Love it!!! The staff was AMAZING to say the least, so friendly and welcoming. We started with clam chowder which was to die for.. seriously so good. Then they brought out delicious corn bread and rolls with butter which were hot and delicious, I ordered the steak and scallop meal, they cooked it absolutely perfect!!! It was absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend it. My brother ordered their baked shrimp and a baked potato and ate every bite of it. We then had a fun conversation with our waitress and the owner. Felt like we were at home it was such a comfortable and fun atmosphere. Would definitely recommend. Stopped in for dinner tonight...1st time there. Tall brunette waitress tells us clams are great, haddock is so popular. You can mix 1/2 of this and 1/2 of that. We really trusted her honesty. WRONG. Haddock was just ok. Clams are tiny and not much taste. Waitress never mentioned that switching out clams/shrimp would add another $10.00 to the bill. So much for honesty. This place is really just a bar that serves 16 oz drinks. Perfect if that's what you want but don't waste your money on dinner...you will be very disappointed! No wonder the restaurant side was empty but the bar was hopping. read more

The food is hopelessly bland and the clientele is basically middle-aged townies longing for their early-20s glory days. The service was fine. The surroundings were ok. The food was a big disappointment. My husband had the seafood pie & I had the Mac & cheese. Every single time I go to this restaurant, there is no hostess there to seat you. I have had to wait at least 5 - 10 minutes to even get someones attention. Working in customer service, this should be one of the easiest problems to avoid. I want this restaurant to succeed but they are not helping themselves. The Three Cod Tavern is a fantastic restaurant; the staff is friendly, the food is FABULOUS and the prices are reasonable. Their Clam Chowder is one of the best I have ever had. So I'm new to the area and was strolling around Marblehead with the family on one of my few days off. We were hungry and decided to stop into three cod tavern and what a mistake that was. My first impression was that they were annoyed to see us come in with a 1 year old baby. The waitress wasn't pleasant, was slow with everything, the food sucked and the place literally smelled. I'd like to give Three Cod three stars, as we found the atmosphere homey and welcoming and the staff super-friendly. The place was busy and folks were greeting one another and generally having a good time. However, I primarily go out to dinner to eat not socialize, and our experience with Three Cod's meal offerings matched many other reviewers -- a disappointment. The lobster mac and cheese was listed as an appetizer, but at $15.95 it was priced as a meal, and the waitress said it was plenty large enough to serve as one. I'm still searching for a stunning version of this dish, and Three Cod's is not it. It was runny in the middle and bairely warm. The lobster to pasta ratio was way smaller than it should have been. The lobster itself, what there was of it, was sweet and moist, I'll say that. My wife order the shrimp with pasta, and reported that it was only "meh". We both got garden salads which were good. We split a chocolate ice cream pie slice which wasn't particularly fresh and skimpy on the fudge sauce. So, three or even four stars for the downhome atmosphere and pleasant wait staff, but only two for the food. read more

I struggle to give this place 2 stars, however i will give them the benefit of the doubt that i may have come in on a bad day. My fiance and i were starving and having just moved to the area we decided we would try a new spot for lunch. The food was average AT BEST and our service was awful. Stopped in today for a late lunch....We had originally stopped at Palmers down the road but they only had a brunch menu ...so we had a cocktail there and moved on to Three Cod Tavern....We walked in around 2:30 and the Tavern was mobbed.....Fortunately for us a couple of nice gentlemen were finishing up and told us to grab their bar seats...since there were no empty seats to be found.....The menu was a nice Pub like menu...nothing fancy but a good variety for Pub type food in our opinion....which is what we were looking for. Bartender was friendly...Environment was comfortable...We ordered a couple sandwiches.... Fried Haddock for my husband and Grilled Chicken for me....and for the price we thought they were decent....I would come back again...when I'm in the mood for simple, reasonably priced Pub Food in a friendly environment. read more

This place is great. Food is fresh and people are nice as can be. Prices are excellent. We eat here often and love this place best for seafood without spending out the college tuition. Chowder amazing, steak tips great, specials a good deal and always wonderful corn bread. A real fishing town restaurant with good folks and great atmosphere. The bar is great with good beer on tap and tvs wherever u look with a sports event on most of the time. This place is the best it gets in my book. read more

Best lobster roll in town and great service!

This had to be one of my worst meals on my weekly road trips around New England to find the next great restaurant. We should have know when we walked in and it was empty something was up. We had read the chowder was great. It took 25 minutes to serve, which the inexperienced waitress had to serve one bowl at a time and it was like warm milk. We then had six horrible oysters. Slow service and bad food was very disappointing. read more

Went there on a whim and I was totally impressed with my meal. The haddock was incredibly fresh, hot and tasty. Even the french fries were exceptional, non-greasy and a lightness to them. Visited Three Cod Tavern another day. Should say that lunch menu is very limited. and way too expensive for what we got. I ordered a Haddock plate. The fish piece was so small, less then 1/3 lb.....it cost around $17. ..ridiculous. Though food seemed freshly cooked I had a very bad heartburn the entire day after this lunch. Food was just average and absolutely overpriced! I would NOT try this place again any time soon. read more

The first thing I noticed when I went into the Three Cod Tavern was the utter lack of people in the restaurant. There was nobody seated at the bar or at the tables and there was a single waiter there, oddly holding a fishing pole. As soon as I walked in he handed me a menu filled with delectable choices and an impressive wine list. I ordered a simple hamburger to get a feeling for the overall quality of the place. He immediately went into the kitchen and stayed there for about an hour. When he came back, he plopped a gigantic uncooked codfish on the table. I asked him where my hamburger was. He seemed confused and went back into the kitchen. A few days later he came back with two more fresh cod. Feeling unsatisfied, I asked for my food once again. He then left the restaurant. Seeing myself faced literally with three cod as my meal, I decided to at least give them a try. I bit into the raw fish and felt an orchestra of tastes flow into my mouth, unlike anything I ever encountered in my culinary exploits before. Hands down best restaurant in the country. read more

Our experience at the 3 Cod Tavern for dinner was pretty pathetic. The food was simply horrid. We had what was called the 'seaside sirloin', billed as a "tender and juicy sirloin grilled just right." Well, let me tell you; it was none of those things...it was a dry, burned on the outside, raw on the inside lump of something that didn't resemble meat at all. Pin beef, all the juices, if there were any, went into the broiler that burned the meat. The baked potato was steamed in tin foil and tasted like tin foil. Mashed potatoes were inedible. The salad, a few pieces of iceberg lettuce with a couple of sprigs of some green, two tiny pieces of limp cucumber, and 4 black canned olives. The rolls and butter were good, thankfully, because that's about all we finished. I felt sorry for the wait staff...thy were nice kids working in a place that sorely needs somebody that knows how to cook. Marblehead isn't known to be a gourmet mecca, but this place is beyond belief. We went because of those three, four, and five stars showing up on Yelp. Who the hell wrote them, the owner? I was so disappointed in the place...won't be going back, that's for sure. Too bad. Gads, but they badly need a cook in the kitchen. read more

A local bar-fly hangout with greasy, fried fish and french fries, hard baked potatoes, and tasteless "wedding-style " entrees. Owners are not welcoming, or quality conscience. I have been about three times in the past three months and it's a great place to watch the game, have a good highball or draft beer and get a very good meal at a more than reasonable price. I am unsure about previous reviews comments on the age of the patrons. I am 35 and have been with friends and seen other 30 and 40 somethings there as well. For dinner, I have had the steak tips and was impressed. For $13, you get a good amount of steak, plus two sides. The baked potato was hot, the meat was cooked to order, and I never had to wait long to get another drink or a water with dinner. Another time, I had baked haddock cooked New England style. It was a fresh piece of fish and cooked to buttery, bread crumb perfection. It's nice to go somewhere in Marblehead/Swampscott that is not prententious and charging $6 for bottle of beer. I would not recommend this place. I dined there with three other people. There was a problem with all of our dinners. The steak tips were so burnt we had to send them back. The chicken dish was also over cooked. And the rice was overdone on the other dish. When we mentioned it to the manager she was not very nice. She said she would take off one of the dishes but it was still on the bill when we got it. We had to bring it to her attention again to get it removed. read more
