I had my car detailed at Thorpe Auto Detail last year. The car had some minor paint issues due to leftover residue from HVAC liquid leaking on the car while it was parked in a public garage. It was almost a brand new car, and I was looking for a place which could fix the issue without damaging the paint. He patiently explained the detailing process, how they would get rid of the residue marks while trying their best to preserve the original paint. I purchased a 2012 Mazdaspeed3 as a daily driver that would be parked outside in the elements. So I wanted to get the car detailed and paint protection done. I've probably had this place bookmarked for a year with the intention of coming in when my car's anniversary rolled around. One reason I'd been putting off getting my car detailed was because although I don't have all the tools to do it myself, I'm rather particular about it, especially regarding polishing. Without even mentioning my particularities about car maintenance, Thorpe Auto Detail seemed to share a similar mentality car care - only do what is necessary while preserving the integrity of your paint and clear coat. After speaking to the owner about their process, my confidence was won over. When I arrived to pick up my car the next day, they had the car parked under specific lighting to show me the great detail given during their work. My car looked just about as good as the day I drove it off the lot! Although I had a slight heart palpitation initially at quote I was given, the moment I saw what they did with my car - all the etching, swirl marks, minor scratches, on my paint, the dull leather and magically gone - I felt it was all worth it. I also had some bad luck when 3 hours after picking up the car, I noticed these odd orange flecks embedded on the car that weren't there before - apparently a result of pollen or rust from parking too close to the CalTrain tracks. I quickly called Dave for some advice on how to get rid of it since obviously it's impractical for me to keep going back if this just happens as a result of parking where I work. He was super nice and offered to show me how to take care of it and even sent me away with a care package of products! All in all, yes, there are plenty of car detailers out there who do a decently good job at a lower price, but if you desire absolute perfection, these guys are your best bet. read more

People are always skeptical of a place with too perfect of a rating, especially when there are many reviewers with not so many reviews. I took my chance with them anyway and here's what's up with this shop. This is the first time I've owned my own brand new car. Over the weekend, google maps had foresaken me during a road trip and took me through an off road service trail (near mt. shasta) that wasn't made for regular cars. My car was utterly marred with scratches everywhere. I've had this car less than a year, and it's already in this condition. The monday I returned, I searched for detailing shops all over SF and Southbay. I rang the number, and Dave picked up the phone and gave me a quote and said, that we should take a look at it together. If you've never had your car detailed at a shop like this before, just be forewarned that you're spending a few hundred dollars. Again, this is the first time for me, so after talking with Dave on the phone, I thanked him and told him I would need more time to decide as I was initially a little sticker shocked. I consulted my car enthusiast friends, and turns out the pricing was fairly on point and within a good range. Bonus points that it's close to work. I called Dave back and he told me I could bring it in the next morning. Awesome. So I bring the car in in the morning, and I show him the damage done. He said he'll do his best and started explaining all the different ways to clean the car, and the pros and cons of different things. Let me make a note here: There was absolutely NO upsell, which I greatly appreciate. There was some small talk after, and it turns out quite a few of my coworkers have had their cars detailed here before. Not just that, he remembers many of them in detail - even when its been years since he's seen them. What a memory! So I left the car with him at 8:30AM, and he told me he'd give me a ring around 2:30PM. Sure enough, at 2:25, he asked me to come by when I could (he actually said 15min, but I got there a bit earlier). The team was finishing up. Here is another show of character: When I approached, he greeted me, and gave me a quick summary with no real detail. Instead, he introduced his young team, and let them explain what they did for me. He basically said, this is the awesome team that did the work for you, they deserve the credit, let them take pride in their service and explain what they did for you. I find this super admirable. Finally, I paid via credit card, and chatted with them a bit more because the whole team is actually really fun to just talk and hang out with. Final Note: My car was actually cleaner with more of a shine than when I first bought it from the dealer. I've tried a few other locations for detailing but feel like I finally found a place I can keep coming back every year. Dave is super friendly and knowledgeable. I got Ceramic Coating (Optimum Gloss Coat) applied to my Subaru Outback from them. I found that Dave and his team is very conservative with the work they do. For example, there was a bird dropping on my rear lift gate. they cleaned it up and with close scrutiny under a paint light, I can see remnants of it probably because it has chemically gone down too far inside the clear coat. Looking to get my 8-month old Model X detailed, I gave Dave a call - he was really helpful, laying out my options for what I wanted to have done. He even suggested I wait until the day after the forecasted rain to have the car detailed. At drop off we went through the process and he made sure I was able to ask questions or point out any desires for the service. He then set me up with the loaner car - a new, pristine Corolla - to let me go on with my day. Pulling into the parking lot later that day, Dave and the guys were meticulously putting the finishing touches on the car, including areas I had no idea existed. When doing a final inspection with me, we noticed a couple stray dog hairs which then one of the guys removed. I didn't think I'd care as much about the exterior of the car, but wow does that protective coat make the car wildly smooth and shiny. As other reviewers have noted, the car really doesn't look WAY better than when I bought it brand new. I'm obsessed! If you're looking for the best detailer around, then just stop reading here - you've found it. I've been taking my cars to Dave for almost ten years now and feel confident saying that you won't find better service than from Thorpe Auto Detail. He makes it easy for you - either by picking up and dropping off your car at your home/work or giving you a loaner car. Yeah, that's right...a loner. I can't get a loner when I take my car to the dealer, but I get one from my detailer? Fantastic. And then of course there's the actual detail job. I have a 2001 Camaro SS that gets open road raced and a 2006 Dodge Magnum for my daily driver. Both get abused in their own way. The Camaro is garaged most of the time, but when it gets out, it's subject to bird strikes and running through swarms of Mormon Crickets (easily the nastiest, juiciest, stinkiest bugs in existence) at 150+ MPH. The Dodge suffers the trials of daily life - bird poo, road spray, trips to Tahoe, etc. Both cars always look like the day I bought them when I get them back from Dave. You'd never guess they were the same cars I'd dropped off. If you call for a quote, it's easy to be taken back by his price, but it's worth it. He's not like Classic car wash where they have 10 different tiers of details. Whenever you take your car there, you're getting the full monte - clay bar, swirl removal (if necessary), quality wax job, scotch guarding the carpet, lexol on the leather, etc. etc. etc. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. If you're planning on keeping your car for the long haul and you don't want it to look like a junker in ten years, Dave's service is invaluable. My husband has been taking his 1993 GMC to Dave since it was new, and the paint is still flawless. So there you go. If you love your car, or at least want to protect your investment in it, get on a plan with Dave. He'll help you keep it looking like new for years. read more

I found these guys on Yelp and was looking for a great detail place. I just picked up my car from them getting a FULL DETAIL since my car was in a desperate need of it. I parked it in a lots for 2 weeks and it was next to a construction site so you can imagine how bad it was not to mention the hard water stains and dog hair I had. My car looks FABULOUS, it's looks better than when I first bought it. The paint looks so nice they use a clay substations to coat and protect the paint while giving it a smooth finish and even taking some of the light scrathes out. My car looks perfect! I did the 5 year Opti-coat for my new car. I am so glad I invested in keeping it looking great. :::The Classic Car Wash TRIED to sell me on their cheaper car coat. Last time I washed my car (when there were NOT even customers there) I ask them to dry it well because I wanted it to be water spot free when I dropped it off to get coated. They couldn't even get that right! ::: SOOOOOO happy I paid a little bit more money for perfection instead of taking it to a place that can't even get it half way dry after a simple wash. My car was also ready in 24 hours. They even let me drop it off Sunday AND were kind enough to come over on their day off and put it in the shop overnight so they could work on it monday. I can not recommend this place enough. Spend a little bit more for perfection and the peace of mind that you can TRUST the people working on your car. They even offered me a less expensive option that lasts 2 years in case I couldn't afford the one I really wanted. I just had my 08 Saturn Sky detailed there and I couldn't be happier. I called around and spoke with several other detailers and saw examples of their work before deciding to go here. Dave was really friendly on the phone and explained the entire detail process. I called back on a Monday and was able to get an appointment the next day. I'm very particular about my car, which my friends, family and neighbors think is pretty amusing for some reason. I've been known to wash it late at night after work. It came from the dealer with swirl marks, which I wasn't able to polish nor wax out myself. I don't mind hand waxing the entire car, but when it comes to high-speed polishing I leave it to the pros. They clay-barred the whole car, then polished, then waxed it. They were even able to polish out the two light scratches that had been bothering me for months. The only downside is that a full detail doesn't come cheap, but if you're as obsessive about your car as I am it's money well spent. read more

My friend recommended me to go there to put opti-coat for my new car. It's more expensive than wax but since I don't have time to wax the car so I just did it anyway. Turned out opti-coat is so much better than wax. Not only water and dust won't stick on the surface but it forms a hard transparent layer which protects the car so well. And here is the story: The week after I got opti-coat, I stopped by Costco and grab a few bottles of wine (I know, shouldn't park a nice car in Costco...), and when I came back, I saw a scratch on the front bumper. Thanks to the opti-coat it wasn't really obvious but you can see some paint left on it. I called Dave right away. He told me to bring the car to the shop and he fixed it by removing the damaged opti-coat and reapply it back. I am so glad that I put opti-coat otherwise whoever did it would just get the paint off and I have to repaint the bumper. Another nice thing is that I don't really need a car wash, just water will just clean the car 90%... I am very happy with Dave's service and I will come back when I buy another car. read more

David and his team did an amazing job on my car. They do a real "detail" job, where every inch of the car looks spotless inside and out. So much attention to detail that you can't find a flaw in the car. As opposed to some detail shops that just hand wash and vacuum the inside-- there's a huge difference, and these guys go the extra mile. It's very much worth the price, which isn't too much more than a basic detail shop. They also corrected a few places on my car that had damage-- scrapes on the side and bumper gashes to the point that they are almost unnoticeable now. Just bought my new car, BMW X3 M Competition in Dark Graphite Metallic. Brought it in to Dave to get a "new car package" done. Went through everything, told them what I wanted and cared about. They had a loaner which was awesome. Went to work, came back and was blown away. The dark gray was so sharp and deep you could see the colors popping in the metallic coating. Dave was prompt and polite. The shop was clean and they even detailed my kids car seat. They noticed a couple things the dealership hadn't shown me as well which was great. Based on reviews here on Yelp, I used Thorpe Auto Detail to clean my 14 year old BMW 540i. Dave did an amazing job taking the dirt and age off this well used, well loved car. The exterior shines like never before and the interior is perfect. When I made the appointment over the phone, I mentioned the leather seats were looking worn. He coordinated with an outside vendor to have the seats re-dyed. No more cracks or scraped marks on my seats now!! He had the re-dye done on-site so I did not have to take my car to another place. Now that is customer service. Dave knows what he is doing and has amazing customer service. Other reviews have said the cost is high. I do not agree. His pricing is fair and honest. After what I have spent at the local "classic" car wash for their detailing, I feel Thorpe Auto Detail is very reasonable.
