Best Mexican food on Long Island / in the Hamptons without a doubt. Went here right when coronavirus started and it was the perfect retreat from all the madness. Planning to attend many more times even though they will do pickup only, like most restaurants. The staff is amazing and so lovely and so dope. The food is fire. Chilaquiles really stood out (nachos too) but it's all heat. I hope this place continues to kill it despite the crisis right now. I'm looking forward to many more drop-ins at la mejor !!!!! We've had a gamut of items from their extensive menu but my fave is their regular tostada (beans, oaxaca stringy cheese, lettuce and topped with the additive crema) ; both the Mexican and traditional qeusadilla options, and the tacos are lovely too. Al pastor, chorizo, chicken and carnitas are our go to meat options for every dish. Service has always been friendly both when making a pick up order over the phone or in person. Yes, dinner in a deli on the highway.. a few other diners and lots of take out. Really like this cute place on the south side of Montauk Hwy in Hampton Bays. Super tiny unique eatery/ deli. Phone orders coming in. Popular among locals. People were super nice, food was fresh. 3 1/2 for fun Mexican food cooked to order, so chill out a few minutes and have a Jarritos lime soda or a bottled beer. Lol You order at the counter, go get a soda out of the case and tell the guy at the counter, he nods or makes a note and you wait for your order. They bring it out. Fun place. Not a fan of flour chips or the odd tomato pureed red orangy salsa.. but all else were good! On this visit a young man at the next table got up and handed me a cap remover... as they saw me try to open my soda to no success with a twist. The place and people are so likable in their unassuming way yet spicing up lunch or dinner nicely. So yeah.. head on over and have some traditional tacos, burritos, enchiladas etc. Sigh ok.. editing now.. adding a star.. why? because my vegetarian companion liked the effort to make good tacos with lots of flavor. This was probably the best, most authentic tasting Mexican cuisine we've had sicne we moved to the East Coast. In some respects the competition is not even close. It just goes to show, great food can be found anywhere. We almost passed on this little shop right off a very busy highway where we almost died trying to cross the road. We almost gave up again when we encountered their interminably slow line. The last straw was almost, *almost*, how long it took to get our food. Favorite Mexican food I've come across on Long Island! I've been searching for a place that made good tortas (grilled steak sandwich with lettuce,tomato, refried beans, avocado, cheese and mayonnaise on toasted bread) for a while and found it here! Definitely will be coming back! I also got a steak quesadilla and it was great! Homemade tortillas with grilled steak, two different cheeses, lettuce and sour cream, definitely worth $7! This is the real deal. As in, get yourself here asap and order some tacos and DO NOT leave without a slice of the tres leches cake (to die for). I will say that calling ahead is the right thing to do -- because otherwise you'll wait quite awhile for your food. My friends and I ordered takeout, our first night at Hampton Bays (we were staying nearby) and of all the tacos we tried, we all agreed that the carnitas and chicken tinga were the best. I didn't love the pozole tbh, and they didn't give me the right order when I used Try Caviar (pre-order / pre paid), when we returned a second time. I'll miss having this spot around the corner. It's in the middle of the Coronavirus epidemic and we were in deep deep need of some mexican food and comfort. Came here at 10pm on a Friday night and they did not disappoint. Unassuming storefront that also sells some basic grocery items including many Hispanic speciality products (and beers). Delivery as well as pick up ordering quick and easy online via grubhub (and others), especially for anyone who is not comfortable speaking Spanish. Good lord, freaking delicious. I'm a pushover for delicious Mexican breakfast and tried this place on a lark; it was 11:00am and I'd been up for four hours without food or coffee. I looked on Yelp for breakfast burrito and this place did not show up. It could be that I am dense and missed it, doesn't matter. That's what I ordered and it was stellar. There is outside seating but you order at the counter and fetch your own food (and hopefully bus your own table). Inside feels like a bodega and has lots of real Mexican provender on sale. It had the feel inside that the owners might have had the same thing in Mexico, muy authentico. Burrito was delicious, coffee was stock deli coffee and suited me just fine - though I have a proper espresso machine and pull my own, there is a time and a place for deli coffee. Tomatillo salsa was delicious. I sat looking at my empty food container wanting to eat a second one, though past experience elsewhere has proven that an unwise move. If I lived closer this would easily be a once a week deal until I moved up a pant size. read more
