This is an amazingly good little cafe. They call themselves a farm to table restaurant, and it really seems like they're committed to doing that, more so than any farm to table restaurant I've ever been to. Every dish has the name of the farm the main ingredient comes from, and they come from nearby farms. Our group of 3 showed up for lunch before heading to Starved Rock. We had a mixed greens salad with chicken, the spicy chicken sandwich and a burger. All were incredibly good. The greens were very fresh, the burger was delicious and the spicy chicken sandwich (which was my order) was not only really tasty, but huge. The gochujang seasoning really made it interesting, I've never had a chicken sandwich quite like this, and I would love to come back and have it again. The staff was friendly, the decor was nice, and the location overlooks the historic Westclox building. I can't recommend this restaurant enough! read more

Always wanted to try this resto out. Nice lunch crowd on a Saturday. Simple and unpretentious but tasteful decor. Reviewed the menu and was torned between the watermelon salad or roasted sweet plantain. Sweet plantain! I haven't seen that as an appetizer before but I love plantains. And guava? Curious how it'll be executed. Loved it! And my main dish? Intrigued how they will present longanisa which is a staple food of our culture. Curiosity took over again and I can say that my choice was a success. The dish on its own had a nice combination with the pineapple (who doesn't like pineapple, people!). No rice needed for this dish! Our server was great, gave us more information about the menu and also found out she's from jolly old England! A British in Peru, IL you say? We were traveling from Wisconsin to Missouri and made a very happy stop at Thyme Craft Kitchen! I had the smoked salmon sandwich that was lox with lemon dill cream cheese pickled onions and fresh dill and the house potatoes which were baked potatoes that were cut up and then deep-fried in soy oil and served with a garlic aïoli sauce. My husband had the roasted beet salad which he declared to be the best beet salad he ever had! Roasted beets, goat cheese, oranges, pistachios, mint, and a mint salad dressing he thought it was perfect! The ingredients were all locally sourced and the chef made them sing! Gem, gem gem! Small, unassuming, casual place churning out inventive, rockstar food using unique, farm fresh ingredients and combinations. Case in point: the green pea/mint/chick pea hummus appetizer adorned with beautiful green skinned radish wedges served along with delicious grilled flatbread. This hummus is 100% the best I've had ever - by a longshot! I could've licked the plate. Thyme's menu proudly lists impressive sourcing of farm fresh ingredients from closeby small farms and other local suppliers. For my entree, I went with the salmon sandwich. The salmon was cold smoked (think lox) and piled on a huge, soft, toasted hogie roll with schmear of herb cream cheese plus tomato and pickled onion. It was perfect! Does this have your tummy growling yet? Wait, there's more!! Sandwiches come with a side! Choices include salad or tomato, red pepper soup or some other item that I can't remember :). I got the soup. It was a delicate tangy and slightly sweet mashup with just a mere smidge (super subtle) of spicy heat. One of the best tomato soups I've had. Dipping my sandwich in there was heavenly. Their cocktail, wine and beer list is large and inventive with a ton of variety - something to please almost everyone. Finally, service was friendly, playful to go along with our moods and totally on point. In conclusion, GET YOUR HINEYS IN HERE (or get some carryout)! Thanks, Thyme! You are rockstars! What a great experience. Inside and outside seating; great music (rock 'n' roll from the '60s, '70s, '80s); good service; and AMAZING FOOD! The server explained to me everything is farm-fresh and local and that's why the menu changes frequently. I can't imagine anything on the menu is not good, based on what I had (tomato and red pepper soup and smoked salmon sandwich--pictured). I wish I was local and could try it for dinner. Looking for a place to eat on our way home from a short getaway, we found this hidden gem after some quick internet research. We came here around midday on a Sunday, when they are only open for brunch. The dining area is pretty small, but we found a table in the corner by the window. Service was prompt and courteous. Portion sizes were good and prices were reasonable. And oh man, was it tasty. I ordered the breakfast grits while my husband opted for the fried bologna & egg sandwich. His sandwich came with a side of smashed potatoes that I kept eating off his plate--they were that good. There were several brunch cocktails I would have loved to try, but given that we had to get back on the road, we decided to share a bloody mary. Thyme was an unexpected treat. Started with the pork belly appetizer. Even my wife enjoyed it - and she is normally not a fan of pork belly anything. The French wine she had was delicious. The black tea with pomegranate me was vey good to. The red curry duck was great. My lovely wife had the steak frites and that was awesome from presentation on. Very glad we happened upon this cute farm-to-table restaurant for lunch. I had the steak frites with potatoes, which was tender and cooked perfectly. Who would have thought that pineapple and blue cheese would taste sooo good on a steak? I ate half the steak before thinking to take a pic and write a review. The fried potatoes were exactly that... potatoes that were cut and thrown in a fryer (or so it seemed). They were crisp and perfectly salted. My husband had a grass fed burger which was cooked well and a perfect fit for a picky eater who didn't want to try "different" things. He enjoyed the potatoes. The attention to the finer details makes me want to return on my next drive. The drink menu was extensive, but we chose soft drinks served in frosted glasses. If there was one slight misstep, gnocchi soup that had ramps (wild leeks) and mushrooms was delicious but you could not tell that ramps were in there. Everything here was just perfect. The Mexican flare of the watermelon salad with the fresh jalapeño and mint was just delicious. The grain bowl had pineapple and candied ginger just enough to add the right spice with every bite. Grilled cheese had amazing avocado, bacon and tomato. Went there a year ago and thought we would give them a second chance. We'll much to our regret it was the same outcome. Food is great, but not great enough to make up for bad service. To be fair we had the same waitress we had last time so I can not speak for all, just her. She takes your order, drops it off then ghost. Wife had to go ask her to get off her phone to get our check. Had the Banh Mi and the Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich. Both were fantastic! (And yes, I've had Banh Mi many times in Viet Nam, so I have a reasonable idea of what a good Banh Mi is). I ordered pickup so had a couple minutes to observe the kitchen. It's obvious the Chef and the proprietor take their work seriously and put passion in each dish. I didn't experience the service but the servers both seemed friendly and providing cheerful service to the dine-in patrons. They also have tables outside. The next time in Starved Rock I'll definitely eat here (maybe every meal!). Highly recommend. And if you're staying at SR Lodge or Big Bear Resort it's just a short and lovely drive. read more

Hipster place. They have a pretty eclectic menu which immediately caught my attention and they have a bunch of craft beers and whiskeys. I myself don't get into the whole craft beer and whiskey thing but the food was pretty decent and I would go back. I was looking for a place to eat while visiting Starved Rock. I saw this place and it sounded different, so I decided to give it a try. What a gem in this area! The place is interesting, the staff is friendly and I love the ethics behind the restaurant. We started off with some cocktails. I thought the selection was different than most places and during my time there I got to try 2 different ones, the Pisco Sour and the Caipirinha. Both were excellent but the Pisco Sour was really special. I hate tomato soup, so I had reservations about the tomato/red pepper bisque but was amazed how good it was. I really enjoyed it. My group also split Crispy Potatoes that were excellent. For the main course I had Pork Belly Bahn Mi and my friend had the Grilled Cheese. Both were excellent. I took half my sandwich home for later as I wanted to try a dessert. We split the Peanut Bourbon Chocolate Pie to finish off a perfect meal and it didn't disappoint. What I really enjoyed about the pie was that it wasn't overly sweet. It was a red-letter day as Norman was there. We got to meet him after the meal. The flavors of the food really popped. Everything tasted excellent and so fresh. Can't wait to return. read more
