The worst car rental experience I've ever experienced. They are running a scam. I was charged for additional fees ($400) without running them by me. When I asked what the fees were for, I was told "daily fees". They did ask me if I wanted toll coverage and when I asked if there were even tolls in the area I was going to in, they immediately said yes. There were in fact ZERO tolls. When I called the next day after reviewing the "fees", there is only a number that connects you to "customer support" in another country. They could not help with anything, including offering a phone number to the location. They recommended I just drive back to the location (100 miles away). Additionally, after checking in, they sent me out to find the car by myself in the dark with my two small children. When I couldn't find the car due to lack of signage, no one would help me. People just sat around and pointed while I hauled around my children and luggage giving me general directions that sent me in circles. They treated me like an inconvenience. I picked up a car from the airport location and I thought I checked it well enough that I didn't see any damage. It was at night. The next morning when I was driving as the sun came up, I noticed a crack at the top of the windshield. I was alarmed but figured they already knew about it. Nope. They ended up making me pay for windshield damage. They have ghetto trash working the return lot which explains a lot to me. read more

Agent at Thrifty counter tried hard to get me to purchase "protection," denied that my credit card's coverage was valid with Thrifty, and was reluctant to accept my personal (Progressive) auto coverage as sufficient. Then she had me hit "approve" on the little terminal in front of my, with no text explaining what I was approving. When I got to my destination I saw that she had added a $43 refueling charge. From this and other reviews here it would suggest that third party reservations often get harassed into upsells, and if that doesn't work, they just add on something else. We just had a NIGHTMARE experience with them. I booked a 1 week rental via Priceline at the RDU location. The charge was supposed to be $412.98. We purchased additional daily insurance with Priceline too and the Thrifty counter rep uses this emotional manipulation tactic to try to get us to buy more insurance. I said no thank you repeatedly. When did no turn into push harder? We get there and suddenly they take $740.00 from my credit card. They give us the rental agreement & send us out to pick a car to leave. We go to leave the lot and they won't let us leave. Why? Because they tried to charge another amount of $175 for God knows what on my credit card AFTER we thought all the charges were done. My credit card declined as it triggered security because they already got the $740 and they were making multiple attempts to try to charge more! Loving my credit card security team! I go in and explain, my $400 booking is now almost $1,000?!!? So I said I wanted to cancel. The 1st lady goes and gets another lady. By this time I am upset. I'm not yelling, but talking faster. She tells me to calm down. I wasn't irrational or unreasonable, but upset as anybody would be. But I am quite mindful and not acting out of emotions. (Have you known anybody to calm down after being told to calm down?) She totally lacks people skills. I state that she doesn't get to define my emotions and I am rightfully upset as they took almost double my money AND wont let us leave the lot. She says she wants to explain the charges. I explain I don't want an explanation, I just want to cancel. She continues to refuse cancelling. So of course I'm upset. I have a lot to do to prepare for the holiday and she seemed to smile at knowing she was wasting my time. She continued to smirk as if she was on a strange power thing. She then explains that the extra charge was for my 2nd driver. I asked why that was not explained to me at the counter before we left. They had us sign and give both licenses and pay before giving us the rental agreement. (Again the $740 and not the $412.98 as promised in the original booking). My 23 year old son (the additional driver) was part of the original booking for the $412.98. Why did it have to be so shady with them? And they waited until we left the building. They know it is wrong because they wait until after you leave to actually charge these charges. This manager walked away and refused to cancel because I wouldn't do anything except want to cancel. So I stayed in the lobby and called Thrifty customer care. After going through the phone tree and waiting, they explained I had to call Priceline, whom I had arranged the original booking. So I call Priceline and that rep was so confused. She asked why they charged double. All the while I am explaining this in front of all of those waiting in line for their car rentals. Priceline asked me for the managers name who was refusing to cancel the booking. The lady refused to give her name (they also don't wear name tags). You know someone is hiding something when they refuse to even give a first name. Priceline then placed me on hold and called Thrifty themselves and was going back and forth between them and myself. The manager claimed she had the right to refuse to help cancel because she didn't like that I was upset. I wanted to yell, trust me... BUT that gets nowhere and my focus was really to just cancel and go. I needed to leave. I explained she had the right to refuse service, but did not have the right to obtain property under false pretenses. (Property, being my money). You cannot take money and also refuse the rental. One or the other. But you don't get to keep $740 AND refuse the rental. Had they told us of the additional charges at the counter I would have just said never-mind. But they didn't give me that opportunity because they attempted to take extra money after we left to the parking lot without communicating to us. Priceline customer care noted the situation. The lady who refused to cancel ended up calling another manager out because I stood in the lobby with customer care. Another manager came out and I explained the situation. Both of us kind and courteous to one another and I explained that this was unnecessary and shady and people get upset when shady things are done to them and she agreed. She took me to the back office and cancelled the agreement for me and I am just waiting on the refund to my credit card. If it doesn't happen in a few days I will file a chargeback. She also had no problem giving her name for Priceline. This is absolutely unfair and deceptive practices! Luckily I have a couple of cars. So my adult son is just able to take my car and I can borrow my teens car for the week. Not everybody is in the position to be able to have a backup. I hope Thrifty loses the ability to sell booking on these 3rd party platforms. I also hope someone makes changes and makes better choices to operate more ethically. read more

What ever you do don't get the special! I did for my husband and grandson and they gave him a electric car. It was totally miserable for them. They did not go over how to charge it or anything. It took forever to charge and it was hard finding a place to charge it. Even after telling them that he would take anything other than a full electric car they said for a extra $26 a day they could. Rented car at RDU airport in Raleigh, NC The pick up took about 90 min, despite the QR codes posting that you could enter your information thru app and skip the counter (NOT TRUE). Really did not save any time from what I could tell. After trying to upsell me on several 'insurance' plans (and me declining), I finally got the car (price was higher than what I was quote through expedia, however agent said I would have to take it up with expedia, but they were not the ones charging the higher price). The real kicker was the toll charges they billed me after the rental return. That is one service the agent did not try to sell me on, OR give me any instructions on how to pay for them on my own. I sent email asking how I could avoid the hefty processing fees and they never replied. 2 weeks later I get the statement saying they already charged me $20 on $5 of tolls. Worst experience in a long time on renting, so won't be using Thrift again anytime soon. read more

When we got back to airport had to wait in line for almost an hour and then got attitude from all reps, even manager. No offer for compensation for our lost time with our plans. I rented a Thrifty car rental in San Juan last week through Expedia. It took 2 hours to get the car, the car was not clean, and there were an additional $104 in charges billed on top of the price+taxes quoted by Expedia. None of the additional charges were mentioned by the Thrifty and Hertz reps I spoke with. Their customer support site would not take a submission and their 800 customer support line sent you to the web. Clearly they don't want the business. read more

Just be careful! They will charge you twice -- once for the actual rental, which may appear cheap. But then a second time for various fees and coverages (coverage, premium roadside services, and fuel -- though I swear I didn't agree to any of these services except for the fuel, since my insurance already cover the former two). read more

As covered in the prior reveiws, beware of the toll charge administrative fees. I had $4.98 in toll fees, for which Thrifty charged a $90 administrative fee. When renting I wasn't given an alternative way to pay the tolls and it's not like you can stop and pay at the toll booths anymore. I've never seen this with any other rental company so I will definitely avoid Thrifty in the future. In addition they didn't have the right size car seats that we requested when we arrived to rent the car. The shuttle drivers were extremely courteous and helpful, but I just can't overlook what essentially feels like a scam. read more

Terribly disorganized! I was told to go to an area of the parking lot at the Raleigh Airport to pick out the car I wanted--this was 6pm in January, cold and dark. I walked out to the lot and there were no cars! I waited, and finally walked back to the office where I was told that cars were coming. I went back out to wait. No cars. 20 minutes and I went back again, when they sent me to the Hertz section of the lot where people were waiting. Finally a car pulled in from being washed and the lady said "Just take it". 25 minutes. After I drove away and was on road I noticed a warning on the control panel that the tires needed service--this light was on when they gave me the car. The next morning we filled the tire when a more adamant warning that the right rear tire needed air came on. The next day the same warning, so we got more air. Looked it up and found out that this is dangerous and can lead to a blowout at high speeds. Now on the other side of North Carolina, we called Thrifty and they said to exchange the car at the nearest airport, which we did in Asheville on our way back to Raleigh. They had to close out the account and start a new one. We made it to Raleigh and dropped off the car, where the sign said leave the keys and be on your way. Now back from the trip and I got a phone call and an email that the car is overdue at Asheville. I called and talked to an agent who checked into it and eventually sent an email that the account is closed. Today I got another call that the car is overdue...! read more

Despite Thrifty settling a lawsuit over extra charges for tolls in FL, this location of Thrifty keeps up the tradition by charging you an extra $15 for every toll you pass. They haven't learned. I hope the NC attorney general follows Florida's example in court and we can get some of this money back. In the meantime, avoid this, and every other, Thrifty location. read more

Look what happened to one of my employees. When she was in Durham last, she rented a car from Thrifty. She does not know the area and Thrifty did not ask her if she wanted a tag for her car for tolls. She went to dinner one night using a new highway. There were toll stations that were unmanned without signage to show how to pay or if they were even active. She went through 6 stations and was charged less than a dollar for each. Here is the bad part....Thrifty sent her a letter stating that they took care of the tolls totaling $3.52 BUT They added a $15 administrative fee to each of the 6 tolls, now charging her 93.52!!!!!! She tried to dispute it, but was only given an $18 credit. Please warn others about this ridiculous charge from Thrifty in the NC area that might be using this highway. Drivers beware! read more

The people were good. The car was OK. Thrifty/ Hertz business practice boarders on fraud. After the rentals, I found charges from "ETRAWLER LTD, DUBLIN IRL" on my statement. Turns out, the charges are legitimate and linked through Thrifty/ Hertz when using the "prepay rate". I contacted Thrifty/ Hertz. The representative kindly pointed out the charges were disclosed in under "terms and conditions". I have not found any statements indicating a third party charge. But, I am not a lawyer. Not including all the charges in price quotes and linking to charges not documented on the statement is deceitful. Do not trust Thrifty / Hertz. read more

Caution! Rent at your own risk, there's a high probability of a miserable experience. You may find yourself without a car late at night or erroneous charges for tolls hundred some miles away. Or an hour long line with only one agent on duty. This fall I arrived at 11 o'clock at night at the thrifty office and was told there are no cars available even though I had a reservation. They left me to walk around the rental car area late at night looking for a car. I eventually found one at Alamo. In December I received a notice for a toll charge from a bridge in New Jersey in September. Funny thing is I was in Raleigh hundreds of miles away. I disputed the claim and they denied it and said I drove 1000 miles in two days, Sure enough my receipt said I had driven exactly 1,000 miles when I may driven 70 miles.. I even presented my meal receipts during the trip. It appears that there is a possibility that employees may artificially inflate the mileage to use the cars and that there may be a scam going on of fake toll charges somewhere down the line. read more

PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE RENTING FROM THRIFTY CAR RENTAL AT RALEIGH?DURHAM AIRPORT I reserved a car, chose the wild card. Went to pick up my rental and was told the car I reserved was no longer there so I had to pay a $10 upgrade fee for them not having the car. That should have made me run then, but because it was after 11:30pm and most car rentals shut down. They had me. SO I was then told that I could prepay for gas now or bring in the car with a full tank, but here is the kicker I had to do it within 10 miles of the airport and bring a receipt! WOW who does that? So the next when I came to my senses I contacted their customer service, advised I will bring the car back and was told I would only be charged $30. I turn in the car not only am I charged the upgrade fee, go figure, I was now charged an early return fee of $25. I went up to the desk and asked to speak to a supervisor. WHAT A JOKE! The supervisor told me this was implemented a couple of months ago. I asked well don't you think that you should tell the customer this, oh he said well yeah but there's nothing we can do! This is so UNPROFESSIONAL. I ended up spending over $71 and didn't even have the car 24 hours. I think called the horrible customer service believe to be the corporate section and was told oh they aren't give you any money back. I am going to post on Twitter, BBB and anything else I can.
