The food is awful. Will never return. Food seemed frozen or otherwise not freshly prepared. The ambiance is strange and feels very empty. Service is not friendly or attentive and the vibe is so weird with prepared foods and odd ingredients visible. Get pupusas elsewhere in town like Rinconcito Hispano. read more

I would give zero stars, if possible. I brought my 6 yr old nephew and we ordered pupusas for him and cheese enchiladas with mole sauce for me. His small (very small) pupusa came first, and then the enchiladas. They were cold to the taste, and when I brought them back in to ask them to heat them up (maybe they were frozen?) she took them away. She came back a minute later saying that it was not possible to warm them up, it was the wrong kind of cheese (???). I asked her to try anyway. Then in 10 more minutes the manager came out and said they couldn't heat them up, it was the wrong kind of cheese, this cheese was for pupusas and would burn up (???). They he said it would wreck the mole sauce. Basically they did not even want to try to make it right. My family is from Mexico City and I have never had Mexican food (or any food) as bad as this. Try Lucharito's down the block. Don't waste your time or money at Tikal. read more

Nice little Guatemalan/Mexican spot in Greenport. My friend and I stopped in for lunch after doing a bit of wine tasting (and oyster shucking/slurping) around the area. We started with some guacamole and chips - could have been more flavorful but honestly, you just can't go wrong with guacamole. I ended up ordering a trio of al pastor tacos which were excellent. Succulent, tender, and filling (and the pineapple is always such a great accompaniment). It's a fairly large restaurant and was on the quieter side when we dined in, so service was very fast. My friends and I had a great lunch at Tikal. We were pleasantly surprised by how big the entrees were and were not even hungry when dinner time came around. Great price for the value. We ordered the chips and guacomole and asked for a side of salsa. Those chips were freshly fried & crunchy and the guacomole was heaven .. melt in your mouth avocado goodness. I am not usually a chips type of person, but I was hooked and we devoured the app. I split the steak burrito and chicken & steak fajita with my husband. The burrito wrap was nice and chewy and the content was extremely flavorful. You know its a good burrito when : (1) none of the contents fall out of the burrito while you eat it and (2) burrito wrap remains dry during the entire meal. For the fajita, my favorite was actually the tortilla which was similar to what is used for the pupusa. read more

I have to say that this has to be the most disappointing Latin food I have ever eaten. I am an avid traveler so i know my Latin food. The tostadas were lacking beans of all things! I chose guacamole and salsa tostadas. The tostada was a fried corn tortilla with guacamole dolloped on top. The guac had only a few tomato pieces with clumps of Cotija cheese. Clumps! The salsa tostada was like one big chip with salsa? They almost had the nachos right with the exception of the large pieces of beef that were layered in! The steak could have been cut to much smaller eating pieces so that the customer doesn't have to use a knife and fork on nachos. read more

The food was great, good combinations of flavors and delicate to a certain extent. What we didn't like was the service. There were 5 people at our table, and we only got 4 place settings. We asked for an extra setting, but when it came, there was no napkin. Then when the food came (and it was meant to be shared), there were no sharing plates. The waitress brought two plates, when we asked her for 5 plates. They were not busy so I wish I had a better experience here. Don't think we'll be coming back again, even though the prices are reasonable and the food is good. read more

Love this place! We have now stopped there 2 years in a row on our way to Shelter Island. The food is fresh and delicious. They also have a great kids menu. The mole sauce was some of the best I've had and, if only, I could make guacamole as well they can... definitely recommend this place. read more

Underwhelming Guatemalan/ Mexican restaurant in Greenport. Meal started promising with sweet plantains that were nicely done. Ordered a carne and an el pastor taco as appetizers and both came with guacamole on top that was bland and the meats were under seasoned. I ordered carne asada con camarones but they served me the beef stew instead. What ever, I was hungry and the food took forever to come out anyway. I didn't feel like arguing or waiting any longer so I just ate it anyway. It was pretty bland though the meat was tender. Tried the carne adobada, like a pork steak which also was bland and a bit too fatty and chewy. Service was slow but courteous and prices are very low for the area. Quite disappointing and I can not recommended it. read more

It was my husbands birthday and I wanted to get him a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. I left our hotel to go find this. On the sign it said breakfast. I didn't notice at first that it was Latin- American but that's ok. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and a cafe con leche. The woman taking orders said they didn't have coffee and sent me to Aldi (across the street) but they were closed. I went back to wait for the sandwich which hadn't been ordered yet. And I though $6 for this - I'm used to $3 bodega breakfast but I realize this is kind of a resort town I guess. When the sandwich was ready I took it and brought it back to my husband to find that it was great! It was on one of those large Portuguese rolls and grilled to perfection- not dry and really enough for 2 or someone with a big appetite. The sandwich gets 5 stars but the fact that they had no coffee (I assume to go as I saw carafes if coffee there) I deducted 1 star. Can't say anything about the rest of the menu. read more

It appears that Tikal is the sad version of the "authentic" and "reasonably priced" Mexican food available to residents and visitors of the lovely Greenport area. The unfortunate bias of visiting so many excellent Mexican places around the Island makes you see right through this mediocrity. How sad. I ordered the Chilaquiles special from a register where the worker was very visibly annoyed. When I asked her the size of the portion I was snapped at...still gave it the benefit of the doubt, though, because if the food is good enough the service takes a back seat. Out come the chilaquiles. Very nice presentation, but upon digging it was only nachos drenched in a (very spicy and tasty) salsa verde and topped with the chewiest and hardest bits of carne asada I've ever had. The side was greasy, bland beans with yellow rice. The kicker came when I went to pay - $15 for the plate and a bottle of water. I felt like I was going to get sick. Maybe it's the nature of Greenport, maybe it's supposed to be this expensive, but certainly not worth it for minimal service to the table and no water with your meal. I can't say I wouldn't give it another chance for tacos maybe, but if you are a serious fan of Mexican food, I'd recommend to avoid this place and get seafood around the area. read more

Ate at Tikal last night after getting off the train. So, so good. We had chips and guacamole, the tinga torta, and mixed fajitas (beef, chicken, and shrimp). All three were awesome. The chips are homemade as are the tortillas. The shrimp were particularly tasty. It's definitely legit Mexican. I'm a Texan and I tasted all the great aspects of the Mex in TexMex (and none of the Tex). Really nice service too. Can't wait to go back. read more

I like this place. Why, you ask? Because the food is really GOOD, portions large and the staff is nice. Mind you, when one walks by, it isn't the most inviting storefront. They need to work on that and, it doesn't help that the place is way too large (I believe it used to house a Starbucks until it was run out of town, thankfully), but if you give it a try you will be most pleasantly surprised. Everything is pretty darn fresh. Tamales are my favorite. Steamed to perfection, stuffed with tasty meats and quite filling for the $3.50 they charge. Empanadas, really good too. My husband had Enchiladas Mole with Chicken, plate came with rice and black beans, so good. They also have some very interesting tropical smoothie type juices, tacos, tostadas and all kinds of other tempting menu items. Some I can't translate. Give it a try. This rating is solely for the food and the portions. Décor is pretty much non existent. It's really bad actually. They are not utilizing the space they have. Such potential to have a super cute Spanish restaurant. Anyway, the food is great. It is super fresh and the portions are big for the price. The food here is spectacular--our only regret was paying outrageous prices for mediocre "New American" food at all the other places in town before discovering this gem. The staff is friendly, and it's really inexpensive. We came around noon and had camarones en chipotle and a breakfast plate with chorizo. The beans and rice that came with both were outstanding, and the corn tortillas were fresh. We also took a pork tamal and a couple pupusas to go, because we couldn't help ourselves! Wish we lived in Greenport, because then we could come here all the time. :) read more

The garnachas look like the Mexican sopes but they taste nothing like Mexican food, they have their unique Guatemalan flavor. Literally craving it all as I type this review ! This place has great super authentic Mexican. We were here for the day visiting from shelter island and got a quick meal to go. The most ridiculous service I have ever experienced. We had 5 adults and a kid, kept trying to seat us on a 4 chair table. Waited an HOUR for our food and only one dish came out, and even that they got the order wrong so had to take it back. Steak fagitas cooked so gamey it was hard to chew... No updates on the food, no apologies, no nothing. The hand made tortillas were pretty good but too bad we didnt get to try any of the other food. After the hour we canceled everything else and just paid for the one dish. I was wondering why this huge restaurant only had 10 tables but apparently they can't even handle 3. Ridiculous. read more

Great spot in an otherwise overpriced and underserved tourist location! We waited at Jerry's for 30 minutes just to get noticed for a drink and left! This place is a diamond in the rough! I think it's Guatemalan. I had the scrambled eggs with chorizo, black beans and cream, phenomenal. Others in my party had egg dishes that were equally great. It's also very reasonably priced. It's very casual, so don't look for a fancy place, but it's great! read more

Authentic, great tasting food at a reasonable price! The steak was seasoned to make your mouth water. Rice and beans are perfect. The chorizo made an excellent accompaniment. I've written about the delicious fish soup here and tonight I had the chicken soup. I thought I'd upload a picture of the chicken soup. It's SOOOO good. The roasted chicken and rice come separate from the stew, so you have to add the rice and chicken as you like to the broth. So the food is ridiculously good, though sometimes I feel like the menu might be hit or miss. Because I have had so many things on the menu, I would urge anyone who has had a less than great experience (with the food) to return again for a hit. read more
