This Valentine's Day I took my husband on an axe-ellent adventure! It wasn't long ago when archery was a thing (prior to Hunger Games making it popular) and soon after came the escape rooms (don't think the Walking Dead didn't play into this concept). I think I hit the bullseye this year, literally and figuratively. The price for two people on Valentine's Day was $50. It came with free candy and music of your choice for your one hour session. We were both provided semi shared lanes, where we discovered the pros and cons of four different types of axes. The owners Negar and Faz were welcoming, shared about their business and provided demonstrations for learning. In addition, Faz did a great job teaching my husband an overhead throw with a large axe and Negar taught me an underhanded method with a tactical axe which proved beneficial. Who knew of the many options. In the end, we had some fun, learned a thing or two and we were able to hit the mark almost every time (after a solid warm up). So. Much. Fun. My friends and I happened upon this business while wandering the Gaslamp district and we had so much fun throwing axes for an hour! They were able to accommodate a walk in and are really taking covid19 precautions seriously! We watched Kaz disinfecting the throwing alleys while we got checked in. Everyone was wearing masks and there was hand sanitizer stations readily available. Kaz demonstrated how to throw 2 types of axes and a shovel head, and walked the group through fun game options. I was so happy to see this place was open again (saw on Instagram) & immediately booked an appointment. Aftet a couple months of being isolated = the need to throw something sharp at something instead of someone ;) When we walked in, we were the only ones in that time slot; the whole place has been redecorated with super cool new murals, decor and games. The owners greeted us with big smiles and like old friends chatted with us about all their new changes & reassured us about the extra measures they took for sanitizing all of the axes & areas. (I'm sure being closed super sucked for their small business so they were taking no chances!) We've been here a few times before & honestly we've watched them wipe down an area with sanitizing wipes after a group is done so it's nothing new to see. The only main difference now was we were all wearing masks now. Experience was still so fun! Took a little practice to get the hang of it again; the hubby is a shovel thrower--yes a shovel--who knew they could be such a handy little weapon too? My fave is the tomahawk and after a dozen or so practice throws, I was hitting the targets again one handed. You have GOTTA GO HERE! I've been wanting to go axe throwing for quite a while now since I tried it years ago overseas. Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised by my boyfriend for my birthday and wound up out front of this awesome establishment. I actually jumped up and down when I realized this is what we were doing. We were greeted by a nice guy who checked IDs and had us sign a waiver and checked us in. We were at Throw It in the middle of the afternoon so we were the only two axe throwing which was cool. We got private instruction from him and the owner. They were super helpful and both really good with both axes, the tomahawk, and the shovel...yes, you read that correctly: shovel. I had no idea that a shovel could be aimed, thrown, and sunk into a 2x4. I won't even lie, I was not good at first. Had to stick with the two-handed throws only and had to figure out the right amount of strength to get the proper rotation. Took many, many, many terrible clunk-clang-thud throws to get it right and only worked when I used the regular long-handled axe. The owner showed us the bent knee throw to get more power behind your throw (yeah, she was really darn good!) but I had to stick with stepping into my throws and my throws were way more accurate. Once I got the knack , I hit the bullseye frequently. Throw It has a binder with a bunch of cool games to play. I don't remember the name of the one we played but you started with 30 points and deducted from the number of the ring you landed on. There were extra points for hitting the kill shot which neither of us did. I one game one and he won game two so we will be going back so because there is a win I must get! We did the hour session which was $30/pp but I got some sort of discount because I mentioned it was my birthday. (They did verify that with my ID.) I can absolutely feel all that physical exertion today and it was so worth it. Only thing missing was a water source. I was super thirsty after destroying all of those boards with my mighty axe. HA! There was a fridge with energy drinks which I don't drink and some various sodas. Not sure if they were purchase. Didn't see a sign and forgot to ask. Yeah, I see a return trip to Throw It in my near future...this weekend. read more

We went here on 08/29/2020 and felt very safe due to their COVID-19 policies and procedures. First, you schedule online a date, time, and indicate your party size. I recommend signing the liability waiver beforehand to make it easier to check-in for your appointment. Once we got to the place, we had a gift card and redeemed it at the location with no problems. As part of their safety procedures, we had to wear our masks at all times, the axes were sprayed with disinfectants, and we had two lanes to ourselves for social distancing. The staff also gives you tips, tricks, and techniques beforehand so you know how you should be throwing the axe as opposed to just flinging it aimlessly. It's $30 for an hour and it's worth what you pay for. I'm from LA and I would definitely make the drive back to Gaslamp/SD to do this again. read more

We were looking for a group bonding activity for our wedding party and their plus ones and came across axe throwing. The women we spoke to over the phone was very easy to work with. They accommodated our request to start at 11 am even though they do not open until 12 pm. We made reservations for a group of 20 but ended up with 15 for the actual count. We had to prepay for everything upfront but would be refunded any difference the day of. There was a minimum requirement of 15 for them to open earlier than 11 am. Our wedding party had a blast. We were the only ones there so they allowed us to use all their lanes. We spent some time practicing then went into competition mode with teams of two. There is a variety of different games they will show you to play. There are also other activists in the establishment you can play with such as an arcade machine and a giant Jenga puzzle. There's also a photo booth with props. Overall, we accomplished our goal of having our wedding party group bond before the wedding over this unique one hour activity. Tips: Complete the waiver online before you go in. It will help save a lot of time. It might just be for large parties but they said we can bring our own alcohol in.
