I highly recommend Dr. Hsu! PT2: FILLING & EXTRACTION Recommendation confirmed... Dr. Hsu did an amazing job with my filling and extraction. At the start of my procedure, she gave me a numbing gel then began local anesthesia--I barely felt the needle. She did this (I think) by using an interesting technique with another rounded tool that moved back and forth while she was using the needle. The numbing was done so well that when the extraction was complete, I was a bit surprised--I didn't feel anything. Following the procedure, the healing was quick and I didn't need any pain relievers. I'm really glad I switched over to Dr. Hsu and have already scheduled my next cleaning. __________ PT1: I was nervous about getting a dental check-up since the Covid-19 pandemic is back at Tier Purple but the office felt safe with multiple air filters for ventilation, physical barriers around the reception desk, low density/ appropriate social distance inside, and Dr. Hsu was wearing layers of PPE. As a dentist, she was extremely professional and she put me at ease--this was my second dental check-up in 7 years (my first being with another dentist whose staff did not wear PPE) so I have a bit of dental anxiety. After cleaning my teeth (that was extremely relaxing) and doing an inspection of my x-rays, she provided clear explanations and recommendations on the work I need. This includes what I went in for--one of my teeth has mostly fallen out and I need an extraction. I'll be sure to post an update in a couple of weeks after my surgery! If you're looking for a new dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Hsu! I was nervous about getting my teeth cleaned during Covid. But I definitely felt clean inside the office. There were multiple air purifiers, plexiglass screens, bottles of hand sanitizers, and a temperature check. Dr. Hsu wore tons of PPE, including face masks and face shield. I was the only patient inside although there was obviously room for more, and I was also relieved to see that the chairs were sanitized in between each patient's use. Dr. Hsu was really patient and gave great direction, which helped make the teeth cleaning and check up process super smooth. Like the reviewers below said, her teeth cleaning techniques were really relaxing. Dr. Hsu also checked my mouth for oral cancer! I don't think my previous dentists ever did this, so am very appreciative. She also spent more time than my previous orthodontist's office did in giving me tips on how to take care of my teeth with permanent retainers. Thanks Dr. Hsu!! read more

TL;DR: this dental office is simply the best in south Bay Area! Two weeks ago I had my cleaning appointment with Dr. Hsu. It was my first time to visit this "new" office as Dr Cotner retired. Staff were all very friendly and took extra measures to ensure both patients and staff are properly protected over COVID-19. Dr. Hsu started with checking my oral health and conditions. After taking X-Ray, she found 3 teeth with cavities. I was a bit surprised as I do teeth cleaning every year until Dr. Hsu, those cavities are discovered. Also Dr. Hsu explained one tooth is fractured, then I realized it was the reason why the tooth bothering some times. Today I just had 4 tooth fillings done. It literally didn't hurt and I didn't even feel it, I actually fell asleep at some point during the procedure. When looking at my teeth now, I'd say, omg, Dr. Hsu saved my teeth, and the filling looks BEAUTIFUL!!! I'd say "thank you very much Dr. Hsu" read more

Dr Hsu listened to my concerns, patiently explained everything I needed to know. She's very knowledgeable and detailed. She meticulously cleaned my teeth herself too. Dr. Hsu recently took over Dr. Cotner's dental practice with Dr. Cotner retiring. This was my first visit with Dr. Hsu and it could not have been better! Especially during Covid, precautions were taken to make us all feel safe. The X-ray scans were soooo much more comfortable than my previous dentist who put plastic bag wrapped X-ray blockers! The general cleaning was all performed by Dr. Hsu which made less contact. I have to say, this was the most comfortable cleaning I've ever done- period. I wasn't holding onto the seat for dear life like when my previous dentist worked on me lol. Dr. Hsu also gave clear directions as to where she wanted me, or how to guide my tongue, close my mouth, expose a side. Believe it or not, all of those details make it easier for the patient and dentist. But congrats to Dr. Hsu on the new practice! Finally a relatable and reliable dentist. read more

Dr. Hsu is an excellent dentist, as she is very caring, patient, knowledgeable, honest, and very professional. I've always been fearful of dentists, but Dr. Hsu quickly put me at ease with her soothing and pleasant demeanor. She has a very gentle touch, as I felt no pain during the appointment. She did a great job with my cleaning and exam, and answered my concerns regarding several teeth. Dr. Hsu is a rare gem nowadays, as she is both ethical and conservative and doesn't try to do any unnecessary work like many greedy dentists often do! The positive part of this review is for Doctor Cotner herself. I have had two teeth cleanings with her and both were fine. It wasn't anything special or particularly outstanding about the experience or service, but it was good. She is very friendly and makes the overall process pretty positive. The negative part of this review (1.5 stars subtracted) is for the billing and office staff experience I have had. From the first to the second appointment, my dental insurance changed and I have had a name change, so I gave Doctor Cotner and her office assistant all the new info (name and type of insurance, the primary's name, SSN, etc.) - all of which they noted on a post-it. Then, a long time after the appointment I receive a call telling me that my dental insurance had expired (the old one) and that I should give them a call. I called several times and finally left a message again giving them all the info they would need about my new insurance. Weeks go by, so I assume that the confusion cleared up. Nope. I receive a call this week that my insurance had expired. Apparently, nobody listened to the content of my voicemail because they sure remembered that they had received one from me. Finally, I give them the info again and they check the insurance policy while I am on the phone. It all woks out. There isn't much that a doctor's office is expected to provide in terms of service, but correctly taking down and retaining information is one of the musts. This office didn't do well at all in this regard. Perhaps I will go back, since it is hard for me to imagine that they will misplace my info again, now that they have it in their billing system. read more

Ok, I admit it... I LOVE going to the dentist. I love having my teeth cleaned, love the sound of the drill (OK, kidding on this one!), and I really love the free toothbrush! Dr. Cotner actually did my cleaning! I can't remember the last time the dentist actually did the dirty deed! She was gentle, thorough and my teeth look great. I am even flossing (hate it!). I want to echo everyone else as yelp helped me find Dr. Cotner in the first place. The office is lovely, parking is a breeze, the staff is friendly and yes Dr. Cotner actually cleans your teeth herself! I came in for a cleaning and had some minor pain. She was patient in discussing options with me. I chose the most conservative treatment and she was upfront about the pro's and con's. In the end mid-visit it became obvious I would have to instead see an endodontist and she went the extra mile to make sure I would be comfortable until they got me in and her staff made the appointment for me. I have been going to Dr. Cotner pretty much since I was born and she is so sweet! She is very warm and welcoming and you can tell that she really cares about the health of her patients. She is very gentle and always takes things slow, especially if you are nervous. I like that she focuses on preventative measures and she has really helped me understand how to keep my teeth in top shape so that i can avoid major (or minor) problems. She recently moved into a brand new office and it is really nice. Her office lady, Marie, is also incredibly sweet and helpful. Both of these lovely ladies make going to the dentist an easy task. Switched to Dr Cotner because she was closer to home and I strongly suspected my previous dentist was drilling me unnecessarily (turns out I was right). She's honest, a bit old-fashioned but I like that, and very professional. The only prob I ever had was one time when they accidentally charged my old insurance. Dr. Donna Cotner has been my family's dentist for over thirtyfive years. Twenty years ago, I moved to the North Bay and bounced amongst the local dentists up there. I may have been a bit spoiled, but I never found the quality of care Donna gave me. However, she continued to care for my three adult sons. They always have great things to say about her. Recently, while in need of a long over due dental visit, one of my sons arranged an appointment with Donna. A lot of work was needed and I had some apprehension, but the visit was fantastic, It was quite reminiscent of the excellent care she offered to my young family many years ago. Finding a good dentist is a very daunting experience to me in the last few decades, until I met Dr Cotner and I have been with her for over 10 years. I notice a lot of dentists like to over-diagnosis your symptoms and ask you to do a lot of extra dental work such as deep cleaning, x-ray and etc. to beef up their bills. It is not Dr. Cotner's case at all. She is a very professional and caring dentist and she always provides pragmatic and honest advice to you and informs you what is your teeth problem and how to take care of it. She is also very patience and explains very throughly with all your questions. I wish we have more this type of dentists in Bay Area. My whole family is now going to her for the dental work. It is very funny as my kids are so excited to see her every time when we go to do the check up. They like to ask her all the silly questions and play with her and the time is just gone by really quick. They also get a toy after the clean up. I was a patient of Dr. Cotner's for 4 years and I have recently changed dentists. Here's why. The Good: Donna is pleasant. I enjoyed visiting her & her office staff. I always got an appointment at a convenient time & she did not recommend excessive dental work. For a routine checkup and cleaning, she was perfectly adequate. The Bad: It was when the unusual situations arose that her lack of skill really became apparent. Twice I was badly burned by being a patient of Dr. Cotner's. - The first time I fell and damaged my front teeth. I called her emergency line but no one answered so I left several voice mails saying I needed an immediate appointment. I never got a call back so I ended up going to another dentist to have the work done. - The second time was a more egregious error on her part. For my past 3 cleanings I mentioned extreme sensitivity in one of my teeth & she diagnosed it as a receding gum line even though I experienced zero pain along my gum line. The pain got worse and worse and I told her about it and how I was ODing on sensodyne... and she said, the same thing "receding gum line" So I went to get a second opinion & the new dentist was able to diagnose the fracture of my tooth within 60 seconds using newer technology than Dr. Cotner has available to her. I was scheduled for a root canal that same day & today I am pain free. I would avoid Dr. Cotner for serious dental work, although she is convenient for routine checkups. read more
