Stopped by Saturday morning around 8am for breakfast. Ordered a few basic items to try like the Chinese donut with soy milk, custard buns, and chive pockets. Added on some pork and shrimp dumplings. Everything was delicious. Credit card is accepted but there's a 3% fee. It's a small restaurant so only a handful of tables. The donut and soy milk were excellent and served fresh and warm. I've had better donuts but only in Asia. The soymilk was served hot in a bowl for dipping. The custards were hot and the filling creamy and hot. I liked the chive pockets the most because they have some egg and noodles in them. Great texture and easy to eat. Would definitely order them again. The dumplings are steamed so their wrapping appears almost like crystal dumplings and opaque. Filling and juicy. Perfectly flavored. read more

Was craving taiwanese breakfast and saw this place nearby! Its a small shop in the corner, simple w a good amount of tables. We got the hot soy milk and green onion pancake. Soy milk was nice and hot, super refreshing! The pancake had such good flavor, but i personally like it more flakey, this was more doughy. Overall would come back and visit again! Also known as Ethan's Snacks (next to Shanghai dim sum by HMart) A friend raved a out their fried dough stick. Went in and ordered their fried dough stick and soy milk. Delicious. The fried dough stick is crispy but soft. My dad enjoyed it too. The soy milk is served hot and unsweetened. It's sooooooo very good. I can't explain it. Addictive. We've always tried a few skewers - mushroom, tofu, chicken and pork belly. It's all sauced up and I thoroughly enjoyed them. We also tried the bean curd (the receipt said tofu jelly) and it was nice and we ate it with some rice when we got home. I've stopped by on way too many days to get a soy milk (or two) and the fried dough stick. It's a little pricey but worth it in taste. read more

Decent Chinese breakfast place in Chinatown. If you like Shanghainese or northern Chinese cuisine, you will find dishes that are common from those regions. We ordered Chinese donuts (you tiao), Dan Dan noodles, wonton soup, pork dumplings, tofu pudding (salty) and pork feet. The Chinese donuts were the best part of our meal. It's pretty hard to mess these up in general and they were fresh and delicious s our second favorite was the Dan Dan noodles. They are definitely different in taste than your usual Dan Dan noodles-- they taste more like a traditional cold Szechuan noodle but the flavor was spot on with plenty of vinegar, cilantro and peanuts. The wontons in the wonton soup were good but the soup lacked flavor. It tasted watered down. I was honestly looking forward to the salted tofu pudding because I had a go to spot for that in Chinatown but that business had to close. I was pretty disappointed, the flavor again was off and tasted mostly like soy sauce. The pig feet were pretty good- flavorful and reminds me of the ones my mom makes. The pork dumplings were pretty standard- nothing spectacular but nothing wrong about them either. I'd most likely want to come back to try more dishes but I would hope they improve their tofu pudding recipe because it's one of the least flavorful I've tried in a restaurant. read more

Thank you for the recommendation of foodie extraordinaire, Karin Jamieson, we had a satisfying Chinese breakfast in Chinatown. According to the young talent owner/chef, everything is made in-house. I'm especially impressed by the thin casing/skin of the Sauerkraut Meat Pie, probably the best I've sampled in Houston. Their Chinese Donut is less greasy than others, definitely top pick in Houston, goes excellent with the sweet Soy Milk. The owner also recommended their WonTon, which is also delicious in a milky broth. We get the Marinated Pork Feet for my father-in-law as he's a big fan. I will come back for lunch next week to try their Noodles and Dumplings. So happy to find another Northern Chinese style eatery where I can try various new dishes. read more

this is the type of place that you want to simultaneously shout about from the rooftops but also keep under wraps so your favorites never sell out when you want them! tucked in the corner by H-Mart, this hole-in-the-wall shop is also known as "Ethan's Snack Bar." Run by a mother-son duo with fantastic home-made comfort breakfast foods like tofu nao (savory bean curd) + you tiao (fried dough stick), doujiang (soy milk), rou jia mo (the "chinese hamburger), jiucai hezi (chive pies), this is the breakfast spot that I crave and was the first stop I brought our Chinese immigrant family on our whirlwind tour through Chinatown. I've only ever tried the crispy intestine skewer and it was phenomenal. If you can't tell from the whiteboard exclusively in Chinese and the fact that most people are ordering their takeout in Mandarin only, this place is the real deal. The owner is kind and patient and very involved. There are a few tables inside, though it would be tough to get a huge crowd in. There is ample parking. Everything comes out piping hot and fresh! I went back to try some different stuff! I got the chive pies and the hot, unsweetened soy milk. The chive pies were excellent. I hadn't had anything like them before; they have a pungent, almost garlicky quality to them that I very much enjoyed. The soy milk is different than American soy milk; it feels a bit richer and has a more bean-y taste. But in a good way! I couldn't stop drinking it. On a hot and humid Houston day, I just wanted a sweaty treatment by a delicious Malatang 麻辣烫. It can be vegetarian, just hold the fish balls and Spam. Not vegan possible, because of the broth. It's popular for skewers - saucy mild or dry rub spicy versions. Not all lamb skewers are created equal. If you tried elsewhere, this skewer is skinnier but very tasty. I also like the fake chicken 素鸡 made of fried soy protein. In a freezing Houston day, this place gets warm and cozy. Recently introduced hot pot variety has a perfect fit for the weather. There are 2 ready combos for 3-4 to dine - 58套餐 $58 combo and 78套餐 $78; as well as a la carte items. I couldn't experience it because it requires 2 people to eat this humongous pot. Locate in the corner of the shopping center. If you blink you will missed this little gem. Everything is hand made and authentic. We try the won ton soup and the broth was delicious and hit the spot on the cold morning. The won ton is filled with meat and vegetables and was delicious. Typical your northern style eating and cooking. The place is small and very limited on seating, and you order from the counter and they bring the food to you. They do have minimum 20 credit card charges, and their food is not expensive. so bring some cash. Otherwise then that this place is definetly worth a shot. read more

This review is solely based on their skewers and so I would most likely come again! But overall I felt like their skewers were very average. I tried the the lamb and the chicken and they felt overcooked so they were super dry. It might be a preference but I felt like the texture was almost like beef jerky. The foods were pretty good. The meal was small portion for the price they charged. I was not very happy because they told me if I paid with credit card they would charge additional 3.95% fees. I ended up had to pay with cash. My credit card company told me they will never charge me more that I pay for what I order. This restaurant was pretty sad to go to. My wife and I wanted to try a good snack restaurant but the food did not match the food we ordered. The only service we got was when they gave us water in cups so small you have to get up to refill it yourself so many times to get refreshed. The food was mediocre at best and was all fried and some fried to death. My wife and I ended up spending over $30 and had to refill our waters and bus our own table. Needless to say we will not return to this place totally not worth it! read more
