The Thompson is a wonderful place but the bar and music that is played is only for one group of people. Many black folks spend a lot of money at the Thompson but it seems that everything is catered to everyone except black folks. Why is that? Black people seem to always be the folks that spend the most time and money on things and for services but we always get looked over!!! For this reason I wouldn't recommend the Thompson hotel as a nice happy hour spot...The staff and Bartenders are amazing folks and have no control over corporate BS but this place definitely has a culture of white! read more

I have been living in DC on and off for years, and decided to start staying in a hotel and buy in another state not too long ago to make it easier to maintain my life and to try out different locations in the city. I failed. This is my third stay at the Thompson Washington, and I don't think I'll be staying anywhere else. The location is already nice, as it's a bit quieter from the rest of the city but still has several bars and restaurants to choose from, a beautiful river walk, and great amenities like the gym, rooftop restaurant and bar, and first floor bar and restaurant. What makes this place a bit extra is the outstanding customer service, the modern and stylish decor, and the room and amenities that make me want to host my friends and colleagues. It's usually the customer service and the details that get me. They have an espresso machine instead of a coffee machine, more functional closet, higher quality bath products, and wonderful combination of textured furnishings throughout the room and hotel, making it luxurious and functional. I'm sad and glad to say I'll be staying here again, soon :) read more

This is the lump crab cake! There is very little filler and it comes with a delicious lemon aioli! The staff is phenomenal and they have a gorgeous rooftop and it's walking distance from the Navy Yard Metro. I would recommend the crab cake and the Buttermilk chicken (not pictured). They have specialty cocktails which all seem to look good. I had the cinnamon Manhattan and it was delicious. It's garnished with a blueberry. Terrific location in the heart of Navy Yard. Hotel is clean, spacious lobby area and has decent restaurants. Seems like they want to be a "European boutique" which they interpret as impractical and rude. Room was nice, but pay extra for a "balcony" and you get a dirty walkout area below ground level. That's not a balcony. Room service and housekeeping took hours to arrive on simple requests. With $50 per night of added charges, you'd expect them to be responsive. Just one desk chair in room, so we spent a weekend sitting on the bed. And, virtually no drawers. Could be really nice, but they kinda missed it. read more

The Thompson Hotel was nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY! This was our first hotel staycation since February and with the the threat of the pandemic everywhere, it's hard to not be on edge! This was not the case at The Thompson! The hotel is extremely clean! They even go the extra mile by putting high touch items like the remote and "do not disturb" door signage in plastic that they change with each stay! They also have door seals on each ready room that lets you know that it's been cleaned and sealed! The rooms were spacious, beautiful and clean! They have great WiFi and cell phone service and the service team are amazing and accommodating with each of our requests! We spent our last night at Anchovy Special! The drinks are so fresh and amazing! The views were beautiful and the staff were extremely happy and helpful! They don't have ice machines available on the floors. However, if you call the front desk they will send the ice buckets to your room! We really enjoyed our stay and can't wait to book our next staycation soon! read more

UPDATE: I came here tonight for a monthly event I regularly attend and the experience was very different. The normal bar staff - Joe and Brittany - are currently on leave, and the bartenders they have filling in were inattentive and borderline nasty. A petite female bartender quoted me $28 for two drinks and charged me $35. Their attitudes were very short. As I mentioned previously, I am a regular here, but I won't be returning to this Thompson location until Joe and Brittany return. The current staff completely turned me off. read more

Over all, our stay at the Thompson was great! The staff is very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Especially our (new) friend at the front desk, Mike. He was awesome! The food at the restaurant is very tasty and the drinks were appropriately strong! My only constructive criticism(s) would be that the lighting in the rooms could be better, and the shower situation was a little awkward if you're not married to your roommate lol But the decor is stunning. Overpriced hotel, ridiculous cost to park car overnight, incompetent staff.. rooms are dark .. shower water cannot be regulated .. either freezing cold or scalding hot.. air conditioning not adjustable.. had engineers up to room 2-3 times.. nothing was resolved. Asked for late check out .. refused by one clerk .. granted by another! Never tidied up room although requested. Hmm. Not my fave place to stay!! read more

I've never stayed at this establishment before, but booked this hotel back in May for a pink concert as only two blocks away from the arena with valet/garage parking. ** Warning: they allow anyone to use their valet parking, not just patrons staying at the hotel, so by the time I checked in, they told me the parking garage was full and I could park several blocks away and then walk back to the hotel in the rain. No transfer shuttle service is offered. I didn't even go into the room but demanded a refund and left!!! Bad business practice! I'd you are going to let anyone park in the garage, than at least offer the clients paying for your hotel ,... shuttle service instead of expecting them to walk 4 blocks in the rain! Awful read more

Check in was supposed to be 4:00, by 4:45 there was a lobby full of people (attending Pink concert) waiting for their rooms to be ready. The clerks told us twice they would let us know when our room was ready but "forgot." They were taking phone numbers down but not names, seemingly just as a way to make it seem like they were doing something useful while hundreds of people wait for their rooms. We saw one lady and her daughter try to check in only to be told their reservation was cancelled (without the woman's knowing, only hours before and she had never gotten any cancellation confirmation). They had already valeted her car and she was told there was nothing they could do. It was a mess and very disappointing as we had dinner reservations that we had to change due to our room not being ready. We also were told via email on our confirmation that we had free breakfast with our booking, and when we went to the restaurant, they acted like they had no idea what we were talking about. Had to show them the email and they seemed annoyed that they had to, I don't know, do their job. Room was nice, elevators were slow and very difficult to use. When there were hundreds of people coming back from the concert, we were told the stairs were closed and only for going down, so there was a line outside at 12am to use the elevators of the hotel. Met some friends for drinks after work on a Thursday. It was not very crowded. The bartender, I later learned her name is Brittany, completely ignored me.I sat at the bar for about 15 minutes before the manager asked me if I had been helped.. Brittany was standing right in front of me and never acknowledged me. Manager got my drink and I waited for my friends to arrive. She ignored them as well. Another bartender named Jerome finally took their order. I finished my first drink shortly afterwards. About 10 to 15 minutes later Brittany came over and cleared my glass but still never acknowledged me. One of my friends noticed and asked Jerome for the manager. The manager came over and as my friend was explaining the situation Brittany came with in ear shot and stared down on of my other friends. Very unprofessional. Nice spot. We booked a room block and stayed at The Thompson for our wedding in April 2024. Throughout the process of booking our room block, it was extremely difficult to get in contact with a member of the sales team. I had to call and email the sales team several times, often times going weeks without a response from them. On one occasion, I had to escalate my communications to the manager in order to receive a response from the sales team. In addition, I requested early check in when I booked the Thompson Suite in June 2023 only to be told days before my wedding that both Thompson Suites had been granted late check out and they were unsure if they would be able to fulfill my request for early check in despite making the request almost a year in advance of our stay. The front desk staff was fantastic and pulled some strings to ensure we were granted early check in on the day of. The hotel was beautiful and we were very happy with our room and the service received once we had checked in. They provided us a complementary bottle of champagne and plate of assorted desserts and were quick to respond to any requests for glasses, ice, etc. Overall, the hotel is fabulous, but the sales and booking department are extremely hard to work with and leave you hanging until the last minute which is not ideal - especially for an event like a wedding. read more

Unfair & Costly Mandatory Destination Fees! I was really looking forward to staying at this particular hotel. It's associated with World of Hyatt hotels & I've been a World of Hyatt member/credit card holder for a while, yet rarely do I stay at Hyatt hotels because I'm also a member of Marriott & IHG, who treat their guests very well. I acquired Hyatt's Chase credit card to start accruing points & benefits, which would entice me to stay at this hotel chain's destinations more often. I've immediately hit a roadblock here at the Thompson DC though! First of all, I made 3 reservations, each one for 4 nights at this hotel directly through my Hyatt mobile app. Then I looked into Booking.com & found out that I could save $341.68 on each individual reservation by reserving through Booking.com instead... for the exact same room & services. When I booked through Booking.com, the reservation did show up on my Hyatt app, which I thought was very organized of the World of Hyatt, to already have my reservation in their system & on my app, even though I booked through a third-party. I know now that this is because I guaranteed my reservations with my World of Hyatt Chase credit card. Then, I noticed a $114 additional charge on each reservation; $342 total & that ain't chump change! When you add it all up, the upcharge & the money I saved by using Booking.com, adds up to a total of $1,367.04 in savings for the 3 reservations. I could not understand the additional upcharge because my Booking.com reservation specifically writes that all taxes & fees are included in my reservation. Therefore, I decided to call Hyatt & ask them 2 questions; Do they offer best price guarantee & gratefully the answer is yes. This alone will keep me interested in Hyatt! Then, I asked about this $114 additional fee. The sales rep's voice acted surprised & she answered by telling me it's a Destiination fee, as though I should've expected this charge. I asked her what does the Destiination fee include. She said it includes phone calls (which I already have), newspapers (which I won't read) & other "location specific excursions during my guest stay." How evasive can you be? This is a steep upcharge & not enough details to warrant the extra money Hyatt mandates me to spend. I didn't want it, yet it's mandatory, as though I'm being forced to open up my wallet & just handover $114 to a predator. The Hyatt reservation's associate said to me, "Everyone is doing it now." My first thought was, 'OK Airbnb, here I come in full force to you!' I decided to see if indeed everyone is doing it...So, I called Marriott & they're not doing it in DC & neither is IHG hotels. I had 3 separate reservations at the Thompson & I sadly canceled them all. I doubt I'll ever stay at this hotel because of their unfair business practices. If people don't object to these upcharges, more hotels will indeed start overcharging us all! They'll take whatever they can from us & give back as little as they have to. We do have choices & there is severe competition out there to get our business. We are in charge! But, we don't have to be vulgar about it. read more

My fiancé and I had planned our wedding over 1 year out in Navy Yard, and I had reserved a room block exactly 12 months out from the wedding date. I booked the Thompson Suite (a part of the room block!), for 2 nights, to the tune of $4,000, for the big weekend. I was provided a confirmation number, and over a half dozen times in the next year our room block and booking was confirmed. 4 days before our wedding, the Thompson Hotel sent me an email informing me that they have overbooked the Thompson Suite, and that they were kicking us out. The bride is welcome to get ready in a conference room or event space, and we could have other rooms. After speaking to the manager, they provided no useful explanation and no real solution - just an I'm sorry and we wish you all the best. For all of the brides and grooms out there, steer yourselves and your guests away from The Thompson Hotel. I sincerely hope that nobody else has to have their wedding night ruined days before their wedding. read more

Overall a win for DC getting a nice Thompson and Maialino (Danny Meyer) in the navy yard. The rooms are well done and I have no complaints there. The lobby is confusing and has zero warmth to it - not a place you want to hang out. Still - you can either head to maialino at night or a few other spots locally and that is enough for me as a business traveler. Will most likely be back if my meetings aren't too far away from this location. Maialino lacks the warmth and character of the New York sister - but if you have no comparison point then it's fine. read more

A friend and I were visiting from out of town and I was very pleased with my stay as the hotel was very clean, staff was very friendly and attentive. We visited the rooftop bar, that had an amazing view btw. LV was our bartender, she was energetic, had such a positive attitude and was super friendly. The drinks and food was good as well. Very nice hotel stayed for 3 nights recently only issue I had was the d.s Durga bow maker shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body cream were used in the bathroom with made me question the cleanliness of the room. I called down to the front desk and was told I could move rooms but was never offered new products. Had to throw the products out and purchase toiletries at a near by hotel. The concierge that picked up was rude and had mention he had did enough as far as service. I called down the next day and asked for new items and they said if they had some they would send them up and never did. For the price you pay for the hotel stay this should be a courtesy. read more

Staff super friendly. 2 stars taken away for the horrible "Thompson Signature Scent" they have that is being dispersed in the lobby and elevators that you can not get out of your mask and hair and clothes. I'm allergic to whatever they have in that sh#% and felt dizzy from inhaling it. Why on earth would a hotel decide for everyone that they all need to smell like a Christmas Tree car deodorizer.
