I never tried Thunder Burger & Bar before, despite walking past multiple times. Although the food was good overall, the service was not. We ordered calamari, jerk shrimp, sliders, and a crab cake sandwich. The shrimp came out blue and were not cooked throughout. We sent the shrimp back and a staff member said they were making a new order and would take this off the bill. The shrimp didn't come out until we were almost done eating and we already told the server that if they weren't remaking the shrimp to just forget the order. When the bill arrived, the shrimp were on the bill. After speaking with the server and a manger, the shrimp were taken off the bill. For something simple, with an easy fix, it took a lot of time and explanation to rectify the situation. Went there this afternoon, got seated at 2:50--were given our menus, and our waiter came over. Then we tried to order with the waiter. We couldn't, because their brunch was over--but the dinner menu didn't start until 3PM (keep in mind, the restaurant was open and seating people). If they had either not sat us, or told us that there'd be this delay when we sat down, that'd be one thing, but they didn't and so we left, and grabbed food somewhere else. Either their system needs updating, they need to delay seating when doing the swaps, or their manager needs to do his job and let his wait staff serve the guests. read more

Thunder Burger & Bar is a cool concept -- the focus is on burgers of all kinds, including some really weird ones on Wednesdays (think kangaroo, caribou, and I think shark once?). The atmosphere is fun with the punk rock style they have going on - we sat in the back room (which the waiter said they call "the library") where they have grass on the walls and funky chairs with spikes on them (that they have throughout the restaurant). But enough about the decorations... The food is pretty good, but also expensive for what you get. When you sit down, they bring pickles to the table - although I'm not normally a huge fan, these were flavored pretty well and a nice, unique start to the meal. We then got a mixed green salad ($6) with the roasted red pepper ranch dressing. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture, but I was shocked by how big it was, and very happy that we had decided to split it. The salad was much better than I expected at a burger place - if I went back, I'd probably try to split both the salad and the burger. I got the regular Thunder Burger which starts at $12 (a little pricey in my opinion). I added on a bunch of the free toppings, like tomatoes, lettuce, roasted red peppers, grilled red onion, sauteed mushrooms, and pepperjack cheese for $1. I also substituted the sweet potato fries for $2 extra. All in all, I felt like $15 was a lot to pay for what I got even though I did enjoy it. The burger was very nicely cooked and flavored - there's a lot of grease so it was hard to manage at times (my boyfriend ended up cutting up his to eat it). The roasted red peppers were a good edition, but I'd get regular onions next time - didn't like the grilled red onion. The fries were very good, but a little too salty. We got some of the free sauces to dip the fries in, which was definitely a good idea - the ginger aioli and the ancho mayo, especially. The service we had was good - very attentive and friendly. The one thing I never understand is why restaurants always look at you like you have two heads when you say you don't have a reservation and then seat you right away in a section with plenty of open tables. I was spending yet another cold afternoon in Georgetown (buying Christmas presents) and I stumbled into Thunder Burger. Let me just say, the interior is quite amazing. There's a feel of an old bar from the 1800's or so, that's been modernized to an extent. Even the bathrooms are quite interesting - with walls covered in shrubbery. It was kind of like Get Him to the Greek's furry wall - but leafy. Alright, enough babbling about the awesomely strange interiors - get to the food. I kept it simple with a Buffalo Stomp burger... really any burger with bleu cheese and bacon typically calls me... although I was equally tempted by the elk burger. Anyways, it was darn good. I really do like the whole trend of gourmet burgers... and this place definitely lives up to the hype. Once again, another place I'll be returning to upon future visits to DC. read more

The theme of this review will be "it was just ok". I was craving burgers so I looked up this place on Yelp. Menu seemed interesting and varied. Was just ok, I think some of the positive reviews are a little (read as: extremely) overzealous. I had the South of the border burger, exchanged the pico de gallon for pineapple salsa. Salsa wasn't that great (had extremely large pineapple chunks and lacked spice). The burger itself was ok, I had mine well done (I know, don't judge me) and it lacked oomph. It wasn't dry and wasn't tiny but seemed to lack seasoning, I expected a bit more from such an expensive burger...even the chilli on it seemed to be under seasoned. My boyfriend had the Born to be Wild medium. He said it was just ok...the burgers were filling though, that's good. I got sweet potato fries with my order and they were cold which was a little disappointing. I did enjoy my key lime pie dessert (might have been a little tipsy at that point) At first I thought the service was going to be a problem since server was a little short with me in the beginning but the service ended up being the best thing about my visit. She was quite attentive, drinks came out very quickly (I had the apricot margarita which was pretty good, I do not recommend the sangria) and we were not left waiting for long periods of time...even in picking up the check. As far as ambience, a little dark but I suppose that goes with their theme. Was a bit more cramped than I would like and the low ceilings did not help with that feeling. It hurts me to give them even 3 stars because I hate the ed hardy aesthetic with a deep and abiding passion but it was a solid burger all around. We ended up here by reading Yelp reviews. The restaurant itself is cool with lots of exposed brick. It could have had more air conditioning though! They have a pretty big menu with a selection of brunch drinks (bloody Mary, Bellini, mojito, Kir royale) for $6. They have lots of burgers plus make your own. I got one with brie and caramelized onions on top. Really tasty! They charge $2 extra for sweet potato fries-I was feeling cheap and didn't do it but wish I had. Service was spot on even though the place got busy fast. There are a variety of burgers available here including game meats. I tried the elk burger, which came out slightly undercooked (I ordered medium and it was red, not pink). I recently visited Thunder Bar with a friend while we were running after-work errands in DC. We were initially drawn-in by the Happy Hour menu, as well as the open-air venue since it was a beautiful-weather evening. We each ordered their Pomegranate Margarita's (HH Special) as well as some "Bites" - specifically the Spinach Dip and Cheese Quesadilla. The drinks and food were delivered promptly after ordering, and were all fresh/good tasting. It was $6 for each drink and $5 per "bite" so this nosh was easy on the wallet! The service was pretty good, however, since the Happy Hour pricing is only available at the bar and a select few bar tables (we sat at the adjacent high tops), the service was a bit lacking when we wanted to cash out. After the initial round of food and drinks were dropped off, we were not asked again if we wanted to order more items. This was OK because we really did not want more, however, it would have been nice to get an additional "check up" before we left. You'll be able to select one for an additional charge #welcometogeorgetown. The salad was definitely large enough for a meal. The jerk chicken had about six on a skewer, tasty but not worth an extra $8. -Thunder Burger- $9.95: Customized and typically cooked with pink in the middle. Typical burger, nothing extremely special- Safe bet. -Impossible Burger- $13.95: The impossible Burger is a market sold fake meat burger made from plant protein. Typically this burger is thicker than it was at Thunder so I assume it's pressed hard on a flat top for some crispyness. It's a good burger but too expensive. Our lunch came to $60 (without tip) which is not too crazy for Georgetown but we only had three meals. I don't think this is a place I would suggest to come back to. Was walking around Georgetown and decided to drop in and give this place a try. My daughter and wife each had a different kind of salad which they both seemed to enjoy. I myself decided on eggs Benedict and that wasn't very good. The water they used to cook the egg had way to much vinegar in it so all I tasted was vinegar eggs. The piece of Canadian Bacon that is typical of this dish was nothing more than a slice of cold cut ham. The breakfast potatoes they served with it were clearly frozen and not home made "home fries" like I was expecting. Like I said two dishes out of three were decent but my egg dish was a bummer. The burger though...not good. You can order lots of sides but they just weren't great, plain and sometimes bitter. I mean, overall, we came for the burger and it just was subpar. Yes, this is my kind of place. Tucked away yet stands out like a shining star. I loved the selection of beer along with the creative dishes all around from appetizer to entree. The entire dining area is pretty tiny but cozy none the less. Our wait staff was completely on point and couldn't have asked for better. I absolutely love this area (Georgetown) and this place is a great addition to that neighborhood. I ate here last night after seeing a movie with a friend. It was a Monday night so a lot of restaurants in the area had closed early. One reviewer described the interior as "Ed Hardy" I don't exactly know what that means, to me I get more of a funky Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole vibe. Having worked in the restaurant industry for years service is V-E-R-Y important to me! With that being said our server was an absolute sweetheart who was so patient with us, especially since we spent about ten minutes catching up with each other before ordering. My friend and I decided to split the "Buffalo Stomp" burger (Bison Burger, Wrapped In Bacon, Topped With Gorgonzola Blue Cheese, Grilled Onions, Tomato & Remoulade) with fries. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium & the toppings all paired perfectly with each other. My only complaint is that I didn't really see the bacon that was wrapped around the burger, but considering the amount of bacon I'm used to consuming it might have been hidden in there. Juicy burgers. Came in with party of six. My daughter and three friends. Everyone ordered burgers of which the place is named and famous for. We got here during happy hour so we started with the $5 "bites" and half priced draughts for the adults The edamummus, half edamame and half hummus could be a nice cheap meal unto itself. Carrots celery cucumber chips and pita surrounding a bowl of mushed edamame. We also go fried mushrooms which, while not as health, were well received by my daughter's friends. The burgers all came out quickly and presented beautifully. There is no elegant way to eat a thunder burger though. They are big and very very juicy. They are as good as they are expensive at $15 a piece plus a dollar for cheese or $2 to substitute the fries which in my case was a big house salad and well worth it. My tip however is get the sliders during happy hour for $5 for two and give those to your teens. This group i was with were not hungry and much of the burgers got bagged or trashed. What we did bring home should feed us for another meal. I'm saying 3 stars because of the cost. But it is G'town. read more

Stop by from 5-7pm if you're looking for happy hour drink and food specials. One of those specials include the spinach and artichoke dip, nothing extraordinary here but delicious and only$5.00. I also enjoyed a huge plate of nachos, which are covered in house made tenderloin tip chili!! Though not particularly expensive, for college students the prices are above average, but definitely worth it. I get the Ventura Highway often and it is delicious. The Sweet Potato fries are also amazing and highly recommended. My friend got the Learning to Fly and absolutely loved it as well. Sat at the bar and had a beer while I ordered some food for take-out. Place was fairly busy. The bartender was friendly. I ordered up a local IPA and it was not what I was expecting, so I believe the tap lines were mixed up. It was more of a wild ale, but enjoyable and made no fuss. It was wet and during happy hour, so just $5. Ordered the falafel burger, which was tasty but as a full patty (quite large), it was a bit boring as far as taste is concerned. Probably better as sliders. Also ordered the Elk sausage special (link and cabbage slaw for $6) and it was delicious. I'll be sure to order up an actual burger the next time I visit.
