Had something similar to a Southwest Omelet that was just okay. It had more potatoes in it than anything else. Also had a pancake that was doughy tasting and was told that's the way they make their's. Who wants a pancake that taste like uncooked dough :( Restaurant was comfortable and clean. read more

I moved here from La & I've been to several restaurants in Atlanta but I must say this was one of my best dinning experiences yet!!! My friend Steven Addams goes all the time. The entire staff was friendly & it gave a home feel to it. The wait time to be seated was short & if you pay attention you may see a celebrity or two enjoying their meal. The food by far was fantastic & I had to send compliments to the chef for the best catch fish I've had in a very long time. The restaurant is small but the experience is big. We came to Thumbs Up Diner unintentionally and it did not disappoint. Before I get into the specifics, let me just highlight the fact that the service here was remarkable. We got in, we placed our order, and got our food almost 7 minutes later. We're talking meals here. Now that's pretty amazing. Alright, now back to the main topic here: food. My husband and I came here for breakfast. I had the Greek Scrambled eggs and it consisted of spinach, feta cheese, onions, and olives with a side of rye toast. Exactly what I was looking for. Kept me full and satisfied! Now that's what we want, don't we? I honestly don't remember the name of my husband's dish, but it had eggs, probably potatoes, and turkey bacon. Now lets get to the fun part. Pancakes. Who doesn't like pancakes? The pancakes here were SO good. We think it has to do with the maple syrup. I don't know, it's just that you don't get to taste a pancake this good everywhere. It was simple, sweet but not too sweet, gentle on the taste buds, and very tender to the soul. My fiancé and I were looking for lots of coffee and a filling breakfast before the Cowboys Falcons game, and Thumbs Up Diner delivered just that. It had a very friendly feel, and you could tell it was a popular spot with the locals. I started with the Lou's Coffee, which is coffee mixed with hot chocolate and covered with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. It was delicious and fulfilled my caffeine needs. I built my own breakfast and chose a blueberry pancake, chicken tenders, and grits. The blueberry pancake was AMAZING. It was sweet, fluffy, and filled with a good amount of blueberries. The chicken tenders were smaller like chicken bites and had a Cajun tasting breading. The grits were good and a hefty portion. My fiancé had the low country skillet and thought it was very good.. I ordered ahead to-go, the shrimp and grits were good as usual and the food was ready when I got there. Everyone including staff wears a mask and Just FYI they only take cash so be prepared for that or you can use the expensive ATM inside. So I went back to Atlanta, a good 15 lbs. fatter because of my last ATL trip. This time, I vowed not to eat myself into a coma/new pants size. And we walked into the Thumbs Up Diner (awesome name, by the way), and I asked myself, what should I order? What will definitely not be so much food that I will be in actual agony for hours after eating? So I ordered "The Heap." Because that sounded like a small portion of health food. The Heap consists of a skillet filled with their spuds (homefries, essentially), topped with jack cheese, two eggs (overeasy, in my case), and basically anything else you want to add on for a nominal fee. Toast* on the side. Since I was going healthy, I got the grilled veggies and turkey bacon. This is an tremendous, greasy, wonderful portion of food. To avoid heartburn, I doused it in Texas Pete hot sauce to the point that I finished the bottle, and the waiter brought me a new one. I ate until I was in physical pain (about 4/5 of this enormous heap), at which point I was forced to barricade myself from the skillet with all the condiments on the table, to keep me from eating any more. __________ *Instead of those little plastic packets of grape jelly and orange marmalade, here they provide jars of apple butter and fresh jam. Great food. The veggie skillet was amazing. The "build your own breakfast" is fantastic because you can order whatever you want and just add it all up; you don't get more food than you need, or you can have as much as you want because you get to build it just the way you want it. The veggie/potato skillet (we paid extra to add the sautéed veggies) was so so fresh, crunchy, flavorful. I will certainly come back for it. The coffee was delicious. Simple, and neither bitter or acidic. Our server seemed a bit flustered and overwhelmed by all her tables. We were an easy group (only 3 of us, and simple orders), but she still struggled to bring us waters and refill our coffees. The food was delicious as was the coffee. Though the restaurant was full, the wait for a table was brief (we were seated within minutes of getting there). The food flows! The other servers were really nice and accommodating. Everyone was working really hard. The bathroom was clean and well maintained. There is free parking around back. And a cute little waiting area with benches. THUMBS UP INDEED! What a great gem to find in the heart of edgewood. Parking can be tight in this little community, but it's all worth the experience. This location is rather small, then again I haven't tried the others to discover a difference. Our wait time was about 15-20 minutes. Our server was pleasant, prompt and enthusiastic. Our meal was delivered to the table piping hot and in HUGE portions. You can easily share items like pancakes, waffles, grits, eggs, but NOT the delicious bacon( non-negotiable sharing). I love the food and the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's a nicely-sized space - not too big, not too small. The staff is polite and efficient, and in the many times I've eaten here, I've never wondered what was taking my food so long. I only eat pancakes and bacon at this restaurant, and I've never been disappointed. I don't know what batter they use for those buttermilk pancakes but GOD they are friggin' delicious, and who can go wrong with perfectly crisped bacon. I gave Thumbs Up three stars because they have a seating policy that as a single person I find offensive. I usually go to Thumbs Up with a friend or two, but one weekday morning last month I wasn't working and decided to get some pancakes and bacon. I don't like the counter seating because it's too tight to sit comfortably, and I don't like those stools with my bum hanging over the sides and no support for my back. So I decided to wait for a table. And I waited, and waited and waited while couples and groups of three got seated before me but came in AFTER me. When I asked the hostess she said it was because she was waiting for a one-top - a small table that sat only two people. So I waited an extra 20 minutes for a table and frankly, my pancakes didn't taste as good as they usually did. Because of this policy, I won't ever go to Thumbs Up alone again, and although I love the food, I'm uncomfortable patronizing a restaurant that punishes me because I don't have a companion. In summary, the food is great, but be sure to take a friend (or be okay with a stool up your bum)! read more

We Finally decided to try thumbs up diner. The waiting time wasn't too bad. They have a small couch for a waiting area inside and a couple benches for outside. Parking was not a problem they have a small parking lot and they are parking on the street available every corner. They have signs everywhere in front of the restaurant and where you signed your name (CASH ONLY !!!) they have an ATM Machine in the back the charge I believe $2.50 . A little bit of a wait, and they only take cash are pretty much my only faults with this place. And I wouldn't fault the cash only part of the business if the ATM didn't charge $3. I went with a group of 5, they are pretty serious about having your whole party there to be seated. We had a 20 minute wait, which isn't too bad, and the benches outside are pretty nice. My counterparts in this adventure were much more hungry than me, they were ordering huge skillets(heap) with potatoes, bacon, and such. Others were ordering Omelets with all kinds of goodies in them. I just went for the veggie bagel and smoked salmon. It was all I could have ever wanted at that time and place. A nice tasty bagel, sprouts, veggies, and a lovely spread. All that with the smoked salmon on top, really hit the spot. A glass of OJ on the side and I was ready for the day. My friends however looked like they all needed a nap after gorging themselves in their huge plates of food. They definitely need a place like this in California! I had REAL southern food for the first time this past June when I was in ATL for a friend's birthday. The closet thing we had here in the Bay Area was Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles - but even that closed down! =( I never had grits before (can you believe it? what can I say, I'm a Cali girl) and nothing says the south like grits. I ordered fried catfish w/ a side of the grits and an over medium egg. Oh, and you can't forget the sweet tea. Who thought catfish would be so good for brunch? I'll be back for more...
