Heard some good reviews, so we decided to try it out. First impressions were blah, bland and food had no flavor. We came in for breakfast, ordered nuevos rancheros with scrambled eggs and sausage patty, potatoes and refried beans. As you can see no seasoning to potatoes nor the rest of the food. They gave us eggs over easy, I spoke to cashier that we ordered scrambled eggs and she apologized, came to our table with the scrambled eggs, took our plate to the kitchen and switched out the eggs. Fluffy Tacos! Must I say more? This place might've ruined tacos for me. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to normal corn or flour tortillas again. Sometimes it can be hit or miss; the first time was the best. However, my last visit was a bit disappointing as the tacos were a little oily. I don't mind them being fried, but maybe they could've drained them better, instead of there being a pool of oil under the tacos (soggy instead of somewhat flaky n crispy). During lunch, this place can get pretty busy. I got up to throw some trash away, I hadn't even finished my meal! And the server ushered in more people to start hovering around, pulling back my chairs and sitting down (I was two feet away and audibly complained). No one gave a crap, it was infuriating! The staff seemed more interested in seating new customers than catering to existing ones. I even had to scramble to gather my belongings. Like who the heck does that to a paying customer? I literally had to grab my food from the table as they sat down looking at me. I walked out before I started a scene, cause that soooo disrespectful in my opinion. Backstory : I was born and raised in San Antonio . Moved to Round Rock 8 years ago. Being from San Antonio there are several Tex Mex restaurants on every block . So you can basically throw a rock and find a taco . When it comes to puffy tacos , Henry's puffy tacos , Rays . Mexican restaurants like Los barrios ( amazing enchiladas, my uncle worked there over 45 years ago , and brought those enchiladas home with him after work , WOW!! They bring back memories ) Anywho, Haven't been to those establishments in years but back in the day ....... Delicious . So , when I moved to Round Rock . I tried every Tex Mex/ Mexican restaurant in the area . All tacos are par . Enchiladas the same . Nothing that stands out . I finally stopped by Tio Dans . Never heard of it just happened to pass by and saw they sold puffy tacos . I stopped by and got a cheese enchilada plate , a picadillo puffy taco , and a carne guisada taco . In my humble opinion . Now remember I may be the guy who puts ketchup on his tamales . Hence "opinion" Puffy taco reminded me of Henry's , which were good and closest to Taste from my memories . Cheese enchilada plate was great , the chili sauce they use for them are a Tex Mex staple . The flour tortillas that come with it don't seem to be made in house . More than likely bought from a grocer supplier . Which is fine ! I'd rather you be good at one thinga try to juggle everything . Carne guisada taco in a flour tortilla. This was the only item I felt could use a little bit more love and attention. The stew meat in it was nice and tender , but the gravy or "guisada" was bland . Tio Dan Puffy Tacos offers great value as the pricing for their delicious food is very fair. A big surprise is how enormous their menu is. They have a huge variety of taco options, including breakfast and lunch tacos. Not only that, but they also serve fish, burgers, wings, chicken fried steak, and plenty of other items. Surprisingly, we've tried most of the menu, and everything has been at least decent, if not great. My son is a cheeseburger specialist, and he gives the Cheeseburger here 5 stars. It's only $8 and comes with fries and a drink which is outstanding. It gets busy during breakfast and lunch hours. So expect a little bit of a wait before your food comes out. Honestly we walked in to try out these "puffy taco" idea. It was interesting- the filling was tasty but the puffy taco was shell is fried in order to puff-up and was extremely greasy. (Dripping). It sort of reminded me on an arepa- taste wise. So we ordered one breakfast taco with egg cheese and sausage which ( the insides) was very tasty; and 2 ground beef puffy taco which dripped grease and had ground meat, bean, guacamole, lettuce tomatoe and cheese: and tasted okay (except for the excess grease) so we ate the insides and left most of the shells. We went there early in the morning (around 8:30-9?) and this place was packed already! So many people for dine-in and also for take-out. You place an order and pay at the counter and you can grab any table you'd like. They have great variety of menu and price was very reasonable as well. We got chicken wings with buffalo sauce, medium hot and some breakfast tacos which were beef, fish, potato & cheese, eggs & chorizo, all of them were delicious! The Puffy taco was better than expected; it's like a crispy taco with ground beef, lettuce, cheese, and guacamole, but the tortilla is puffy and fried which gives the taco a nice texture. The barbacoa taco was pretty authentic, although the corn tortilla was kind of falling apart while eating it. I also ordered a carnitas taco but what I got seemed more like a chicharrón taco-- not sure if there was a mix up. What to say about Tio Dan's? Eating at Tio Dan's is like eating in someone's home; not that it's a bad thing. I usually get the puffy tacos from here but this time I decided to switch it up and have breakfast. Breakfast Migas Unfortunately, this breakfast plate was a miss for me. The Migas were Tex-Mex Migas and not Mexican Migas. The abundant amount of cheese on this Tex-Mex plate took away from what could have been something good. However, the use of real potatoes with the Migas as opposed to the powdered ones many establishments serve was a nice change. Steak and Eggs breakfast The diced steak for the steak and eggs breakfast plate had a lot of gristle on the meat (as seen in the photo), which left much to be desired. The All American Breakfast The breakfast plate came with two meats to include sausage and bacon. The sausage rounds were similar to that of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage. Aside from this, the breakfast plate was just so-so. The overall breakfast rating is 3, however the puffy tacos are a 4 to 4.5 on any given day. But I held my wants to a Puffy Taco and enchilada plate, beans, rice and I ordered basket of crispy Chips and salsa. There are 5 Daily lunch specials. Service friendly and helpful. This is a small establishment that offers some big flavors! My favorite are their puffy tacos but they have a wide range of menu options so you're sure to find something for your palate. They aren't the fastest so come with your patience in check but they offer great service and great food so it's worth it. Found this place on a Saturday wanting some tacos. already had great ratings and a pretty big menu so I was excited. I got there and the place is packed because it's so freaking good. They have a large breakfast menu lunch and dinner a little bit of everything, including the wings, if you have a taco craving this is it. If you love a good food, this place is it. Ive been coming to Tio Dans since I was a little kid! My family and I used to always go to their old location, and we still happily go to their new one whenever my parents are in town! Ive eaten inside the restaurant a few times, but I usually order a bunch of tacos togo everytime I make the drive back to my family in Dallas - the tacos are still veeery delicious when re-heated! I always get their potato and egg, country and potato, and chicken fajita breakfast tacos. I also tried their puffy tacos and fried zucchini - really good!! I recommend eating those fresh though. This was the first time having puffy tacos. The flavor was okay and you definitely must love oily tacos if you eat them. It just was not for me. I ordered the puffy taco plate that came with cheese enchiladas, rice, and a cup of charro beans. As I said, not a fan of the taco. However, the cheese enchiladas had great flavor I was just disappointed that it was served to me cold. Seemed like it sat on the counter before coming out. Have been a fan of all the previous Tio Dan establishments, and this one keeps the wonderful food legacy going. Went in last week for luch as I had a fried shrimp craving. I came to the right place. I got the fried shrimp plate with fries and onion rings. WOW! The plate was delivered to my table and was filled completely! The shrimp were perfectly fried to a golden crisp yet still tender inside. Both the fries and onion rings were crunchy but not greasy. Perfect compliments to the shrimp. And one of the best things about the plate were the fried veggie patties. Round fried discs with a tasty rissoto-like filling. They should be there own side dish! If you want San Antonio style puffy tacos, but your stuck in Round Rock, this place is a great substitute! I will not vouch for the quality of every single thing they serve, but its simple down to earth diner food thats at least cooked right. Coming in on a Thursday morning around 8AM, I was probably the youngest person under 40. everyone here is either retired or a blue collar worker. This certainly is not a trendy or hipster joint! The interior is like a sit down diner/dive with no atmosphere. The menu is ginormous and there is something for everyone, but I came specially for the puffy tacos. I love that you can not only order puffy tacos at breakfast, but you can order specialty meats with it! I opted to order one a la carte as oppose to getting a plate. The barbacoa Puffy Taco is comparable to anything I can find within San Antonio. The taco itself was a golden brown, fluffy disk of sunshine! For anyone complaining that they are soggy, you either waited too long to eat them, or you caught them on a bad day. The barbacoa was beefy and wet. I wish there was some smoke flavor, but overall the meat hit the spot for me. I will admit that a barbacoa puffy taco IS GREASY! But its wasn't so greasy that I got a stomach ache or couldn't taste anything else. But if you have a sensitive gallbladder, get heartburn easily, or prefer leaner cuts of meat, don't even try ordering this. The fresh veggies and cheese are standard, but Ive seen situations where the veggies were warm inside the puffy taco. Luckily this was not the case. The only thing that tarnishes this taco is their guacamole. Either they are using week old avocados or it came from a bag. If you wanted a guacamole puffy taco, Id tell you stay away! Their Sausage and Egg Breakfast Taco was not something that will have lines stretched across the parking lot for, but it hits the spot for eggs in a tortilla. The eggs were scrambled diner style, which means they use a generous amount of oil. The sausage didn't stand out as much as I wanted, but you could still tell they were there. The tortilla was actually soft and fluffy. They don't taste as if they are made in house, but these certainly are not mission tortillas. For what you get, its actually not bad. If youre already here and don't plan on going elsewhere, these are quite the humble offering. They give you a sizable amount for a side of Refried Beans for 2 dollars. I like that they were the consistency of hot oatmeal, as oppose to hardened paste or straight liquid. These tastes like they add animal fat to them, which I appreciate. read more
