One late Saturday evening, I was in a burger mood. Not just that, I wanted a good burger and from somewhere new. I recalled Susan H.'s review of Thunder Burger & Bar, which is located in the Georgetown section of DC. Now, I'm not a fan of Georgetown due to the lack of parking, distance, pretentious attitudes and general douchiness. However, Susan's tastes seem similar to mine (aka great taste) so I ignored all of my reservations and made the trek out there.
Color me surprised. Thunder Burger has an interesting décor. It's very tavern-ish with some color patterns mixed in. The playlist is quite eclectic, especially given its location, and kinda catchy. It actually fits very well with the laid back environment. Speaking of laid back, that would describe the staff, who are also pretty friendly. The bartender doubled as our waitress and she did a great job accommodating us.
My only qualm would be that the host/hostess isn't always around, which makes things a little confusing for new customers who have to decide between awkwardly waiting at the host stand or finding their own seat.
The menu has a nice variety of interesting options. We ordered the Grilled Buffalo Wings, Beef Sliders, "Love Me Tender" burger and the Guinness Chocolate Cake.
The Grilled Buffalo Wings are grilled, then flash fried and can be made with a mild or hot sauce. They come with a side of celery, carrots and blue cheese. The appetizer dish comes in a portion size of 6 meaty wings. The wings were properly cooked as the meat was tender and juicy. The wing sauce was really flavorful with some sweetness, tang and a noticeable kick. Their hot sauce is no joke and may require a fire extinguisher for some folks. Definitely some of the best wings I've had in the DC area.
The Beef Sliders come in a set of 3 really small burgers (small even for sliders). They're served on a mini sesame challah bun along with American cheese, remoulade and a cornichon (mini pickled cucumber). The sliders are pretty depressing, The bread to meat ratio was disproportionate. The patty was dry and the condiments were scarce. Also, I wasn't a fan of the cornichon. A dill pickle spear would have been a much better option, especially to provide some more sourness and acidity.
The "Love Me Tender" Burger consists of Kobe beef patty, Tillamook aged white cheddar, tomato and remoulade. I also added lettuce and ancho mayo. The patty was not only of high quality, it was smoky, tender and juicy. I think that the chefs could have used a little more seasoning to coax some more flavor from the patty but I'm probably splitting hairs. The cheddar was an excellent compliment to the patty as it provided an assertive flavor. The condiments as a whole worked well with the patty but were also a little heavy handed. Overall, this was an excellent burger. Seriously, if I ever visit Kobe, Japan, I need to find the farmer who raised this cow and thank him for his efforts.
The French fries were an afterthought. They were on the thick side and reminds me of Burger King fries. I thought they were ok but unspectacular. A little more seasoning would go a long way.
The Guinness Chocolate Cake is basically cake that is topped with a Belgian chocolate whipped ganache, served cold with whipped cream. The translation is this was a glorified chocolate donut. It may have been intended to be a cake but the ganache froze over it and thus a donut was created. A really good donut though and one that is really rich, moist and intense with deep chocolate flavor. Great ending to a meal. Even better? It was free! You know what they say right? Free food tastes better.
Given the typical high prices of DC, even higher prices of being in Georgetown, and the fad of "high end burgers", I expected to be paying out the ying-yang. I mean c'mon, a basic burger here costs $12 and that's without cheese (that's extra), but I digress. Surprisingly, the bill wasn't that bad. One burger, one slider dish and a wings appetizer came to $38.
Ok, the bill was a little high but at least the food was worth it. More value here than at dozens of other spots in the city, that's for darn sure. I'd definitely return in the future. read more
