FINALLY!! This has been a loooong time coming. In California, Mother's Day 2020, we were still under COVID precautions, so there was no eating in. I was craving dim sum, plugged in my DoorDash order for THW in Irvine, and received...ramen and octopus balls. Driver got my order switched up it seems. Fast forward 6 years to Hawai'i, I get an IG ad for 50% on some items at their Royal Hawaiian location. I share the post to my husband's IG, the good man paid heed and drove us to Waiks. BBQ pork buns are the BIZZZZNESSSSSS. Mango crab rolls were too rich for me. Siu mai was nice and flavorful. Garlic green beans were *chef's kiss*. XLB stuck to the liner so I was sad about wasted soup. Pan fried chicken dumplings...I easily could've eaten another order! Bright and airy interior...lighting was weird though, would dim intermittently. Easy to book on OpenTable...in fact, I changed my reservation three times en route because of traffic. Park on level 3, location is a quick walk from the garage, and just across Hermes if you need a landmark haha. Also, they validate parking! Not sure what happened with the bill, but quick glance appeared to be 20% off with local ID...husband just let it go. It prob ended up 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
Dare I say this was the best dim sum I've had in the USA?! It was SOOOO good. Every single dish came out piping hot, which I appreciated because you could tell it was cooked to order. The char siu bao was sooooooo tasty, savory, sweet and chewy. Absolute perfection. I also loved the deep fried shrimp/pork dumplings it was kinda mochi-like. The fried rice was huge and so yummy and the green beans were perfectly crunchy and not too saucy. The bill was $69 for 4 people, plus I got 20% off for being local! Such a good deal! I can't believe how delicious this was. Service was attentive and the restaurant is clean and air conditioned well for a hot summers day. They also validate parking in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping center. This is my new go to dim sum restaurant!!! I'm craving it already writing this.
I was excited to try Tim Ho Wan for the first time, especially since it's a highly rated restaurant. I had been craving dim sum, and it was a nice experience with high-quality food. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the deep fried eggplant with shrimp, steamed rice rolls with minced beef, fried dumplings with pork and dried shrimp, spicy wontons, siu mai, and the lava custard sesame balls. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the deep fried eggplant with shrimp. As an eggplant lover, I appreciated how well it was prepared, and the shrimp were large and juicy. Each dish was fresh and flavorful. I do wish there was a slightly larger menu selection. I was hoping to order egg custard tarts for dessert, but they didn't have it. Fortunately, the lava custard sesame balls were yummy! Service was efficient, and the restaurant itself was spacious and clean. While Tim Ho Wan is a bit pricier than some other dim sum spots, it's kinda expected given its well-known name and for being in Waikiki. Overall, it's a solid choice when you're craving quality dim sum and you're near Waikiki!
Great service. Good medium size menu. Order a lot of good signature dishes, my favorite was the sea bass, Chinese broccoli and pork streamed rice roll! Yum
Located in the mall on the 3rd floor so location may be a little hard to find. They do a happy hour special for food so check that out, I believe it starts at 2pm. They have all your classic dim sum choices and the food successfully satisfied my cravings.
I have been to several Tim Ho Wan's - the Hawaii location was my first one. Here are my fav dishes - spicy cucumber, har gow (shrimp dumplings), spicy wontons, green beans and flat rice wrapping with shrimps and chive. The spicy sauce in the other countries has more of a punch. My kid really enjoyed the milk tea with brown sugar jelly. The servers were amazing / so friendly and cordial. The decor was unique- with pots on the ceilings and amazing pics of food all around. The taste in other countries shows more umpf compared to the Hawaii location. We came in at 2pm and stumbled upon a few items on the happy hour menu.
Baked bbq bun still the best in the workd. Siumai was so juicy, stir fried noodle lots of good wokhei, add a liitle hot sauce & u r in heaven; bbq pork rice roll excellent. Vegetable was a bit overcooked & soggy. Sesame lava ball (salty egg yolk) was great, beef brisket noodle had good light broth, some brisket pieces were too chewy & big, sticky rice in lotus leaf great
I dropped by this dim sum place a few weeks ago at the Royal Hawaiian Center. I went during happy hour but unfortunately, the baked barbecue pork buns were not part of the special. Nevertheless, I still ordered them along with the pork siu mai. Both were made to order. The pork buns rock as always and the siu mai was very juicy and piping hot.
Those of you tourists may recognize this establishment. They have a few locations in the US - Vegas, So Cal, Houston, NY... I wanted to give it a higher star rating but it's mediocre at best Food 3/5 Service 3/5 Ambiance 3.5/5 Tried a few items: BBQ pork pan fried noodles - very oily so consider that before ordering this. Shrimp and pork steamed dumplings Pork dumplings Veggie dumplings - not recommend. It was not good IMO. And if you're trying to be healthy or vegan, this is not the restaurant for you. Taro dessert It's ok. If craving dumplings, you may get your fix. They do have Happy Hour. Since it's Waikiki, Kama'ainas get discounts bur apparently they do not provide Kama'aina discounts on weekends.
Ever since they switched locations, it seems the quality of their food has gone down. You used to be able to taste the consistency in good taste, texture, and freshness every time. Now, it's the opposite. I heard they were Michelin recommended at one point. Not sure if they've been able to uphold and maintain that reputation, though. The texture of their shrimp look-fun was incredibly mushy and wet on my last visit. None of their food tasted as hot nor as fresh as it used to. I'm pretty sure their prices have also increased. The parking lot is a bit of a hassle getting in and out of and always seems crowded. Their new location doesn't feel as open and airy as their last. Rather, it feels a bit cramped and not as welcoming with the artificial lighting. Sadly, I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon.
My husband and I were so excited to eat at Tim Ho Wan, but when we got there, we weren't that impressed. The atmosphere was nice and quaint- nothing to rave about, and it was quiet since we got there before the lunch rush. We ordered the wontons in a spicy sauce, shrimp rice rolls, shu mai, daikon cake, spare ribs, stir-fried noodles with char shu pork, and the lava custard balls. Everything tasted okay to us; there was nothing to really rave about. We've eaten at many dim sum places, and we both felt this didn't compare to others we've tried. I felt like the food tasted a little sweeter than I'm used to, and a lot of it came out at room temperature. We both concluded that our favorite item on the menu was the lava custard balls. The lava balls were warm on the inside and crispy on the outside but everything else came out room temperature and oily. The service was lackluster as well. We both finished our water and didn't get a refill but once we asked for the check, we had refills of water. All in all, we both concluded that we won't be coming back to Tim Ho Wan. Prices were high, and we both concluded that we can go elsewhere like in Chinatown for better tasting dim sum.
Tim Ho Wan (THW) is a place I've wanted to try for awhile... being at a conference at the Sheraton, I took the opportunity to grab lunch there. The menu has a good selection of traditional dim sum. I knew my stomach was bigger than my eyes, so I tried to tamper my order. I went with steamed lettuce, the cucumber salad, and the Char Siu Rice roll. All of the dishes were good, with the rice roll as the stand out. The lettuce was good while the cucumber salad was a little underwhelming (it needed more cilantro). Service wise, the staff were very attentive and friendly.
Okay dim sum and good kamaaina deals, but I think the places I usually go to in town are better. We came on a weekday and it filled up in under an hour after opening, all with kamaaina groups. They often post deals on Instagram and they aren't stackable, but when we went, it was 20% off everything with a Hawaii ID. Overall nothing was bad, but some of the pieces were small and most weren't that impressive. I thought the cheung fun or rice rolls were especially mediocre and not very soft, but the dessert egg custard sesame ball was excellent and almost made up for it! Parking is easy, and free to get validated with a Hawaii ID at the customer service office on the first floor of the shopping center. Overall, might come back again if they have a good special, but I won't be regularly braving Waikiki just for Tim ho wan. read more
Tried Tim Ho Wan for the first time after years of putting it off. They really got me with the 20% off KAMA'AINA discount. We had such a pleasant experience. They had a short line set up outside before being seated and then you are handed a menu to check off what you would like to order. We wanted to try as much as possible so we ordered signature baked barbecue pork buns, egg white & shrimp spring roll, fried crab & shrimp dumplings, fried pork & dried shrimp dumpling, black truffle mushroom rice rolls, garlic green beans, pan fried noodles with soy sauce, shrimp won ton soup and pork & shrimp dumpling in hot &spicy sauce scallion noodle. Which was more than enough for three people. Standouts that we loved the egg white & shrimp spring roll it was very crispy. Fried pork & dried shrimp dumplings had a mochi deep fried outer shell but could've used more filling. The garlic green beans looked like they had a lot of garlic but weren't super flavorful. We loved the broth in the shrimp won ton soup. And if you can handle spicy the spicy scallion noodle was delicious! Arriving early allows you to pick wherever you want to sit. It's a bright open floor layout and the tables are nicely space but in can get loud. As the day went by the tables started to fill up fast. Parking is very convenient in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Overall, we will be back to try other menu items and take advantage of their 20% off take out menu. read more
We came for lunch and was not disappointed. While the dining in was pretty full, service quality and timing was reasonable. We started with the steamed shrimp dumplings. There was a generous portion of tasty shrimp. The steamed wrapper was perfect, it didn't stick to the basket liner. Next came the crispy shrimp patty. This was our favorite! Similar to a fried fishcake consistency on the inside, this had incredible crunch on the outside! Very flavorful! Next was the 5-spice chicken wings. This was tasty, not too salty. It was tender and juicy, nicely fried. Was hoping the outer coating had a little more crunch to it. We finished our lunch with an order of fried mochi balls that had ground pork filling. Another tasty dish that was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Thank you for the 20% kamaaina discount! We will certainly return to try other menu items. read more

New location of Tim Ho Wan seems smaller but has nice ambiance. We came for early dinner because of the time zone difference, which just happened to be happy hour. They have 20% off and $5 drinks. We really liked our dim sum order: 1. Beef ribs - so well marinated, amazing flavor, a little bit fatty, on the oilier side, has potatoes underneath 2. Shrimp and pork footballs - is what I call them, the best quality footballs we think 3. Radish cake - was ok, a little soft and closer to Taiwanese style than HK style imo, and didn't like the sriracha sauce too much, not the best radish cake I've ever had but to me radish cake is like what I've heard people say about pizza - you can't go too wrong 4. Stir fry noodles with char siu- the star of the meal, they were thin and crispy and wok fried. No white onions which is good for my dietary restrictions. We loved this. 5. Ordered congee, spare ribs, beef balls and baked pork buns Everything tasted just okay When we have a rental car next week, we'll go to KAPIOLANI restaurant for more varieties of dim sum and much cheaper prices too read more
My absolute favorite from here are the shrimp har gow, garlic green beans, and baked buns. The green beans were different during this recent visit, it wasn't as garlicky and didn't have much taste. Other than that, food is always yummy and they're quick here. Lately, we've coming in when it wasn't as busy and I love that! It used to be super busy at their old location. Tim Ho Wan is one of the cleanest Chinese restaurants, a huge bonus!!! read more

Ahhhhh still my favorite dim sum in the whole island, possibly whole state. Thanks for reopening! I've been waiting for a long time! (Also finally I decided to go to Waikiki!) I normally don't bother writing updates but I have to share my experience on their reopening!! Growing up in HK, the capital of dim sum, this place, originally from HK, really reminds me of home. It's not your regular dim sum. It's a bit elevated in terms of flavor, quality, presentation, and also prices lol. They still have the staples of dim sum, but they just do it better because the chefs care about quality over quantity. My favs include eggplant with shrimp, chive and shrimp dumplings with transparent sticky wrapping, chicken feet in oyster sauce (not your typical orange garlic sauce), and my hubs' favorite baked bbq pork bun. Although not my fav, their tofu skin and deep fried shrimp dumplings with wasabi mayo were also enjoyable. Can't forget to mention they did fried rice the correct way - charred with wok hei (the aroma from using a wok). Real FRIED rice, not just mixing rice with ingredients in a pot. Their decor was modern, chic and cute too. The designer did a great job with the ceiling centerpiece and the wall decor with the steamed basket lids! Also enjoy the big arches inside the restaurant and as the window frames as well. Offers 1 hour parking validation directly from Tim ho wan. Kamaaina 3 hours at the office on ground floor. Happy hour 2-6pm with 15% off. I'm coming next time! So so so so happy they opened back up. Go check them out. I hope they do well! read more

Went here to check out their 50% off Kamaaina deals on a few select items and 20% off their other dim sums. They didn't disappoint...the dim sums were yummy ! Our favorites were their Signature Baked BBQ Pork Buns and their Pork & Shrimp Sui Mai! Their restaurant is bright and clean and service was as expected for a Chinese restaurant . read more

Wow, first time trying this place again in over 6 years since my last review. They are currently promoting a 50% off kama'aina discount on select items "order as many as you want for 50% off" on Instagram which is why we decided to come in. After they checked our ID and we got the bill I noticed they did not apply the discount but only the usual 20% kama'aina. The server said we had to show it before we got the bill which also had an additional order that we did not order or receive, the promotion says just show your ID not that we had to show them the post at all. They did adjust the bill after fixing the additional charge and adding the 50% off for the select items but only gave us 50% off for one of each of the dishes, which is pretty off putting since the post says order as many as you want for 50% off but at that point I didn't have the time or energy to wait for them to fix it again. We ordered the brisket with dry noodles ($17), it was okay I'm assuming the sauce was from the brisket which wasn't much flavor and the brisket was very tough but anyway we got almost half way through before finding a bug inside. We also ordered the salted egg buns but it never came. read more

First time eating at Tim Ho Wan since their move to the new location in Royal Hawaiian Center. They are now located in Building A on third floor... right next to the stairs leading to the parking garage. So, it's super easy if you're driving and parking here. It's wide open, bright, and clean. Menu has pictures of the food, typical of Chinese restaurants. Service was fast and friendly. You are given a small clipboard with a paper list of the available entrees, and you just check what you want. Easy peasy. Food was excellent, highly recommended. read more
They moved to a different location around the corner and the service has definitely improved. We were kindly greeted and sat at a comfortable table. Server greeted us with menu and pencil to fill out order. Tea arrived promptly and then the dishes started arriving. I ordered 10 items and every thing was hot and savory. The bill was pricey for 2, but worth it! Nothing worst than a bad experience! Keep up the good work and we'll be back to try everything else on the menu! read more
I was craving some dumplings today and stumbled upon here. The wait time wasn't too bad. I came in with no reservation and got seated immediately! The restaurant looks nice and clean. Not your typical Hawaii dim sum. The dim sum here is much more authentic and not the more Americanized dim sum that you would normally find. The food was very good but not perfect. The BBQ buns were delicious and cold chicken equally yummy. The steamed vegetables were ok but a little disappointing and looked like they just dumped a spoonful of jar garlic on it. The service also brought down the rating. Almost non existent service after we ordered and our waiter didn't look like he wanted to be there Overall a good experience but i kind of like the Americanized dim sum sometimes. read more
Amazing food! Ever since they relocated to another spot in the Royal Hawaiian Center, there's been a lot more space. They do a happy hour of 20% on food, beer and wine from 2pm to 6pm, which is a pretty good deal in Waikiki. read more
First time to the new location after they moved, The new location is on the same 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian shopping center but all the way at the end closest to the parking garage. Here's some tips, they have a 15% Kamaaina rate but only Monday thru Thursday, Happy hour is from 2-6 pm at 20% off and they validate parking for one hour. If you're kamaaina just bring your receipt $25 or more to the shopping center guest services for 3 hours parking. Our service was prompt, and quick! we ordered 7 items. Baked BBQ Pork Buns - My favorite, similar to manapua but better w the more crispy type sweet bun. Highly recommend. Pork Shu Mai - Very tasty and also one of my favorites Soup Pork Dumplings - This was a special and it was very good! Highly recommend. $13,99 for six pieces and not on their regular menu. Turnip Cake - Just okay but as good as turnip can be. Steamed Rolled Rice w BBQ Pork (similar to a look funn noodle) was okay Shrimp Har Gao - shrimp dumplings were good. Lava Custard Sesame Ball - very interesting and a must try, similar to a Jin dui with lava custard inside. A little sweet for me and trying once is good enough for me. We visited Tim Ho Wan because my daughter had seen a tiktok video about it. So there you have it, tiktok sells. Our experience was we had to stand and wait in a line for about 20 minutes and then were ushered to our seats. The interior isn't fancy, I've been in dim sum places in Honolulu and NYC's Chinatown that had more of a fun and "authentic" feeling atmosphere- but it was very clean. Tables were rather close together but not so much it distracted. This restaurant didn't walk around selling items from carts, instead you pick them off a menu and they bring the dishes out. I prefer the carts, its fun to see the items and encourages trying more things. The dim sum itself was very tasty! The sticky rice in lotus leaf was definitely the superstar here though. It was absolutely delicious. The baked BBQ pork bun was also delicious- the outside of them had been brushed with a sugary egg wash and that added a really delightful crust effect. The steamed pork dumpling was good, not the best I've ever had but certainly better than the worst. The garlic green beans were definitely too heavy on the garlic- it had a pretty acrid taste and we quickly pushed them aside. Luckily, everything else made up for them. The lava sesame custard balls were outstanding. Price-wise, we thought it was more than fair, especially considering its premium location inside the high end Royal Hawaiian Center. The cost of our dim sum and fried noodle lunch in Waikiki was outrageous. Coupled with the $3 validated parking at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, we ended up spending $70 for lunch. The portions are small, the fried noodle without any meat in it was $9.95. I had to hold myself from laughing when the waiter brought out the noodle dish as the serving was very small...enough for only one person. Toppings for their fried noodle included carrots, bean sprouts, and green onion. I will never go back to this restaurant. They offer Kamaaina rates but it is definitely not worth it. We really enjoyed ourselves here today. It's not your typical, with carts and dark walls, this place is clean and ran really well. It's like a more upscale dim sum complete with boba, alcohol and great service. They even spaced out every one dining in and we appreciated that very much. Has your usual ha gow, shumai, chicken feet, all the classic, bbq bun was amazing, and the money bag dumplings in chili sauce hit the spot as well. Shrimp with ooozy cheese special was a nice surprise. Sago with taro and coconut milk dessert was right on the money. Server brought out warm wipes for clean hands, and added a 15 off for Kamaaina discount. Respect to this Michelin star dim-sum restaurant. Sometimes you just need finer things! read more

First time trying this place. Decided to stroll Waikīkī on my day off. Ended up here as we've always wanted to try it. This is not your typical dim sum restaurant so don't expect Chinatown prices. We ordered fried noodles, chef special shumai, soup dumplings, turnip cakes, charsiu lookfun. Everything was great. I have to say...it was the best shumai and turnip cakes I've ever had. The turnip cakes were moist inside with a crisp top. The shumai was moist and delicious. This is the first time we didn't use any shoyu mustard or chili garlic. The food had so much flavor. Dinner in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii... I asked the birthday boy at church, "What do you want for dinner?" After a few reminders, George finally decided on "dimsum". My dentist, JoAnn, and I discussed where to go because dimsum is usually a Chinese breakfast food. She steered me away from Chinatown and suggested Tim Ho Wan because they were awarded a Michelin Star in 2010 in Hong Kong. She also mentioned that the new location in the Royal Hawaiian Center is better than the previous location at the same mall because it's closer to the parking lot entrance. Hmmm... it's Waikiki... She replied: there's 15 percent Kama'aina discount and validated parking... Good points! Ok! Sold! So, the five of us piled into one car and got to the restaurant at our reservation time! Parking for the first hour is free, but we chatted a while and stayed about 1.5 hours. Instead of paying $16, we only paid $3 for parking... yay! The receptionist was efficient and friendly. I told her that this new location seems better because it's brighter and seems more spacious. She said that customers miss the outdoor dining area. I sure don't! The humidity and birds - uhg - dislike! We ordered 13 items: Ha gow - shrimp dumplings Deep fried crab and shrimp dumplings Siu mai - pork hash (with shrimp) Signature BBQ pork buns (baked cha siu bao) Hom sui gok (deep fried mochi with savory filling) House noodles (for long life) Green beans with garlic Deep fried Chicken wings Steamed dumplings with chives and shrimp Pan-fried dumplings with Red vinegar Steamed mochi rice, wrapped in lotus leaf Osmanthus jelly for dessert Coconut milk with taro and sago We also had a pot of oolong tea which was refilled with hot water many times. Went for lunch dim sum. Parking is at Royal Hawaiian Center, validated for kamaaina. Restaurant is not at original location (fronting Kalakaua Av) when they first moved into the RH Center, they are now located next to the parking structure 3rd floor. Food was tasty - 5 stars. Price - 4 stars because had 15% off coupon, no free tea. Service - 3 stars, had to flag down servers for move water, to order tea, to order more dishes, for bill.
