Friendly staff, free wi-fi, outdoor seating, good pastries and interesting food options make this one of my favorite coffee shops in Raleigh. They don't have dedicated parking, but I've rarely had trouble finding a spot along one of the streets that connect to make Five Points. I make a pretty decent latte every morning at the office, but I still love coming here over the weekend to have one of theirs. The pastries and menu items have all been better than your average coffee shop, and I'd especially recommend the cinnamon rolls. The barista offered to heat the roll in their oven and it came out fluffy and delicious, a perfect Sunday snack to match one of their coffee drinks. Their breakfast items looked pretty interesting as well, so I'm hoping to sneak by one morning that I actually wake up in time over the weekend. My favorite reason to go to a coffee shop is to enjoy beautiful weather, so their shaded outdoor seating is perfect for me. I'm already looking forward to coming here regularly during the spring. I only wish they were open longer hours so I could drop by after work during the week. The location may be a little bit out of the way for most people, but I would recommend giving Third Place a shot if you're not looking for a chain. The crowd is different and there are a few other shops worth checking out nearby if you haven't spent much time in Five Points. read more

When I first reviewed in 2006, Third Place was a long-standing business and I a long-standing patron of said business. I'm not sure what's going on lately with the old Third Place; there are reduced hours, which is understandable in this economy. Third Place is the neighborhood coffee shop in Five Points. No matter when I stop by or drive by it always has a steady flow of traffic. Having lived near Five Points, I'm a big fan of the area. My barber, tailor, and my favorite movie theater (Rialto) are all there in addition to one of my favorite restaurants - Hayes Barton Cafe. If I need a little caffeine boost, it always makes sense to make a quick stop by Third Place for a cortado. I'm a fan of their granola and yogurt. But they also have an assortment of pastries and sandwiches at breakfast and lunch. Since they have free wifi, you can totally camp out here and get some work done. If it's a nice, you could even grab a seat outside. It's a little on the smaller side, so I wouldn't recommend it as a meeting spot for a large group. It also could be challenging for a quick coffee run because of the lack of dedicated parking. But, if you live near Five Points, you should totally be frequenting Third Place. read more

Diego got a small coffee (coffee beans are 100% fair trade, organic, and slow roasted) and a bran muffin (figures). I got a small iced vanilla soy latte and a bagel with egg, cheese and bacon (figures). I tasted his bran muffin...not for me and Diego thought it was dry but good. I read the other reviews and was a little skeptical about going here but i'm so glad that I did! The girl that took our order was great about helping us maneuver through the alternate vegan options for breakfast. The vegan latte was probably the best latte i've had in a long time. The vegan blueberry lemon muffin was kind of bland tasting but nice and moist. We ordered the breakfast burrito without egg and cheese and added avocado and it was great. They, unfortunately, only carry real butter as a butter option for the bagels so if you are vegan and looking for a toasted bagel with butter bring your own. Hopefully they will start keeping some margarine on hand in the future. read more

When I was in high school (10+ years ago) we used to always go to Third Place to hang out on weekend nights, seeing as we were all too young for the bar scene. Now, I tend to tote my laptop down to Third Place once a week or so and work. The shop is relatively the same as it was back then though. Comfy chairs, cool decor, and some pretty great coffee. One advantage Third Place has over other coffee shops in the area I my opinion is they have a pretty decent sandwich/food selection so you could get lunch and some coffee while you're hanging out rather than just the typically bagel/Danish fare at other coffee shops. read more

This is definitely a neighborhood gem for those in Five Points who want a local java joint. Bf and I love to walk here from his house to get either iced or hot soy lattes. Hazelnut is my favorite syrup, and his is vanilla. We had lunch here once, too, because we had a Groupon. The hummus sandwich with sprouts was super good. I felt so healthy eating it, too. Their side is tortilla chips and salsa, which is fresh and light. Banana bread was also a winner for us on another occasion. However, a bran muffin once was so dry, bf didn't want it. I am hard to let things to go waste, so I took it home and broke it up into some yogurt, but I won't buy another muffin here. Downside: The baristas are so laid back, they can be a teeny bit slow. Normally, that is totally cool with me, but if you are in a rush and just want to pop in to grab some joe and go, I'd skip it unless there is no one else in line. Third Place is pretty close to my office, so you'd think I'd stop there more often, but I don't. The coffee is really great and they are friendly, but they are usually under-staffed, so if you want anything other than a simple cup of coffee, you are going to wait. If i am not in a rush, this place is great. They have a relaxed, quiet atmosphere with comfortable seating. As some other Yelpers mentioned, parking can be difficult. I usually have good luck parking on Fairview and then walking, rather than waste time trying to find a spot closer. read more

Outstanding coffee shop. Just crushed a breakfast burrito that may be the only thing I eat until Monday (currently Saturday). I'm pairing it with a smooth dark roast which combined with the gym in a couple hours may be a bad combo but needless to say, this place has all the morning feels. The muffins and BLTCH make great snacks. It's a super relaxing place to get away from the office and a good place to get a little online work done. The parking can be a little tricky (that's five points for you), but it's definitely my favorite coffee spot in Raleigh and certainly deserves a visit if you've never been. read more

We've moved away from Raleigh, but this was our place when we there. I went at least once a week for the two years we were in Five Points. Coffee drinks were always great, with new specials popping up frequently. This is the kind of place where they'll make you what you want and not make a stink about it. They're just cool like that. The food was equally good. The Bean Burger was my favorite and I was kind of devastated to see it go away. The BLTCA was a close second for me so I had a delish replacement. My favorite part about Third Place was the service. It's just damn good service. They make you feel at home every time. I loved knowing that I could go in with my son and it would be cool every time. The lending library was a huge help in keeping my little one occupied while I enjoyed a latte. (Speaking of that, I think we owe you a book Third Place! I went there on a Sunday morning and there was no crowd. The hazelnut latte was really good, I haven't tasted coffee like that before. If you go here, definitely get the homemade granola. I got a parfait and the granola really made it. Great nutty flavor. I will return because I have a groupon, but parking sucks around there so because of that, it may not be a place I frequent. Stopped by here during a vacation in order to see Keith Knight's artwork, which was great, but loved the overall ambiance - and smell! - of the place as soon as we walked in. Very welcoming vibe. Third Place is a popular coffee house in downtown Raleigh, frequented by many college students, even though it is a bit of a trip from campus. But once you've tried their coffee and food, you can tell why. They are consistently well-made and very delicious. The only thing I don't like is - their cookies are not so much with the softness. I like my cookies to be fairly chewy and soft and these have a bit of a crisp to them. That is personal preference, though. Also, at closing time, in an effort to clear out the pastries, they're all just $1. The atmosphere is great, and it's a very welcoming environment. It's also right next to Lilly's so if you're hungry and need some more nourishment, you can just run right over and get a slice of pizza. read more

I remember a time when I used to come to Third Place every other day, when it was the best place to hang out, when I could walk in and know at least two other people inside. Those days seem to have left, perhaps partly to the new atmosphere brought by the new owners and partly by the way trends come and go. Two years ago, Third Place changed hands, and they seem to be making more of an effort to cater to the yuppies filling the Five Points area - a "kid" area, more couch areas and less welcoming to the partiers that come for their caffeination before heading out. For these reasons, Third Place drops to a four star instead of a five star. However: Many things about Third Place are still awesome. I appreciate that it hasn't caved (as of the last time I went there) to the wifi craze, and promotes a coffee house atmosphere. You'll still see many students studying there on weekday nights, avoiding the pressures of the internet. The walls are covered with works by cool artists and change about once a month - like what you see? Got the cash? It's yours! The coffee at Third Place is quite tasty and the tea is also delicious - the chai is a little weak, though. From the pastry case? The cakes are awesome, and I can't remember where they get them from, but you should get the Chocolate Mousse Cake rightnow. The non-cake pastries can be delicious or disappointing - watch that you don't get something stale. As for the vegetarian sandwiches - try the daily special or go for the old standby - the Plethora. Hummus, sprouts, sunflower seeds and all kinds of yumminess, it'll make you wish your stomach could hold more. The best time to come here is a weekday night in the summer - sit outside with your sandwich and double soy whathaveyou and watch the people walk and drive by on Glenwood. Bathroom: 4 stars. If you're confused at the bathroom markings, check out the bottom of the door. Well-stocked, clean and usually have some artwork. Watch out though - the hot water gets really hot! read more

So my love muffin and I are always looking for a new coffeehouse to try. I found this one on yelp and thought we give it a try it had great reviews... So we walk in and it's eclectic looking.... The atmosphere was nice and laid back. Great variety of drinks and pastries which I must say the chocolate chip cookies are homemade good along with the chocolate chip oatmeal. For our drinks: PB & Banana Smoothie: very liquidity, but nice flavor...... I wouldn't get it again though I didn't like the consistency. My husband got the iced Americano which he enjoyed. Prices are average coffee house prices. I would return if I'm in the area. Oh, the seating is cool but if any establishment is going to have cloth sofas in a dining area, you have to clean them the sofa was filthy... yuck. Worst. Service. Ever. A regular customer cut me in line- I don't care if you are a regular, wait your damn turn. I ordered a hummus plate- how long does it take to slap some hummus on a plate. Apparently 10+ minutes even though I was the only customer. I ordered bottled water.. No water.. The excuse "I haven't been here all week". I don't care where you've been all week. Yes! Another coffee shop that offers vegan options and has oat milk! Big win in my book. Another win, though they don't normally offer tea lattes, that didn't stop them from fulfilling my wants and made it anyway! Even better, hey didn't question me and call it a London Fog. Honestly people, if I wanted vanilla in it that's what I would order! Sorry, some coffee baristas think they know better. But the staff was super nice and accommodating. The scene is laid back with many tables and comfy couches. You could go there and study, plan a trip on your computer or read a book. Third Place is a great change of pace from the Starbucks Coffee scene. I much prefer Third Place in the spring and fall evenings when it's cool and breezy and you can sit outside and enjoy the weather and minimal traffic going down Glenwood late in the evening. Wife and I decided to try this place out today. We were greeted when we arrived and it was cordial. The drip coffee was excellent. The customer service was really the star, however, and that's what bumped my review to a five. The two guys behind the counter could not be more friendly. Even though they forgot our nachos in the oven and subsequently burned them to a charred crisp they apologized, made us new nachos and even gave me a free refill on my coffee. The coffee is delicious but the staff is a bit rude. Comfortable environment but not enough space. Has interesting decor, and the lighting is cozy. It's not a place where you can read or do work because it's loud. I don't think it's a place I would revisit. My sister cannot drink caffeine because it makes her really ill. She requested decaf but he still made it with some caffeine because she became dizzy and ill from it. I visit a new coffee shop every week and this hasn't happened before. read more

I go to Third Place to meet a friend who's a regular there. At first blush it may seem like a pretentious hipster spot, but it's really not, it's a true neighborhood coffee shop. The coffee is fantastic. It is a great place to catch up with friends. There's ample outdoor seating and the staff is friendly. Only issues, parking and the fact that it needs a really good cleaning. We're post-parishioner, post-citizen, and post-publican. The steeple, the town hall, and the public house are no longer the rallying points for the thick, inescapable community of our given village. We chafe at rules and obligations and high-calorie drinks. These institutions leave holes, and the coffee house aspires to fill them. It trades the fixed community of a particular place for whatever chance assortment of individuals may happen down the road. It replaces ale and its sedative effects with performance-enhancing coffee. Matters of public interest are traded for hobbies of private interest. Ubiquitous free WiFi threatens to keep patrons elsewhere and productive. We find some comfort here, but we still leave empty. Third Place reminds us of our need for real, thick associations apart from our work and home and for intermediary institutions between ourselves and the faraway state. It cannot be faulted for making a concerted and explicit attempt to fill a void in our modern life. Third Place has a close, slightly bohemian feel that may be a catalyst for community. There is WiFi, but there's plenty of seating for friends to gather. There's even some outdoor seating. The parking is limited. The coffee is freshly roasted, and they have a better than average assortment of items to satisfy your appetite. read more

My friend and I used this as our weekend study spot. And, somehow I managed to get work done here, which I find hard to do in public places. But, it must have been for the good coffee. I appreciate the friendly faces and people who work there as well. Not too keen on the prices of food though, but its understandable b/c of the small business nature. I love the atmosphere of Third Place. It's a wonderful place to meet and catch up with friends. Minus one star for poor separation of smoking and nonsmoking areas. It's tempting to sit by the lovely plate-glass window, but the window is not well insulated and smoking is allowed just on the other side. I left with my hair and clothes smelling like cigarettes -- yuck. Asking smokers not to sit RIGHT next to the window while smoking would fix this, there are other tables outside where ventilation is better. In the meantime, I recommend enjoying your coffee away from the tables at the window! read more

This place was good. Drinks were good. I did like how they let you have a mug instead of a paper cup or plastic. The atmosphere is cute and comfy. It is a little too lousy at times to focus and do homework. Overall I would have given a better score but the only food options they offer are muffins. This always has been and always will be my favorite coffeehouse in Raleigh. It's the only one that has always had that eclectic, independent feel that I like coffeehouses to have. This place has had its ups and downs with staff and quality over the years, but from 2015 and beyond, it's as good as it's ever been. And the coffee is always fantastic, the staff is hippy-hipster-ish but also friendly, which at some places are mutually exclusive adjectives.
