc. we were referred to Dr. Laura so we took our sick kitten, who had 105 temp and was not doing good. The kitten illness was sudden and Dr. Laura and her staff were able to schedule an appointment quickly. After a few test and an antibiotic regiment our kitten recovered and is back to her normal self. I know people say Dr's are supposed make their patients get well. It wasn't her ability to Diagnose and treat- it was her genuine caring and kindness. The following day, a Saturday, Dr. Laura was able to see and treat our dogs with non life threatening problems as she followed up with our kittens progress. I could go on and on, but I won't. I had the misfortune of observing her lack of ethics, compassion and morality as a fellow student at The School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. Her lack of respect for any common sense left me with a permanent, disabling back injury. She showed no concern. Our visits with her attending to the dogs are thorough and prices are very reasonable; it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg when we take in our female chihuahua and her four pups. And every Thursday evening, Dr Laurie offers a puppy socialization session so that her clients can bring in their puppies (those which have had their first booster shot and before the age of 16-1/2 weeks) so the puppies can romp around together and the clients can ask questions, get tips from Dr Laurie and Annette (one of her staff members), and learn from each other. And it's free! (There's plenty of free parking and her office is easily accessible from BART should you rely on public transportation.) read more

I've been taking my puppy to this vet since Oct 2018. The doctors are good but I think they're too quick to prescribe pills and RX dog food. Not all pills work for all dogs and unfortunately my puppy got really sick after taking prescribed medications. Dr. Laurie examined my seven-year-old cat and gave me estimates and recommendations of what I should do about her dental needs (she needed to have several teeth removed). They gave me a high/low estimate, which I had no idea if that was reasonable or not, so I called another veterinary clinic listed on Yelp with high reviews. They actually quoted me almost twice the price! Dr. Amelia performed her surgery. She was super friendly and told me that after performing my cat's surgery, they actually ended up charging me $200 less than their low estimate because it was not as extensive as they thought it would be once my cat was under. That was such a nice surprise! It's now been about a month and her coat is thick, full and shiny! She's gained weight and is looking so healthy. My dogs are very comfortable going there and never seem nervous. Having worked in a veterinary hospital for over 10 years, I have an idea of how things should work and what to expect. Both vets are knowledgeable and professional, and put you at ease. My dogs are very comfortable with both. This clinic takes care of what needs to be taken care of, and doesn't overcharge for services or add on services not needed.
