Went with a group of ten. We thought it was weird that we were almost the only patrons in the restaurant at 8 on a Saturday night. However, the place was beautiful and everyone really enjoyed their meals. Our service kinda sucked. It seemed like the server either didn't want to be there or didn't want to serve us. He mostly just took our order and dropped the food off. That kind of service is fine for McDonald's, but not a place like Thunder Bay. I would still definitely recommend it as one of the best places in the QC area. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Update: I was happy to see that management had contacted me to apologize for my experience and address this issue. They have assured me that there will be additional training to improve service. Good food, great atmosphere. Took my fiancee out for her birthday dinner and had a great time. We both love the outdoors so the feel of this place fits in great with us. Waited 55 min. To be seated, and not because they were full, but because the kitchen was slow. First attempt to get seated, they tried to seat us in a booth when we asked for a table. Embarrassing when your larger and asked for a table. Put back into the lobby to wait more. Ordered finally, steak burnt. No dressing on the salad (duh), wrong potatoes that were ordered. My husband and I had dinner at Thunder Bay last week. Our food was very good and our waiter, I'm thinking his name might have been Gary or Barry, was very good and attentive. I really want to like this place. The atmosphere is great. Both times I have taken my family the service has been terrible. The first time the food was good. The second time was tonight. We made reservations for 6 for our Dress up Christmas dinner. It was embarrassing, the service was terrible and the food was mediocre at best. All around terrible. Where do we start? There were two other tables in the restaurant but some how our food took forever. The goat cheese small plate consisted of two pieces which were alright but were fairly cold. The service was lousy. The server brought the wrong salad out and also messed up our entrée. My boyfriend ordered the drunken sirloin tips which had tough meat with basically onion skins and a small amount of mushrooms. Where do I begin? I was not thrilled with my experience at TBG. To start off I would like to address the demeanor in which our waiter interacted with us. We waited fifteen minutes to receive our beverages. We all received different menus, which limited our horizon of food options. When I tried to order off the so called "dinner menu" the waiter rudely informed me that I could not order certain items. Why give us a menu and then upon us ordering decline our request? Furthermore after my friend placed his order the waiter replied snobbishly "is that all big guy". I was awestruck, I could not believe the unprofessionalism and blatant disrespect displayed by this so called server. We politely disregarded his demeaning comment, and went on with our meal. Which was sub par at this point to say least. Keep in mind this was not my first experience here at TBG, but I'm sad to say it may be my last. Now on to the appetizers; It started off promisingly with the four cheese stuffed mushroom caps, while worst than in years past in terms of texture and consistency. The seafood fondue did not have a good consistency, some of the seafood was cold. I had to send it back. Now here is where the meal went from average to an absolute nightmare. I ordered the doppelback steak medium rare seeing as the waiter refused to serve me the ribeye because it was not on the menu. Wow, I couldn't have made a worse decision! The doppelback was cold, well done, and relatively dry. I even had to put some elbow grease into cutting it. I pointed out to the waiter that it was in fact not medium rare, but well done. He insisted that I was wrong, and that I was illy educated on the subject. I find it outrageous that a server can tell you that your steak is cooked to your specification when the coloring was almost entirely brown. My companion who came to visit in Iowa City was even worse off than I. I talked up TBG based upon previous experiences and insured that it was worth that we make the hour long expedition to TBG. My companion ordered the doppelback (misteak), which like mine was not cooked to specifications. He also ordered the pepperoni flatbread. The flatbread was thrown down on the table with the utmost disrespect. My friend said that the pepperoni was equivalent to that of a gas station quality. On to his duck sliders, they were dry, had very little flavor, and probably could have found a better home at whitecastle. An atrocity when dealing with a delicacy such as duck. Overall we give this experience with Thunder Bay 2 stars. While lackluster at best the prices were not that unreasonable. Some recommendations for the establishment: - pay more attention to the food you're cooking for example the temperature and consistency - hire new staff - treat your customers with more respect And last but not least remove the doppelback (misteak) from the menu. They have a decent brunch - I wouldn't say that it is AMAZING, but it's one of the better ones in the area. The service is good, and the atmosphere is interesting. Management worked with us to properly reserve and set up our group of 50 in the party room. The waitstaff was attentive and courteous, and the buffet was plentiful and tasty. Came here in a panic for healthy, tasty food to-go and found it! The chef and each staff memeber was very helpful and efficient; they helped me pull off a quick order with ease. Flatbreads were thin, crispy and tasty. Bourbon steak appetizer had great flavor, nice and tendor. The edamame chicken salad was a favorite as well. Highly recommened for food and service! read more

Went there for Valentine's Day with 7:30pm reservations. The restaurant was clearly unprepared for the amount of patrons they had that night. We went to the bar and had watered-down drinks until 7:50pm, and this was AFTER I had to remind the desk staff that we were still waiting. Then we get taken to a booth with a wobbly, clearly defective table in desperate need of replacement. After switching tables, we finally order at 8:10pm. Needless to say, we don't see our food for another 50 min.! When it finally does come, the well-done ribeye I ordered comes bloody and rare, with the sorriest excuse for pre-frozen, claw crabmeat I've ever seen. Moreover, the macaroni & cheese I ordered didn't come out with the entree. After sending the ribeye back, I finally get to eat dinner at 9:15pm. The steak well-done but gristly and bland. The macaroni & cheese was an overdone, refrigerated and then microwaved tragedy. I finally give up ask for the check. Our very lovely waitress apologized profusely but the damage had been done. As a subsequent remedial measure, she threw in a piece of prime rib for me to take home. By 9:30 we're on our way home after the most horrific 30 minutes of actual dining time I've ever experienced. Mind you, this is the SECOND time I've had to wait over an hour to get served at Thunder Bay. There won't be a third. If a half-star was an option, I'd use that. read more

Horrible...in fact, a trip through the McDonald'd Drive Thru was necessary afterwards. We were there for a late lunch on a weekday. It appeared as though we were the only table in the place. So one would think our food would arrive fairly quickly...not so much. Our group of four ordered two fish tacos and the bacon mac and cheese to start. The fish tacos came out five minutes apart and were horrible. Greasy, very "fishy" tasting fish that was overcooked (meaning hard on the end). The mac and cheese was decent, although it looked a little like Velveeta mac and cheese with bacon bits thrown in. After sampling the fish taco, I should have changed my order as I ordered the crispy fish wrap. It was the same greasy, over-cooked, obviously frozen fish. I could hardly detect any of the slaw that was supposed to be in my wrap as all I could taste was the fishy fish and cheese. I was anticipating a fresher wrap, versus one in which all of the wrapped ingredients are fried, baked, or cooked somehow. For a restaurant that advertises fresh seafood, I was sorely disappointed. My husband ordered a prime rib wrap, while the meat itself was fine his wrap, too appeared to be cooked, fried, or prepared in a way that left it swimming in grease. He often doesn't leave food on his plate but he was unable to eat more than a few bites of the wrap. Our friends tried the chicken salad sandwich and the shrimp and cheese fondue. The chicken salad looked very good but was flavorless. The fondue was a few pieces of frozen salad shrimp swimming in a jar of cheez whiz with some green onion on top. When I saw a "few" pieces of shrimp, I mean perhaps four total. The decor was beautiful and we were really hoping for great things, but we will not be returning. read more

Definitely a mixed bag. The place is very nice. The décor is well done, the place is clean, and staff are well trained. My prime rib sandwich and fries were tasty and hot. Disappointing was the potato soup which was too thick and gloppy for my taste. Inedible was the Crème Brulee which NOT Crème Brulee; it was noting but over-sweet vanilla pudding with some torched sugar on top. I ate maybe four bites of it and felt almost sick for an hour. read more

4th visit to TBG in about ten years. Came in for brunch (3rd brunch there). Though the place was about a third full, it took 10 minutes for a server to take our drink orders after we were seated, and another 12-15 minutes to get our drinks after that, AND he forgot to bring us silverware (we had already fixed our plates by then, and were ready to chow down.) Most of the food we had on the buffet line was nothing to write home about. I will give props to the fried chicken breasts, as they were tender and juicy with a nice flavor. They had a roast beef that was mediocre, and looked like standard fare you would find at Dynasty Buffet during lunch time. The salad bar portion of the buffet looked promising, though whatever 'white' dressing was empty for the hour or so that we were there, and emptied chaffers were slow to be restocked, except for the more "breakfasty" items. I'd have to say I'd give it one more try in the future, as I've had better experiences in the past, and I'm always looking for a good brunch spot. But it sure better do more to impress me for the pricetag on a brunch buffet, which isn't far off from some of the top places in town for a Sunday brunch. read more

i ate hear years ago when i was in town for dog shows. it turned out that i again was staying nearby for dog shows. i read sone not so great reviews on Yelp, but i enjoyed my meal so many years ago I decided to come again. Saturday night and it has been bitterly cold and snowy. the lot at 6 pm was pretty crowded. I was seated immediately and was soon visited by my server. i ordered a beer and water, which came out right away. i chose a 6 oz sirloin steak for dinner. My salad cane out right away, and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of greens...not the usual iceberg lettuce. i didn't have to wait but 10-15 minutes for my steak, which was cooked perfectly medium rare. although i did not indulge in dessert, the selection sounded yummy. Overall, a very tasty dinner, cooked right, and served quickly. My service was excellent. my only complaint, though it was relatively minor, is that the seasoning on the steak was a tad salty. Absolutely an incredible find. It's big-city dining quality in Eastern Iowa. Who would've thought! The tapas menu is incredible and everything is fresh, the presentation is first-class, the service was very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy and warm. It's an all-around winner. The vegetable tapas has a great creamy garlic dipping sauce, the tuna sushi was fresh and very good, the fries are home-made, shaped like potato chips, and tasty. You can't go wrong! read more

I was hesitant about this place- as reviews seemed mixed. It was walking distance from our hotel- Quality Inn (which was also great)- so we decided to try it. The service was friendly and prompt- the decor and ambience was warm, rustic and inviting. The menu was wonderful- lots of original choices- both small plates and full size entrees. Got the flatbread pizza- wonderful thin crust and fresh toppings. The caprese salad- again very fresh and the crawfish Rangoon- all were fabulous. I highly recommend this place. read more

I would have given 4 stars but the wine prices are outrageous. They have their Decoy Pinot which retails for $23 priced at $60. I understand doubling the price of wine at restaurants but not 3x... I love a good bison burger, and it is rare to see those on the menu. I was a little disappointed as the burger was over cooked. The parmesan crusted oysters were awesome. The oysters were huge. I like that the menu is very diverse. Next time I would order a bunch of small plates for the table as I wasn't impressed with the execution of the entrees. Small Plates are the way to go. I'm willing to give a newer waitress some slack but her attention to detail on everything from pre-meal biscuits to the bill was completely unacceptable. On top of terrible service the food was average at best and for $17+ a plate I expect better then average. The Red Snapper and Mahi Mahi had zero flavor and was over cooked. The Lobster Mac and Cheese tasted alright but the texture was grainy instead of the desired creamy. #disappointed read more

My party of four went to easter brunch had reservations at 3:45 earliest we could get and was told brunch would still be hot and stocked at this time. We were seated quickly and at bar booth had asked for flat table with chairs as I am big and handicapped. We went to buffet all the eggs were filled but cold, green beans were tuff, biscuits were great gravy was sausage in water the worst ever, go to hardees. The shrimp bowl had three shrimp and was never filled again took bowl and never replaced. The ham was dry, cheesy potatoes were good but lukewarm. You had your choice of chicken four ways none hot or tasted good. The noodles with beef burgundy sticky and cold. The prime rib was only redeeming factor of whole meal. The dessert choice of pie was 10 pieces of coconut crème only some dried out pastries. The bill was $150 with tip I would have had a considerably better meal at golden corral. I asked manager why not jambalaya or fish she said something different for easter just more dry chicken I observed not sure what was served earlier had to be better. This place is always a disappointment. One time my family went here and my wife asked for some ranch dressing for her chicken. They forgot it when they brought the food. Then, they seemed to take forever to bring it and finally had to be reminded a second time that we still needed it. Meanwhile the rest of the family were eating their meals. Then, when my wife took the bun off to add the ranch, there was a hair embedded in on top of the chicken. We quietly pointed this out to the the waitress and she acted as if we placed the hair there!! We stopped going here after that. Unfortunately, I had to experience them again last night at the Quad City Home Show VIP night. They were the caterers. They were a complete joke. They did not have enough food ready for the start of the event and did not have enough food stations which caused extremely long lines. On top of that the food was terrible. Then, the staff just seemed rude and you could tell they just didn't want to be there. I would suggest these people just get out of the restaurant business for their own sake. The Home Show used to be catered by Riefe's but they retired. There was never a problem with the food when they were the caterers. read more
