I had high hopes after such great reviews. Food and portion sizes were spot on and tasted delicious. Except for my fiancées meal. There was perhaps too much pepper in her meal making it too spicy for her so we asked to review the menu for a replacement. Ended up just getting bacon and ate a biscuit salad and fries all were great. My first coffee came nice hot and fresh. I finish that about 10-15 minutes before meals or starters came. Waitress came by 2 times and ignored the empty glass of coffee nor gave enough time for myself to announce to her I needed another. It was not until our meals came and she nearly knocked the empty mug off the table that she said she would return with the low beverages. Upon receiving the bill we were happy to not be charged for the meal we did not consume but the salad that was a $1.99 with the meal all of a sudden turned into a $5 salad making it not worth the price. And found out how much the 2 cups of coffee were and suddenly that's not so worth it on two cups (3 total combined fiancée and I ) Our observations are a sad sign of the times that no one truely seems to think about anyone but themselves even in an industry where service is the only thing keeping them in business. We are a family of 4 that made a leisurely first meal at thunderbirds and it will also be our last. The food was delicious. My whole family was satisfied. My daughter ordered French toast and received a huge plate of fresh made bread French toast. The BLT was also on homemade bread with a side of pimento cheese. The price was so reasonable and we've decided we will return tomorrow. Here's the Scoop: went for breakfast yesterday because of the rave reviews from Elites. It's a small cafe that holds about 40 people. The seating is arranged in booths, counter and tables. Upon entering there's a small lobby seating area. No outdoor seating eventhough there was room on the property. The bathroom was clean with about 3 stalls. The atmosphere is that of an old diner. The menu has breakfast lunch and dinner entrees. They are known for their shrimp and grits. (See pics) the shrimp and grits platter was medium in size. My order was small. I ordered the fried catfish, grits and collards. The Fish was seasoned okay but it looked like one piece of catfish cut into 3's. I was not happy. The grits were creamy which was good no lumps and the collards were ok not tough. Amy our waitress was very friendly and gave us good service. After our meal we decided to get dessert. I ordered the stuffed cheesecake and my husband ordered the peach/ blackberry crisp with vanilla ice cream. It was ok, nothing to write home about. Would I come here again maybe before we leave for lunch. I give them 4 stars for the Shrimp & grits and service, otherwise there's lots of room for improvement on portion size, just sayin we are in the South. This place is surprisingly good! Very unassuming roadside diner, but the food is incredible. Their meatloaf is my favorite comfort food - perfect right before a nap! After every hike in the area I reward myself with the amazing Thunderbird bacon cheeseburger. Perfect crispness on the roll and cooked to juicy perfection. Get it medium rare! The only suggestion I have for this place is to extemd hours. 24 hours would be nice but at least late nights on the weekends. read more

My Boyfriend and I made the short drive out to McGaheysville on Sunday (PAST all the 'chain restaurants') and arrived @ The Tbird around noon. We waited LESS that 30 seconds at the door and were told to have a seat anywhere we wanted. We chose a booth 'close to the action' near the counter. Our server, Nicole (Nikki?) came right over and offered to get us beverages. We chose to each get a Bloody Mary, as we think of ourselves as connoisseurs of all things Bloody Marys; and we were NOT disappointed! They make their mix in-house and have Smirnoff on the rail! It was the perfect combo of spicy, citrus and tomato. We had TWO each ;) Choosing our entrees for brunch was a task, as EVERYTHING sounded good on the menu! We told Nikki we needed another minute to decide and she said "No problem, I can 'take a lap' and be right back!" We didn't feel pressured to make a decision, and just like she said, she came right back and took our order stating, "Great choices! I wish I could sit down and eat with you!" None of the waitstaff seemed "in the weeds" and the ambiance of the place was laid-back and very friendly. We felt very welcome, and without the normal "canned" speeches: "Hi my name is _____, and I will be your waitress" that I find completely annoying. I chose the country ham plate (with 2 free-range farm-fresh eggs) and he had the same, but with bacon. Both came with a side of the red potato hash, I got mine without the peppers and onions. AND, Since we love everything PORK, we also ordered a side of sausage, just because, well, we LOVE pork. For a bit of sweet, we asked to share a side of the Cream cheese blueberry french toast. (How could this EVER be passed on?!) I am NOT lying when I say EVERYTHING was wonderful, right down to the freshly-baked buttermilk biscuit. It was clear that the menu was carefully thought out, with a "country-cookin'" theme, but fine-tuned by a talented chef, and prepared with care. Another wonderful thing is that they use all local ingredients, supporting local farmers and businesses, which I admire! On our way out, we stopped in the restrooms and found them clean, stocked, and well-maintained, respectively. This says a lot about the owners and management. A dirty or smelly bathroom can ruin even the BEST restaurant experience for me. I cannot say enough nice things about this place! And, I am one of those "hard-to-please" guests, especially when it comes to service. My water glass stayed full, my brunch hit the spot, and I would drive the few extra miles next time I want a GOOD Bloody Mary. I can't wait to go back and try their $4.99 blue plate lunch specials (I eyed the open-faced turkey sandwich with home-made mashed potatoes!) for lunch sometime in the very near future. read more

As a condo owner at massanutten resort, finding near by restaurant choices has been a challenge. Not thrilled with resort eateries, and not wanting to drive to Elkton or Harrisonburg, Thunderbird was the closest option for breakfsst. Shrimp and grits was a great brunch choice. The cooks are great, food was excellent. Prices are reasonable considering we are in Virginia. This time we all got breakfast. I had a hot chocolate with "The Mountaineer". It came with French toast, 2 eggs, bacon and redskin potatoes. All for under $10. My fiancé got blueberry short stack with cinnamon cream. My stepdaughter got the country fried steak. My stepson got cinnamon cream French toast. It was all very delicious; cannot wait to return again. Came here for the first time while on a family vacation. Ordered cheese fries, bowl of chili, patty melt, raspberry cream cheese taco pancakes (which is just raspberry cream cheese folded into a pancake like a taco and then covered with whipped cream), pulled pork pizza, and steak omelette. Pros - Breakfast is served pretty much all day. - Kid friendly. I saw kids get crayons and coloring books. - Decent space. It is mostly a diner space with booths. If you have a party of more than 6-8 people, I wouldn't recommend it. You can't hear each other. Groups shouldn't be at the counter. - Ok service, but be prepared because they don't seem to have much staff. Another reason not to come in groups. Cons - My omelette should have had more cheese. I could barely taste it. The filling in my omelette didn't really stick together, which also means the flavor didn't stand out. I used a decent amount of Chalula sauce. - The cheese fries should have had more cheese on it, too. Not all the fries were covered. - Their online menu doesn't match what's actually given out to customers at the restaurant. For example, their online menu says their cheese fries can be served with chili. That's not on the menu I was given. There was only the option of 2 types of gravy. No way. I'm not a fan of this type of discrepancy. It's misleading. - Their chili was too thin. In other words, too soupy. - The pulled pork pizza tasted like they used ketchup instead of tomato sauce. Not much cheese. - When I checked in on Yelp, I was give a coupon for 50% off pancakes. However, the limitations are M-F 2pm-6pm. Not cool! My family arrived at 6:30pm, so we couldn't use the coupon. I've mentioned this in a prior review, but if you're going to encourage your customers to use Yelp, you shouldn't have strict limitations. This place is supposed to serve breakfast all day, so what's up with that? Final Answer Not bad, but didn't stand out. Don't plan on returning. read more

So I was expecting a lot from this place. The atmosphere was great the food was pretty good. I ordered the sausage and eggs plate. The service wasn't amazing. They were attentive, but not very friendly. They were also pretty slow getting everything out. But like I said earlier the food was pretty good so it was okay. I loved this place, I think the trick is to visit when it's not too busy. We took the kids to the WAter Park for the day, and could not bear the thought of eating the subpar food within the resort. This place was perfect. It was right down the road from the PArk. We were in and out within 45 minutes. My husband and I got the burgers. They were hot and juicy. The fries were perfectly seasoned. Kids got pancakes. Everything was tasty and served hot. There were only a few diners in the joint, so my kids enjoyed sitting at the bar, while we sat at the generously proportioned booths. My husband and I were traveling through and this restaurant's sign caught our eye. So we pulled over to read reviews and look at their menu, the reviews seemed pretty good so we decided to try it for breakfast. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with potato hash and my husband ordered an omelette with portobello mushrooms, peppers and onions, and smoked gouda cheese and a side of potato hash. Once the food arrived to our table i was questioning my choice of ordering. The gravy looked watered down (super thin) and the ground up sausage looked raw. The potato hash was nothing more then quartered red potatoes with about a teaspoon of onions spooned onto the plate next to them (obviously not cooked with the potatoes) The food was not pleasing to the eye at all, but i tried it. The taste was even worse, first off everything was very VERY bland, but it also had the strange taste to it. All of the food had this same aftertaste that my husband and I can only described as a chemical taste. Like the food was all cooked in pots that were soaking in bathroom cleaner or something. After two bites we knew we had just wasted $20 and we stopped eating and asked for our check. We will NEVER go back. The wait staff was friendly, but to be honest I care much more about the taste of the food and I personally wouldn't feed this food to my dog. If you are thinking of stoping at the thunderbird dinner I would recommend you travel about 10 more minutes up the road to Harrisonburg were you will find a ton of very well known (and delicious) restaurants. read more

We have been going to Massanutten since the 70's. This year we decided to go to Thunderbird Cafe for the first time after reading the reviews on Yelp and hearing positive reviews via word of mouth. Thunderbird cafe did not disappoint! All of the food was delicious. If you like burgers, try the Philly burger. If you like sweets, try the pancake tacos. Or if you want to try something unique, try their fried chicken meal - they soak it in sweet tea! Needless to say, eating there will definitely be an annual tradition! Ps.
