I really don't understand why there are so many poor reviews. This facility and it's professionals were more than wonderful in helping me at every step of the way for taking care of my Aunt at the end of her life. Yes, they offer morphine, but I am a Social Worker and morphine doesn't kill you unless you are given an overdose specifically and on purpose. I work with Geriatric patients at the hospital and there are people on morphine for years. I have personally worked with people who were considered end of life who were given morphine for up to a year and didn't pass. Tidewell makes people comfortable so that they don't have to feel the pain of having their bodies shut down. It is extremely painful to die slowly. I do think these people understand what they are seeing. There is so much disinformation in the media. read more

Just felt compelled to write something here when looking something else up online about Tidewell and I was surprised to see such poor reviews. I'm sorry to read the difficult stories have had with their loss. Through my recent experience in October 2024, I came to have a different understanding of not just death, but what hospice is. These folks are trying to predict what they can and plan, finding a delicate balance between intervention and allowing the dying to have dignity in their last days. I imagine everyone's situation is different, but the decision to have a loved one enter hospice can be traumatizing and I know few who know what to expect on their first go with this. I found Tidewell to be professional, have everything spelled out for me in writing (please read the bound literature they hand you and it's like a playbook of what to expect). Through the chaos, I found both in-home care and the final days at the hospice house to be excellent, all things considered. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I found myself constantly grateful to the attentive staff (and volunteers!) who made my family member comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They gave us room to be together in solitude when needed, and promptly arrived any time we felt my loved one needed attention.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I am sad to see how some people have reported additional suffering, but my experience and observation of the Tidewell organization was very positive. read more

What an amazing facility and staff! My mom unexpectedly entered hospice this past weekend, and the team here was just such a blessing. The genuine care of their patients and families is obvious from the moment you enter the facility. Each of our nurses and the docs treated us like family, and my mom was cared for as if she were their mom. We registered with Tidwell and preferred to stay in the hospital. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Tidewell RN only came into our room 2 or 3 times a day and never answered a call or text[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. She did not not keep tabs on hospital nurses to ensure proper medication scheduling. We signed my husband up on Friday, he passed on Monday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]No extra care was given to the family, just ok he's gone we will have funeral home contact you. Stay as long as you need , Bye![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While sitting vigil, Extra chairs were never brought into the room, the hospitality cart had the most stale products you could imagine, and bathing was never offered. To make matters worse we were told the funeral home would contact us, we'll after 20 hours we called the funeral home and my husbands body was lost! Thank goodness Toale found him and promptly rectified the situation. Everyone tells me how wonderful and caring hospice is, that was not our experience at all. read more

I'm sorry for those that felt they did not receive good care. My father received excellent care. One of the things I kept in mind is the employment crisis in healthcare. The team aligned to my dad kept me, my dad's wife and my brother updated on my dad's condition. They answered the phone when I called. I can't thank them enough for how well they took care of him and us as the family. Peace of mind is priceless, I honestly did not have to worry about the care given to him from the nursing staff. The nurses gave us updates on the stages he was in as he progressed toward death. We knew what to expect. No surprises. We received equipment and medication timely. Useless! When my daughter, who was in her early 30s, lost her husband a few years ago she went to a few Tidewell grief group meetings. They offered her NO support and when she met with a counselor, they told her they had nothing for her and made it clear they really didn't want her there. I guess there was no money in it for them or so they thought. What they forget is young people have family members who could very easily make a sizable donation to their organization. Their loss. My money will go to organizations that make a difference and welcome all, no matter their age, race, or ethnicity. read more

I think that the hospice staff should I honestly be ashamed of themselves. My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer that went to the brain and we joined up about four months before she passed and I stopped it after a month because I realize that Tidewell was getting paid over $180 a day and they were coming once a week and doing absolutely nothing not even taking her blood pressure. The nurse was meaningless. So about a month before she passed we readmitted her into hospice care and finally the third nurse that came out with Sharon who is supposedly the head nurse. She was rude, she spoke very very loudly and seem to get off on rubbing it in our face is that my mom was dying which my mom didn't really want to admit till two days before she passed. The day my mom did pass Sharon and another nurse came, my mom was completely out of it, they were so tough on her body the way they were moving her around and talking so harshly about other nurses is not doing what he was supposed to do in front of my mom who I didn't think would understand them but yet they told me to keep talking to her because they hear me. Through her illness I asked to please get her a massage, 13 times because they claim they have a masseuse, they don't. They do nothing but they are paid a fortune hiding behind a mask that they are nonprofit which by the way doesn't mean they're not making a fortune of money that means that they're not paying taxes. It was a very very awful experience and I put all the responsibility on the staff for that... My Moms illness and passing was and is the worst thing that happened to me... I miss her constantly, she lived with me for 22 years. If you can find a loving hospice, find it! read more

My husband recently started hospice care with this company. They sent a bunch of drugs of different types with dosage instructions. At the end of the day with the last dose, he went into a near catatonic state. Slack jawed, no expression, unable to speak. I called the triage nurse for help. Her attitude seemed almost flippant, and she asked ME what I wanted them to do! I know zip about drug interactions or what an overdose looks like or whether he needed emergency care. It was a terrifying, lonely experience. I do NOT recommend these people, and I wish we had known this before we started. read more

The nursing staff at Tidewell in Sarasota were awesome. They were caring, responsive, and everything that you would want in such sad times. They cared about the patient, and kind to the family. The administration staff was informative and helpful. The patient's room was spacious, private, and contained a sofa and several comfortable chairs. The room looked out onto a canal and had a little porch where visitors could sit. The landscaped surroundings at Tidewell in Sarasota were lovely and well-maintained. Not sure about the other reviews on here, but when my father began to decline I decided to have him evaluated for hospice. Upon accepting him into their service they were nothing but responsive. At 11 pm on a Friday his condition had changed and after calling the 24 hour line a nurse was dispatched to our home for an evaluation and medication review. And this wasn't the first time I had to call...always responded with a visit, always caring and helpful. When my father passed they handled everything...he had pre-paid his funeral out of state, they contacted that funeral home and had the arrangements transferred locally so it would be honored. They were so very helpful throughout the process and provided so much help when we were beside ourselves with grief. Could not have gone through this process without them. read more

The nurses, social workers and the staff on the phones and who delivered and picked up the equipment were very responsive, sensitive and caring. My mom died last month and was in Tidewell Hospice's (Sarasota) care for about 6 weeks. Hospice programs have two purposes: care for the dying patient, and keep the next of kin in the loop. Tidewell failed my mother and me. When my mom took a turn for the worse, a nurse at her nursing home called Tidewell. The Tidewell nurse then called me, but didn't call my cellphone--she called my home phone and left a message that my mom was unresponsive. I was out of town and didn't get that message until days later. Long story short, the nursing home called me later that day to let me know my mom was close to death, then called about 20 minutes later to tell me she had died. The nursing home had told the hospice nurse that my mom was unresponsive and her skin was mottling. At that point, any responsible hospice nurse would have gone to the nursing home as soon as possible to access my mom's condition and keep me posted. The next day I spoke with that nurse and she told me she had other meetings scheduled that afternoon. (Hmm...so appointments with people who weren't dying were more important than seeing someone who might in fact be dying?) If Tidewell's not going to be with the patient at the most critical moment--when they die--and they can't be bothered to track down the next of kin when the patient is near death, what's the point of bringing them in? Tidewell's incompetence made me wonder how others saw them. If you google "Tidewell Medicare fraud" you'll see that in February 2021 Tidewell was accused by Medicare auditors of taking $8.3 million in U.S. government funds they weren't entitled to. At this point, you may be wondering if there are any other hospice companies you might consider for your loved one. Well, you're out of luck because Tidewell has a monopoly on hospice services in Sarasota County. If you decide to use Tidewell Hospice, proceed with caution. Be sure to ask for emails reports--not phone calls--so as to have a record. And don't be surprised if they fail to show up when things take a turn for the worse, because they're too busy dealing with new clients. Kinda like a Ponzi scheme...you gotta keep that new money rolling in, right? I wish I'd declined hospice services for my mom and not wasted precious Medicare funds. read more

When my stepmother was suddenly diagnosed with 4th stage lung cancer, we knew our best option was to give her a peaceful death. Tidewell in Sarasota, on Rand Blvd., was the perfect place for us. With helpful, compassionate care, they provided a space where our extended family could spend time together, comfortably conversing in the spacious lounge area and freely coming in and out of her private room, as she was given everything possible to ease her transition. It was a supportive and respectful space for us to take our time, be with her, be with each other, and experience the sadness and family connection of the occasion. I give this a 1 star review because I am unable to give it no stars. My father was at the hospice house for one day and it was the most horrific thing I experienced they sedated him so much he could no longer talk to us. He left our house talking to us. The nurses were rude and pushy and even when he was sedated on over the max of what they were supposed to give him they came in to give him more pushing and forcing my mother to agree to this there website is false I wanted to bring him outside in a wheelchair and it was a fight the fact that they have there own patios and a fire place to sit is not to enjoy your loved ones at the final times of there life. They are there only to euthanize your loved ones and push it along before you can even say bye. My father was rushed to the emergency room after I took him out over there and they said he was overly medicated and close to and overdose. This was less then 24 hours after he left his home. These nurses are heartless and have no empathy for the fact that your loved one is in their hands and care: I would never ever recommend this place. Please find somewhere else read more

I have always heard fantastic things about Hospice.In fact my friend in Hilton Head was so impressed with the caring and real compassion shown to her husband battling cancer.At the last couple of weeks of his life they were at his home daily helping with hygiene etc.Tidewell nurses must all work on commission just like reps that visit doctors offices.I have a closet full of meds not ordered that keep arrivin*,constipation pills even though the once a week visit we say no constipation.We are probably now in the last week of ( care) and now they are too busy to visit.More money to be made with a new patient.The nurse on call was rude because now only a few days left to live.I was told to call 911 lift assist if I needed help to lift him up from the bed.What a disgrace!!!! My mom was under Tidewell Hospice of Bradenton Florida. My mom was everything to me and we took care of her in our house until the end but i need to say a few things. I want to say the second nurse who was appointed to take care of mom was great on top of everything ordering meds, checking mom over for bed soars listening to her lungs, blood pressure and so on. When we received our second nurse she was very shocked about what the first nurse never did which was most of the above mentioned items. we had a social worker who was very nice and came once a month to make sure we didn't need anything. Our CNA nurse was so sweet and caring she even brought mom a bouquet of balloons for moms birthday. So why a two star rating well here it goes. When mom passed January 9th 2022 it was a Sunday night. It was hard and overwhelming because she had went down hill so slowly but that night she went very quickly. By the time we got everything taken care of it was 3:30 in the morning. I texted the cna nurse the next morning to let her know and I never heard a word back. I never heard a word from the social worker. I never heard from anyone except the regular nurse. Don't expect any support after your love one passes away. They drop you like a hot potato. I also wanted to say I was speaking to their Grief counselor who was nice and I liked her but she kept forgetting to reschedule me and said I fell off her appointment calendar to call back so I would go weeks without speaking with someone that I really needed. After they got her back on track she called twice and then I never heard from her again. I was told that unfortunately she was doing this with four other clients. At a time like this when you really need help its hard to feel abandoned. One last note, on the night mom passed I called hospice weekend number to ask for a nurse to come out because mom was going down hill fast but i hung up and forgot to ask when the nurse would be here i called back and asked when the nurse would be out they said about 45 minutes. I said I don't think she will last that long and usually if there was a problem someone would be out in 15 minutes. The person on the other end said if you got that fast of response before I was lucky but tonight it will be 45 minutes. Again not very compassionate at the hardest time. They were great in a lot of ways but be careful in what you expect. read more

My mother recently was a resident of Sunset Lake Rehab and Care Center in Venice, Fl. for almost three years. In her final 3 months of life, 97 and suffering from dementia, she needed additional care that the Sunset staff couldn't completely fulfill, so Hospice was recruited. They had a staff center close to her room and provided all the necessary extra care and expertise that Mom required. People like Mary Beth, Linda and Bettina treated my Mom like family and made her final days as comfortable as possible. My sister and I will always be grateful! read more

I'm surprised by the other reviews here as we have had an amazing experience with them. My 92 year old father was diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer and they were so incredibly supportive. I was gutted with the diagnosis and had quickly gotten on a flight from NJ to FL. They met with us the next day and set everything up for him to go home. They had a nurse out to his home the next day when they released him from the hospital. Every time we've needed a new medication to make him comfortable they've gotten it to us within an hour. Any equipment has been delivered within 4 hours and they spend as much time with you as you need. Everyone has been kind, very experienced and caring. I cannot say enough about them and specifically Kara our nurse. read more

My father was a nursing home resident and patient of Tidewell. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, cardiac issues, and so on. He was in his early 90's at the time. Though he received treatment for the bladder cancer and the urologist said his bladder was clear, I could see by symptoms (I've worked in the medical field for over 20 years) that he was showing signs of metastasized cancer. He did have cognitive and short-term memory barriers as well. I could see he was declining and in horrible pain. I called the Tidewell nurse who prescribed Tylenol. It did nothing. Called again after a few days. Then they gave him Tramadol. Again... no effect. He also was eating very little, showed bloating, no appetite, losing weight, becoming more frail and weak to the point he was falling and ended up in a wheelchair and incontinent. Again, I noted this to hospice nurse and it was dismissed as she saw him eating some breakfast and declared him "doing fine." When just trying to put on his sweater, he grimmaced and moaned in pain; any movement was painful. This went on for over a week. I finally had to call the clinical director and threaten to shoot him up with heroin if that would relieve his pain and insisted on morphine sublinqual or IV as he was not assimilating anything by mouth. She finally had the nurse administer the morphine after weeks of him suffering. At last, he was not in pain. Shortly afterwards, he was moved to hospice house where he passed. His suffering and the suffering of my mother (his wife) and myself was horrendous and unnecessary. No one listened to me! Even at hospice house, my Dad had trouble breather and there was an oxygen tank in the room; I asked them to give him oxygen, but instead they squirted more morphine into his mouth and knocked him unconscious. No explanation... just did it without saying a word to me and left. My mother received hospice services from Hope Hospice (moved her to Ft. Myers) and they were EXCELLENT!! Forget Tidewell. read more

This was my third experience with this Hospice facility and the third time was no better than the first two. In this case, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable cancer, sent directly from the hospital to the Hospice in the middle of Covid, in June, and died 10 days later. They dragged their feet, as usual, giving pain management medication and anxiety relief. All you get is the same song and dance about 'break through pain.' The whole point is to avoid breakthrough pain and they never medicated him so that he wasn't agitated and stressed. I had to ask every day to increase it. One night, he was in great agitation for almost 3 hours (11 pm - 1:30 am). The night RN said she gave him everything she could and I had to wait until the morning. My poor husband was in such distress. She said to me, perhaps I'd like to move him to another facility! How cruel! There is NO other facility in Sarasota. I told her she knew that perfectly well, so I was stuck. She just glared at me. Little did I know that she could have indeed contacted the on-call physician to override the current orders and give him more medication. She essentially lied to me. Most of the other staff was wonderful, but they all have the attitude that less medication is better and you had to wait until the person experienced pain, hallucinations, agitation, etc before any more medication was dispensed.
