Next stop, Thirsty's...they must have rebranded because in Yelp they are listed as Thirsty Nickel. This club gets a A+ for marketing...they had a handsome young man outside harking free drinks. He was super personable and even made suggestions of low cost food options on 6th street. Thirsty's chose the drink they gave you...tasted like drink mix (no alcohol). We only had a sip and were off to our next adventure. The bartender was super friendly and nice. All the staff was super friendly, which was pleasant. Thirsty's is a large club with basketball machines in the back. The bar is quite long bar with a large space for dancing. The music was popping, so we can see how it can be an attractive club later in the evening when the party folks come out. read more

False advertising and shady behavior. There was a girl outside promoting $2 shots, so we decided to go in. We ordered 6 lemon drop shots and got charged almost $100 for drinks that tasted like juice. We still tipped 20% because we try to be respectful. When we confronted the staff, the same girl who advertised the $2 shots suddenly claimed she never said that and then kept hiding to avoid the situation. Management looked surprised at the price but just shrugged and offered no solution. Don't come here. This place practices sneaky, misleading tactics and clearly doesn't value customers. If you're looking for an ice-cold beer and great conversation, I highly recommend stopping by. We ordered 2 crown and cokes last night (10/3 or 10/4 after midnight) there was like no crown in either of them and we were charged $36.85 plus he already put a $5 tip on there with our our consent. Making the total for two weak drinks, $41.85?! The math isn't mathing! The place is crawling with young people who could afford these prices?! I suspect we were fraudulently charged and we won't be back. We were there a few weeks ago and this was not our experience. Massive brawl broke out and if my friend (who saw it coming up behind me) had not grabbed and pushed me away , I'd be pinned under 5 violent guys, 3 tables, 4 cops like another poor woman was. In the current climate we live in, I was so scared someone would pull out a gun (many people, including my friend, have license to carry in this state and do) lasted almost 3 minutes and we were cowering in thr corner dodging flying wood chairs. 5 stars for quick response of cops who had been patrolling streets outside. The Thirsty Nickel is a solid 3.5 stars in my book & this is only because I have not yet experienced the drinks here yet...the past few times we have made it to the The Thirsty Nickel, while enjoying 6th street I have already reached my 3-4 drink limit for the night (at 37 years fabulous I've mastered my drink limit & besides I'm to damn old to be getting shitfaced drunk) ;). BUT I can say we always enjoy shaking our asses at The Thirsty Nickel & watching whatever fight is showing on the big screen tvs..last night we saw Manny Pacquiao get beat by Jeff Horn..I was so rooting for Manny!!! The crowd at The Thirsty Nickel always seems to be mixed, which is a plus in my book & means we're not surrounded by "just barely legal babies". LOVEEEE this place! Extremely quick service and our bartender was really nice! We went to go play some games and the bartender gave us some free plays! Security/bouncers were really nice and friendly too, I have no complaints. 3 shots of Don Julio Blanco for $25 before tip, AMAZING! Cheaper than all the bars we went to that night with phenomenal service. Lots of diversity in this bar too which was refreshing to see since I'm not from Austin. We stopped in for a while during our 6th street romp through Austin. It was still early and the place was not too crowded. Bar service was pretty easy to get since we were only one of two groups in the place. Drinks were pretty cheap actually...there were ample TV's to check out the games going on and plenty of room to stretch out. We played a few games too since we were killing time. No complaints...not sue how well they do when it's packed and crazy, but everything rolled smoothly while we were there. read more

When my friend and I hit up 6th St when we were visiting Austin, we really enjoyed our time at Thirsty Nickel. Unfortunately there wasn't a huge crowd, but we loved the top 40s tunes spun by the DJ and had a blast taking pictures with the Welcome to Austin mural inside the pub. Drinks were delicious and cheap...I remember a rum and coke was only $5 and a Malibu and orange juice was only $6.50. As someone used to $15 drinks in SF, this was a very welcome relief. My friend and I spent a good 40 minutes or so here between all the dancing and pictures, probably the longest we spent at any spot that night. I was walking by when I saw a crowd outside of The Thirsty Nickel. Inside was a band rocking out to some of my favorite songs I grew up with. We sat at the bar, while trying not to sing a long to every song. The Band was really good and nailed each cover song. The set list was made up of the best of 90's rock. It was a really fun night so far and I really wanted more of the live music in Austin. As it's getting later in the night, I order vodka with blueberry red bull. The new line of red bull was the whole excuse to order it. A bit sweet, but easy to drink. We left after a couple drinks even though the band was still killing it. The night was nearly winding down and we wanted to sneak in one more spot. read more

First bar we visited on Sixth Street we ducked because we heard live music. It was a solo act and he was pretty darn good. However as pretty as they were they had barely anyone there so we were wtf but figured it out that they're liquor options are very limited. So we are one of the few here with shiny and new bit not making us think oh yeah this place rocks. It didn't so we moved after one drink. They played mainly hip-hop/R&B, focusing more on the 2000s which I thoroughly enjoyed. There really is not a designated dance floor, so you are just dancing in whatever open space you can find. Drinks are pretty standard and bartenders are attentive. Not much seating area either. Overall I still enjoyed the short time spent here before bar hopping around other places. read more

I came here to watch the Bears (NFL) Monday Night football game. What a great/fun crowd. They do a lot to promote around the Bears games, including bringing in Lucky's Chicago Style Grill to prepare food, which was awesome. Try the dipped Italian Beef sandwiches, ummm good! This location is perfect for bar hopping or taking in a sporting event as they have several televisions. This bar is dead set in the middle of 6th St. This bar is very spacious, room for two bars on opposite sides of the room, beer pong table, adult size connect four game and sitting areas, and a stage for live bands. Came here a few Sunday nights ago and had a few drinks. The bartender was the oddest guy I've ever met at a bar. . I'm a customer and he just didnt seem to speak to me like one.. more like an enemy which I found odd bc he was so pleasant to everyone else. I asked if what the girl down the way was drinking a mimosa (and if not, I wanted to order whatever it was she was drinking) he yelled at me that I coudl have a mimosa if I wanted one. . um ok. .. still dotn know what the girl down the way was drinking. . and decided to let it go. next I decided since that drink had no taste of alcohol at all.. I'd order a screwdriver. he looked at me like he saw a ghost. He said, " you sure you dotn mean a mimosa?" I said yes I'm sure. He said if you order a mimosa it's free. I said why's that? (just curious here..) and I know there was not a tone in my voice ..I really was just genuinely curious. and he screamed at me. . well then you're gonna pay for it either way now! um ok. moving on. we finished our drinks and bounced. The Thirsty Nickel (formerly Uncle Flirty's) is a bar/night club located on the corner of Sixth and Trinity in the Sixth Street Entertainment District. We have two floors of bars, the lower floor open 7 days a week and the upstairs usually open for special events or private parties. There are five bars total and a ton of private space so we have all the room you need for a party of 5 to a party of 500. Open 7 days a week we have a varying format. Weekdays we usually have live music acts, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday we have a DJ from 11pm to Close. We have a number of HD Plasma TV's to watch the game on and a shiny new 108" HD screen to watch the game in all it's glory or to watch The Bachelor (Brad Womack "The Bachelor" is one of the owners of the bar). This is a great place to have a birthday party, bachelor or bachelorette party, or just hang out with your friends. Best bet is to check the bars MySpace page to see what is going on for the day you plan on going out. I am not going to say anything else. First impression was great, the bartender seemed nice and the drinks were good. HOWEVER, when it was time to close the tab they said my boyfriend's card was declining (..ok?) so they swiped mine which was "declining" as well, should've known then. The next morning we check our bank accounts and are OVERcharged (different amounts multiple times) from the bar as well as the photo booth, which was erroring "not accepting card at this time" somehow I still got charged $30?? ($10 for each swipe). After searching through the other reviews it seems like this is a repeat issue for this place. Scummy. read more

I was most definitely skeptical being such a Yelp addict when my friend, a UT grad, suggested this would be one of the spots we would hit up, I was... well, skeptical. After all, how was I to understand the awesomeness of this dive bar with live bands and great drink prices as well as delightful bartenders who are able to whip you up anything in a whim? The Thirsty Nickel is truly great, one of the prime examples of awesome bar hopping on 6th street. Live music, open floor, no fuss doorman and fast, strong drinks at dirt cheap prices. My partner and I were walking around on Saturday night and stopped across the street, looking around. The irresistible sounds of '80s tunes wafted our way. As we crossed the street and looked in the front window, we saw a rockin' blonde female drummer banging away. Throw in no cover and we were sold. Inside is a pretty spacious bar. Corner location so nice view of the street for prime people watching. There were also large screens, perfect for airing the NFL playoffs. There were 2 bars, but only one was in service. The other one had a beer pong game going in front of it. For us, the main draw was the band. We had a great time kicking off our night here with the Guilty Pleasures, an all-female cover group who performed mostly 1980s covers with a little Lady Gaga in the mix. The lead singer was tall, bold blonde with great stage presence and an amazing set of lungs. The petite bassist and guitarist were great, too. They really rocked out. However, this review is for the bar, not the band. Early in the night so not super crowded. The clientele was mixed with various douchey-looking guys, some not super-young ladies looking to reclaim their youth, and older people who looked like they wanted to get away from the kids for a night and let loose. I'm sure it's different on different nights, but we had a good time enjoying the live music. read more

The bouncers are racist. Or so my friends believe. There isn't any other explanation for the demeaning treatment I received on Friday night. I'm of Indian background and my husband is Caucasian. We went downtown together for our friend's 21st birthday and upon handing my ID to the bouncer on the way in, he stopped me and said I was lying about who I was. Everyone I was with laughed thinking it was a joke, but then the bouncer started telling me that I was too short and that I looked nothing like the picture on my ID. We told him it was my real ID and that he could run it, but he was like "It may be a real ID, but there's no way this is you." What could I say? The last name and address matched my husband's license, but he kept being a jerk about it and I was totally humiliated my his insulting behavior. The most absurd part? I wasn't even drinking that night. I will be turning 25 this year and people tell me I should take it as a compliment when I get carded, but this was ridiculous. Thirsty Nickel, please train your door people in a little thing called courtesy. Oh and maybe ask that they obtain something a bit higher than an elementary school diploma. You lost the business of a pretty big group of my friends on Friday night and your sales will surely feel a steady decline if you are unable to treat your patrons with some common decency and respect. read more

Okay... so maybe 90% of the bars on 6th St. have super jenga. But something about this place made it that much more awesome. It could be the fact that I was standing on a wobbly chair KICKING ASS! The people here were so concerned for my safety that I had a small crew waiting to catch me in case I fell. But the staff never once came by to scold me to come down (which I very much appreciate). They also have 2 pool tables in the back where my friends were able to keep a close eye on my drunken-balancing-on-wobbly-chair-jenga-skills. I believe the bartender gave me a free soda in hopes to sober me up and get off the rocking chair, thanks! On the Sunday night that I went, they had a live DJ mixing and they let us get up onto the stage to dance. Now if this were to be in LA or Vegas, you'd instantly get the boot.. but these people are so nice! I even asked the DJ what songs he was playing and he happily listed each song for me. read more

Worst experience I've ever had in my life. I am allergic to peppermint and had an extreme reaction where I immediately got sick after accidentally drinking a drink that contained peppermint. A worker in the bathroom pounded on the stall door, screaming at me that anyone throwing up is too drunk to be in the bar, though I was coherently repeating that I was having an allergic reaction and even showed her my epipen. She told me it wasn't possible to throw up from an allergic reaction, which is 100% false, and continued yelling at me. My pregnant friend was also with me and tried to speak with her to clear up the situation, but she was belligerently yelling at us to exit the bar. Obviously we did so, but the whole experience was the most unprofessional misuse of power in a bar, especially on 6th street and especially when I could have been seriously ill. read more

Now, we probably play 5% of our gigs here but I need to throw that out there. -Here is the thing EVERYONE needs to understand about bars in Austin: Sometime over the last 10-15 years Austin's 'downtown' divided itself into three VERY distinct zones: 6th Street - College kids, tourists, average age of about 23-34 Warehouse District - Young-ish professionals - Average age about 30 West 6th - Youngish professionals. Overall more laid back than warehouse. Average age - 28 Thirsty Nickel is on 6th Street and with that comes a certain clientele. People will be younger and drunker. There WILL be tourists. There WILL be bachelorette parties and girls WILL dance on the bar. So long as you are ok with that, you will LOVE the Thirsty Nickel. The DJs play good music, other than my band, which sucks, the bands play fairly good music, and the bartenders are always doing their best to provide alcohol to their patrons. If you want a place to discuss existentialism whilst sipping a fine port, this isn't your spot. If you are looking for a place where a bartender doesn't hesitate when you say "4 shots of anything" while holding up 3 fingers and saying back and forth, you'll have a great time. read more

This was the first bar on 6th street I ever went to and heard live music at (via the all girl rock cover band Guilty Pleasures who are awesome) upon visiting Austin for the first time. 6th street can have more of a drunk college frat house filled with bros vibe, so nowadays when we go it's normally to entertain out of town guests who want to do the touristy pub crawl. That being said there are gems to be found on 6th occasionally. It's all about which bands you happen to catch playing and what bar feels the least 18 and up that night. Here it's more of a standing room only place and usually always has a variation of either live music or watching parties for sports games. Last night it was for the Blackhawks game so we popped in only to quickly pop out when the place was so packed we would have had to fight people to get to the bar. Depending on the night and your mood this place can be hit or miss. If the Guilty Pleasures still play here however, definitely check them out. read more

Thirsty is always our groups rendezvous point and where we love to start the night. The music is great (hip hop) and the drink prices are always reasonable no matter what day of the weekend it is. Thursdays is $2 you-call-its and they have $3 running specials through the weekend on their Frosty Bombs and Longhorn Lemondrops. Both probably do not have that much alcohol in them but they are tasty. The bartenders are really fun and it's clear they love their job. The dj cracks me up and gets the crowd pumping. read more
