What could you improve? Start from the basics - customer service and genuinely caring about your customers. My only wish was that I would have read the rest of these reviews before choosing Thrifty for our rental car company. If you want hidden fees from a scam artist, followed by waiting in a line for 1.5 hours to get a car, then by all means, this is the place to go. Come on Thrifty - take some ownership, read the reviews, and care about improving your business. It's horrible. We will not be using your services one more day in our lifetime. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY CAR in Maui! I prepaid our rental one month in advance for a 7 passenger SUV, received a skip the line message to choose a car only to get a a m sage "The vehicle you choose is NOT available" Thus we waited in line for 9O min to reach the service counter, 8 counter services available but only 3 people working them on a Friday afternoon! While the folks at the counter were pleasant, one gal waisted time trying to up sale cars upgrades & insurance knowing the line was out the door! The employee gal standing at the sliding door at 12:00 noon on October 4th was rude and would not allow folks to wait inside out of the high heat/humidity. Once we reached the counter and received our reservation, the agent apologized for the wait only to head out to row 7 and still no car available. So we waited another 30 min in the thrifty rental car garage. This same previously rude employee managing was now out on the thrifty car rental garage floor and continued to be rude and nasty when we asked where our car was on row 7? Albeit I made the comment that our customer was experience was "F.....ing unacceptable" Any employee working with the public has the responsibility to acknowledge a customer's frustration and accommodate customers... NOT to lash back out at essentially stating it was not her problem. When I asked to speak to a manager she finally came back to our family of 6, approached us from a distance and yells "OK do you want a car or not" Pointing to an available SUV that was dirty... but again finally available to us after a long flight and two hour wait to get a vehicle. This employee was as out of line and displayed UNACCEPTABLE behavior and should be fired! unfortunately she was not wearing a name badge. I cannot reach a live person on their customer service phone. We arrive to get our suburban we already paid for and everything, but they immediately start saying they don't have a suburban. Ok so they then say they have only a five seater available. I explain we have 6 total in my family and I already paid through my wife ticket at work program. I tried to explain both my wife and I are both first responders but it seemed to make them want to not help me even more . I begged them but they just smiled and said they could not help us because we did not have a credit card. The tickets at work said major debit card or credit card. It seemed the manager along with Melo and EG were being passive aggressive the entire time and enjoying putting my family and I in a rough position. When I asked for their names, they became even more agitated and did not want to do it until it kept persisting, and then they wrote their names on a card and a sloppy manner trying to disguise their names. We fortunately were able to get help next-door at Payless Rent-A-Car. They were the complete opposite of thrifty. At the end of the day, we still lost our $600 which they did not want to refund us. Please support me in sending a message to everyone to not use them. Enough is enough . This business has been doing this to too many people there needs to be a stop to this. Let's stop using them so they can go out of business and putting an end to their terrorizing of tourists. I know Hawaii is better than this. read more

This was a good deal if you're willing to wait in line. The line to actually get in to see a customer took about 45min to an hour. It took about 5 min for her to give us the car! You get to go pick out the car. Then about 10 min line to get out of the parking lot. They need more employees to speed up the process! read more

Improve the lost and found system. I had forgotten my iPad in the car on the passenger side floor. My watch and phone notified me I left it behind. When I called to let them know I was informed I had to go online and fill out a form online. Needless to say I filled out the form and monitored the list for months and could not even see that my item was turned in which tells me someone found it and didn't turn it in. read more

You will likely gave to face long lines once you get to the car rental location. Only 3 agents working and more than 30 people waiting. The express check in that they offer does not save time with the agent. You will have to provide the same information once again. When you finally get to an agent, they are often rude. They sent me to the parking lot to get my car but it wasn't ready. I had to wait 20 minutes for the car to arrive. When you arrive in Maui for vacation you don't want to spend time dealing with this type of BS. I recommend that you don't use Thrifty's or one of its sister companies (Dollar and others). OMG......never in the past 42 years of travel for my wife and i have i ever witnessed such incompetence. Ok, there were some reviews advising of long waits here, but with me being a BLUE CHIP and HERTZ GOLD member, advertising SKIP THE LINE, i felt confident there would be no issues, and i did use the "skip the line" option". i've never been so wrong in my life. there had to be at least 40-50 people all waiting for cars in an empty parking lot behind the rental office. there were NO cars and NO happy customers. the poor girl wearing the "get on the road faster" t-shirt should be getting paid triple whatever her current salary is. she constantly announced that vehicles are coming, and when i asked what the real answer was, she replied "thats better than telling everyone 2 hours or more". vehicles did come, but very very slowly one at a time still wet from being washed. there was no real line nor organization of any kind. i am very surprised there were no fist fights with customers jockeying for position. to top things off, i had THREE diffent prices on my quote all with the same reservation number. the lowest price was on my emailed confirmation, another higher price when i was verifying on their website, and yet another even higher price when i called to try to fix over the phone. oh yeah, their customer service line is somewhere overseas where english is not their primarly language, and to no surpise, they were UNABLE to correct my rental price even after i emailed them my copy. all i can say is, good luck here. hope your Maui vacation time isn't too valuable read more

ONGOING THRIFTY WEEK FROM HELL CAR RENTAL. I reserved a convertible Ford Mustang. or similar vehicle, for a week in Maui. When I arrived I was told that the ONLY car available was a Cooper Mini. Absolutely no other cars are available. I can, however, upgrade to a Jeep or an SUV. Long story short, I am on day three in a car that is ABSOLUTELY NOT similar to a Ford Mustang. I am climbing in and out of a tiny car with a bad back which is a really painful process. Only one suitcase fits in the trunk. My other suitcase had to be stuffed into the back seat. The only easy way to get the suitcase in the backseat is to get in, start the car, and put the top down. I do have the option of returning the Mini and upgrading to another vehicle that I don't want. Thrifty really needs to review the definition of "similar". read more

Thrifty Car Rental you are the worst car rental company in the history car rental companies. Booked your services back in July on Maui, two hour wait at the counter, and then another 45 minute wait for them to bring the wrong unwashed car, another 45 minutes to resolve that. If that had been all that happened then it wouldn't be too bad.... However, charges were deducted immediately and then, for some reason unknown to me, my CC company or Thrifty , a credit was issued for the full amount and I was delinquent. After talking to your agent and my CC company we agreed that a credit had been issued even though no one knows why.... I immediately paid the balance .... Now on 10/28 I receive another letter in the mail talking about you are sending my account to collections. I have verified with my bank that this payment has been processed and paid in full and there has not been anything credited back to me since the second payment has been received on your behalf. Your customer service representative Kris confirmed my account has been placed in collections. I asked to speak with a supervisor and I was denied the opportunity. I attempted to give her the transaction ID numbers to which her reply... was Sir there is nothing we can do, we show you owe us. I will be calling corporate tomorrow in yet another attempt to get this resolved as I do not want to see this on my credit file, but I want you to know that I will not ever rent a car from you again. Your customer service is horrible and your billing process needs to be overhauled to a level efficiency and reliability. If this happens to end up on my credit report , I will use every legal remedy afforded to me by law and will be seeking any damages that are legally entitled to me. For those reading this post in the market for a car rental , do yourself a favor and pass on this outfit , they can't seem to get anything right read more

Vehicle wasn't bad. Filled the car with gas at Costco before returning (2 miles from the airport). Thrifty automatically charged me 2 gallons for gas. It was on full when i returned it. Shady business practice. Must show receipt for gas purchase to dispute. They even have an option to dispute on the phone which tells me they do this to everyone. read more

I hate to write negative reviews but I hope this will serve as warning for those looking to book with the Thrifty, Dollar, Hertz companies in Kahului airport. Not only is the wait in line long, more than 40 minutes. And that is with 4 customer service reps behind the counter. But they are dishonest. I had an Asian lady helping me and she seemed personable but upsold me on the CDW fee. I specifically remember her asking if it was something I wanted and I had said no. Then as I was looking at the charge I asked why it was more than expected when I paid a deposit and she said it was because of tax and fees. I take accountability that it was my mistake in not questioning further but after a flight and waiting all that time I just wanted to get out of there. I ended up paying $98 dollars more than I needed and feel like it was very sneaky on thrifty. I will never use their service again and urge others to be careful read more

It took an hour and half to get a car and then they charged me $75 for gas when I returned it full. I wasn't notified of the charge except by email. There's no way to talk to a real person to dispute the charge and the phone recording says I need to submit a receipt to receive a refund but doesn't say how. read more

car was clean and full of gas. we got an upgrade to a mustang from a compact car which was nice. what soured the experience and why I am writing was i was under the impression that insurance was around $120 US. which would have been totally acceptable. today I received a bill for $481 US on top of the $430 I had already paid for the rental. This means the insurance was 1.5 times the cost of the car rental. Had I know this I never would have gotten it but this was not properly conveyed. It's a shame. I was extremely hesitant to rent from Thrifty again in Maui after a bad experience last year. However, the deal was too good to pass up so I figured I'd be willing to wait an hour plus like last year to save money. This turned out to be one of the most efficient and satisfying rentals I've ever had. I didn't know that Kahului had totally upgraded the rental car facility, which is now a million times better than last year. After a two minute ride on a tram, I jumped off and got in the Dollar/Thrifty line. There were maybe 10 people ahead of me (as opposed to 50+ last year) and there were approximately eight agents working (vs. one to two last year). The line moved quickly and I was literally in my car (a brand new Kia Optima) within 10 minutes. I was dumbfounded. Everything is wrong here from the long wait for a shuttle to the rental location (every other rental place is running 2-3 times as often) and even longer lines once you arrive (they make the DMV look fast) to the cars that smell like a teenagers room (think musty smelly socks). Worse car rental ever. Never rent a car from this company. After we checked in, we waited for 1 hour for our car. The entire waiting room was filled with people impatiently waiting for their cars while the staff took their time and slowly gave out cars every 10-15 minutes. It felt like we were at the dmv. Terrible start to our vacation. If we had known we would waste an hour of our vacation time, we would've gone to a different car rental company and even pay a little extra. *Note: thrifty and dollar share the same space/cars so avoid dollar as well. read more

Took over an hour to get car..lines outside the door...3 counter people working. Car was the only good experience, BEWARE when you return your car at Maui airport. You are told to just leave the car and walk away with no paperwork. When I got home, I was emailed my closing bill and was charged 1 extra day rental..even though I had returned the car earlier than my rental contract called for. Called customer service and they told me it would take a month to get my $80 over charge credited back on my credit card! I have tried contacting Thrifty Management, but can't get a response back! I have rented cars all over the country and this was by far the most disappointing experience. We waited over a half hour in line at the pick up counter. Customer service was lacking and poor. No upgrade was offered and I was given vague instructions to the car. To our surprise, our car was fairly clean on the outside, however the inside was a disaster. There was dried mud, food wrappers, soda cans, and that was just the beginning. Rather than fight the line again, we decided to bite the bullet and clean it ourselves, which was not my idea of how we would begin our honeymoon. This experience has been horrible! Let's start with the fact that our rental Jeep was towed for parking violations that had not been satisfied. We had accidently input the wrong plate number and would have gotten a ticket that according to the parking company would have been forgiven but because there were 2 previous violations 3 months prior it was towed. Imagine coming out of the aquarium on your Hawaiian vacation and the vehicle you rented is GONE! Called the parking company and found out about the other 2 violations and that the Jeep was impounded. We had to get a Lyft, another $45 to take us from the aquarium to the airport. We asked to speak to the manager and she refused to come out to the counter. They did get us another Jeep but the next day called and said that we are responsible for the impound fee because "it wasn't their fault". Yes we would have gotten a ticket but not towed! Also our quote was for $667.00 for a week and even without the impound fee that they charged us was still $400 more than the "estimate". We contacted Thrifty corporate and the agency in Kahului to no avail but they end every email with "We hope you will allow us the opportunity to serve you again so that we can regain your complete confidence in Thrifty." and "We value your business and hope we will be able to serve you again." It will be a cold day in hell before they ever get any of my business - I would rather walk! I will never recommend Thrifty, Hertz or Dollar rental! read more

Friendly staff. Arrived at 1030pm and was the only one there so there was no wait. :) However.. Car was kinda dirty when we got in, and it had a bad odor. Woulda been nice to receive a sanitized car. While Returning the car, the person at the gate was kinda weird. Told us to pull up to one of the lanes as of there was a problem. I pulled up to the lane, and didn't know if we were suppose to stay there or what. After a couple mins of confusion, an employee saw us just sitting inside the car waiting and told us we can go. I want to thank the team at Thrifty. After we returned our car, I realized I had left my purse at a restaurant outside airport property and was in danger of missing my flight. The team was kind enough to drive us to the restaurant and drop us off at the airport. That is true customer service. I did have to take off a star because there is a long wait to receive a car. Even after paid, we waited over a half hour to get to the car. It did have a few dings in it but just be sure to properly report it before driving off of property. Happy vacationing! read more

When we arrived from the airport we had a 45 minute wait for a shuttle bus. Every other rental company had three or more buses show up while we stood there. If I'd realized that the office was less than a quarter mile away we could have just walked there. When we got to the car we realized that Thrifty's idea of a midsized SUV is a compact SUV to everybody else. We had to pay $220 more to get the size car we thought we were getting. They charged us almost $100 for a second driver. Nobody told us that when we rented the car. They just added another driver with no explanation of any additional fee. We didn't know about it until we checked the receipt. They were nice enough to waive half of the fee at that point. Now that we're leaving we got on the shuttle bus that positively reeked of marijuana smoke. Thankfully I'm only mildly allergic, so the nausea is starting to wear off - an hour later. I'm never renting from dollar or Thrifty again. read more

I am not typically one to leave a review but Peter at the Airport Thrifty Rental is an out of line, miserable man apparently. My mom rented a car, and when I was coming to get added as a driver he basically scared her into getting insurance for ME ($500). When I showed up I confirmed I had car insurance and did not need to add so I asked him to remove it, but he insisted I was young and didn't know anything. I worked at enterprise rent a car for several years, I ABSOLUTELY know the law and he shouldn't be telling people what their insurance DOES and DOES NOT cover. He doesn't know the ins and outs of peoples personal policies. Most condescending prick I have ever come across at a rental car company and I'm shocked they let an employee speak to customers in the manner he did. He told me not to "interrupt him when he's talking to his primary driver" when I was trying to explain to my mom that my insurance would cover me. He continued to BADGER me and told her if anything happens people will "come after her." He's honestly a disgrace to the word customer service and legit should be fired. From the airport, you must take a shuttle to the rental car lot. All the other brands seemed to have shuttles backed up and waiting. Not Thrifty. Waited about 15 minutes for the shuttle. Got to the lot. Gave them our pre-paid rental info. Were told to have a seat and we'd be called when our car was ready. About 45 minutes and counting. This is the worst place to rent a car. Waited a half hour for thr shuttle, then when we got to the car rental place it got worse. Long lines, 45 min wait. They overbooked so they didn't have cars ready for anyone waiting. Took an additional hour and a half to get our car. Had to wait for someone to drop off the car in order to get a car. If you rent a car, and they know that you will be in by a certain time they should have one waiting for you. It's pretty simple. Will not be back. Lesson learned. I have booked with Thrifty many times and usually recommend, but this has been a nightmare. We booked prepaid and when we got to the rental desk, I gave my confirmation number/showed my email and she pulled up the reservation right away. They had a few extra days on our reservation which she removed and was no problem. However, when we brought the car back they said everything looks good, gave us our receipt and we realized we were charged our card for the full rental, discarding our prepaid price. We now have TWO $600 reservations on our cards. She had set up a NEW reservation under Dollar and we now had two bookings and Thrifty refuses to help in the situation. I am not sure if this is a game they like to play to get more money and hope people just don't want to deal with it, but I will no longer be renting through Thrifty or Dollar again. read more

-1 Star if I could give it. We had a car reserved and upon getting to the counter we were told that it would be a 30 minute wait and not even for the class of car we booked. Some of the people we talked to in the waiting area had been waiting for an hour. As we were in Honolulu for less than 24 hours, we didn't have much time to burn. Fortunately, Dollar was right next door so I walked over and got us a car that was immediately available and at a cheaper rate! We cancelled the reservation and the guy was shocked that we wanted to. Well we've been waiting 50 minutes to be half way through the line to get our car. Every kiosk is broken. Most people outside said they've been waiting close to two hours and a lot of people are calling the airport because they are going to miss their flight. So we will never rent from them again. Arrived to Maui, loved the trip on Hawaiian Airlines. Too bad the Thrifty Car Rentals can't get it together. Sunday about 1:00 pm. Estimating 100+ people in line, way more than that in families waiting around outside. Gauging the line it will be another two hours before we are out of here. Plenty of time to write a review. Aren't car rental companies supposed to be good at logistics? It's gonna be a long hot summer for Thrifty. Never again for us. Saw lots of Avis and Enterprise shuttles around.
